well, one of those smart swim watches is enough to blow a hole on the wallet...

Garena said it right, if you're consistently swimming a few times a week, there's no way you won't improve.

the same goes for any other activity that you do in life.

but if you're looking to shave off the milliseconds for competitive swimming, get someone to time it for you (cheaper and maybe free)

Yea true, all the swimming watches are really expensive. The cheapest option is only Pebble watches that can link to Swim.com.

After three months of swimming about 3~4 times a week, started with only 350M each session... Now i can finally swim at least 700M per session without stopping! I am using Garmin Swim to track. Really happy that I have made this a habit, can feel my body starting to tone and I sleep better, feel more confident about myself generally! I don't get headaches/migraine so often anymore! Problem is I haven't really lost weight cause never control my diet. LOL! But most of my clothes and pants are starting to become really loose.

For those who are about to start swimming, take that first step. It's gonna be hard in the beginning, your heart is going to pump so fast like you are going to die and your muslces will be sore. But it will be worth it in the end, just keep doing it and don't give up! smile.gif

well done, wish I had the budget for a garmin watch,

if you aim to lose weight, you need to measure according to calories per hour. A one hour swimming session would burn less than an hour of jogging depending on the stroke. Also, you lose metabolism much quicker after you stop swimming as compared to jogging because the water cools you faster.

http://www.active.com/triathlon/articles/h...s-swimming-burn

700m would take a around 15mins+ on endurance or less if you're into speeding. It is said that catabolic state doesn't happen until at least hitting into the 20th minute during the cardio session. I generally keep a ratio of 2:1 for myself, means 2 hrs of non-stop swimming is equivalent to 1 hr of non-stop jog, but I am a full time flier so it should be more in theory.

Thanks! rclxms.gif

I swim after my work so usually I don't have time to swim for one full two hours. LOL I usually get so tired and won't be able to wake up the next day even if I sleep early that day. Perhaps I need to train further. But I like swimming instead of jogging because I fell down in high school and busted my knees. Now I couldn't really do land sports without feeling slight pain on one of my knees so swimming is my to-go exercise. I did read about all the articles swimming vs jogging. While jogging burns more calories, I like the fact swimming tones your entire body instead of just one part of it.

may i ask what brand of swimming attire is long lasting?

i bought ogival shorts type tights but some fabric become damaged/ expand  after use 3 to 4 months.. cant use anymore
i prefer the shorts/tights type with another piece of underwear inside.... so far hard to get.  ogival had it but now cant find

I am using Speedo. They are more expensive. I use it everyday and it doesn't go out of shape. I am using the "endurance" series which is supposed to last, according to their USPs. But I am not sure about male's swim wear because I am not very sure if you are aware that I am not male. blink.gif

Garmin Swim can get from here, in the garage sales, just search for it. It's about RM600 by the way.

Yeah, before I knew swimming, I thought I'd never love it...

Now I have learned how to swim... I just like it better than hiking and running biggrin.gif ... not so much about to keep fit, but rather it's an exercise that you won't get tired and feel more refreshed after. Didn't need a gadget to track, just swim until the life guard kick me out of the pool  rolleyes.gif  or the crowd push me out of the lanes  vmad.gif
Well, the main problem, for people not living in condo, swimming pool is just hard to come by, not every community gets a pool and, many times have to get miles away out for a pool and hope that it is not crowded shakehead.gif ...
*
That's really good! Congratulations!
Though swimming actually makes me tired because I push myself faster and faster. It's a good sports, low impact and all.

You just have too much energy to spend after work or you aiming for competitive swimming?  laugh.gif
Yup, low impact overall, and helps easing back problem. Exception is butterfly stroke, which can be stressful on back especially for those with back issues like myself blush.gif ...
*
Not really, more like i like it when my heart is pumping! rclxms.gif
But i am just really glad that I pick up swimming again after for so long. I am trying to reserve the aging effect by exercising instead of relying on chemicals! blush.gif

Oh wow, haha, I was reading so fast that I thought you wrote reverse the aging effect   tongue.gif ! Hehe, well don't forget the chemicals in the pool though  rolleyes.gif
So you didn't just start learning swimming... Speak of trying to go back into swimming, I just learned the closest pool from my place is closed for reason I can't seem to find doh.gif  bummer yawn.gif
You could just free-style like newbie as you get closer to them, get rough with the pool water... the splash, the noise, hope they find that entertaining thumbup.gif
*
Sorry about my typo, it's actually reverse, I wrote reserve instead. Nope. i didn't just start learning to swim, my parents made me and my siblings learns swimming since very young. And in the primary school i used to swim for districts, so i used to train like everyday and then my parents made me stop during puberty and i started gaining weight like crazy. Since i have shifted to the condo, also in the food industry I am working in, and not forgetting the slowing metabolism, I decided to pick it up again. rclxms.gif One good thing about my condo is that the management controls the cholorine amount in the pool, they put lesser than those public pools.

shocking.gif So ya used to b a competitive swimmer!!? I see!
Food industry... you meant you test eating food?? blink.gif Oh well, now that explain why...
how nice having pool in condo, no hassle of parking, traveling, fees and chlorine OD... Guess I shall just swim in my water tank...  blush.gif
Should just go with butterfly stroke, torpedo style if they thought you were just kicking water and playing with them...
Bet no gal would just stand there watching an "impending collision" unless she was intending to let you jump on her!
*
Haha! the competitive swimmer was a long long long long loooooooooooong time ago. After I stopped, i immediately gained so much weight and very hard to even catch up to that speed anymore. And now it's freaking hard to lose those fats, have to rely on diet really. 30% exercise and 70% diet.

That's the reason I stay in the condo in the first place. the facilities are all in place. xD icon_rolleyes.gif

Well that's... pretty looong time lol  biggrin.gif
Never too late, you pretty much got the right idea, diet does play a huge part in weight control.
For me, if exercise doesn't cut it, control the diet, and vice versa, has to be balance to see the outcome.
And taking food before bed time and gobble up lots of food in one meal are also bad eating habits that may lead to undesired weight gain... or so i believe rolleyes.gif
And utmost, the lesson learned from you, do not stop swimming for too long, LOL biggrin.gif
Damn, I gotta find a way to get back into swimming  blush.gif

To be honest, when I weigh myself, the scale doesn't seem to drop, but the changes on the body is very obvious, like it's more toned. Also, when you wear your clothes, that one you will know cause things are looser. Most importantly is that you will feel healthier and more confident. That feeling is awesome!

I have started taking coconut oil, two spoons in the morning. Apparently it helps to fight abdominal fats which is very hard for me to lose them because I am a woman and apparently we are genetically designed to have more fats on that area to protect babies. hmm.gif That's according to a few articles i read online and also my colleague who works as part time trainer. So she recommended me trying coconut oil. Besides that, it really has lotsa other benefits!

Diet is so hard to control honestly, haha! I couldn't stop my craving but I did cut off rice from my diet. And also I eat late, because after swimming, it's already about 8PM. And also I work in fast food industry! Haha!

I am glad that you all are starting to work out again! Keep us updated of your progress! rclxms.gif

IMHO, as long as your weight is correct based on BMI you're fine, don't focus on the numbers, but what's inside those numbers, muscle or fat.

I place muscle building as one of the important keys. Yes, women should do some weight training too. Your muscles will burn all your extra calories even while you're watching drama. Then top it off with core exercises and cardio. Diet is to control your calories intake so you get into caloric deficit. But diet isn't so easy as you'll end up hungry and might even get more sickness if not properly planned.
what kind of a national sports centre closes at 5pm D:
*
I don't like weight training cause I know I won't keep up with it. HAha! I used to want to jog to lose weight but after a few days I gave up. Then I realized it's because I hate the activity so much. I love swimming and it's easier to make it a habit than jogging. I think swimming also builds muscles, no? It's a whole body workout and as far as I am concerned, weight training or not, I am swimming about 4KM per week, it might sound very less to some people but at least I am not a couch potato! And I am increasing the distance slowly. Used to be able to do 2KM per week only icon_rolleyes.gif
