Hi,
Maybe you can check AA for promo price. Early this year, i booked (KL ~ Osaka ~ KL) 1month before my trip, only rm1,058 (2pax). I go Osaka & Kyoto only. Maybe you can estimate 1 meal 1,000yen per pax (max), so 1 day, spend for meal about 3,000 yen (per pax).Me & husband always share the food there coz too big portion. If eat too full, then can not try other food already. So as we passedby the restaurant, saw good food, we just enter. We really enjoy the food there. Once you are there, better don't so calculative. If not, then can not enjoy already.
As for transport, u can buy the day pass. cheaper. We spend about rm8,5k for our japan trip (10days, 9nights including transport from our house to airport (2ways), AA ticket, accomodation (4*), transport, souvenier, including telephone bill that cost us rm400).

visit kinkakuji for 2 hours? you sure?

i went there and around less than 30 min i already finish touring there lol. unless you stop and do some prayers or eating some snack at some stalls there, at most you will stay there is around 1 hour cause you go there and look at the golden temple and some other scenic view, nothing more.

Of course you can visit some other temples/shrine near kinkakuji like the ryoanji temple.

are you going there alone or with friends?

Do not worry about the crowds there, kinkakuji temple have enough place for you to take pictures. The only thing you need to worry about weather forecast lol. If the rain is too heavy, u might need to consider a back up plan.

I do not know about the time between ryoanji and kinkakuji for bus transit. I walked there, it took around less than 20 mins to get there i guess? I took a bit of time coz it was raining. I visit kinkakuji during raining as well. A small crowd was there as well, with umbrellas and it did not obstruct my view of camera.

if you finish earlier, you can catch a bus from arashiyama to nishiki market, from arashiyama bus no. 11 to Shijo-Takakura. Or somewhere around there likes Shinkyogoku-dori, Kawaramachi-dori & Ponto-cho-dori.
What about Gion area? suggest u go during evening, aim for Geisha drool.gif .
You need 1 night to explore Gion area. Some places like Gion Shirakawa - Shirakawa canal (night view with lantern lights), Shijo Avenue, Minamiza Theater, Hanami-koji Street or Gion Corner.
Feel free to top up ur itinerary~ whistling.gif

Shinjuku Sunroute hotel, Keio plaza are recommended. Pricy .. sweat.gif
You may try Shinjuku Prince Hotel, Kodoya hotel.. reasonable price. Shinjuku prince hotel stay for 3 nights got cheaper, high floor recommended, you can have the miniature scene of tokyo skytree and city view. Tons of restaurant and convenient shop and departmental store nearby. Main point, just cross one street to kabukicho!! icon_rolleyes.gif wub.gif

After googl'ing, that's a pretty good idea! Not too sure if I have the time though cos only allocated like 2n in Kyoto. Maybe extend to 3n and cut off Tokyo since I spent my entire last trip to Japan in Tokyo ... hmm.gif

and is reserved-seat is a must?

don't want to get a Japan Rail Pass as it is only a one-way trip...
