Hey guys,

Long post here !

I am a Malaysian currently studying in Perth, Australia and am thinking of going to Singapore to work upon graduation. My field is Advertising / Graphic Design in which I can see there are plenty of jobs in Singapore.

I have already started applying for jobs even though I only graduate in February. And of course, there are rejections, could be because of skills or I could not provide an immediate start.

One question that I got is, if I can't find a job by lets say May or June... Is it wise for me to continue a Masters program in Singapore ? I'll have one year to study for it, and that year I can try to get internship or part time job related to my field, and hopefully land me a job at the end of the masters program.

However, I think this plan is very simple-minded and does not offer any "what-ifs" situation which I am afraid of.

Hey, if let's say I write in the white card that I am staying for 14 days (2 weeks) but I "overstayed" for 3 weeks instead, is that really counted as overstay? Will there be any penalty or will the officers come hunting me down? What will happen?

hoho..dont think you want to mess with immigration. They can be really nasty if you break the rules. You must follow the declaration and visa rules for stay period.

I am not sure what they will do but best not to find that out the wrong way. Better keep your records clean and apply for an extension. If things goes south they will not allow you to enter the country, nonetheless to work there.

To apply for EP pass you need to go through those immigration check for past visa violation declaration. If you have one bad record, they will probably wont approve your EP visa even if your employer is dam interested in hiring you.

How do I apply for extension? What if I overstayed by a few days instead of overstayed by a week? Do I still have to apply for extension?

By the way, is it possible for me to just pay and get a Singaporean mobile line/SIM card there without any working pass? I need to make calls when I am there..

I am not working for Singapore immigration but as far I know immigration will place a red flag on you when you had overstayed based on temporary stay visa. Once you exit the country they will check your visa validity. If you had overstayed, better be prepared for the worst such as interrogation.

I am not sure if you can apply for extension, better consult MOM regarding such matters. MOM contact:

http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=117

ICA 24-hour Call Centre*# For general enquiries or further clarifications on our products or services, please contact us at 6391 6100

This is a 24-hour automated answering service for information of our services and procedures requirements. Our Customer Service Officers are available during office hours only.

I have experienced very strict immigration rules at Australia and assume Singapore is pretty much the same. I never try to overstay my visa validity period. Just be a good immigrant, there are plenty of jobs there. Just keep trying.

Mobile SIM is very easy to get, just go to any mobile phone shops/SIM card vendors and show your passport. The seller will scan your passport details to the company for registration. Top up is easy as well.

Dont worry about SIM, just check for a method of staying at Singapore for long period or reapply your visa if needed.

I think there was a similiar query regarding this visa stay stuff in the previous post. I remember reading it somewhere.

Also you can try using some headhunters that are based at Johor to get a job for you at SG. Save your time and money as well, usually head hunter fees are paid by the company.

As long as you don't overstay whatever immigration stamps on your passport is OK, don't worry about the duration you wrote. Typically immigration will give you 30 days per entry, unless you face problem or coming close to the 60 in 90 days rule.

the easiest way is to cross over back to JB... and go back to SG again. With new immigration card and stay duration.

As long as in 90 days you dont stay for more than 60 days in SG

hey, i have gone to ICA and asked about the deal for the 60/90 day restriction.
-days are calculated backwards in month-term
for example, you are in singapore in march, so to do it backwards, do march, february, january.

say you stayed in singapore in march for 20 days, february for 10 days, january for 15 days: 20+10+15=45, so you have only 15 days left. you cannot be in singaore for a whole month once you finish the 60 days.

in april, you stay for 10 days. april+march+february: 10+20+10=50, so you have 10 days.

in may, stay for 15 days. may+april+march: 15+10+20=45 days, 15 days left.

the officer said the rule is lax for malaysians and the days you can stay eventually boils down to the days the customers officer allow you. don't know how true it is
