I have no qualifications to teach you, but based on my weekly experiences, it will demand a much higher discipline on maintaining fitness level and physique. One of the reason I retired from the other strokes was to maximise calories burned per hour as it is my main cardio.

If you have determination, you should be able to self-learn. Master the freestyle then do a few dolphin kicks for every freestyle laps, it's hard to explain in words but try to read up on undulation, that is what your body should be doing endlessly and effortlessly. GL

BTW, do you live at that condo or do you sneak in to utilise the pool?
*
My sister lives in the condo. I go there to swim after work for about an hour, hour and a half or so.

For the record, I'm a very heavy male(130+ kg) with a highly dodgy left knee that has been twice operated on due to ACL and meniscus injury, hence why I swim a lot. The only form of exercise I'm allowed to due to the knee as my recovery from surgery is not good. Used to play futsal and badminton a lot, every week.

Have been reading up and watching videos of butterfly stroke tutorials. Not able to get it yet though. The others I think I'm doing fine. Learnt freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke off of videos. Body probably not as straight as they should be but I do OK. Obviously I'm not able to do laps non stop as I'm unfit but I probably swim accumulating to around 1 km or so per session, mixture of freestyle and breaststroke these days. The pool is about 40m in length and about 1 meter, a metre or half so deep and the max I can probably go now is a return lap non stop. Like I said, I'm unfit.

You're right, so will probably gain some fitness first before attempting to learn the butterfly stroke again.

After three months of swimming about 3~4 times a week, started with only 350M each session... Now i can finally swim at least 700M per session without stopping! I am using Garmin Swim to track. Really happy that I have made this a habit, can feel my body starting to tone and I sleep better, feel more confident about myself generally! I don't get headaches/migraine so often anymore! Problem is I haven't really lost weight cause never control my diet. LOL! But most of my clothes and pants are starting to become really loose.

For those who are about to start swimming, take that first step. It's gonna be hard in the beginning, your heart is going to pump so fast like you are going to die and your muslces will be sore. But it will be worth it in the end, just keep doing it and don't give up! smile.gif
*
Yeah, before I knew swimming, I thought I'd never love it...

Now I have learned how to swim... I just like it better than hiking and running biggrin.gif ... not so much about to keep fit, but rather it's an exercise that you won't get tired and feel more refreshed after. Didn't need a gadget to track, just swim until the life guard kick me out of the pool rolleyes.gif or the crowd push me out of the lanes vmad.gif
Well, the main problem, for people not living in condo, swimming pool is just hard to come by, not every community gets a pool and, many times have to get miles away out for a pool and hope that it is not crowded shakehead.gif ...

That's really good! Congratulations!
Though swimming actually makes me tired because I push myself faster and faster. It's a good sports, low impact and all.

You just have too much energy to spend after work or you aiming for competitive swimming? laugh.gif
Yup, low impact overall, and helps easing back problem. Exception is butterfly stroke, which can be stressful on back especially for those with back issues like myself blush.gif ...

The problem with condo pools though is there's usually quite a number of people who come there just to lepak or splash around. Fine if they're doing it at the side, but those splashing about in the middle, disturbs people who are doing laps. It becomes and obstacle source instead trying to swerve and avoid them. Just had one last Monday when I was doing laps there was this bunch of Pinoy ladies not doing anything but just standing in the middle and chatting. It's very irritating.

I would expect them to get the hint after I was going back and forth trying to swerve and avoid them. They got it after the 5th lap I think.

Sorry about my typo, it's actually reverse, I wrote reserve instead. Nope. i didn't just start learning to swim, my parents made me and my siblings learns swimming since very young. And in the primary school i used to swim for districts, so i used to train like everyday and then my parents made me stop during puberty and i started gaining weight like crazy. Since i have shifted to the condo, also in the food industry I am working in, and not forgetting the slowing metabolism, I decided to pick it up again. rclxms.gif One good thing about my condo is that the management controls the cholorine amount in the pool, they put lesser than those public pools.

Well, I purposely kicked hard, got my legs out of the water. They only got the hint after 5 or 6 laps. 1 off incident maybe. Pool was clear when I went yesterday. Here's hoping it's clear today as well.

Should just go with butterfly stroke, torpedo style if they thought you were just kicking water and playing with them...
Bet no gal would just stand there watching an "impending collision" unless she was intending to let you jump on her!

Haha! the competitive swimmer was a long long long long loooooooooooong time ago. After I stopped, i immediately gained so much weight and very hard to even catch up to that speed anymore. And now it's freaking hard to lose those fats, have to rely on diet really. 30% exercise and 70% diet.

That's the reason I stay in the condo in the first place. the facilities are all in place. xD icon_rolleyes.gif

Can you guys do egg beater kicks in the pool without relying on your hand, I can do a basic egg beater kicks but have to rely on my hand to help me balance and keep me afloat. Also my egg beater kicks cannot last more than 1 min before my legs are completely exhausted. Any recommendation on help to improving my kicks?

Swimming pool is really hard to come by in Malaysia, because Malaysia is not a swimming friendly country, same goes to cycling etc. Unlike in the USA and Australia - Swimming pools. Swimming pools everywhere!

Condo pools usually are not rectangular pool, because most of them are designed for people to play water, hence it is not preferred for swimming laps. Serious swimmers usually will look for rectangular pool or at least Olympic-length pool. Finding an Olympic-size condo pool is like dredge for a needle in the sea. Go to public pool instead. But bear in mind most of them are not Olympic-size pool, they are just Olympic-length.

Mind to tell which pool? Lol those peeps retarded or what? How can they didn't get it when you're already swimming for the fifth lap.
