QUOTE(Dannyl @ May 3 2013, 09:58 PM)
Hi hi!  Recently got 2 tortoises to teach my kids about responsibility (feeding them, monitoring the water cleanliness, etc).  I was wondering, how much water is ideal?  I saw the FP which says 4-6 inches?  Isn't that too much?  Googled around and realized most people keep their tortoises dry (or are those Western tortoises)?  The tortoises need to breath above water, right?  If it's too much, how do they sleep?  Mine don't seem to climb onto the ledge at all.

Thanks for any guidance.

If using that container just enough so they get to dry land to dry themself if they want to !!

These are Red Ear Slider to be exact , a type of turtle and not Tortoise !!

Tortoise live on dry land they cant swim !!

One of my favourite turtle species, love to see how they use their tongue to fishing. I don't keep them simply because they eat meat(that can cost a lot) and I worry that my finger will be gone suddenly while I feeding them.

This is one of those type of pets that are kept and admire from a distant , not a hands on pet that allow petting !!
They get huge and require 2 to move about if needed

erm ....want ask are there any place for common snapping turtle to give away ?? for a new owner to adopt them??

coz my house having very limited space unable to cater their needs anymore for 2 common snapper , both about 10 inch size

i really dont want give away i last time battle hard to save them at the pet store badly sick almost dead but i manage to cure them bring them to KL animal hosp already been following me for the past 5 years.

give to zoo no idea how well will they be taken care .....so abit stuck no idea what to do....release to wild will be a dangerous decision

i tried giving them adapt to wild , giving them live fish to catch but doesnt seem to be interested instead of food it became friends , use to eat fish / prawns but recent years doesnt like to take fish anymore.

so i dont know how are they going to survive in the wild and i want give away to owners appreciate them , instead get from me and sell to black market and get slaughtered vmad.gif

Hi mic_tcs,

Sorry for imposing on your post! tongue.gif

Wow.. how big is your leopard? It looks like a male from the plastron but the tail is quite short. Still small?

I read it somewhere saying that the pink line in the middle of the plastron is the growth line.

The anal scute is supposed to be longer covering the tail.

Just sharing my limited knowledge.. shakehead.gif

Sorry hijack your post, deviating the questions. From the pictures of the scutes, are these considered pyramid as some forumers here mentioned in the past.

My opinion is that it has little bit of pyramid... this should be a male, if i'm not mistaken. My worry for him is that he doesn't grow much. Only recently notice the changes in the scutes and the line...

He should be a male. About the anal scute, I'm not sure. But I do have the concern that the shell is not growing.
