QUOTE(E Crew @ Oct 6 2013, 10:40 PM) Hello azraeil, my diploma was in mechanical engineering.Recently UTP has opened for registration but they do not offer petroleum engineering and only offer petroleum geoscience.I was in doubt whether is this a good bet or not as it's a very niche area.I am afraid that it would be difficult to get a job in future. In this situation, what would be your advise to me ? if outdoors is your cup of tea and you love rocks/history of our planet earth, then go for it. |

Dear sifu and industry experts. I just wanna ask if its advisable to start applying job for the position of graduate chemical engineer in OnG companies before graduating?
I am currently in my last trimester of my Bachelors degree in Petrochemical Engineering. Would complete it by end if this year. I saw a job opening in ExxonMobil exploration and production Malaysia for the position of Recent Graduate Chemical Engineer based in KLCC. What is the expected salary for freshie in OnG companies. There is a column for me to fill up the expected salary. Hopefully the sifu can help a newbie like me set foot in OnG. |

I just wanna ask if its advisable to start applying job for the position of graduate chemical engineer in OnG companies before graduating? I am pretty sure that the job will mainly be downstream related (i.e. deals mostly with refineries and petrochemical plants). Probably not the best option if you are looking for something strictly o&g.I am currently in my last trimester of my Bachelors degree in Petrochemical Engineering. QUOTE(newbie2013 @ Oct 9 2013, 10:18 AM) Speaking of which, the thing in this industry is that most of the companies have a selective preference towards UTP and UTM graduates. Which is sometimes very hard to comprehend. I personally do not like how UTM is grading their students. There's no bell shape curve; exams are pretty easy; most of the students scores exceptionally well if you care enough to put it a fair amount of effort. Now, what i am trying to say here is that their graduates are no better than graduates from other universities who score a cgpa of 3.5 and above. In fact, some of UTM graduates are so terrible in interviews and their high cgpa certainly does not reflect the amount of theoretical knowledge they had (well, not surprisingly). So the question is, why are they given all the opportunities? I.e interviews and stuff. Why are the students from other unis are being ignored especially those who worked their ass off to beat the bell shape curve and ended up having a cgpa of 3.6-3.7. Are we not human? Do we not deserve an equal opportunity at least for an interview? Thank you UTM for swamping the market with thousands of 3.8-3.9 students every year. |

There's no bell shape curve; exams are pretty easy; most of the students scores exceptionally well if you care enough to put it a fair amount of effort. Well maybe it go back to the networking or connections. Some of the companies maybe have kind of UTM's, UTP's, Mines's etc graduates/alumni in their company. Or myb because of the track records/work performance of the previous employees from that particular universities that make the company prefer to take graduates fron those universities...Now, what i am trying to say here is that their graduates are no better than graduates from other universities who score a cgpa of 3.5 and above. Sadly to say but some of the candidates can talk all day with all kind of thing like they know all the things, of course to sell himself..but when it come to work and means hands on jobs, they will come bossy and etc....not all and any particular graduates This post has been edited by meonkutu11: Oct 10 2013, 02:00 AM |
