Good Day everyone,

I am an instrumentation and electrical engineer that have 2 years mining design&site experience. Just a bit curious, anyone here by any chance work as a service engineer for marine and offshore? Since this is a new working field to me (compared to my previous experience in mining), can someone share their experience with me, please?

Currently a company offered me SG 3.5k as a service engineer, is that salary alright in that field?
(company is P&C, please do not ask)

Thank you.

I am working offshore, but not in marine products. and I am a service engineer as well. for 2 years I think it's around that price. I think the range is 3.5k to 4k. Besides that, I think we still have allowance in the end. So mainly we are earning more with that.

Working condition might be harsh and travelling will be very often. Might not be able to plan your holidays and other stuffs. Less time to spend with your loved ones. That's all I can say. Working wise, maybe someone in the company or same field can share more with you. =)

Thank you for sharing your experience notworthy.gif . Well, mining didnt really have much of a life than work. So one less thing to worry, i guess. Not a proud thing to share that engineers dont have life tongue.gif . Maybe spending time with love ones might be a bit of a concern.

I am guessing my life would be like my dad. My dad use to work at rigs as a geologist. 7 day week, no family life. Teach his son how to read well logs at age 9 so he can get more people to help him.

Yea something like geologist, but we are service, so won't be that long out the sea, maybe 2 weeks, the thing is, if business very good, it will be consequently.

The stress normally comes from travelling and also the job scope. They might send you to service eventhou you do not have much experience. More to site learning I would say, hopefully they provide training to you. =)

Wah! your dad really passionate about his job.. haha..! We only work 7 days a week offshore. But in the office we are quite free and work 5 days a week. So there is some balance there. haha..
*

Sorry the late reply, was packing up to go to SG.

Yeah, you got it right on the spot. He used to be a Geologist for ExxonMobil for 40 years. Now enjoying his retirement, but he still reads about geology stuff and national geographic (true passion indeed laugh.gif )

I had an interview with the company, they told me there is a lot of travel required in the job. Even to work in rigs/vessel for months. But I will be trained before going offshore, training will be given for a period of 1 year then i need to repay the service for 1-2 years thereafter. But like all 'training", it is basically throwing me into the lake of fire and see if i can swim. So, that is pretty much expected from my previous job at the mines.

Wah, you get a balance between office and site. That is pretty sweet. But I had discovered I love site work more than office. I did try office work, it is fun and good engineering design learning but nothing beats the actual joy of seeing the work being executed at site biggrin.gif .

In Singapore...
A 3 rooms HDB would actually just mean a 2 bedroom + 1 living room + 1 utility room.
A 4 rooms HDB would be a 3 Bedroom + 1 living room + 1 utility room and so on.

There are 4 bedrooms HDB around, but they're rare and they're more likely to be older units.

lol, i seen people posting the maid/spare room before and still charge SGD 600-700 buck. unbelievable laugh.gif .

It's hard because $6K is kinda like the sweet spot where a majority of Singaporean graduates are qualified and willing to do the job. If your cousin was earning $16K or $1.6K, then he'd have much fewer Singaporeans making life difficult for him.
*
Wah, 6k for fresh grad. No wonder they dont want to hire local grads.

1st, i am asking solution here and not looking for flame, and for the case, i dont even accept it, they straight apply for me. so do u think we should interview 1 company, wait few months see the company apply the work pass to you onot? of coz i will keep interview until i found the job, sign the letter of appointment, not main suka suka. if ur not helping, u can just keep silent and do nothing instead of posting non-constructive post
*
Wow. Looks like the 1st company wants to be nasty to you.

It is best to seek advice from Singapore Immigration, from past experience, never ever trust anyone in the forum for immigration advice. Just call them up directly or seek an immigration adviser at SG.

From my understanding you can cancel the online application pretty quick (seems like 7 working days is norm).

It can take as fast as 1 day to approve. If unlucky and they pick you to do some background check, can take up to 1 or 2 months
Hmm..has your work pass been approved and issued? If not approved, then the company has to withdraw it.

How did they manage to apply it for you? You would have to fill in the form and sign.

Bugger, I guess my luck is always bad when it comes to immigration. Anal probe time! icon_idea.gif .lol,jk

Oh, well i guess need to wait.

Thanks mate.

if he signed the offer letter and decided not to show up, of coz it reflected badly on us Malaysian. But if he haven't even sign the offer letter then it's another story altogether. Best is get the whole picture before making judgement.

Another qestion

My friend received offer from a company in SG but they asked her to fill out the visa form first then only sign for the offer letter. Is that how it works? What if she not agree with the offer letter? Visa can be canceled without any issue?
*
Is the same same mine. I got an offer but apparently for hired professional, mom have to review your friend first based on working experience, education and salary. Yes, the company needs to comply with a certain amount of salary to apply for an EP for professionals. This process is to protect the local graduate from being left out in the hiring process if it is an entry level job.

Dont forget EP visa is sponsored by the company. If the company/employee pulls out, the EP visa will be invalid/cancelled (it takes 7 working days for online), if i am not mistaken. That same goes if your friend wants to switch to a different company from her previous company that sponsored her EP. This is to protect the company from being used as a EP visa provider. Her new company needs to be her new EP visa employer.

http://www.mom.gov.sg/foreign-manpower/pas...#employerchange

"To apply for a new Employment Pass whenever the Employment Pass holder changes an employer. There is no need to cancel the existing pass before doing so."

no one here working with SingTel or StarHub? I have phone interview coming with StarHub but not sure how the environment there.
*
I got a friend that worked for SingTel. As far I know, SingTel is not doing too well in business wise for their Optus at Australia.

So, not long ago my friend got canned at SingTel this year. Many people say that Singapore is learning what Australia Telstra doing, outsource their jobs to India.

So it should be fine to go for visa process first then only read the hard copy of offer letter in Singapore?
How about StarHub?
*
I actually discussed about my offer, OT, offshore rates before I actually ask them to proceed into processing the application and EP visa. So, I am not sure if your friend actually negotiated the salary package. I am going in as a professional, so they cant pay me peanuts because MOM has a minimum salary for applying those visa. My guess is MOM will monitor my progress in the company.

All of my discussions are made by email. I never left any verbal contract agreement unchecked without an email confirmation. This is a very important step to cover both side of my ass if anything goes wrong that is not family related issues.

I am not too sure about StarHub. Well, google the company and see their yearly revenue and operation cost. Also check if the company is outsourcing their work to India. As far I know many telecommunication and IT company had outsourced their jobs to India. Even engineering design and EPCM company are doing the same thing as well, because cheap labor. Of course they didnt tell about the cheap designs that they will get that needs tonnes of hours to correct them. There is so many f*ck ups, you just decide to deal it by yourself.

Try getting into service company/vendor where skills and commissioning needs to be done onsite.

SHe has been told the salary rate and commission as well. And it is actually quite well known college so I gess they won't do anything tricky?

well if that is the case, it will be fine. Just make sure it is written in email for prove of contract agreement. This step will protect you long way to the court if things goes ugly. Use personal email for handling this matter.

it depends on the nature of the job and position as well. I dont really think age is the factor. most employers never ask my age.

yeah a mate in this forum gave me the link. lol. i didnt have enough time to check which part before that. busy packing. Today i will land at Singapore looking for a place to start renting. Manage to get a few places to inspect. Hopefully is ok. Finger crossed.

Dont have time when I start work, going offshore already. Lol. Singapore really want to test my ability to start work. Very agressive.
