GUIDELINES TO MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL ETIQUETTE
FROM VARIOUS SOURCES IN RELATION TO SHARED TRAILS AND NON BIKE SPECIFIC TRAILS
PERSONAL SAFETY -Wear a brain bucket(yes..that's a helmet) whenever you ride -Do not travel into remote areas without informing others -Ride within your capabilities.Ensure that if you want to push your limits, you buddies are around to support you. -Know your bike and bring the necessary/essential spares. -No wear helmet also can, lebih kurang like this guy only.
RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHERS(NON RIDERS) -Give way to non motorised trail users, i.e. hikers, horse riders, because people judge all cyclist by my actions -Give way to motorised trail users, ie. motor cross bikes etc, because generally we will end up worse off in an accident. -Alert others when approaching.Get a bell, or "Excuse me" works quite well
RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHER RIDERS -Riders have the right of way.If you are pushing your bike, leave the riding line open for others to go past. -Rider up hill has the right of way. -Allow faster riders to past
SPEED -Approach turns and bends in aniticipation that there's someone there -Make your presence known when approaching someone or any turns
IMPACT ON THE TRAIL -Leave the wildlife and fauna alone.Magic mushrooms are bad for you. -Stay on designated trails and avoid destroying vegetation if possible. -Dont't take short cuts over /around technical sections. If you can't ride it,walk it. -Learn how to use your front brakes so that you minimise skidding your rear wheel. If you refuse to learn, then ride only in bike parks where people are afraid to maintain the trails. -Do not litter.Take out whatever you take in. Practise minimal impact riding, take only photos and memories with you
FUN -You are to have loads of fun, talk lots of cogs, and make good friends on your ride. -Develop sense of humor. Some people say it's good for the soul. * Taken from PCC.
Advice 1: I want to start cycling, what should I know?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Probably someone can stickied similar things like this in front page so that many new comers can get some information on choosing a bike.
Here we go.
Question to ask yourself before plunging the sport of Mountain Biking
1. What kinda activity I want to join? Choices a) Ride around my taman b) Ride to school and buy groceries c) Join friends and go biking in some cross country tracks. e.g. offroad road for cars. e.g. Kelapa Sawit plantation area (where usually cars can come in but need to slow down) d) Offroad with a bit of climbing, and downhill, narrow paths (cars can't come in), a bit of drop or uneven trail e) Fast, furious downhill with jumps and extreme cornering
After choosing 1 from the above, then the next thing you need to consider...
a) Budget b) Budget c) Budget
Ha! Ha! Ha!
For Question 1) If you choose a) b) or even c) A bike ranging from RM1500 and below is acceptable. Even bike RM700 and below will still be acceptable.
For d) Try to fork out at least RM2k and above. Preferably RM4k. Anything less, you most probably will end up hating yourself for making harsh decision or you will change your bike/accessories the next round.
For e) You need RM5k minimum or preferably RM20k to start. Ha! Ha! And you need bigger balls.
Of all the above You will still need around RM100 minimum to buy helmet, gloves, water battle or hydration bag. Preferably spend RM300 minimum to get some quality goods. For info, a branded helmet will cost RM200+, a branded gloves will cost RM70 and up, a branded hydration bag wll cost around RM150 and above... usually RM200 above.
If wanna join us for weekend rides or some night rides, just let us know. We will be more than glad to assist. After you get your bike and helmet that is!
Advice 2: What the hell is Roadie, XC, AM, FR, DH?!?!
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
If u have not been riding MTBs before this... you won't know what u will like. Seriously! What you see and read in the internet are just professionals doing it. We might be frighten by AM/Freeride or DH videos in youtube but heck... you'd wish you can do that.
In Malaysia... this is the explanation of the term
XC - Cross Country Recommended Location --> FRIM, around your house. Type - Cycle up, cycle down, cycle up, cycle down. Trail condition - double track, smooth to small bumps dirt road, gravel or tarmac. Obstacles - Human, small humps.
AM - All Mountain Recomendation Location --> Kiara, PCP Type - More technical Cycle up, cycle down, push up, push down. Turn here turn there, drop less than 1 foot hill. Trail condition - Single track, double track, muddy, switchbacks, rocky, slightly bigger bumps. Obstacles - tree branches, roots, rocks, switchbacks.
FR - Freeride No Malaysian doing this currently.
DH - DownHill Recommendation Location --> Kiara, Bukit Cermin, PCP Type - Push bike up. Come downhill as fast as your balls can take. Not for pussies. TRail condition - Rocky, bigger gap jumps, muddy. Obstacles - Your balls
Adding on...
What bike to choose ...
XC Bikes - can climb better but due to headtub angle design, fork length, you will have less confidence in going downhill. AM bikes - It is in between XC and DH. So, climbing not as good as XC but better downhill confidence. So, you are always not the best in any discipline but you will enjoy almost every trails you come across. DH bikes - You usually push the bike uphill as it is very heavy and headtube angle very big. Although, some DHer can cycle up steep hills better than us. But when downhill, you are quite save and confident, so, in return, u can ride faster.
What's the diff in these bikes? XC - Light. AM, Medium weight. DH - Heavy. Durability - Usually XC and AM bike can take most of the abuse from normal bikers in Kiara or PCP or FRIM. Unless you are riding DHer style, then probably your bike's life span will reduce. Other than that, it should be ok. After all, most forumers here change their bike frame or components every few months. Ha! Ha! Ha! Only one exceptional case, every few weeks! No chance to see the component or frame fail.
Advice 3: Ok, I know I want to do mountain biking, what should I buy and how much?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
For new comers.
Question - I want to start mountain biking but I donno what bike to buy. Please advise.
Answer -
First to consider. Budget!
Budget below RM1000.00 Answer - No need ask. Just get one you think the color suits you. Heck. They are all the same. Choose these: Nexus, Exitway, Rockbike, Lerun and even to the extend Polygon <-- these are not really mountain bikes. Ha! Ha! Ha! icon_rolleyes.gif
Budget below RM2000.00 At this price range, there are many "branded" bikes to choose from hence making us more confusing. Common brands in Klang Valley. Merida, Fuji, Marin, Raleigh, Norco, BH, Polygon, Giant, Scott, and probably a few more.
What are the important things to look for?
1. Fork 2. rear cassette 3. breaks
1. Fork from lowest to better fork - SR Suntour (SRS) XCT, SRS XCM, SRS XCR, Rockshox Tora, SRS Epicon. 2. Rear cassette At this price range, it doesn't really matter but for mountain bike, ask how many "teeth" the biggest cassette has. Preferably 34T or 32T. This is very important especially for beginner. Having 8 cassette, 7 or 9 cassette doesn't really matter as long as your biggest is biggest! He! He! He! 3. Breaks Wihout doubt, hydraulic brakes will be better than mechanical disc breaks and better than V breaks. Just that at lower range product, they all perform almost the same.
What is not important?
1. Frame design - At this price, all frames probably made by 2 factories. Giant and Merida. Ha! Ha! And it doesn't matter. 2. Crank - Many shops will use this as a way of telling you their products better. But at this price range, it really doesn't matter 3. Handlebar - You look and you like... get it. Doesn't matter at all. 4. Seatpost - Same 5. wheelset - No difference one. 6. Tires - Preferably branded ones like Maxxis, Tioga, Nevegal, Schwabe, Panaracer. Any other brands - Same. 7. Rear Derailluer, Front Derailuer - Again, some use branded gimmick to lure u but it doesn't matter at all.
Most important is the front fork. This is the one that determine whether you ride happily or cursing home. Invest in this. If your budget more than 2k, use back the same as above... and look for what you want. If I were to choose, I'll make sure I get the bike with the best fork first before looking at others.

What kind of shoes do you guys usually wear to bike? I previously used by sneakers but when masuk hutan and kena mud, kena rain, teruk and smell like terrible la y'know.
Presently I am wearing these;
Not exactly the best kinda shoes for biking due to the studs at the bottom... but waterproof and senang cuci after kena mud
I know there are Shimanos, and 5Ten's... but mahal la. And not exactly waterproof (Apart from Shimanos). A friend of mine is wearing futsal shoes without studs, sound good.
Ok, morning peeps! so what is our recommended front tire for FRIM-like conditions these days? Need one because my stock Michelin Wildgripper is not grippy enough.

get the long proven nevegal la... all can ride. or maxxis advantage... more xc oriented
Haha I don't want them studs just that these are the only pair that I have presently and they're only RM9 from Klang and waterproof!
Stiff meaning - sole should be keras yes?
all shoe gonna be the same except adidas kampung, will stink with all the mud and water. what do u expect from tropical country? just wash la more often.
buy proper biking shoe la... they are built better for biking purpose. grip better, stiffer sole and some come with better cover on top to reduce splashing mud and water. but rain..or big splash still will kena.
using other shoe will either wear the sole out fast or they has too little grip on the pedal. it is ok for a start since but do try save up and buy one if u cycle very often. otherwise you spoil those running or trail shoe also a waste jer.

Since one asked about shoes i use my brother's supra bandit. High cut so it supports my ankles. And i wear jeans when cycling so it looks good.
Benefit of jeans 1. No leg itchiness after legs get hit by foliage 2. Less pain by pedal hitting your shins 3. Gets the chicks 4. Looks good if koyak 5. The protection
Disadvantages 1. Stink 2. Stink when you sweat and the sweat dries 3. Stiff when wet (that sounds soo wrong)
Tips on wearing jeans to bike 1. Wear clean ones 2. Wash after 3. Wear the ones you would like to shred 4. Heavy fabric

chainguide is not for chain drop. it's for the styles.
Agreed
Which is why I'm trying not the use the smallest chainring... Wait till I trained my muscle then I'll switch to single chainring with chainguide... hehe...

SINGLE SPEED trus... then we can test our legs. hihihi
Btw, i have my friend who is XC racer. damn fast uphill and just smooth downhill. We asked him if he has other training than just cycling. he says that he does squats. Squats is sooo painful!
Also, this article/video is good for us riders to improve and be a better rider. What are your thoughts?
Hope you guys are not sick with the photo of my bike yet
Since the day I got this bike, I always feel tat the rear tire roll left and right whenever i go over obstacles. Is it because of not enough psi? or the tire compound too soft? Tire model is Maxxis High Roller 2.35 Super Tacky.

Guys, i have a problem.. My current bb is an FSA square taper and my bike is a 2010 commencal premier vb. I bought a zee crank. And it seems that the crank shaft is quite long. I dont know if it will fit.
This is my first big purchase and i think that i am such a knobhead for not knowing there were different sizes.
Can you guys tell me if it will fit or not. Dont sugar coat it
Hope you guys are not sick with the photo of my bike yet

Your current setup is not suitable? Please elaborate. Basically, all the things that you listed down is based on personal preferences. You might like 40mm stem, I might like 50mm stem. You might like 700mm handle bar, the rest of us maybe like 900mm handle bars.

my current handlebars length 68cm n stem 80mm..so, for me, i feel my handling not good enuff around tight corners n d handlebars abit short for a stable descend or when i land after jumps..so, i wan to know wats d ideal handlebars length use for AM setup...(coz im slowly chnging to AM hardtail from xc hardtail now..hee)

i u want 40mm stem.. i have 1 to letgo.. Relic Armor like this... but mine is red color...
But I think most of us use 760-785mm handle bars with 50-60mm stems
really?? u use mainly for offroad??..my mtb mainly used for ride around town (road) n occasionally offroad (kiara, pcp,frim)...looking for ideal hndlebar length..mybe ill try 750mm??

One bike to do it all. My Enduro is more of an all rounder. Town ride, off-road, jumping, lite DH-ing... I told you, it's all down to personal preferences.
Cockpit setup: Enduro - 785mm bars with 50mm stem Vimana - 710mm bars with 40mm stem Classic track - 680mm drop bars with 60 or 70mm (lupa) stem
ddint even realise there was a LYN MTB thread anyway, 1st post, thought i post some pics of a MTB trip i went last month, really best, once in lifetime sorta trip.
everyday we are trucked to about 1200m and we ride down. Loads of diffrent terrain, lava rock, singletracks, clove plantations, paddy fields etc. Drama on 3rd day, when a friend had a bad landing after a jump, his rim buckled and he flew 10 feet down the trail....concussion, badly sprained wrist and 4 stitches. We we worried what the hospitals would be like, but it was world class, MRI and Xray done within 30min, then images sent to jakarta for 2nd consultation.
Everyday we rode about 45-55km. Accomodation, lunch, breakfast, guide, support vehicles all included in package, RM2700 per person, 6D/5N. Def will be back again, so many more trails to explore
ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET! even if you riding 5min to 7-11 to buy bread!!!

Hi there, i need some advice. Actually i thinking of getting Polygon cx29er 4.0 but currently no stock. So the bicycle shop recommended me silverback vida 2. The price of silverback is cheaper than Polygon.
Do anyone have any opinion on silverback bike? Your input is greatly appreciated..tq

last 5 years riding Merida and yeti 26...this year changed to a 29er its NIGHT and DAY diffrence. Climbing is so much easier now.
The trip is Bali, yes using our own bike, but the organizers rent out GIANT full sus bikes for small fee as well. We ddint want to risk using rental bikes, why spoil your whole trip if the bike isnt to your liking.
The hype now is 29. Anyway it all depends on your preference and your size. For me, 26 will train your strength and endurance. 29'er is good for competition. I notice a few people convert their 26'er to 27.5 rims and fork
26 vs 29 you'll pretty much like it if you ride more than you glide, a stiff frame and crank you'll feel the power transfer in an instance. Well keep both if you can. Have both ride both, but still the 29er is the go to bike for now .. "new toilet bowl ma"
If it's your first bike get a 29er, if you don't like it, it's an easy switch with someone else for their 26. if you can't seem to keep up just keep riding and you'll build up faster in time comparatively.
--> ahcat, why you wanna change your 3 pc to a 2 pc? extra chain ring weighs like a pack of cigarette. if you want simplicity, just go with 1x10 otherwise just keep it triple and dun waste money on a crank set. buy the complete group set when yours wear off. then you decide double or triple.
--> jwrx, the trip includes accommodation and meals? flight?
--> jwrx, the trip includes accommodation and meals? flight?
Flight is separate cost. But to be honest is very good value, every hotel we stayed in was 4 stars and above. For 2 days cos we are in same location, we had private villa with our own pool, living patio and outdoor dining/kitchen.
some pic of our hotels, we stayed diffrent places cos everyday trail starts from diffrent location....the best was last day, started at 1200meter, 4 hours of down hill and end at a secluded beach, where we spent the afternoon oggling ang mohs
The guide told us the previous group b4 us unlucky, water at same point was almost 2 feet high, took them 20min to slowly inch across
Since my budget range was so small so i only have a few choices.. Raleigh/ oscar/ polygon.. In the end go for nemesis bcoz wife like the color haha Poor me aite
it not about poor or not la... there always misconception about bike and its value. a lot of bikes that look like a mountain bike out there is actually meant for the tarmac; i like to call them hybrid commuter, but they are absolutely not fit for actual off road riding. you can but they were not built to last.
at this discovery stage... an entry bike selling at 3k for example may seem expensive, once you ride, know more and want more.. then you can justify to pay more for a proper make mountain bike.
no worries since you already bought... go try and ride it on actual offroad.. then you will know. just remember to be safe ..always ride with helmet ...

at this discovery stage... an entry bike selling at 3k for example may seem expensive, once you ride, know more and want more.. then you can justify to pay more for a proper make mountain bike.

I've ride a yr 1997 lerun mtb to hash 5 yrs back. Join for fun of the hype. Finished and felt proud to accomplished as some did not. It's all within your mind. Any MTB bikes, be it full, sub, hard-tail, full hard tail, as long as you have the right mind, right skills, you'll finished any terrain
BTW, I have tried cycling into the jungle with a foldie. hehhe.

want to convert from XC to AM? Got such thing wan meh? XC bikes can ride kiara wut .. depends on what you call comfort and breakproof lo even a BMX but not sure if you come out in 1 piece or not le. well I dont see why not. I would say dun waste time converting, just go and ride. But if you really want, change the frame better still and replace as others fall apart if you ride rough. 2pc crank wont make it an AM build.

Save more money change bike instead upgrade a 2x10 crank.
estimate your current bike cost: you bike : RM1200 Deore : 1000 Reba : 1200 Brake: 200 then upgrade crank: RM700
you can get a decent full-sus or a very good hardtail

of coz you can finish the terrain if the matter is about can or cannot. i ride cheaplak bike b4 also. i seen people ride RM500 steel bike too. in pinkbike, there is a dude DH and jump with a cheap steel supermarket bike. does that mean everyone should go and ride that? no right.. no everyone have his balls to risk bone breaking that way.
well, if you want to take this as a sport and ride regularly... the matter of suitability in terms of performance, enjoyment and safety in the activities.. then a better bike is a better bike. especially safety.

save your money on that crank la... changing crank now make not much different for u now.
XC to AM is like changing the whole bike already. focus on getting a AM frame and fork... if you talking AM

do not change the parts . change the frame if you find yours not to your liking . then you get new parts if it does not suit your frame . 3 major things goes in sets, frame, fork and wheel set . frame might be tapered which u will need a new fork, since getting a new fork you might as well the a TA instead of QR. Unlikely but possible that you AM frame might be BB30 u will need a new crank. Well you'll probably need a new hub from QR to TA . Your stem might not give you the needed reach with a new frame, but u can still ride unlike the others above .
bottom line, should be around 6K for a frame fork and hubs that's if the hoops can match. My advice if it's any good "sell your bike and get another, step by step is not the best choice for money" that only applies if yours is totally not suitable for your riding . it all depends on how u ride and how much you push your rides . try kiara and if you find your bike falling apart then it's time to dig your piggy bank, if you cant ride make sure you're able to break your bike then dig your piggy bank . choose your line well i can't see much harm on your existing bike.
Personally i've not been to kiara. forums are free to express correct? if it helps from being flamed I frequent PCP and Kemensah only, if it doesn't i understand.

pretty spot on advise... better off save up and get a whole new bike. like a wise man once said .. "poor man pay twice"
ahchat, you specifically said AM, not sure if you aware what AM is, AM machine are big and heavy generally. Kiara is the place for you. go ride kiara and find out the terrain first before diving into an AM machine. if you enjoy such terrain then only spent on it... otherwise AM machine on other place like FRIM or other XC places are really not much fun...

Hows Kemensah nowadays eh? I like the long descend after Bukit Pau but the last time I went there, the jalan all picah-picah...
dats d point..i just upgrade d parts dats transferable to other frame...when d time comes, d exitway frame will go
u no get the point, u transfer here and there end up the total amount u spent u only have a deore slx .. whilst u keep the cash and sell ur exitway and buy a complete bike u might get XT and shit.
I've test rode a Chumba XH1, Strong and very capable (well confident hammering through like feel) Tappered, EBB and can be build moderately light for some weekend racing.
Chameleon will be quite accessible in our market, commencal ramones if they still bring in. if i were to build I'll build a burly steel AMht. but where to ride and how often i need it?
But serious, why a AMht? just get a trance and i bet many will agree that it gets the fun where the job coincidentally gets done. Moe $$ bigger brands lo.
Ang Moh prefer HT, Rigid , SS and BB7 cuz they've got winter and all sorts of shit, simplicity = simplicity .. part no JAMmm
Big balls = hot chick ma .. thumb of rule HT makes u a better rider .. true .. but u need to know how to ride first ma then picking better lines ..

Get a better fork? If you have air fork, maybe too much air. Or you can try adjusting the rebound.

Well, i use a coil fork. Can't afford even an epicon. Lol! And i like my fork. Its a suntour XCR. Good for jumping and pumping though. Bad for comfort downhill filled with roots and step downs that are like staircases.
I masturbate quite frequently for endurance and strengthening my forearms. Trick is to alternate arms while masturbating. Lol!!!!!

damn the bikepro staff told me the scott scale 960 26er and 29er price is same but turn out he was wrong. However im getting the 29er still, its 4299 b4 10% and they have no stock....have to wait next week.

You contradict your self. Good performance mean you feel comfort Cox the fork does it job well enough during your pumping or downhill.
Then too bad, just ride more and get used to it. Your arm will used to it...
have anyone been to any trail in penang? i heard there is a trail that you can ride downhill for 1 hour and there is a jeep to fetch you back up any info guys? cheers!

headset usually different sizes cross different bike brand and bike discipline. so better check your frame ...
headset pressed in and usually we dont want to knock them out... it will usually hurt the cosmetic of the frame and headset usually. its always better to get new headset with new bearings. it is one thing that people usually get new together with the frame. old sell with the old frame. except for cases like you having an expensive chris king that you might want to still keep.
anyone knows what is the rate for courier a bicycle within west malaysia using pos laju?
it depends how heavy and how big your bike is after packing in a box.. why dont you calculate your weight at poslaju website. go to poslaju website and read about the shipping charges. they have weight vs volumetric pricing la dude...

thats definitely sound like penang hill... its quite hardcore... make sure you have the balls and well equiped.

just called pos laju. they said they do not consider weight/volumetric for bicycle. Rm95 fixed rate for 1 unit of bicycle.

I'm using a Suntour XCR as well... teruk fork. Keras like hell when DH even though rebound has been set properly. Wrists also sakit...
Epicon if you buy locally mahal. I was told that if you get from here that is if you can read mandarin, as cheap as RM400 + shipping.
TransAM if you're getting the 2011 model i believe if's a 30.9mm seat post. not so *gooding* <-- this terms used here ait? try getting the 2012 instead. but it's 2.8Kgs just for the frame (more or less). KHS no longer have these last i checked (early last year)
Steel hardtail, why not an On one Inbred, cheap and worth a try to see if you like it, or maybe a 456 instead.
If i would to build one now, it'll probably be a Cotic Soul.
XCR to an epicon upgrade? why not save a little more and get a used reba instead i see quite a number going off. Hands sakit wider tires lower PSI would be better in my opinion against XCR > Epicon

tried wd40 but no effect all at. Cant bring my old bike to bike shop since locked at home. So what does the tool do?? Cut my lock open?
okok. i thought u mean this chain lock connectors Chain Lock connectors. Anyway, Use a hammer and hammered it. Tat is what i did last time to unlock the bicycle lock

I am planning to get a MTB. Will start off at around the housing area first to build up on the fitness and then might think of delving further to take it up as a hobby..
Thinking of buying my first bike. I have done a fair bit of research, and have narrowed it down to 2 models:
1. Kona Blast 2013 - Priced at around RM2500 2. US KHS Alite 1000 - Priced price at around RM2300
I would like to know, which of these 2 are of a better value for money? Or any other bikes which you guys might be able to recommend.
I am pretty big and heavy (6 ft and almost 100Kgs).

Bro, If you would like, it is more towards your cadence when climbing. XT crank wont help you. It only helps to shift gear fast and last longer or more durable. tat it. it is the BB tat helps you. What crankset u using? Is it with BB Hollow II or BB30? Just upgrade the BB with ceramic or Tiramic or for budget service it regularly
P/S:Weight Weenie is just for those who are weak to carry their bike. Remember your bikes carries you around for long distance. how heavy are you. Your bike is at most less than 20KG. Can't carry meh. mine is 12KG and i am ok to carry it when climbing unridden path.

upgrade BB wont feel any different la.. dun simply say. ceramic/tiramic is expensive and that slight smoother bearing wont be felt unless u already have other good component to go with it at peak performance.
9 speed to 10 speed upgrade will definitely help on the climbing due to better gear ratio... 22t front with 36t rear.
weight does matter... 15kg vs 12kg big lot of different more over a 20kg bike. dun la simply give extreme different. weight weenies actually refers to those who pay dearly to drop little weight different. its a misused term btw.
for newbie, 9 speed will do now.. ride more and build the stamina. upgrading to 10 speed help but most likely u will still push bike. might as while train harder and upgrade things like the wheelset to a lighter one that give you more significant differences during your ride. rolling weight can be felt more obvious that dead weight.

yea 9 sp vs 10 all will go 10 as new tech. but which is cheaper to buy. Chg of BB surely helps What is important when climbing a hill is your cadence and gears choose. In a steep long ascend you need to change your gear gradually. Do not immediately change to the lightest gear. Also do not change at the last minute. Follow your heartbeat/rythm. if you do it you can make it. Even if it is a long climb uphill.
What do you want in cycling? The feel of riding in a terrain, climbing hill and going downhill. Playing with single track. Tat is most important. BTW, I am using 9 speed SRAM X-5 with front Deore crank with good BB. And heck i can climb hill with this. Anyway i am still with 9sp due to budget la. Anyone wants to sponsor me or donate me their unused parts which is better than what i have to me?

yes, BB wont... Shimano BB to token tiramic BB or hope ceramic BB wont feel much/any different. cadance and gear got nothing to do with BB.. BB is just the bearings. so changing bb wont feel much.
changing crank will help.. in most cases you change BB with your crank is due to different size and different crank. especially from square tapered to hollowtech crank due to lighter crank and better gear ratio. so you better dont confuse yourself or others on BB

Bro? i guess you are the one who is confuse now,,, Square tappered and HollowtechII is not a BB? Hmmm...
Anyway I know my point and I will stand to it. You can do ur test in your real life cycling and logic. Which is smooth and which better if you compare to ceramic and normal BB. If you have a not smooth BB, do you need extra energy to kick the pedal and most of your energy will go to this instead of rotating the crank? If you have a smooth BB, ur kicking will mostly go towards the crank movement instead of fighting the friction.
Anyway it's all up to one riders. I am just pointing from my experience of riding.
Some to add: I advised on ceramics or tiramic mainly because it reduces friction or drag when pedalling compared to normall provided. If you do not plan to change your BB, regular cleaning of your BB would help alot to remove this friction.

No dude... Square tappered and HollowtechII is not a BB!! they are called spindle. spindle are part of the crankset. but they are related to BB. what you referring is the crankset. get your terms right and not to confuse others. but if you say change crankset help on climb.. yes due to weight and the gear ratio. the number of teeth on the crank, smaller number of teeth mean climb better. lighter weight also help with rotating weight. nothing to do with bb bearing being steel or ceramic. they must be smooth regardless of bearing type, otherwise is wear and tear liao.
BB is the bottom bracket... changing crankset with different splindle type requires the change of BB to fit due to different diameter or width.
if you are using the same crankset and change BB from standard BB to ceramic or tiramic makes no different. So please give advise with correct terms, imagine people listen and go change the BB only will waste money. if no believe, keep your deore crank and change your BB to ceramic bearing and see.

since u've read i am using deore, do u read that i am using tiramic as well? anyway i have put a point why i choose to use it because i need less maintenance/cleaning due to friction and it do help on my pedalling. As an avid MTB rider, I've always had my bike dirty and regular maintain as dirt and mud always get into these parts (the bearings. I had to removed the seal and greased the bbearings). I a little lazy to always clean and service my bike so i look for something with less maintenance. I do not really force anyone to change or buy. No harms. keep on pedalling bro. If these offended then sorry la... I am just a normal rider who love riding offroad.

offend not taken,
but come on la...keep your ego. the point is not about ceramic or tiramic... what i am saying is correcting you on the wrong advice you given saying about "changing BB will help on the climb"... u merely giving wrong advise with wrong and confused terms. on otherhand, changing crankset will help. that should be the right term since you confused and interchange crankset with BB.
and secondly, changing ceramic / or tiramic do not mean you need less maintenance. changing better BB with better seal might. ceramic or tiramic is only referring to the type of ball bearing used in the BB.

From what I know, if you change anything related to rotational mass (wheels, hubs, bb, cranks), it'll help you pedal better.
Changing to XT 10-speed groupset will help better at climbing because of the extra gear ratio. The 36t definitely helps compared to 34t.
Changing from square taper bb to external bearing bb might help, not too sure on this. But changing from normal bearing to tiramic, ceramic, etc. WILL NOT help unless you are at Anuar Manan level.

Hmmm... guess that is true as well. better seal means less maintenance. hhh. I really am lazy to wash my bike every time i go offroad. Once a mth i washed her. not every ride.
Smooth BB feel different if u do cadance ride, those >90rpm for distance of 15-20km type ride (usually u need to 30-50km xc ride to achieve these dist). Else no different.
If buy now, better get 10speed. Mainly due to better gear ratio and easier sourcing part replacement.
Generally, get as light as ur budget allow to buy. rest is depend rider fitnest and type of ride; but lighter bike definitely open better ride experience and ride choice to the rider.

I am not sure if it's possible to service your BB's bearing. It it ain't stuck don't change it. Agree fully on better BB provides better seal hence little maintenance but still it gets jammed up too. these Ceramic and sort does not wear that fast if i understand properly (less heat build up). But you'll really need to be pedaling hard to see them wear out before anything else. Replacing chains .. and I say YES provided the teeths are still ok.
Better cranks = lighter but needs to be stiffer too. flex will sap out. Stiffer frame = better climb (this i experience my self), but you'll need better spokes to feel it flow through.
9spd t 10 spd, erm.. i only feel the smaller ratio gap (if you ride cadence more than half your rides), but how often u guys spin out 22-34 or even 36 anyway? I do not have a 22, but a 26-36 does the job well for where I'm riding.
12kgs, well you should try a 10kg bike if you have the chance. sometimes it's how efficient you can be to enjoy the game, 12kg for XC is ok for a hardtail but 15kgs will be slightly overkill. yep rotational wt on the wheels does feel a lot of a diff.
popcorn time, everyone thinks differently, it's when you take time to listen, that's the time you learn. may it be right or wrong, sharing is gooding.

depend on design, some bb can change the bearing catriage. usually aftermarket bb can do that, eg hope, chrisking and such. but hey shimano bb are cheap. ceramic is smoother but only noticeable if u have have iron leg like anuar manan. but then they cracks easier than steel balls.
best bet is stainless steel bearings for longer lasting. most come with steel and they rust.
10 speed does help imo... but not a major fallback if still riding on 9 speed. if upgrade, it should be the last item to consider, upgrade other component like wheel and crankset make better difference.

I now using 9 speed, crankset if change xt the teeth is same y will lighter really dont understand, is it Bzos BB? Leg power need a time upgrade, everytime cycle upper of my leg part feel pain also dont know what is the reason...
Upper leg pain? I suggest doing other sorts of training to build muscle strength and endurance. Do squats and better if u have dumbells or a barbell, weighted squats. and dont forget do deadlifts.
These two lifts help a lot for riding. Keeping our back strong as well as power transfer through the legs. Try bodyweight squats and pistol squats and see if ur climbing gets better. For muscle endurance, do timed squats. hold for as long as you can. make sure u have good form.
And when you ride, dont forget to warm up properly. Warm up then do the appropriate stretches.
The carbon Bronson really looked yummy I would have a hard time choosing the colour of the frame decals and the Enve rims decal... (if I got the money )

no need to change anything! just ride more build up leg power! BB, crank, ceramic bb, tahi kerbau bb all meaningless! if want to change, change the whole bike to something totally lighter n better bb, crank etc. talk here is wasting time only, just ride more until you geng already want to change bike then come back n talk some more! haha
since u've read i am using deore, do u read that i am using tiramic as well? anyway i have put a point why i choose to use it because i need less maintenance/cleaning due to friction and it do help on my pedalling.
10 years i ride my jamis HT also never service BB, still going strong!
I noticed a lot from HT HiFi turned photogeeks then bike .. why eh? who went from r/c to HT Hifi before turning up here?

Apart from preventing drop chain. The most important function is to make your bike look cool like pro rider.
Haleluya!!!!
Regarding BB efficiency and bike performance...
Well, the whole bike does contribute to your cycling efficiency. BB, headset, crank, pedal, seatpost, saddle, handlebar and even the decals on your bike. The question is how much?
People pay hundreds for carbon seat post to save 30gr. Does it help? Yes. How much? donno.
Will ceramic bb helps? Sure... How much? Donno. Unless you want to go into technical calculation, trials and etc.
But... at the end... it is just a recreational sports where you make friends and bros. Just go toilet and do your morning banking before you ride. He! He! U already shaved at least 100-500gr depending on ur bank account...
And enjoy the sport before Nerve Impingement comes into picture...

walao BB war eh? i tell u my story la, long time ago about 10++ year i got my first no brand freaking heavy steel with no fork on front and rear bike. i ride frim almost everyday, even ride from frim to hospital sg. buloh offroad. i come out hospital sg buloh already 8pm....then i ride back kepong alone LOL oops that time no have hospital
the moral of the story is just enjoy your ride with whatever you have. i enjoy alot with steel bike until it was stolen....
Chain guide is used to look cool apart from preventing chain drops and chain slaps. Chain guide with double ring, you're cool. Chain guide with single ring + 36t, you're powah ridaaahhhhh!

I agree with this sort of experience. Used to have rusty raleigh steel heavy like the titanic mountain bike. Loved the hell out of it and rode it everywhere and to school 6 years ago. and then it got stolen. But it got me hooked on biking till now.
Used to ride GTA after i lost my steely. Weird Easing forks and very very basic components. Im talking shimano TZ basic. Lighter but the frame flexes during climbs. But it did teach me a lot of things. How to pedal better, how to hop onto curbs. Now the bike has been rebuilt to be a pasar/touring bike.
Use the bikes well, no matter what it is. Want to pedal faster, make time and train. The engine is our heart, the dream is in it as well.

For me, its good that people ride what they have and do what they want it. Want to ride downhill on a towny? Try it. Want do DJ on an XC bike? Do it.

Like this ah... Why u don't wear sarong go work? Why u use computer instead of chalk n blackboard? There is a thing called improvement. And technological advancement.
Yeah... U can walk from Klang to KL but you don't. If there is a more precise bike for the purpose... Why don't we? You probably r one of those driving a Kancil at 200km/h on Highway and proud about it without thinking yours, family and others' safety.

Hi,
I wanted to buy a mountain bike but not sure what size to buy. I am 6'1" tall so I suppose I shoud go for a 20"frame size?
I prefer folding type so it can easily fit in my car so I am considering the Hummer but I am open to other brand.
Budget less than RM1k to 2k max.
Any recommendation?
Probably you go folding bike forum will get a better answer. Over here... Anything below 3k... We ask u choose the color you like.

I understand this point completely. Being someone doing HSE (the E part) research. It is vital to be proper. I'm not here to debate on that particular subject matter. But i think its nicer to have the Nike mentality: Just do it. Want to climb faster, pedal harder. Want to get more air? Build bigger. Thats all. But having that, we must put into considerations, our capabilities and analyse the risks involved. Instead of just being a consumerist and being elitist into a certain discipline of this amazing sport. To each, his own. If one can afford, by all means, go for it.
Im sorry for any harsh or hostile approach that i have may induce in my posts.
No, not really... anyway, to answer your original question, a folding mtb is a no-no if you're planning to go off-road with it. You don't want the frame to fold when you're going downhill or taking a drop now would you? Hummer bikes are not proper mtb. It's more for recreational and I think falls into folding bike category. For folding bikes, it's best you ask about folding bike questions in Folding bike thread (if there is one) or Commute by Cycling thread (if there is one).

Some advise here is harsh... In reality, we jus dont want u spend on something that dont work....
Mtb cover quit wide, from dj to xc to dh, choose one u wan to do and get a proper bike. If you new to mtb, prolly u no idea which disipline yet in real life, then its better get a rm2-3k do it all HT to learn wat is mtb.
Most lol ppl is those insist take dj bike go do hash, take dh bike go do enduro and at the end you cant enjoy mtb not because u cant, but because u equip with wrong intended bike...

Second hand bike. Maybe a real DJ frame. Previously in BBS can get a DJ frame for RM800 or so. Slow-slow build up. If really serious, I'm sure the avid cyclist can save up some money. If one can buy expensive smart phone, why not a bicycle too eh?

Alritey. But thing is i like how things are getting less rigid now. Bikes are designed to be multi disciplined orientated. Companies like dartmoor and blk mrkt really pushing the limits of design.
Hopefully things turn out to be cheaper though. Have to always look at BBS and grab deals as they come.

Get a Long travel hardtail: DH faster then xc bike, Pedal better then DJ bike, Jump better then folding bike. Sounds better? kekeke
Thanks guys. I am not really going for mountain biking with jumps etc. I am too old for that kind of risk. Basically what I want is to go cycling with friends with some offroad like pebble road or dirt road with some pot-holes etc.
I read the Hummer or Montague is a full size MTB that can really go offroad as the folding mechanism is different from those road foldies. It might suit my needs but they are too many chinese fake around so trying to get a "real"one might be a challenge.
The other reasons I need folding type is because I need it to fit my trunk so I can drive to meet my friends as my area is not suitable for cycling.

get a good quality one, normally its user error. u need to clean the part that stick to your car before u mount. tie up front wheel and put on a sock on the pedal and you are good to go.
u can opt for roof rack system which cost min 2K or get a pick-up truck.
Hey guys, Just now I was browsing through bikes at a shop in penang. As I went in to look around for a starter bike they asked me to get merida matts 400 (or something like that) has nine speed and what not for 1.9k+-
So I wonder if i can get anything better for that price. Only cycled when i was young. still debating weather to get a mountain bike or a road bike. but apparently they said that mountain bike is better in penang as got alot of off trails and when wanna cycle on the road just cycle. Hmmm. Any advises?
For scott oh gv 5% off bikepro gv 10% if not mistaken both on same list price
oh thanks. actually i mean the accessories like helmet, glove, copmuter, bla bla bla i got scott scale 660 from bikepro for 3.6k last week

road bike and mtb is really different, u may want to rethink which one u like or suit u the most. however he is right that mtb still can ride on road just not as efficient as road bike

u might want to consider this... but the seller want to sell frame only...
I contacted him but he is not sure if it is original Montague as his friend bought it from HK. Might be a china knockoff asking for RM1350 just for the frame only.
upgrade BB wont feel any different la.. dun simply say. ceramic/tiramic is expensive and that slight smoother bearing wont be felt unless u already have other good component to go with it at peak performance.
I ride is Raleigh hydra 29er.... n my weight is 98kg, 6 feet hight.... I always ride to sungai buloh to Frim, then Frim to sungai buloh... but if want direct ride up the other hill at Frim pines peak cant liau.... if I ride on road 30km got a bit uphill still ok...

Its a bike boutique. U won't get the best price like someone's father's shop... but you also won't get slaughtered because of noobness.
Some bike shops around Klang Valley go for 5-15% discount rate. Some... suka suka open price.

its all boils down to your budget... around RM2k.. merida is ok ...infat not much good brand bike u can find at that price range. if you unsure, its ok to test water with such bike..once you like it, spend on a better a bike with more justification

no need to change anything! just ride more build up leg power! BB, crank, ceramic bb, tahi kerbau bb all meaningless! if want to change, change the whole bike to something totally lighter n better bb, crank etc. talk here is wasting time only, just ride more until you geng already want to change bike then come back n talk some more! haha
Agreed! Train legs only.... 15 years ago bikes weren't as light as they are now but yet people are riding like crazy and hardly mod like crazy like these days. As long you get your right pace, candence, sure can wan!

the moral of the story is just enjoy your ride with whatever you have. i enjoy alot with steel bike until it was stolen....
Agreeable! I use to own a steel frame cap ayam bike with Acera FD and RD and even more cekai cap ayam crank. Steel fork with threaded headset and V-brakes only. Go offroad like gila-gila every weekend with schoolmates! Ride from 5am - 2pm! Last time memang power... now if like that pengsan halfway thru

I don't like bike rack. The sometimes cause nasty scratch and dents on the car
Seasucker la. I know many will argue on how reliable the thing is - but you gotta know, it's cheaper than a thule roof rack for sure, and you can transfer from 1 vehicle to another, and scratchless... question is - do you trust it? Its used for military applications and you guys should watch them videos end user posted on Youtube. It's crazy strong! Just that most people would think that you know, physically pasang on the roof feel safer rather than to use Seasucker
3k can only buy u beginner XC bike. since your terrain is all XC and friend are doing XC..why want a AM bike? AM bike is heavy and will be under utilized.

ive been cycling on 32T chainring for a month now and its sufficient for all the trails i go too .What i was actually looking at is to get a lighter crank any recommendations? some has told me to get a XT crank and remove the other chainrings .

if 32t is ok then just remove the chainring on your existing crankset la... unless u want some odd number chainring then you have to buy aftermakret chainring.
no need buy new XT unless buying new is what you intend.
lighten the crank by unbolting the chainrings which only weight about a pack of cigarettes is not going to help much, get new superlight wheels. now that will really lose rotational mass and unsprung weight to help acceleration and responsiveness.

I am not regular biking so I really don't want to mount anything on my car. I just want a bike that can go in the boot.
Thanks. I have call them and they are having a promo now. The Montague Paratrooper is selling Rm2888 now and the Paratrooper Pro is selling RM3500. I am not ready to spend so much on a bicycle now as I hardly use it. Just want it LOL.

very new to this.. and looking for MTB mostly for jaunts around Bandar Utama, Tropicana area (no serious off-roading, at least not yet..)
I only plan to spend around 1.4k tops. So far I saw to bikes that caught my eyes
Lerun Evo 30- comes with SRS SCM fork, Shimano Acera shifter
KHS Alite 100- uses the Microshift TS70 shifter (not sure how it compares with the Acera), not sure about the fork as it's not stated.
The Lerun retails for about RM1.5k but i think can nego for less, the KHS i believe less than RM1.2k.
Need advise from sifus which is the better buy, or if there's a better buy out there. XDS? Exitway?
United Bikes, sold at KSH, looks solid for a look as well. Its a bit heavy but the frame welds looks really neat and tidy. I suggest u have a look at this one too.
last time I once ask here whater should I bought Scott Scale 960 or not. End up i didnt buy the bike & upgrade my existing bike. Currently using Raleigh Elite Disc, more than 2 years using this bike.
1. Tyre change to WTB Nano 2.0 2. Saddle WTB (didnt remember the model) 3. Fork change to Epicon x1 remote 4. Handlebar & stem change to Funn Full On 5. Disc brake before using mechanical type. Now bought a second hand shimano deore through BBS 6. Install front & rear fender brand GUB 7. then bought Cat Eye Rapid 5 & Judo for lighting. Hope it can last longer than previous cheap one that i use
but not buy all this in lump sum. slow slow upgrade. really love the new setup & price cheaper than buying a new scott.

Awesome upgrade. Epicon is a very good choice. How does the setup feel? I know u like the frame right? I hope there is going to be a drivetrain upgrade. Better cranks etc.
Cunnya... now if only we can barspin. hahaha! Love how they integrated their headtube with hidraulic gyros.
Nice slopestyle bike that is heading into production, you can also check another one by Rocky Mountain, their Slayer Slopestyle is also going into production. Costing almost USD4 grand for a complete bike, pretty pricey!
Sadly, the community here doesn't do much tricks with their bikes because they prefer an all-rounder bike that can do every discipline a little bit of everything. Or they're just too old to do a backflip or 360's.

yes. once the thing worn out then only gonna upgrade it.. feel is nice. already used to the new handlebar. Funn Full On length is 750mm. Before using it with original feel not nice. After change the stem as well now is ok.. the Epicon is much2 lighter than the original fork.

I just changed to 710mm bars and 35mm stem myself. Super twitchy just the way i hoped for. The only problem is its getting harder to get through my door. Haha! Have u tried any jumps or drop offs on the epicon?

750 for an XC bike is too long. 700 is ok. Long handlebar meant for AM/FR/DH for stability. But u tend to feel sore after long ride.

thanks bro. yes sometime i also feel like that. 750mm quite tricky when cornering. but when downhill quite stable. maybe will cut the handlebar a bit when got free time.

not yet do any jump or drop off. will review here once i did.

yup, i think 700mm is unuff, unless ur hand is very2 long
Twist shifters are ok. Someone i know who races used twist shifters for his training bike. And he is damn fast
twist shift or rapidfire is an individual preference but most here are on rapidfire myself included. and you too can be damn fast when you have the LEG POWWA!
Actually that rotor are made to break in the middle of trail. Notice those DH racer always faster after mid trail? coz their rotor already broken. probably the brake fluid leak all over the rotor.
