Guys my gross pay currently RM6k, with RM4k basic and RM2k allowance.

If i want to job hop, my next employer will be looking at only RM4k right to determine my next salary?

Kind of sad...

You can always try to nego.

I did that. I told them that I have 1800 for allowance, which add up to my total income. Then I compared the package (salary and allowance on offer). So the company agreed to up the salary.

Still survive in current oil n gas industry with that figure?
Most of my clients staff with high figure salary all lose job since 2015 onwards. Last time the Murphy paid almost 1.2k usd per day offshore here in kikeh field, sabah water.

Rest only on average salary.

for java developer 3 years exp in KL can get up to 4.5k to 6k, lucky one can get up to 7k but that is top 1%.

assuming you are android developer, as nowadays 90% of java developers work in android development.

What platform and framework you use? How good is your skill for those you have used? Any project portfolio you have done?

Working on both unix and windows in c + cpp, interfaced to tcl. We use boost library, and not much other stuff.

i'm pretty good, above average for my skill (I compare myself to others my age/experience). But technically I still don't know a lot of stuff, espc data structure. The software I worked on require more electronic knowledge which I possess, rather than competing with ppl from Comp Science who have way more knowledge in programming I presume (I'm from Computer Engineering).

Hmm... Your working platform is somehow different from what I have been doing, brows.gif

Working experience wise, such as expose to real world data structure is required, since you have knowledge like handling electronic in Unix and cpp, I suggest you can continue that way (Not much people with that skill on market I suppose, as compare to Programmer). A Unix Specialist or Engineer could earn you a lot. Salary more or less 5.2k+- with 2 years experience.

Yeah I know. I only realize how much knowledge I'm lacking in real world data structure is when I go for TripleByte online interview, where they ask a lot of data structure stuff. Heck they don't even teach you data structure in uni for Computer Engineering (I know comp sci did).

Currently I'm moving forward as Software engineer rather than programmer precisely because of this. But I'm taking up course on data structure since that will help me with my path down Software Engineer too.

Nah, software engineer, not system engineer. I'm not sure how they really classify the difference between programmer and software engineer. But from what I can notice in jobstreet, anything programming that requires the knowledge of engineering (semicon), then they will classify the job as software engineer.

my personal opinion,

Software-Hardware ratio 90:10, programmer.
Software-Hardware ratio 50:50, software engineer.

Also,
Programmer focuses more on end user experience (optimized application, optimized logics)
Software engineer focuses more on how the codes are designed (optimized code flow, optimized architecture design, component design, system design.)

Note that I mean they are doing almost the same thing, but their focus field is different by a little.

My title were Software developer and got promoted to Software Engineer. I could say, they are 2 same thing. I do no difference.

My job scope included all you mentioned by icebryanchan sweat.gif

Additionally, include QA, server, meet customer, machines, etc. Although I'm not in SME line, but MNC sweat.gif

Software Engineer, Developer, Programmer etc etc, it's the same job with different naming by different entity.

My BF told me that some of his peers are actually getting paid multiple times higher than him. He is one of the average ones in the field. While the rates have yet to pick up like good old days, but there are still opportunities out there.
