best is 2006/07 car... whereby the COE is the lowest.. so depreciation is the lowest... get a car where the COE is low and the OMV is high... therefore u use till COE habis, overall depreciation is low

i thought of that too, actually you see those 2nd hand cars with 4-5 years left of COE can get for cheap one. But then maintenance costs + parking costs + all that ... calculate liao then decide occasional taxi ride still WAY cheaper biggrin.gif

Maintenance, go get it done in JB, then you will be able to lower it. Parking is a killer in SG. Nevertheless, if you work in places like those industrial park, maybe a car is really an essential tool.

For new subsidised HDB units, the owner cannot rent out the entire unit for 5 years after getting keys. Look at this:

Great thank you for the link. Didn't think to look deeper into HDB ownership as I'm not qualified.

^ any special reason renting the wholeplace ? u coming with your spouse or something?
ever thought if things are not what u expected here ?
lately i seen few fella who travel occasionaly on plane /bus also go back already
just a thought why not rent a room and see the situation  rolleyes.gif

No, it's a personal choice and I'm staying alone. I like my privacy and space, and just am not comfortable to share with other people. You can say I'm not a social type. And I would really hate having to deal with people issues after work.

QUOTE(jasonkwk @ Feb 24 2012, 01:26 PM)
it is legal to rent the whole unit by foreigner, just make sure the owner send your information to MOM that all.
*

Got it. It's just there are so few ads for renting out whole units than rooms for rent that cause me to wonder...

By the way, I'm still considering the offer. I read somewhere that says Engineering role aren't as "hot" in Singapore, compared to those in finance & banking sector, which means I just won't be paid as well, plus have concern on career growth. That and the really small accommodation space is sort of a put off for me. By small I mean below 600sqft (assuming I can find the small units). So overall my first choice is not Singapore.

u can go rent a flat in johor lor.. rm300 nia and commute or rent a studio lor in sg.. dont know if u can find cheap ones..

nope, u can rent.. rental u can stay alone.. no prob

I apologize, looks like I missed 2 earlier posts.
I've considered and rejected that option. Coz I would occasionally work till very late, and I've no mind to travel through custom at midnight or at odd hours in the morning. I mean, the thought of that would made me think oh I need to go back by XXX everday, and thus put a limit on the time I have at my disposal to deal with my work. And much of my work cannot be done from home. That plus the everyday time wasted on traffic is almost as bad as asking me to share a place.

QUOTE(yiivei @ Feb 24 2012, 08:49 AM)
If you are not keen to share a place, then i see no point for you to rent the whole HDB unit.

Try to look for studio unit. Last, i check the price is hovering ard 1.5k to 1.8k.
*

Yeah I did. But considering the small size of a studio unit (400sqft or less), I would much rather pay more for a comfortable long term stay. It's really a personal thing again, but as I'd spend most of my time at home (when I'm not working), I imagine a small space will start to feel cramp after a couple of months, and I am looking for long term stay after all. 1 or 2 rooms unit would be ideal, gives you a sense of space and still allow partitioning to different areas.

looking at this statement, i would say staying in JB is not that after all. you can ask some fellow forumer here. when we go out for a TCSS session,
sometimes i reach home earlier than some of them. like 1 guy stay in Bedok, we finish drinking coffee at starbucks (Orchard) around 11:45pm. he go and take his bus while i go and ride my bike home, i can reach home around 12:20am, and he is still in the bus. Another thing is i stay quite far away from the causeway. if i stay next to the causeway, I can reach home in 20-25 mins time from Orchard during non peak hours. the nightmare is only during normal office hours. for JB-SG, its from 5am-10am. SG-JB its 5:30pm-9:30pm. If your working time does not fall into that hour, it won't take u more than 1 hour traveling time even u stay in Johor Jaya (East side of JB) to Tuas Area (West coast of Singapore).

from a Malaysian rider point of view, (I ride in KL and also SG), Malaysian driver are more courteous when it comes to driving style.
and Malaysian also are more alert when driving. And in Traffic Jams, Malaysian will leave a small gap to let bikers go through.
Singapore drivers don't give a damn about it. so sometimes you might encounter on certain places, Bikes need to jam together with them.
I think the main reason is also because of the riders. because in malaysia, if u block the bikers road, only 2 things will happen, either ur car side mirror got smash or they will horn u like mad. in Singapore, all the bikers are too sissy to do that. only part of the roads like BKE and SLE, the drivers will scare the motorcyclist coz they know most of them are Malaysians and they will give way to us (Like a boss smile.gif).

Public transport is good for saving money for the first few years of working. Many non-KL ppl working in KL couldn't save. Ppl see KL brats who lives in parent's house like how you see Sg young ppl driving papa's Toyota Wish to work.

I would rather ride a bicycle then riding motorcycle in Sg. Sg drivers are nuts.

sg drivers are not nuts, just that their cars are more powerful...

The most effective but expensive method is to do it the old fashion way. Come over to Singapore, and then extend your visa to long term.

I am not too sure about how to extend my visa to long term while I'm looking for a job in SG.
I was told I have to exit and enter again every 2 weeks, or no?

Having some interview scheduled next month...so I will just go there straight regardless of interview outcome and continue job hunting until I get one.

Please enlighten me on this. Thanks nod.gif
