Plextor using marvell controller, which it's good at reliability, while other SSD like OCZ, Corsair etc using SandForce, which it's good at performance but stability wise....not so much...

You won't notice much difference for both controller in real life ...unless you benchmark all of'em
*
Their stability is okay now, i'm using Kingston SSD right now, they are fine SSD.
but the write performance may be come worst if the drive is dirty, and may not restore properly unless secure erase the whole SSD.

QUOTE(lonelyhouse @ Apr 14 2013, 12:29 AM)
Plextor's write is quite low compare both?
*
Imho Plextor are better, because an SSD using newer controller such as Marvel, do not suffer poor performance when copy/writing incompressible(FLAC audio, h264 video, JPEG/PNG image) data.

Sandforce driven SSD may look good on benchmark, because they use ATTO which by default using compressible data. If they were using AS SSD or ATTO with incompressible settings, their benchmark result would look crappy lol.

AHCI supports TRIM and faster than IDE.

QUOTE
TRIM enables the SSD to handle garbage collection overhead, which would otherwise significantly slow down future write operations to the involved blocks, in advance.

IDE mode :
read seq. : 255,1
write seq : 91.61
read 512k : 169.3
write 512k : 91.11
read 4k : 23.80
write 4k : 64.17

AHCI mode :
read seq. : 268,8 (+ 5.37%)
write seq : 90,43 (-1.29%)
read 512k : 205,2 (+21,20% !!!)
write 512k : 90,82 (-0.32%)
read 4k : 24.02 (+ 0.92%)
write 4k : 66.41 (+ 3.49%)

If you don't care about benchmarking and just use it for normal usage 24/7, Plextor M5S is the best choice for you. Best bang for buck in the market at the moment.

You should try to google it yourself sweat.gif
Sandisk Extreme is just another Sandforce Driven SSD, which perform similar to Kingston HyperX, OCZ, Corsair, Gskill SSD, Intel 330, ect.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/d...gb_4.html#sect0

The newer one is Sandisk Ultra Plus, iirc.

I saw ALL IT intel 330 120gb @ rm 269

Reach ALL IT only to find out is out of stock.

End up going back to ViewNet for Plextor M5S 128GB @ rm 295.

Based on my test. I don't see any different in boot up time using Plextor M5S 128GB and 256GB when spec show read speed almost the same.

For newbies into SSD, don't look at speed. But look at bargain and good controller such as Marvel. The main aim for SSD is boot up speed. Loading PC GAMES, not much different feel. Perhaps a bit of improvement during game load.

hey guys, want to ask something. I never used an ssd before for my laptop, and thinking of upgrading.

from what I see, plextor m5s is good. what do you guys think of the 240gb version? or getting the 120gb is sufficient enough?

Especially for a laptop, the more space = the better.
I think the 256GB version M5s goes for around RM600 right now, not too bad... so if you have the budget, definitely yeah go for it.

If you really do store nothing except essential programs for day to day use, then a 120GB SSD will suffice.
You get about 112GB of usable space from a 120GB unit. 20GB or so goes to the OS, leaving you with 92GB for programs, photos, music. Do keep in mind that some SSD's do get a little slower the more they are filled up.
Plextor M5 Pro units do not seem to have this issue though.
