Some poison for RoadBike. rclxms.gif

Frequently Asked Question on what kind of bikes to get:

1) Aluminum bike - 10 speed Tiagra (maybe mixed Tiagra - Sora), priced around RM3k up- this would be the absolute lowest point i would say to start from... any lower and you will land outside of 10speed equipment and any upgrades will certainly be more than the difference you saved not buying this bike.. shimano launched tiagra with 10speed beginning of this year making this a considerable choice... also, this grade of bike will have a more common grade of cockpit (handlebar, stem, seat post, saddle) and cheaper wheels

2) Aluminum bike - 10 speed 105 (maybe mixed 105 - Tiagra), priced around RM3.8k up- most likely the same frame above with a different paint livery, this would be an entry level into shimano's definition of competition components... tiagra would be what they called the top tier among the enthusiast group.. although both 10 speed... but materials and feel... tiagra has a shift indicator while the 105 does not hence giving you a pro feel (what the bike shop will tell you)...mostly.. tiagra has a bit more plasticky bits than 105... some slightly more expensive models might even start offering slightly better wheels like mavic aksiums along with better slightly better graded cockpit...

- i would not try and go past 105 on a aluminum bike... the best brands like specialized or bmc will be selling an aluminum bike equipped with 105 for a little over RM5k... going 1 notch up into ultegra will lead you to start looking into higher end bikes as those bikes will surely creep past RM6k and most likely a mismatch between frame and component grades... you will be practically trying to pair a set of RAYS CE28N onto a Perodua Myvi if you get what i mean in car terms...

3) Carbon bike - 10 speed 105 (possibly not full 105), priced around RM7k up- this would be a foray into performance bicycles... although a carbon frame... but this are not the best carbon has to offer for 2 reasons... carbon cloth grade (less modulus, less weave, lower grade binding agents) and the man power / time needed (less complex layup schedules) to layup the carbon layers into producing a frame... basically a mass produced frame with the lowest production cost possible... not all that bad... it should still be on par if not better with the best of the aluminum frames in terms of stiffness.. basically, component should be similar or slightly better than the aluminum 105 bike depending on the price you pay...

- here i would name one which shocked me quite a bit recently... saw this Look 566...this http://www.lookcycle.com/en/int/route/velo...-bike-2013.html , but i guess a previous year model...... carbon frame with Mavic Aksium wheels... not a complete 105 with some downgraded cranks and calipers... a carbon frame with comfort geometry retailing for RM7.1k if my memory serves me right...

- price is slightly high for some people... but if you look at it...maybe under 30% more if you are looking at a Apex or 105 equipped Specialize Allez

4) free for all - death - bankruptcy - you name it...
- step into this and there will be no return...

Beside on the modern roadbike, there's also classic roadbike that worth to consider, if you're classic roadbike lover.

at best, this is considered a classic remake...
user posted image

with columbus tubing at least... if there is any chance that anyone still makes a bike with reynolds 531 tubing, even better...

it has to be small round tubes and lugged in order to qualify as classic...

45mins will be a standard operating procedure... imagine the doo doos that wait there in line even before the shop opens.. they line all the way until 3 shops away from the door waiting for it to open on weekends...

if it's for jamie oliver cooking me a burger and some chips, heck i would wait... but for this.. NAH, not even giving it a second thought...

that sounds normal... it's a fact that the current mobile data enabled smartphone carrying younger generation like to expose their lives on the internet...

so, it only make sense that they can engage in activities that they can camwhore about so the rest of their community know that there is always a bigger camwhore out there... if you go cycling, you would be so beat up that you even forgot that you have your phone stuck up your ass for the entire ride...so... that is my theory of explaining why you can't hype cycling while you can create massive hype for a burger...

you'd need baby jesus (on 2nd thought) justin bieber (what was i thinking) selena gomez (don't think so) whoever the hell is having hots now to ride a bike then only i think the rest of te people will follow...

operative word of the day is "follow"... you follow on twitter... you follow on instagram...

it's a shared lane lar i think... it depends on the co-operation of the drivers to make it happen...

if i were to govern the damn lanes.. i would deploy a hoard of drones high in the sky monitoring the lanes with hellfire missiles... any misbehaving drivers that bully cyclists... the car will be laser painted and a hellfire missile launched at it... and from off-shore, a long range tomahawk will be launched at the registered car's address so that it will annihilate any possible offensive drivers of his or her lineage...

it's a bit extreme, but should make things work... and the 2014 budget would be needed to increase by 50,000% to make this work...

Oh well, that expected in Malaysia since cycling is not common and those ppl who rode usually buy super high end bike outright. If you don look like water fish then the shop will treat you like shit. I went this shop in F&N pudu looking for lenzyne pump, the shopkeeper not keen to entertain me and wanted to get rid of me asap whistling.gif In australia, at lest they treat u with respect but still there are some shop they look at you first before dictating the level of service to be provide eg u look like student or asian whistling.gif

==============================================================

Btw anyone riding in kl this coming raya? I am really keen to try kesas highway from bukit jail to Botanic smile.gif Not sure where to park in bukit jail if i going to cycle?

not for chepet like us mar... it's cheaper you know... and you don't need to buy powercontrol 7... just a cheaplak garmin edge will do...

sooner or later srm also has to find someways to counter one... because the pro's will need to analyze left and right leg deficiencies...

for us idiots... it's just a case of showing off at the lowest bajet possible mar.. hahaha

furthermore, it's not like we can understand the shit that the srm analysis software throws at us...

you looking for cheaper or better options?

cheaper, there is still polygon to look at

better, got a lot of choices, depends on how deep your pocket is

One that offers the best value for money... no point paying so much just for namesake or save more for a sub par quality bike..
Almost bought the merida last year but no size at that time..
Recently start hunting again...

1st ask yourselves:

1. What you want to use for? pure running or pure cycling? or mix?
2. set your budget.
3. study the items that match your needs.

RCX5 - multi-sports - can do running and cycling (but recommended to get the GPS sensor cost RM499 if not mistaken (if still within your budget). Then when you're on cycling, you want cadence, you can add another cadence device (another RM199) the total complete set as i mentions above, can cost more than Garmin top range GPS watch namely Fenix.

Thank you.

My2cent from RCX5 user.

legally? not so sure as some say that bikes are not supposed to go on big roads... but for sure, i can tell you not to try expressways like nkve and sruff like that...

else, ldp is ok to ride, just keep to the side or motorlanes whenever possible in order not to offend other motorists

most importantly to keep yourself safe as you are exposed to dangers on the roads

Basically plan to do mix. Running and cycling.
I read review saying that using the gps with rcx3 are good enough for biking and running. What do u think?

Experience from a noob.....I had a fall while practicing balancing - 0 km with clipless on.. My outstretched arm took the brunt of the impact.
I didn't took on any precausion, that thought me some humility in treating any stun on the bicycle with respect.

in my idiotic opinion... to learn that the fastest way is to fall in front of some "super duper smoking hot orgasm inducing by one accidental glance" type of chick while trying to impress them...one or two falls is all it takes and by then not even a tornado can knock you off your track stand...

take it from someone with experience...or have experienced it before...

that or falling in front of on-coming traffic will work too.. especially the types where the car honks and laughs at your sorry ass if you fall in front of them...

Yesterday, i was with a group of makan-makan angin relax stress free ride...

they are free, and cycling gear latest updates cant escape from their discussion.

I'm noticed, Campy super record have 3 holes on the brake handle there, which savings up few grams.

new Campy record also have holes, two hole, and chorus have 1 hole. haha...

oh yeah, pedalspot have some new wierd wheels... the spork is soft and when put it on wheel, its tension and can suppot the wheel, which cost below RM3k.

poisons group aka info updates.

oh yeah.... on the 11 speeds thingy, its seem Shimano banyak troublesom, where you have to change complete wheelset, while campy 11 speeds, no need!

oh yeah... heard dura-ace now selling around RM5k and ultrega selling around RM2.5k.

so many oh yeahs?

true, with shimano 11s u need to rebuild the wheel. coz drive side dimension has changed. at least change to shorter spokes. non-drive side is fine.

or just change the wheel.

BUT, if u have a mavic wheel, u don't have to do anything other than removing the loose spacer. that means mavic wheels have always been compatible with 11s shimano.

Quick question ..

Just got myself a simple trainer (http://www.minoura.jp/english/trainer/tire-drive/b60r.html) and also a new computer (Cateye Cadence) to allow me to get some cycling in during daytime when it's too hot outside tongue.gif

What's the best method to use a trainer? Find a resistance level you're comfortable with then stick to a certain speed / cadence?

Never had a cadence meter before , only ever paid attention to speed (outside of course, not on the trainer)

depends on which perspective you are looking from... both are different pedigree of bikes... each has it's benefits and disadvantages....you need to know what you are looking for first...

Hmm i need urgent adjustment on my saddle as i mess up the set up and its making my balls numb. Anyone can recommend good fitter that can help me adjust the saddle, i just need to sort the saddle. Other stuff like seatpost height are okay for me. I was thinking KH Cycles or bike pro since they carry Scott but are they good enough for the job?

Would love to hear suggestion from you guys. Does Godzilla cycle guy do good job on bike fitting?

Since we have ultra runner around here like Vinn_Ann, Syamillion, BH, lil, Appreciate your input. I need a recommendation to buy a running shorts, like a compression shorts...I have a 10 km event on 8/9/13.
Was thinking of using my cycling short but afraid I will embarrass our cycling community here....advice please.
Also any good running shoe, just for consideration if I am going to pick up running for fun.

Shoes, just check your foot structure. Runner Lab from Tropicana City Mall provides such service. I like Saucony and VFF but I no money sad.gif

Shorts, very subjective and strongly depends on how long the distance is. Some get inner thigh chaffing before 10k some none. I get it easily hence I prefer a pair of compression shorts.

Compression shorts like 2XU and Skins can be rather expensive, no Under Armour here and so I went with Nike. Quality wise, meh, but so far, good enough for legs workout days or running days. Placebo perhaps but I do feel that I perform better with it.

BTW, not ultra runner here, just a casual one going for his first ever half :/ paiseh

when the freak have i became a runner... point your gun at miao lar...

shorts jus buy those lycra can adi lar... normal ones will do adi... or those running shorts also can unless you are worried that your big ball bearings swinging around and ppl noticing lar...

there are some that is meant for duathlon / triathlons that can serve both for cycling and running and usually has a thinner padding so you dun run like u had sprsbtsx the night before...

shoes is something i know nothing about.. i have no shoe fetishes.. my friend told me the shoe thing is shits.. worry more about your foot strike better as that help alleviate the pressure rather than depending on the shoes to do the job...

for me, why run when you can tenga??? that or drive...else, why the heck did i spend 1/3 of my hard earned money every month paying for a big chunk of motorized metal and then go out and run when i can enjoy the luxury of my air-conditioned, music playing motorized transport just to realize that i have two legs that is still functioning...

running is over-rated....

Compression shorts like 2XU and Skins can be rather expensive, no Under Armour here and so I went with Nike. Quality wise, meh, but so far, good enough for legs workout days or running days. Placebo perhaps but I do feel that I perform better with it.
Eh.. compression is for recovery lar.. i thought you wear that shit after you finish torturing the hell out of your legs???

that or you have deep vein thrombosis in which you should not be running in the first place if you have that...

BTW, not ultra runner here, just a casual one going for his first ever half :/ paiseh

nike shorts got base layer? i thought only their compression tops have base layers.. bought 1 before.. totally suck at heat dissipation...

or do you mean the core compression range???

i think this are meant for football players...you basically wear them under your football shorts during play.. and the football specific tops have some armor muscle bolstering effects or some shit li tat...

1) take a piss at the sarong
2) disrobe in a swift manner
3) wrap the sarong at his rivaling competitors head causing them confusion and panic and it will be hard to take off because it's wet....
4) and make a run for the line...all the time wearing a Lycra underneath the sarong...

10km event no need any special shoes. but i think you won't stop at 10km right? so buying a good shoes can take you longer. like what the @lilredridinghood say, check your foot type.

however i didn't check my foot type nor i have any good shoes, i just done my half marathon straight with whatever shoes i have and also no compression shorts last year. I am still using that shoes till today although there is a hold in the toe part, just a simple old nike lunarlon and it works fine, i have done 300km and still counting and also using that as my cycling shoes.

just recently purchased the calf compression from 2xu, will try it out this year full marathon event.

just my 2 cent. sorry for bad english.

it's basically the same shit if you use it for recovery purpose... the only offset is that you look like a horny old lady wearing it...and if you believe, the difference is that 2xu claims their compressions stockings is "gradual compression" while those pharmaceutical ones are "compression" only without the word gradual... whatever the shit that means...and they get to charge you twice the price because of gaining another confusing word that might possibly have no function whatsoever...

and if you have the balls... pharmacies might have compression stockings meant for people with diabetic disorders and DVT... and those are even more cheaper... but a complete PIA to get it on...

get a proper pair of shoes.
some people have legs that are very loterant to any kind of shoes, altho not suitable.
some people need specific kind of shoes.
hefty price tag and high end tech do not guarantee suitability.
i bought a high end asics, but turned out one of the worst experience for me

anyway, why don't you contact this fella. he sells compression wear and running shoes. price is cheaper than retail. http://ccube-sports-hub.blogspot.sg/

if you are afraid of crashing and hurting your expensive first bike... then of course buy a cheaper one... but even cheaper nowadays will mean 4 figures....

cycling class... dunno if that ever exists...

http://www.baikbike.com/bicycle-shops/

go look around bike shops around you to get a feel of what is available first... for road bikes, the cheapest it can dip is around RM1.5 - 1.8k... mountain bikes, slightly lower from rm1.2k onwards...

have you thought of what bikes you want to ride...

can confirm what's MIAO comment below? You never know how to cycle?

argh. Childhood must be boring then.

If can, just try borrow any bike (no entry cost) to start learning how to cycle. expect some falling, as its part of learning process on acquiring cycling skills.

Once you know how to cycle, as beginner, (we dont know what's your long long term intention whether for healthy lifestyle purpose or for joining endurance cycling event), borrow a bike (no entry cost) from whoever you can find on the type of bike you wish to ride, ride for 10km, 20km, 30km and more like 50km and feel for yourselves whether you loves the feeling or not.

Once you loves the feel, only start to thinks what bike to get.

normal windbreaker is too loose for cycling... yes, you can wear it... but it is a slight nuisance...you can opt for rain jacket which might be a better choice as the material is usually lighter and easier to tuck away..

why would you want to wear a wind breaker for anyways?

castelli makes rain jackets and here is some examples of it...

i think for 1.. there is much higher chance that he have never ridden a bike before mar... 2... if he knows how to ride and dunno about the sport... nothing can be done what... there is no class for such thing... it's just like saying there is a class on how to appreciate hamburgers...tarak lar bang!!!

im not asking him to straight away jump into roadbike.

oh yeah... i not yet introduce him to RPM class. wahaha...

i thinks buy a mountain bike from hypermarket RM300 is a good start to learn how to cycle. Mountain bike position is comfortable compared to roadbike. last time when i was small, RM300 can get a good mountain bike, 18 speeds le...

i think both this bikes are priced differently right? and it's a very different bike... not just the components... one is an alloy frame and the other a carbon frame..

definitely the team carbon if you can afford it...either ways, components wise on both bikes.. there is high chances that you will be upgrading it anyway.. so, why bother???

yeah price is different
my worry is if i take that 1st option and i upgrade the components later the total cost will be equivalent to getting the 2nd option minus the carbon frame.

let's look at it this way.. on the 105 team carbon... there might be a chance you upgrade the wheel and leave the majority of the components as it is... +- 10k the whole bike..

on the apex road comp... there is also the same chance (albeit a higher chance) to upgrade the wheels making it the around 7-8k...

the major question is, do you prefer SRAM in the first place as the road comp is sram equipped although the entry level group... and yes, there is possibility that you might swap some parts out even if you prefer SRAM on the road comp but it should not result in as much as RM3k unless you upgrade the entire group to a higher end one... in that case, the same applies to the team carbon as it is also only equipped with the work horse group from shimano..

so, the question is not which is better.. the question is, if you will be itchy handed come to a couple months after owning the bike as both bikes have stuff that can potentially be bettered...

and after all that.. still comes to the question of the frame after all your upgrades where it might become a bottle neck...

if you say you are worried about trashing your first bike like crashing and damaging it.. the alloy one would be of a safer choice compared to a carbon one... but other than that... there is not much reason to get the alloy one is money is not of a constraint...and even to damage a carbon one.. you need a cataclysmic crash with most probably put you in the hospital as well to make that happen..

normal windbreaker is too loose for cycling... yes, you can wear it... but it is a slight nuisance...you can opt for rain jacket which might be a better choice as the material is usually lighter and easier to tuck away..

why would you want to wear a wind breaker for anyways?

castelli makes rain jackets and here is some examples of it...

Because I do some running too.
Thought of getting a wind breaker for running (Ultra light weight) and can use for cycling as well.
Am looking at this actually.

Tried at RSH and Adidas outlet. Very satisfy with the weight and condition of it.

it's worth trying out since you need it for running anyways... but i dun see why you need a jacket in the first place.. we are more worried about heat dissipation while you want another layer that prevents it?

i would guess the windbreaker might feel funny against your skin without something in between...

how the thing feels aside... there is a couple of reason's why a jersey is better in a way is that cycling jersey's have pockets which is good if you want to use it to keep your mobile phones and any other nick nacks /snacks and stuff that you want to carry with you on your ride and to enable you to reach out to easily instead of stopping to get it out of your saddle pouch...

so, if the reason behind the windbreaker is to protect your arms from UV and IR rays.. i prefer to stick so short sleeve cycling jerseys with arm warmers which you can take off or long sleeve jerseys as there is flexibility to it... the windbreaker might not be of help in getting sweat off your skin and worst, it might not be nice to wear it in hot weather...

there might be other options out there around the same price or if you are looking for even cheaper carbon ones...

i think there is a merida scultura comp that comes equipped with tiagra for a little over RM5k...carbon frame with even lower end equipment if you plan to upgrade the hell out of it anyways...i believe so does other brands have simillar models...

he is renting a space as vans urban cycle, new shop place... not the old one at three two square...
http://vansurbanbicycle.com/?page_id=7

you need to call Johan to make an appointment as he is not located in his fit studio all the time (he is a retiree, just doing this out of interest)... so, make sure you call and make appointment before you go...

hello, wanna ask something..

can human drink water while breathing?..

or breathing while drinking water..

i am struggling with this problem...

because that whenever i want to drink water while cycling,

and i need to stop my breath at least 2 sec, to swallow the water in,

then only i can continue my breath..

is it possible that swallowing water while breathing in/out ?

Or is it my method of drinking water is wrong?.. please cirrect me..

i don't see how you can do it without water going down the wrong pipe...the throat of a person is a 1 way street and there is a valve that closes the pipe that leads into your digestive system when you breadth and closes the pipe that leads to your lungs when you swallow food or water...

you are asking how to get 2 trains coming from different railroads onto the same track without causing catastrophic disaster... which is not possible unless you are david copperfield..

even forcing even would make you realize it is something not possible.. it is not that hard to hold your breath just for a gulp of water... no one is asking you to do the 100 meter dash while drinking 2 gallons of fluids....

some question from bike noob here
hope sifu can answer

Is there a big difference between a carbon bike and alu bike?. For example lets say you riding a alu bike and you borrow your friend carbon bike immediately you will feel the difference. This is assuming both the carbon and alu bike has the same group set and wheels

on a top end carbon bike, yes... those sort of bikes can be made to be stiff yet compliant at the same time.. main think is how power is delivered when you ride one of this high end ones where it feels more direct as parts of the frame don't flex as much due to clever layups of the carbon layers and also strategic using of more higher grade carbon cloth during the frame molding process...

on entry level ones.. maybe here is a chance you don't feel too much when you exchange bikes especially when both bikes are new.. you might feel it after years of usage where alloy will typically fatigue over time and start to flex a bit more than it does when new.. while carbon has close to no fatigue life...

weight wise, entry level ones might also weigh as much as the higher grade alloy bikes due to less man hours being spend on making the frame with more advanced and time consuming techniques...

neither.
the fuji comes with disc brakes, which will seriously limit ur choice when u want to upgrade ur wheels in future.
and since u r willing to spend rm2600 on the fuji, why not find a polygon with similar price?

i think first of all.. it's not apple to apple comparison...

if you can spend 2.6k.. might as well look further upstream and aim for some 105 or tiagra 10s equipped bike from polygon... at least you won't be having headache to upgrade stuff to 10s if you find that you need it...

Guys what do you thin about this bike
Litespeed c3 105
http://www.litespeed.com/bike.asp?content=C3-2013

Was quoted 8k+
I look at the specs (almost complete 105) seems good and value for money but is litespeed reliable brand? I just know they good at titanium bike and new in carbon

carbon is not their forte... but they should be a reliable frame maker compared to some china made ones...

the c3 is their aero frame... for that price.. .as miao says... there is other choices... a BMC road race if you don't mind in previous year model was sold at under RM7k with mixed 105 as well..and there is many other options out there...
