Since you say wanna join ur friends... it is better to ask your friends first what to get. Narrow down your choices. Then, probably easy for us to help.
But read page 1 for an idea.

I mean I wan to get a bike 1st so that i can join members riding...

3k can only buy u beginner XC bike.  since your terrain is all XC and friend are doing XC..why want a AM bike? AM bike is heavy and will be under utilized.

alot of bike you can get at 3k... go shop around and do some homework see which you like then spell it out here for more advice.

any shops recommend in selangor area?

Can. Pm me ur number when u r ready. Usually ride on road to kiara/kdcf, starting just before 7am. Sat or sun, it depends. Around 45mins on road, spend 1.5hrs in the trails, then 45mins back. Home by 10am before wife wakes up smile.gif. This is my every weekend free-entry jamboree ride to relieve stress

Anyway, fyi I will be riding tomoro morning, so feel free to come along. Btw invitation open to all other SJ kakis as well. Will ride at pace comfortable for the whole group
*

Road distance is about 12-13km. FYI the route I normally use to go Kiara is Subang -> Sunway Mentari -> Cable bridge -> SS1 -> SS2 -> Tropicana Mall -> TTDI (Kiara). Normally avoid high traffic roads as much as I can (no choice at cable bridge though).

For KDCF, after SS1, I head towards taman megah -> dataran prima -> tropicana -> sunway giza -> KDCF. Distance this way is 15-16km I think.

Anyway, got ur number. Will contact u soon

for fork, just stick to fox or RS Recon n above.

Rest is not really worth the money for what u get..

epicon should be good enough for beginner... ride more and learn then in future time u will know what fork suit u...

you just choose brand; travel of fork need to follow your frame.

there is no such thing as know what fork suit your skill unless u talking switch from XC to AM or to DH.
*
when the rider know wat's going on, rider will choose the brand and model he want depend on the budget...

btw, i think epicon should be good for entry level...

overtighten? but then it should still be smooth turning...
how long have your freeplay headset been left until the fix?
if too long you might want to remove the bearing and check if it moving ok.. could have busted from the freeplay
*
have a minor crash on sunday... just a minor freeplay, coz I bought a new stem for change myself yesterday...

so when I tighten it, it became hard to turn, like lock up... no smooth feel...

few weeks i tighten it but it is smooth turning.

if bearing kong, can replace it or nid to change a new headset?
