Hi,
Want to ask about the WD-Red HDD for NAS.
I am buying Synology DS213J and do I really need WD-RED? or normal WD-Green will do?

Just finished setup my new Synology DS213j 3TB (WD-RED) - RAID 1 last weekend and migrated all my files from my old D-Link DNS323 500GB - RAID1.
Tested the single file (5.29GB) transfer from my iMac to DS213j via Gigabit LAN. Time spent about 2 mins and the writing speed to NAS is average 60MB/s to 85MB/s, highest speed rate at 100MB/s. I am very pleased with the result of my upgrade! This post has been edited by philipcs: Dec 29 2013, 10:52 PM |

QUOTE(sinstudio @ Dec 27 2013, 11:32 PM) Hi all, i'm new with NAS system. i bought a synology ds213j running RAID 1. Here's the question i hv: I am using the DS213j as well.1. how to setup 'remote access' ? my router is innacomm w400v6 (free frm TM when apply streamxy) 2. How to set the router configuration? What kind of remote access you are referring? How you plan to remote access your NAS? via what app? I am using iOS Synology DS Apps, i just port forward 5000 and 5005 from my router to my NAS and it works over Internet. |

QUOTE(sinstudio @ Dec 30 2013, 12:04 AM) Depend on your router model, shouldn't be hard to do port forwarding.Once you have done the port forwarding on your router, then you need to configure your DS213J and install apps on your iOS or Android devices. For this, refer to this step by step video guide - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsZQV3sSeFY |

QUOTE(Matrix @ Jan 1 2014, 06:50 PM) Bro...this is dlink. ..rm 385..synology cheapest also double the price.... Fully agree! If you just want NAS for storage, I think DLink is doing pretty good job. Transfer rate is fast on Gigabits LAN too.I believe it's the processing power or buffering not enough...no such issue when using pc to stream pointing to the same NAS as mentioned above... Btw, the file I test above 10GB. |

QUOTE(Matrix @ Jan 2 2014, 01:32 PM) Is it? Never tried before. But you need to connect all 4 HHD to recover and rebuld the RAID? Still, it's dangerous, don't want to take suh risks with my precious data. If downloaded movies never mind...don't even bother to RAID...just dump all in a USB Box only. Can always download back... I am also having this concern therefore i just re-use my old DNS323 + 1.5TB (JBOD) + Fun_Plug + RSYNC to build a rsync server to backup my Synology.15MB/s...i think about same rate with the 320L....best can go up to 20MB/s i think. But the rsync transfer speed is Sooooooo slow..... average 2MB/s |

QUOTE(Matrix @ Jan 2 2014, 01:48 PM) 2 MB/s...thumbdrive also faster wei... The rsync backup is initiated by Synology backup application. Seems like rsync is slow and should manually copy the data like you mentioned, then subsequent incremental / differential backup can be handled by rsync. |

QUOTE(corad @ Jan 9 2014, 10:48 PM) For a light user ; just file storage, auto backup and media streaming Hi,caveat is I've guests who drop by quite frequently and don't want them to have instant access to my files. what would be the recommendation ? Network with a mix of Macs and Windows. Been looking at synology , reviews have been good but any tips for the sifus here ? p/s: previously was looking at apple time capsule so ease of setup is a must I am new Synology DS213j user and i am having iMac + Windows 8 environment too. I am very happy with my purchase and the file sharing, streaming from android tv box, ipad, iphone are so easy and smooth. Synology DS213j is supporting Time Machine backup too and support AFP, SMB, NFS so the configuration for any PC or tablet is very easy. feel free to ask me if you have any question If you want to see how to setup Synology NAS (HW & Configuration), you can refer to this youtube playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8DC9A6392AD66D7F This post has been edited by philipcs: Jan 10 2014, 11:26 AM |

QUOTE(Assassin @ Feb 13 2014, 10:49 AM) You can use the compare production function to check which model has what feature http://www.synology.com/en-global/products/compare_products Update: Seems like all 2 bays DS model all support Cloud Station http://www.synology.com/en-global/products...DS213j/DS213air This post has been edited by philipcs: Feb 13 2014, 08:50 PM |

QUOTE(corad @ Feb 17 2014, 10:42 AM) If budget not an issue, go with recommended HDD, WD RED because WD and few NAS company (Synology is one of them) joint design and develop the RED model. The supported NAS will optimize the performance and stability of RED HDD via the firmware design. If want to go budget, GREEN also ok, as i am using my GREEN on DNS-323 for many years already still going strong |

QUOTE(ronaldjoe @ Apr 8 2014, 10:58 PM) I have Synology mobile app, DS Video installed in my iPhone / iPad.Open the video from the DS Video app and you will see the Casting button on the top right. Then you can choose which chromecast to play the video in TV. However, I have observed the below limitation of chromecast: - It not supporting AVI and RMVB file format, i haven't try the MKV yet. - Playing full HD (1080p) is a bit lagging and could be due to the reason Chromecast is running on Wifi or poor performance of Chromecast. |

QUOTE(kinx @ Apr 9 2014, 02:45 AM) ChromeCast is not very powerful. try get the MiniPC.. with quadcore and same function as chromecast.. Yes, chrome is not powerful at all and unable to playback 1080p, at least from Synology mobile apps. I am sure 2nd generation of Chromecast will be better in term of Full HD playback performance.in fact Chromecast ...they called as MINI PC . just like your android phone but able use HDMI as output to TV. For me, I prefer Android tv box because I can play anything from any file server, USB drive, HDD in Full HD video via 1Gb LAN. |

QUOTE(wwkkww @ May 4 2014, 02:08 PM) Can someone guide me how to transfer files from synology to qnap on the same LAN the fastest way. You can use your Synology DSM File Station, mount the remote folder from your Qnap.I have around 10TB data to transfer Then copy directly from Synology to QNAP without using PC. If you are on 1Gb LAN, then the speed will be much faster too. This post has been edited by philipcs: May 5 2014, 05:41 PM |

QUOTE(wwkkww @ May 5 2014, 11:21 PM) Thanks for the help.. That is what I did now. But still figuring how to setup a network backup with RSYNC/RTRR server between my N54L XPenology and TS470 pro I followed this guide to turn my old Dlink 323 to RSync server to backup my data in Synology DS213J.http://www.fatdex.net/php/2013/05/20/how-t...ackup-location/ Dont use RSYNC if you just want to "copy" data from old NAS to new NAS. The RSync speed is very slow by design. For backup wise, then ok to use RSYNC |
