Lol who's salary are you trying to compare to that you think your salary is small at your age? At your age and salary is already above 70% of the people in Malaysia already, it seems that your working for an MNC company? Your company sounds like the benefit of ExxN MxxLE brows.gif

When you shifted from IT to mobile developer, what was the difficulty faced, apart from different programming language?
And also, how is pay (increment or stays the same) when you shifted into a new field?

I am thinking to go from backend software to frontend software engineering but afraid to be underappreciated because of lack of related knowledge to the new job scope. sad.gif

New company can just use the reason "oh hey you are experienced but since you are still new to the field, I am going to give you fresh graduate pay" sad.gif

Let me recap a little bit with you, I was a lucky guy, I got the opportunity to travel overseas in my first job and I make roughly around my current pay during that time with allowance. So when I first decided to switch field, I took a pay cut and start fresh again. The company in Malaysia won’t really appreciate your overall experience, they just look at what they want so it’s highly possible they will want to pay you less but trust me, they definitely want a cheap laoubor who know a lot.

Put that aside, I still encounter company that have trust on me so they offer what I want despite I don’t have the relevant experience in the field but yea, show them you actually can do. I have good technical skill so yea, language isn’t an issue for me and I worked in a big team before so I can handle a lot of thing. By the way I was a back end developer too.

So try to ask you the same question, can you do the same ?

My pay is roughly like that throughout my career
2400
2600
3200
4000
Restart
3700
5000
6500
7700

You could see that I get atleast 20% every time I make a move. Every time the new company will ask me why you demand so much? I convince them during the interview and I prove to them during the employment ... that’s it. If I never make a switch my pay is easily over 5 figure now but I am happy with it now.

agree that selling yourself during interview is extremely important, but I am no worried about that as I am quite confident in my soft skills tongue.gif

And my concern about pay drop seems to be unavoidable. sad.gif but I will definitely go try for it, as I feel backend software is getting underappreciated these recent years and frontend software is what all the big big companies looking for now.

Anyway, sounds like you really good in demanding and convincing the employers to give you what you want. cool2.gif

I have a friend who was doing mobile app development (objective C & java) for about 3.5 years, before switching to company doing .net. Technically he's fresh in .net but the company did not think as such, and gave him a good increment jump.

My piece of advise is, not all company appreciates your total field experience, but some company do. So what you can do is if you're keen to explore a new programming language, set your minimum expected salary which you can accept going into a new field, then wait for a call. If a company offers you such opportunity with a commendable increment jump, don't think twice and go for it, and proof your skill sets later. You may experience a steep learning curve at first, but that's the price to pay when you wanna explore something new.

Backend dev definitely is a more important role but the problem with it is, backend dev has very good hardware and by that, I mean the server. No offence but that means most of the mediocre back end dev did not care the quality of the code and it really create a lot of problem for us the, mobile front end dev. I have worked with a lot of experienced back end dev and they don't bother improving the backend performance and gave me an answer of "well, the web front end works pretty well" ...

Mobile front end dev is quite challenging since we have limited resources, it's yet to take all the various devices into account so you really need to know what you are doing.

Anyway, I always tell myself this "you know what you could do, please don't let the employer bully you"
