If the company do not know your current salary, try responding to such question by saying this 'I expect to be compensated for my service, at least to be on par with what the general market pays their best talent. What would company such as De***** pay your top talent with abilities like mine?'

But you have to be good in your field, top performer...else maybe tweak the statement a bit to reflect your own ability.

Just be comfortable with the first figure that you give. Be mindful that their final offer will usually be equal or lower than your expected.

Instead of giving them a number, you can ask them how much they willing to pay. Ideally, an increment of at least 25% is a good move. Wish you luck.

Have they already offer you? If they already offer you then you can comfortably ask for higher...

If its only an invite for an interview, then be realistic..

Also, what's the position you applied? Senior associate i assume?

If they already offer you and you applied for senior associate - stretch your figure to RM5k

If assistant manager title, RM6.5k is a good start...

I got the above figures from glassdoor, i took the top range for the respective position..

Do note than a company like delo**** will always try to lowball you..so stretch your expected salary by a comfortable margin to offset the reduction in the final offer..

Are you moving across state? 25% is kind of common. But if lets say you are moving from Penang to KL (They always assume KL high spending place), then you can try justifying 50%. My friend went from Intel to NXP got a 50% raise when moving from Penang to KL.

All the best to you. Please do not lowball yourself, for your own sake and for other ppl sake too. If you have confident in your skill, ask for 35 to 40% and this is includes always giving them space for negotiation (lower your original expected salary by 5 to 10%).

Guys,

I am working as software engineer and currently thinking for a job change and I have 3 options now:
1. Change to a new job which requires the same experience as I have now ; Get increment.
2. Change to front-end software engineering (Java, HTML, AngularJS, etc) ; Get decrement or maintain salary (not so sure, correct me if I am wrong).
3. Change to IT (Network and Cloud services) ; get decrement (most likely)

Reason being I feel low-level embedded software engineering is really limited. I would like to explore more , so I most prefer option 3.

My dilemma is only the salary now. Really need advice on these options.

P.S: I have 2 years experience now, I feel like I don't learn much anymore in my current company, and I also want to get out from my comfort zone.

Is it possible to ask for +40% increment given that:
- has prof qualification
- 7+ yrs exp in projects (tax, SAP migration)

It's always possible given that you have the upper hand. Maybe the position needs to be urgently filled? Maybe you are a good fit to the position? These factors can affect the salary they decide to offer.

Still, I'm pretty grateful of my achievements thus far.

Hi Sifu all in this thread, could you help answer this for me pretty please?

1. How much is the average salary for an entry level position in KL?
2. Is RM5k too much to ask for in KL?
3. Can you survive with only RM2.5k in KL and is the living cost similar to Penang?
4. Do you know who pay RM4k and above in KL (or Penang)?

Ty in advance! - Manda

penang is around 10-20% less expensive in living than KL.

so if you get 2.5k in penang, you can get 3k in KL.

we need your job scope and industry to know if you worth 5k, but as far as I know only oil and gas can get 5k for entry level (degree) but if you are PHD, then it is a different story.

Thank you @icebryanchan

I'm a fresh grad in finance and is looking to join the banking scene in Malaysia, specifically KL (if not then locally at Penang). I heard about the cost too, so wondering if its worth applying and working in KL cos at Penang I can still live with my parents.

1. Average first job would go from RM2500 - RM3500 depending on your industry
2. In banking and finance not that easy I reckon. 5k probably is AM level in that industry
3. Depending on your commitments. Any repayment loans like PTPTN? Car? Petrol? Insurance?
