That much differences compared to D700's NEF? Haven't tried opening one yet... Oh dear, more money to be spent? sad.gif I was thinking to upgrade next year instead with the new socket from Intel. Intel always changing socket making me unable to upgrade  vmad.gif
I stopped chasing socket technology because everytime you buy a new system, it's already obsolete. Best of the best is always Intel but it's expensive. Thinking of AMD or just settle for Sandy Bridge and if I can get away with something in the middle of the pack but faster than what I have now, it should be good.

I'm currently using Capture NX2. The 64 bit version is suppose to be fast but opening and minor processing (exposure, WB etc) D800 NEFs on the Capture NX2 is damn slow. I have 6GB memory on my overclocked Q6600 and I see that it already uses 5GB plus when I process one D800 NEF. doh.gif

SSD would help but they way I see it, Capture NX2 does not trash the hardisk so much after a while. Most of the time, it's waiting for the quad core processor to finish processing.

Time for new desktop tongue.gif
Actually anything sandy bridge i5/i7 is powerful enough already.
just take 8gb ram because LR/PS eat a lot of page memory.
I think 16GB memory should be the way to go. You sure i5/i7 enough? Overclock the 2600k? Is there any website specifically talking about PCs for post processing?

D90 work pretty well in 24-70
Sure it does. But will it be wide enough since now 24mm will be 36mm FOV?

I think the OP must answer why he chose the 24-70 in the first place...

Pleae give more info of your plans and thoughts, your statement is too generalised for good constructive advise from the seniors here

why do you need an FX body?
why do you need a 24-70mm?

lens first - IMHO it would have been pressumed that you have already mastered the current lenses you have, FX lens are larger, heavier, and very likely have greater resolutions, that will probably enhance any mistakes(  is this a correct term to use?) you have on your current body. it will take some tme getting use to the newer lens, and when you are ready for the body upgrade, you will only need to worry about the functions of the newer camera and not the technique part.....i dunno if that makes any sense, any care to explain it in other words?

body first - you already have a basic FX lens you plan to use, your future upgrade will be a higher spec lens, and you need time to get used to the camera functions and layout - if you shoot alot of sports n high speed stuff, you will need to know the camera like the back of your palms......

in short, learn to walk before you run.
tho there are also pros out there using DX, all comes down to what your needs are...not wants...

I moved from i5 750 to i7 2600K ... and very happy with it when editing RAWs in LR3/4. Everything that you tweaked responded right away. biggrin.gif
Though i5 750 was pretty good, the more efficient i7 2600K does it better and faster. The only wait/delay is when exporting bunch of pics to .jpg after PP.
