I'm from data analytics background and graduated about the same time as you (22), hopefully my salary can be like yours when I'm 26 haha

Some tip I can share with you: Learn as much as possible whenever you're involved in any big projects, and elaborate them beautifully in your next CV during your job hunt, not to forget present them interestingly to your interviewer, confidently. And don't be shy to demand up to 30% increment (provided you have worked for at least 1.5 - 2 years in your current company).

And from my experience, usually big MNC (global employee count > 10,000) don't give commendable increment, so the first 5 - 7 years of your corporate life, you salary very much depend on job hopping. Of course you have to be good, and sell your skill as much as possible during interview.

Fun fact: my best increment I have gotten so far is 16%, whereas job hop increment the best I got is about 35%.

Currently I worked in a Big 4 firm. (3k starting position). My increment only happens during FEB 2020 (Cut off month) and I joined the company on November 2018. Do you recommend me to job hopping after my increment or stay for another year before move on? This is my first job though
*
In my opinion, since you're still very new in this job, just stay for at least 1.5 years to learn something valuable. After 1.5 years passed you have gotten your increment (don't put too big hope on big MNC increment), you can start testing water by updating your resume.

Just don't forget when you're chasing for higher salary, you have to boost your skill sets too.

Cheers.

Never know software developer in malaysia can earn that much
*
well my circle of friends are mostly programmers / software dev, and it's safe to say it's pretty normal for 4 - 5 years experience. Although I'll admit my salary could be at the 75% percentile of software developers (higher than 75% of people with same profession & same years of experience). Though I'm the youngest because I graduate earlier than many other (I completed my degree at age 21).

A few other extreme cases seeing a 28 year SW developer earning 16k ++ with 6 years exp (a mutual friend of mine).
And a senior tech consultant who's doing programming job too is earning > 10k with the same years experience as me.

They're talented people, though.

Banks still have a starting pay of RM2.8k. I moved after one year to another company in same line of work with a monthly pay of RM4.0k. Somehow I feel this is “low”. I’m 25 with slightly less than 2 yrs experience.

Current job is good but I’m just worried my salary is still too low. Can anyone comment if RM4.0k for two years experience is decent? Stay one more year and then move, or try to move now? I’m fairly confident I can get 30% increment at least.

Anyone can provide input on this pls. In my situation what will you do?
*
What's your profession / job title?

2 years experience RM4K is quite normal, even among programmers around me

That's a lot tbh.
ex classmate i know, software developer, but earning around 3.5k only.
maybe because he's in manufacturing mnc and his background is electrical engineering.
*
How many years of experience? And what language is he doing?
Degree or diploma holder?

I'm on finance side in financial institution. Actually the RM4k was obtained after one year of working, if by the end of the second year I would have got an increment and it would be around RM4.3k.
*
RM4.3K is perfectly fine I feel, quite market standard for 2 years exp.

If you plan to hop, maybe you can ask yourself have you learned enough in your current job? Or are there any frustrating elements to be considered?

One way is you can try updating your resume and wait for head hunters to call. This way you will know how much you're worth outside.

I'm too a software developer, but total experience 2 years+, (1y8m in this MNC), this is my 2nd company. Age 25, and my salary is way too low, I think even lower than market price. only 3.2k. My language skill set is MVC 6 core 2.1, EF7, simple skill of JS, Python, RESTful API developer (develop api), SDK developer and an embedded developer for Python. MNC based in Shah Alam, and I'm consider a team leader here in-charge of multiple peoples. What do you think my salary range suppose to be at?

I don't know what skill set and level you are at for your programming skill-set to achieve that high amount of income and especially at your age. I have been completed many projects and most of the time I'm solo in most of the software development and complete in time or even earlier. The new manager likes me and assign me a side project that not related to the company, although he is not the one who hired me. Anyway, I don't know how much value my skill set will get to offer, would you enlighten me?

*PS: I plan to hop cry.gif
*
Based on what you described, you're quite underpaid. Although my ex colleague with 5 years experience is getting somewhere around your pay too.

What is your starting pay in your first job? I assume you didn't get much increment during your hop to second company.

With your experience & technology involved, I think many company are willing to offer up to 5k, no issue.

I'm a .NET fullstack developer, working on Javascripts (Jquery & AngularJS), SQL, and .NET4.5 stuffs.

Started my career with 3k salary, and I got most of my increment from my second company, involved in alot of crazy projects and my manager liked me. After that, took a decent jump to my third company(current place)

i left my previous company because boss only give me 5% increment.
as a fresh grad, that is very very little.
when asked boss why i only get 5%, he say he need to fit it into the bell curve/ distribution.
*
Usually MNC is like this. They have thousands of employees around the globe, and if their business doesn't grow much (let's say 5% per annum only), but they give average 5% increment to everyone, their business won't be healthy.

And for the normal distribution graph / bell curve, it applies to everywhere around the world A-Z, no way you can hide from it.

Hence, only the best gets the best feed. The normal guys won't climb too high.

thats why sometimes i like small business.
you can see your boss everyday, got issue just straight to his office.
their increment is usually lump sum amount, ie 500, 1000

i think in mnc, you wont even have chance to meet your ceo/director lol
*
True, I've seen my friend in small company raking in 1000 - 2000 increment a year. But cons is you do few man job, as their team is not big and everyone cover each other. Work can be messy but you learn alot.

When you shifted from IT to mobile developer, what was the difficulty faced, apart from different programming language?
And also, how is pay (increment or stays the same) when you shifted into a new field?

I am thinking to go from backend software to frontend software engineering but afraid to be underappreciated because of lack of related knowledge to the new job scope.  sad.gif

New company can just use the reason "oh hey you are experienced but since you are still new to the field, I am going to give you fresh graduate pay"  sad.gif
*
I have a friend who was doing mobile app development (objective C & java) for about 3.5 years, before switching to company doing .net. Technically he's fresh in .net but the company did not think as such, and gave him a good increment jump.

My piece of advise is, not all company appreciates your total field experience, but some company do. So what you can do is if you're keen to explore a new programming language, set your minimum expected salary which you can accept going into a new field, then wait for a call. If a company offers you such opportunity with a commendable increment jump, don't think twice and go for it, and proof your skill sets later. You may experience a steep learning curve at first, but that's the price to pay when you wanna explore something new.

Come on, what experience and knowledge have you accumulated in your 3 months tenure that you think another company is willing to pay you a higher wage?

Stop thinking about being underpaid and start learning and think about your career path and development.

To my knowledge Sunway's actuarial program is not fully accredited by the IFOA.

Fully accredited program - To receive maximum exemptions, obtain an average of XX% from the selected subjects.
(Not fully) Accredited program - To receive maximum exemptions, obtain XX% from each of the selected subjects.

UTAR? biggrin.gif my friends around me are mostly actuarial students from UTAR. But only a handful of them ended up truly in Actuarial related industry.

What do you think of being an actuary in a well known insurance company vs being an actuarial science lecturer in a well known Uni? In terms of career path, salary, workload and work life balance.

As far as I know work life balance is almost non existent if you work in the industry.

Work life balance - Exactly the reason I don't work in industry. Regarding career path and salary, it really depends on different individuals. You can make good progress and earn a lot in both industry and academia if you are good.

Industry: Usually companies will pay your exam fees and allow study leaves. And if you work in big companies you will expect to receive bonus every year. What is bad is OT is quite often. Also when you are in office you are expected to work only.

Universities: Working hours are relatively flexible. As long as you finish your works you can do other things - research, exams, fb, tea, etc. Usually no OT as you can work from home. However, usually, your compensation and benefits are not as great as those in industry. So you may rely on secondary income source like teaching part time, master services, etc.

BTW not UTAR.

Last guess: APU

I have a few very successful AS acquaintances and friends around me making well above 10k. Could be close to 20k for one of them. About 5 years work exp. Degree grad.

Ok so, I finally made a decision after 2 months  sweat.gif ... and come to a conclusion, i decide to jump to improve career as well as salary increment.

Job Title : Senior solution development engineer
Job Desciption : Implement software and consultation
Age : 25
Years spent in company : 0 month
Company : SME
Industry : Software house
Tenure : Permanent
Employment Level : Executive
Experience before joining (years) : 2 years 2 months
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Degree in Software Engineering
Location : Damansara
Average Working Hours Per Week (incl lunch hours): 40

Monetary Payout
Basic Salary : RM 5300
Contractual Bonus (months): 13th month
Performance, Variable Bonus & Commissions (months) : Performance bonus and annual bonus

Benefits (where relevant) : Increment 5-10% depend on performance, certificate exam from the company, training, parking reserved
Health Benefits : Company medical claims
Transport Benefits : claimable fuel, parking, toll
Mobile / Internet / Gadget Benefits : none
Flexi Working Hours : none
Other Benefits : -

The pay is about 62% increment rate from Rm3271 to Rm5300, which I think is a very good thing. The previous MNC never concern the staff pay despite workload. Being assigned from a junior to project leader without the increment, and worst case that is my salary is even lower than any fresh graduate with spoon feeding every single day shakehead.gif The management will only concern with their employee at the very end of the day.  sweat.gif I do had voice up, but no action taken, keep drag and drag for 4-6 months.  shakehead.gif

But anyhow, that was a good experience for me. How these people function and provided me an insight of how to counter in future whenever I do meet any of their attitude.  bruce.gif
