It seems that Time only use a thin fibre cable to, looks like they deploy a cat6 cable at the pole. Really thin when compared with TM. Two lorong at my taman, they laying the cable at the front drain instead of concrete pole.

This is the Huawei Fast Connect cable where it contains single core to connect from subbox to your house, kinda fragile & prone to damage very easily.

Hello all sifus,

I'm a newbie in terms of technical networking stuff but I've been a TIME user since 2019 with the Basic Plan 2Mbps.

There are some areas in my apartment where the connection is quite bad and from what I gathered, this is due to the old Router (Tp-Link AC1200) that I've been using. It is an old router that I first got when subscribing TIME.

I'm thinking of buying a new router myself as I don't want to renew my contract with time. I've been reading and ChatGPT-ing around and seems like Tp-Link Ax1500 is good enough upgrade for my case.

My question is, do i just simply plug and play the new router (with some settings ofc) and it's good to go? Or do I need to call for Time technician to configure the router?

Thank you!

Ya, personally I think that the cable that they use looked so fragile. BTW, this is not connection from subbox or FTB? to home, it's from the their manhole at the front of lorong to the pole... sweat.gif
I'm still thinking whether I will migrate from Unifi or Time.
Because as I read throughout this thread, it seems that Time wasn't that really good actually compared to Unifi. rolleyes.gif

It’s the same type from FDP->House, much better than what TM uses imo. It’s stiffer than it looks. Inside it has reinforcement. I’m 2y+ on TIME with this, no problem. But your area might be different if there’s rat etc. They won’t break unless something go and break it on purpose.

My only issue with TIME is just the connection to China.
If don’t want switch to TIME, I recommend transfer to Maxis instead, but if using TM network, anything wrong with your fibre, might be a little hard to get fixed because Maxis need to contact TM.

From my installation:

They use this one for drain, manhole(if area has it for fibre) and business buildings.
On pole, it’s different but still using the same connector.

It is from the subbox which usually they installed on the drain/pit wall or at the pole, if you see they pull from the pole then the subbox is located at the pole...
This cable has no protection against damage. Whereas, TM using the conventional outdoor drop cable (doesn't matter whether it contains steal wire messenger), the standard method of installation is they will put microduct as a further layer of protection, this is far better than the bare cable used by Time in this case.

I'm still thinking whether I will migrate from Unifi or Time.

Feel free to share a picture of the current equipment that you are using.
If you are given a ONU, then basically you just need to get your PPPOE credentials from the selfcare portal (selfcare.time.com.my) and configure your router. Plug in your router WAN (Internet) port to the LAN1 port of the ONU, and you are ready to go.

Thanks.

Actually, I just renewed my contract with unifi last May, taking their SWU offer, 1Gbps for RM159. Free 6 months. Speed will revert back to 500Mbps after 2 years.

But when I saw Time finally installing their infra at my taman, suddenly I feel 'excited' to try it because yeah, before this I thought that Time is far more 'superior' than Unifi but after reading throughout this thread since this morning, I need to think it again.

BTW, my initial plan is to relocate my current unifi to my brother house, as he want to take it and pay the bills, and install Time 600Mbps (RM139) when the infra is ready soon at my house (Maybe, very soon since their agent are already putting the banner around my taman).

It seems that you're knowledgeable about Time infra,
Do you know why they suddenly expanding their service even in rural and small town like my house ya?
Because before this, they only willing to give their service to major town and state capital.
Maybe they suddenly got the MCMC assistance by 'USP funds thingy' to expand the fibre service to rural areas like TM?
Or part of their CSR? sweat.gif
My area only got the Unifi infra at the end of 2020!

it seems like Gov now allows other ISPs to expand.
TIME only used to able to support high rise buildings and business lots. But now, they have expanded to many landed area, even other states. TNB Allo and Maxis NGBB is also expanding rapidly, I see Maxis fibre in Kedah, my area also has Maxis and Digi manhole nearby.

For my area, TNB, Maxis, Digi and Time started expanding at the same time.

When Allo first started, they expand to areas without Unifi for years, only then TM started to expand there to get customers. Good we have multiple fibre networks now.

I do not speak on behalf of them but based on our experiences these years, previously they were focusing on MDU projects such as condo, apt, flats, office buildings etc.
And after several years where they have gained good reputation & revenue (you can check out their Yearly Report), expansion of FTTX particularly FTTH has contributed vast revenue for them. Actually it is not recent years they venture into SDU projects like terrace houses & shop lots, before that they unofficially try out some projects and we did assist them in designing & deploying the infra. Apart from the direction to continue expanding, plus the demand request from consumers & gov also play a role in pushing them to officially role out to SDU projects.
Sometimes some areas conicidentally have their infra nearby and the cost to RFS that area is justifiable, then those areas will be RFS-ed 'easier'.
Another factor the same infra can be leased to mobile Telcos, which is highly profitable.
Thanks.

You can login to selfcare portal, manage plan, and see if the Termination button is there, if No, then you need to call CS.

Personally I came from unifi which I used for almost 10 years before I switched to time bb (no choice) as the place I stayed only has time bb.

Time bb to be frank is not exactly super superior than unifi. Only more distinct advantage is that the lower end plans time has much faster more upload bandwidth than unifi.

With higher upload speed, it is good but to most users they can hardly utilise much upload bandwidth unless they are content creators like YouTubers etc.
but if u did upload content e.g. to YouTube u also will know that all the content provider they also limit the upload bandwidth for each users, even u have 600Mbps or 1Gbps upload speed it does not mean that u can have such high speed while uploading ur content as it relies a lot on the provider’s server speed.

Uptime of network, as long as the fibre isn’t done badly, it would be fine. My TM never had to do a repair since installing in 2010.

Most of the services we use daily are hosted in MY or SG, so they usually work well. But if it’s international, then that’s where the differences is bigger.

Checking TM thread, Unifi having problem with cloudflare routing and lots of site relies on cloudflare. Or sometimes, different IP range gets different routing.

If my area gets Maxis NGBB, then might consider switching back to Maxis just for better China routing. Plus, price would be same, just slower upload speed and RM10/mth for public ip.

I would say all ISPs will just work fine if fibre isn’t breaking often, or congestion issue in area.

i dun use cloudflare so it is not an issue to me.

i have not encountered any routing issue for my use case previously for almost 10 years with unifi.

Nope

TIME do not have a congestion issue for now

My only complain for TIME is routing issue to China.

Big impact if you buy China domestic market smart home device from Taobao. Will suffer slow response and lagginess.

Is this issue a daily 24/7 occurrence or just during certain hours?
Possible to solve using VPN?

Yes daily issue but should be better during non peak hours. I only really use taobao and it seems to work fine, albeit the packet loss with a ping test. You can use VPN to fix this.
