Hi, I've been reading TTT thread for many years and this is my first ever post. First of all, I would like to say a big thank you for those knowledgeable and experienced hobbyists for willing to share their valuable and useful knowledge so that beginner like me can know more about how to take good care of a tortoise. This thread had taught me a lot .I am also feeling proud and glad that a lot of experienced hobbyists in Malaysia are actually breeding the tortoise. Especially for those endangered species. I really think that it is part of our job to stop the endangered species from being extinct and it is also my ultimate goal as a hobbyist. I will continue learning so that I can finally breed them one day and stop them from being extinct.
I currently having a pair of radiated tortoise. One of them is growing smoothly but the other one is having the problem of fused scutes.
The one that have fused scutes is around 8 inches long.

As for their diet, I feed them plantain, hisbiscus flower+leaves, cabbage, opuntia cactus, mulberry leaves, sweet potato leaves and sometimes carrot. I bask them on a daily basis under the morning sunlight(7-9am).

I tried to brush the fused scutes using a toothbrush everyday but nothing seem to have changed. I understand that it might be hard to recover since the tortoise is not that young anymore but I just don't feel like doing nothing and let the fused scutes to be worsen by time. Are there anything else that can be done to improve the fused scutes of my tortoise? Thank you very much smile.gif

Someone posted this picture on this thread a few  Version ago !! Looks like the exact same few scutes as yours that got fused togather !!

No update from that poster ....... !!

So............  whats the point of having a one sided discussion with no feedback later on !!
Cheers

I know that feeling when you are like reply to you own post. I feel sorry about that but I can't control how people choose to post and run away. I can only assure you I won't do the same thing as they did. I will be more than willing to share my knowledge and experiences about this species, if I have any. I am still on the process of reading all the posts in TTTthreads all over again, but this will take months.Hope I can find more information about radiated tortoise as it is one of the rare and e ndangered species.

I know , thus contributing less and less but still I am doing my part !! If not I am long gone like many others sifu and senior of this thread !!
Cheers

Well, the only thing I can say is I feel sorry but I can't do anything since I can't control their action..
So you should pass your knowledge and experience to me and let me be the next sifu, then I can at least discuss with people and contribute to TTT community like you did.
Without student without sifu right. If nobody willing to teach and pass the knowledge to noob like me, all sifu will be gone one day, and all the new "sifu" will never be as great as the old sifus flex.gif

phew, I just found the picture that you mentioned about in page 33 of TTT V4, after reading for 4 hours straight, but I never noticed any useful and effective treatment for fused scutes yet. Guess I will have to continue reading all the posts rclxub.gif

Hi guys, i'm new here. I bought a pair of tortoises at the market a month ago. Today when i was cleaning them i realize that their shells are soft. Is it normal? I'm worried.
*
Mind to share what species of tortoise are they?
Soft shell syndrome may be due to lack of Calcium and sunlight exposure?
Calcium is needed for bones development and sunlight is needed for the vitamin D synthesis, which is needed for Calcium absorption.

Below is what I found in the first page of this thread..

And this is what I read from the tortoiseforum, credit to madkins007, a moderator of that forum.

Wooh, I think sifu can simply form a few tortoise football team and let different tortoise species from different region to have a football match between each other.

And about the white spot that you mentioned, is that fungal infection? It will only happen on turtles shell or it will also happen tortoise species? A few hobbyists in older threads posted turtles with those white spot problem but I rarely seen any hobbyists posted that their tortoise having the same issue? hmm.gif

Let me share few pictures of my RT, and hopefully more people will be willing to share pictures of their beloved tortoise biggrin.gif

PS: All pictures were captured last year.

For the last one, I got him last year from a LFS near my house. He was mistreated by his previous owner since very young age.
The previous owner kept him in a plastic container filled with water all the time (thought it was a turtle, luckily that the previous owner never drown him).
The main foods that the previous owner used to feed him with are dog food and kangkung.
I could have bought another healthy RT with an extra RM200 but I just can't let him suffer anymore..
Until today, the condition of its shell had never been improving but at least he won't need to suffer from poor living condition and poor husbandry anymore, and I've never regret that I decided to bought him instead of a healthy RT smile.gif

I just simply love the radiation pattern of your radiated tortoise.
The unique "radiation look" on their shell and their chubby face and legs are the main reason why I love radiated tortoise so much
Hopefully I can be one of the radiated tortoise breeder somedays flex.gif
Just think about the feeling when I see the babies radiated tortoise pip out from the eggs is enough to make me crazy wub.gif
Such a wonderful creature biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Glad you knew what causes the reduce traffic in this thread !!

Just to inform you that this guy's fused scute is much worse than the previous one and has affected the overall shape , nothing can be done now unlike the previous one with only 3or 4 fused !!

If he is a Male , he should still be able to breed (hopefully ) But if Female her eggs may not develop properly or get stuck while being laid - shell towards end to tail part rather flatten !!

Cheers
*
Yeah, I realized that and I didn't put any hope on breeding this one.
Hopefully he is a male and so that he will never need to worry about the problem of egg binding...
And that is the main reason why I am looking to buy in few more pieces of radiated tortoise.
Three minus one is two, and the chances that I get one male and one female is rather low.
I think I'll need at least 5-6 pieces in total if I really want to breed them, and that sounds like a dream to me, especially after the enforcement of those stupid laws.. vmad.gif

One of my favourite turtle species, love to see how they use their tongue to fishing. I don't keep them simply because they eat meat(that can cost a lot) and I worry that my finger will be gone suddenly while I feeding them.

Huh? What do you mean by mushroom like turtle? Which species are you talking about?

QUOTE(smsseah5 @ May 15 2013, 12:59 AM)
u guys got soak them everyday?
*
I soak those younger one in warm water everyday (besides rainy days) for around 10 minutes.
For those older one, I soak them like two times per week and sometimes I like to spray them using pipes and watch them do some rain dance.

What do you all think about these 2 Aldabra offered at RM 7000 each in Adpost ?

This thread is warming up again ?

Saw quite a few sources selling aldabra recently, even some popular pet shop is selling them.
Aldabra is out of my list due to their gigantic size.
Just imagine how many tons of veggie and grass they will consume per day when they grew up. sweat.gif

QUOTE(ghostcommand @ May 25 2013, 08:00 PM)
Hi all, I have one RES (didn't know what turtle it was until I googled) about the size of a small dinner plate. I took it in when the security guards at my area found it as my area have a forest nearby at Kota Damansara. I've been looking after it for a few months now, but since I'm going to the UK to study, I don't want my parents to have the burden of looking after it.

I think it might have had a previous owner, but I really have no idea what to do with it now. Keeping it in a large basin at home and feeding it regularly + making sure the water is clean. I'd prefer to give to someone who will give it a home and take care of it well smile.gif I think releasing it in the wild will kill it because I've seen these RES being sold at nearby pet shops and suspect this one came from there. Any ideas?
*
Releasing RES into the wild is a very bad idea.
RES is a highly invasive species and it can simply out-competes our native species.
Many people keep RES due to its cheap price and cute looking when they are small.
When they become bigger, more aggressive and lost their "cute face", people always tend to release them into the wild.
I can simply point out at least three lakes that are full of RES near my home.

I am just a backyard breeder who do " cash and carry " only .
Who-ever( those that i know ) willing to come pick up i may sell - my sending limited to within Sabah only ( for fear my animals will suffer in transit )

Some i only offer local as imports are common ie sulcata , footed !! Some i offer out as none or limited produced oversea - Impressa , burmese star .... !!
I dont sell here ie "LYN " because i wont sent and i bet not many willing to come pick up Borneo !!

BUT my babies are all over - who knows maybe some pets of yours are bred by me !!

Cheers
*
Then your "backyard" must be really huge!!
Wish I could be a "backyard" breeder like you someday.
Our climate is almost perfect for most tortoise species.
If more people are willing to work on tortoise, less import will be needed as we can produce almost all species locally, thus help a little in the conservation of rare species as well.

Hi,

Do u guy mix different species of land tortoise in one enclosure or keep them separately.
*
I used to mix my 4-5inches star and radiated together until the
Star tortoise became too aggresive and keep trying to bite my radiated. I heard that mixing species is not a good idea since different WC species might carry different type of germs which can be fatal to other species. Tortoise from different regions also require different type of husbandry and it is not easy to have two type of environment at the same time in one enclosure.

Some species might be suitable to mix together but I'm not knowledgeable enough to provide information on this.
