Cat5, erm... well Cat5e can sustain 1Gbps speed without any issue in my home's network, but I'm not so sure about huge office environment (more than 20 PCs).
For home network where there's less than 5 busy devices on a single network, it's fine to use just Cat5e with cheap layer-1 switch, no issue at all.
I'm using DLink 8-port Gbps switch, no issue on my end yet, been running months non-stop, the only bottleneck could be my hard disk, running without any RAID.
To maximize the huge files transfer speed in Windows network, you can actually set the Jumbo frame to 4K and above, but best to set a standard amount (4K or 8K, etc.) for all PC's network card for stability issue, it has been tested on my end here, from 60MB/s to 75MB/s, could be more depends on the hard disk speed again, can reach 90MB/s and above easily with really fast hard disk or SSD on both end.
For few PCs access a single device, that'll again depends on the hard disk accessibility speed, also it may depends on the services as well, priority queues stuff like that.
I have 2 PCs access a single file shares before, watching full HD movie on both sides without any issue, no lags at all, but if you going to seek the movie, probably will need to pause for few seconds (lag) instead of instantaneous seek. sweat.gif

yeah, for home use, cheap switch should be good enough. Ive not tried jumbo frmaes yet since I get 100mbps+ most of the time copying files from my PC to NAS/vice versa. But there are certain times where certain files copy at 50-60mbps only for no apparent reason, maybe jumbo frames might help that hmm.gif

can those cheap switches actually sustain a 1gbps speed? something tells me no sweat.gif
Ok, maybe I guess if it just one connection it should be ok, but have never tried before.
*
Cheap switches have no problem with 1gbps. You will saturate your hdd speed way before the network speed. Unless you have maybe 4 machines trying to copyhuge files over the network simultaneously.

Planning to get a synology but there's so many of them rclxub.gif

Going to need a minimum of 2 bays, and only light home use (1-2 user video streaming & file backups). Is DS213air the right choice ?

You can use the compare production function to check which model has what feature smile.gif

Update:
Seems like all 2 bays DS model all support Cloud Station smile.gif

So.......

I have changed my switch to TP-Link Gigabit switch and Cat6E cable
but still the transfer is too damn slow..only 3MB/s (now i know the difference between MB/s and mb/s lol)

Before i changed the cables and switch..even transferring between pc is damn slow somewhere around 12MB/s but now it increased to 40MB/s

Could it be NAS (ReadyNAS 104) problem?? rclxub.gif

If your NAS couldn't even max out your previous 100Mbps switch then not worth the upgrade of switch and cable (Cat6) sweat.gif
What's your configuration of your NAS? Perhaps some gurus here can help you optimize the configuration and makes it transfer faster.
Transfer between PC always bottleneck by the hard disk speed, but it also can be affected the OS as well, going for Windows Server has actually increase the transfer rate much further (from Windows 7 to Windows Server 2008), ranging from 60MB/s max (peak for Windows 7) to 80MB/s max (peak for Windows Server 2008), but of course you're looking at spending more on the licenses. sweat.gif sweat.gif

Using this http://www.synology.com/en-global/support/nas_selector

It recommends DS214play & DS713+ . After reading reviews I'm leaning towards to DS214play since it's marketed as a home media NAS and I don't really need the expansion ports of the DS713+.

Appreciate any comments before I take the plunge smile.gif

Synology DS214+ sufficient for small office use of less than 20 staff? They only use for storing office files. The user need to access NAS from mobile and remote using cloud.

If budget not an issue, go with recommended HDD, WD RED because WD and few NAS company (Synology is one of them) joint design and develop the RED model.
The supported NAS will optimize the performance and stability of RED HDD via the firmware design.

If want to go budget, GREEN also ok, as i am using my GREEN on DNS-323 for many years already still going strong smile.gif

Hi, those who use N40L. Is RAID working properly if I run XPEnology DSM?

I would it worth more than DS413J

Hi all, been reading through the discussion , and picked up alot of good points.

However, i still need to ask a few questions. I am looking for a solution to cater the following :

1) NAS to be able to play full hd movies ( > 10gb ) without lagging. I will be hooking up the NAS directly to my router and my media player will be connected to the router as well ( wired ).
2) Ability to download torrents independently.
3) Possibility of a built in ability to unrar the downloaded files ( good to have )
4) Cheap biggrin.gif

Thanks a bunch.

edit : im not too worried about my data backup, as it will only hold movies and songs.
