QUOTE(jchue73 @ Apr 5 2012, 03:57 PM)
I stopped chasing socket technology because everytime you buy a new system, it's already obsolete. Best of the best is always Intel but it's expensive. Thinking of AMD or just settle for Sandy Bridge and if I can get away with something in the middle of the pack but faster than what I have now, it should be good.

I'm currently using Capture NX2. The 64 bit version is suppose to be fast but opening and minor processing (exposure, WB etc) D800 NEFs on the Capture NX2 is damn slow. I have 6GB memory on my overclocked Q6600 and I see that it already uses 5GB plus when I process one D800 NEF.  doh.gif

SSD would help but they way I see it, Capture NX2 does not trash the hardisk so much after a while. Most of the time, it's waiting for the quad core processor to finish processing.
I think 16GB memory should be the way to go. You sure i5/i7 enough? Overclock the 2600k? Is there any website specifically talking about PCs for post processing?
Sure it does. But will it be wide enough since now 24mm will be 36mm FOV?

*
I moved from i5 750 to i7 2600K ... and very happy with it when editing RAWs in LR3/4. Everything that you tweaked responded right away. biggrin.gif
Though i5 750 was pretty good, the more efficient i7 2600K does it better and faster. The only wait/delay is when exporting bunch of pics to .jpg after PP.

My very 1st attempt at macro. Must say that it was very challenging. Plus I had a withdrawal syndrome (post-macro sickness  rclxub.gif ). Maybe macro is not suitable for me  blush.gif

looks good for first try. Been wanting to do super macro shots of insects like this one too. Whats ur setup like? ...Thanks.

I tried that a couple of times ..but kinda frustrated ...
Summore got other laptop/computers to do it also.
Hope to do it the proper way and have all other colors, contrast, brightness, etc tuned properly also.

goldfries asked me, "Why do you want to calibrate your monitor? Only you yourself are seeing if you do not do prints. Others will have to calibrate if they want to enjoy the same image quality as you do."
*

Understand that, but thing is I do product photography* which requires me to get the right color as close as possible. Even one product have many tones with slight degradation.
Frankly, I'm not a pro. But other than that, I value actual looking color on my monitors. It is more of a satisfaction while pleasing the customers to see.

You mean you dont print the photos? O_o
*
QUOTE(patienceGNR @ Apr 12 2012, 07:59 PM)
I don't.
*

I would still prefer to have the colors balanced even though the person seeing it says it's just another photo or doesn't print photos often. If I do print or pass the pic to someone, he/she can print it with great colors, not spoilt by my 'wrong' color profile on my monitor during my PP. Right?

QUOTE(jchue73 @ Apr 12 2012, 08:51 PM)
Buy a reasonable one should be fine. Even though obsolete, my Eyeone Display 2 still serves me well. Got it in 2007.
I find that reply funny. It's like asking why do you need perfect vision for your eyes... It's because I like to see things correctly !
Got such a thing as 18-100?  biggrin.gif
*

Can borrow? ..Haha. Joking. tongue.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(patienceGNR @ Apr 12 2012, 08:55 PM)
You like to see things correctly, but yourself only. Others will probably just view it as "just another photo".
*

At least I know whoever sees my photo, the color is already up to my expectation and always consistent. It is up to the person to get his monitor to the right color. That could also means he may not care about color that much I guess.
It is the same thing as driving a car which is dirty+smudgy. Some prefer their car to be gleaming shine everyday but others don't care as much with so many scratch & dings around it. Should be up to the person right?

QUOTE(hkenh @ Apr 12 2012, 08:55 PM)
hahaha yeah man, another similar analogy why bother setting WB since only you see the photo.  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
*

True. I want to get the best WB I can tweak during PP. If the monitor I'm working with has a blue/green/pink tint then when I change to another pc/laptop ...the color will be off due to WB is off ....all bcoz the LCD is off-color.

i using d5100 and have few choices of lenses to choose from my workplace. i more into potrait, landscape and food photography so i want to know which ONE of it suits them all

    12-24 mm DX zoom
    14-24 mm full frame zoom
    17-35 mm full frame zoom
    14 mm full frame fixed
    18-200 mm full frame
    18 mm manual
    70-200 mm full frame
    80-200 mm full frame
    80-400 mm full frame
*
QUOTE(ojtee @ Apr 17 2012, 10:17 PM)
if you can choose 2 lens it would be
12-24mm
18-200mm

if just 1 lens, then 12-24mm, then crop the pictures since you have the 16mp sensor

but my suggestion would be the 16-85mm, you wont regret it
*
QUOTE(hihihehe @ Apr 18 2012, 06:32 AM)
ya only 1 lens. 12-24 mm? will have a look with that 1.
like others said, i wont get a close up photo with 70-200?
*
I love my 16-85 though it is not a fast lens like 17-55 f2.8 or even the monster 70-200 f2.8.
It still works wonders for me. A pretty good all rounder even though it can't go to 200mm like 18-200. smile.gif
I'll just fund myself for 55-300 or 70-300 in the future, enough dy.

How much is ur budget hihihehe? Can get anything with no max budget ah? tongue.gif
To be frank, for product/food photog, 18-55 is pretty good. perhaps u can add in stuff like flash, macro ring flash, macro/close up filter, remote trigger, flash trigger, tripod and others. I mean, I would rather have something like below and add in other helpful stuffs.

As for lens (I dunno ur budget ..) :
18-55 (u alrdy got this right) + 55-300 = RM ~1-1.2k
16-85 + 55-300 = RM ~2.2-2.4k (hv to buy two lenses)
17-55 f2.8 + 50 f1.8G = RM costs a bomb on the 17-55 and hv to buy 2 lenses though .. tongue.gif
18-55 + Tamron SP AF90 = RM1.3k
or u can get 35 f1.8G also if u want. Well, my suggestion above doesnt include a cool wide angle lens yet though... laugh.gif

Added on April 18, 2012, 9:58 amforgot to add, 18-105mm! That's pretty gud for a start too!

Haha dude, you're really into macro of insects and stuff? Have you gone out jungle trekking to look for insects etc before? Got a friend who's into this, pretty hardcore at it to boot.

Everdying, where was this? It's a footsal tourney if I'm not wrong?
*
Hehe. Macro, insects, small items, products ... that's what I enjoy doing when I didn't go outing with friends. (rarely go outing due to time constraints also cry.gif )
Anyhow, it is easier coz can do it just at home & own time. tongue.gif
Really inspired by those hardcore macro+insects photogs with awesome lenses ... can zoom in so much and with a lots of details intact ...
I'm just using cheapo setup + macro lens : d3100 + tamron SP AF90 + raynox filter ... taking macro+super macro is really damn tricky and tedious ...need patience.

All my pics are from raw... overtime, they eat up my disk space so fast! ... luckily it is just D3100 and not D800.... haha. (one way of saying i cant afford a D800? tongue.gif)
But still i prefer raw as the ability to tweak many things is good!

amduser,
grey card or white balance card can buy for cheap.... no worries.

Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di Macro
Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5 G ED VR

which one should i go for my D7000?
*
What do u plan to use it for? I hv tamron sp af 90 on my d3100. It is very sharp for macro but the AF motor inside is not as fast as those prime lens or any nikkor lenses la. You can feel it is a bit slower. tongue.gif

I dunno much about the 85mm micro though ..would love to test it one day... or I might as well fund for upgrade to 105mm micro in the future ..hehehe. (evil laugh)

Still ok maa. This kind of grain still can be easily removed in LR or PS if done right.
Pardon my noobness/beginner-ness, but this is what I did in LR :

Before :
user posted image

After :
user posted image

In LR under Noise Reduction, i just increase luminance and color and nothing else.... I try to retain some grains a lil' bit. If done straight from your RAW after doing the sharpening, I think should be better. tongue.gif

*oh well, I'm also stuck with 1600/3200 only of my D3100... 3200 i use only when urgent or really needed. Had to use 1600 max most of the time only. sad.gif
Wish I could get D5100/D7000 sensor and push to 3200/6400 when I need it (yeah D700/D800 would be nice but ...but ... but ....*sigh* huhu...)

when I'm doing product shots, I use 200-400 also, coz the light alrdy bright and I'm always on tripod.

QUOTE(Andy214 @ May 3 2012, 02:47 PM)
In terms of price, but there's many difference in what it offers.

Nikon's 105 have IF, Nano Coating, Much Faster and Silent Focusing, Excellent build, VR2, etc.
*
True. Though I love tamron sp90's sharpness, sometimes (maybe 20-30% of the time?) it is hard to take your macro pic bcoz no VR if you simply handheld ur cam for a quick shot. Need to put on tripod if u want better stability and sharpness. I'm not saying tamron sp90 is bad, just saying that the 105 micro have VR, IF, Nano & AF-S ... makes it better than have nothing at all like tamron sp90. I can't say much coz I only have experience with sp90 so far. tongue.gif
I would love to move to 105mm micro one day, but not urgent lah ... hehe.

QUOTE(jchue73 @ May 3 2012, 03:22 PM)
Who says? Tamron is good bang for the buck but if you compare just performance alone, the Nikkor is almost always the better lens.
*

Agree!
