Hello all,

Hope you guys could help out with my dilemma.
My Laptop is running of out of space again though I got myself a 1TB External Storage last year for backup for non-quickie access such as Media and Photos.

I already got a HDD Caddy to replace my Optical Drive and I intend to purchase WD 2.5" Blue 1TB together with Caddy. It is an inexpensive way to solve Storage issue for the mean time. However, another part of me hesitated and hope to get a full-capable NAS such as Synology for solving Storage for the next 5 years, at least. NAS is expensive, but its capability with Pool Storage and RAID Backup for my important Photos are worth it. But the cost is what put me Wait & See.

You may ask Why not just use any old-desktop as NAS.
Honestly, I do not have an old desktop free to be as NAS now.

Thanks you all for your time, reading or/and comment.

just sharing my experience using my 1st NAS unit for nearly 6 months now. It's a synology 213j. Using it mostly as a torrentbox n media server.
It's connected to the unifi router provided by TM via LAN. So far working flawlessly with my LG LA7400 tv via LG smart function on wifi. no issues with 3D OU files over 15gb size. I am able to play movies on my 1080p movies on my PC n TV at the same time both on wifi.
The tv is able to detect the 213j without doing any setup.

I'm not tht IT savy enough even though most reviewer mentioned synology hv one of the most user friendly software to setup. Luckily I hv a friend helped me out setting the port forwards and iron out the issues with ddns.

Hi all,

I would like to get an NAS, just for downloading videos and playing then through TV. So I guess my setup would be connecting my router to both the NAS and TV via LAN cable right?

I'm currently looking at Synology DS216play, DS215+, DS216+, and DS415+. Originally I thought of getting the DS415+, but now that I think of it, I don't need 4 bays, 2 bays is enough for me.

Also, DS415+ has much better processor which attracts me, because I'm afraid that I won't have enough power playing 1080p videos.

So what is good enough for me to just play 1080p videos? Are any of the 2 bays good enough? Please recommend.

Thanks!

I am using 213j
No issues playing 1080 and 3d movies
Wired LAN to the tv

Good day to all,

Could anyone recommend me a NAS for Media Storage and editing, mainly photos and videos. Needs to be able to work with both Windows and Mac OS.

Thank You.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It is raid 5 with 4hdd. With 1hdd, it can't read.

Would the data still be read able if insert into another Synology nas? But different newest model?

Not sure the cable. I just pull whatever I have now to try it out the speed. Will check again when configure it to cat6 cable.

I still don't no how to optimise the switch. At the moment just plug and play.

I might just setup it to 1 link aggregation. With the previous bad experience with the LAN port spoil, save the another 2 LAN port for safety.

Hope 1 link aggregation speed is enough for the PC, 3D media stream and torrent. smile.gif

I also noob in link aggregation
If for 1-2 users at same time accessing the NAS it will give better bandwidth if I got 2 LAN cables attached from the NAS to gigabit switch?

Hi, just need some info from synology owner regarding video playback on tv using dsm 6 video apps. Ive got plenty of big files (>25gb) movie in various format. Planning to get NAS where video function is a very important considerations.

If using purely lan cable, nas to router to tv will it do transcoding or will it play natively ?
And what if router to tv thru wifi ?

Am looking either DS716+ or Qnap ts253a,while Qnap have hdmi out I probabaly wont be putting it close to tv but if Synology transcode everything then I might swing to qnap , and placeit near tv, thanks.

i think for ,y LG tv, it support most major formats even 3d. So NAS is just like a source. No issue even with my old DS213j model

Yes, but better than hi-media. My tv cannot play all the format. I need the media player to play all the format, organize the media, photo, music etc.

Unless you have the gigabit router, you need the switch for speed and streaming. Forget the wifi to play 1080p. It is unstable. My tv currently is wifi connected to router. Will change it to lan cable and switch the wifi doggle to bluray player.

I hv tried playing via WiFi before I got a gigabit switch, works fine for me 1080 res and 3d files
From few gb up to 20gb++

It is maxis Fiber original router. Don't think it is gigabit. The wifi signal so unstable in some time. Even just few meter away with a wall between.

Just watching YouTube is pain in the ass.

Haha...
Didn't know unifi router is so much better 😁

The setup is almost done. Left the wire arrangement and the power surge protection.

And strongly consider the LAN line protection too. After discuss and some advise from the cal-lab tech in their office.

Test the speed. Pretty fast.

1) PC write/copy to NAS -132Mb/s
2) Media payer streaming no lag even with PC activity write/copy and ipad streaming video.
3) 3D content streaming no problem and lag. Video run without any jerk.
4) Youtube play on TV seems faster respond. No lag or buffer.

Greetings guys,

Would like to ask opinion about D-Link DNS-327L

http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/...tached-storage#

Saw at Viewnet's pricelist <RM500, is it a good buy for 2-bay NAS or anyone have cheaper deal for 2 bay?

Thanks in advance.
*
I got used ds213j for sale which imo trumps the d-link

thought of getting synology 4-bay at first but budget doesn't permit.....

then saw this D-Link and thought of getting it temporary first..
in terms of reliability, software, is the D-Link okay?

Sorry I never deal with NAS before so my knowledge is limited.

Thanks in advance.

The last I check before I bought the 213j
Synology have the best gui software, hence the premium price... Good for noob

of coz for the more experienced may wanna go freenas

Since then I hv nvr relooked at other NAS brands.
Now using ds1515
