FAQs

Employments:
Job opportunities are still good. Those with higher education level/experience stand a better chance and command a higher starting pay. Good command of English in resume writing or interview is a huge benefit. The following are the list of available online job sites:
1. Jobstreet
2. Contact Singapore
3. Jobs Central
4. JobsDB
5. eFinancialCareers.sg

The most effective but expensive method is to do it the old fashion way. Come over to Singapore, and then extend your visa to long term. During your stay in SG, flip through the recruitment newspaper and apply for your job through the company itself. This way, you're almost guaranteed to be in front of the queue from those who applied through Jobstreet. You can also attend their interviews without any delays while you're here in SG.

Various employment passes are available to enable you to work in Singapore depending on your skills and pay. Employers will help you in the application of passes. Your job is however pending on the approval of the pass. Information of types of passes are available through MOM's website. Do not worry of what passes you get. Eventually all will allow you to work in SG. Some do fuss about it due to "status" and extra benefits (i.e: credit card and contract phone applications). Just be hardworking and move up the passes or apply directly for PR few years down the road.

All you need to know about PR application and requirements are available here: http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=151&secid=150

Please take note that ex Singaporean PRs who renounced their status without serving the National Service will have their job and employment pass applications greatly degraded.

For an idea of current payscales (finance), here's Morgan McKinley's Singapore Salary Guide 2011.
Robert Walters Salary Survey 2011

CPF and Taxes:
Malaysians working under employment/work passes are exempted from paying CPF. Singapore PRs have to contribute to CPF according to the rates found here: http://mycpf.cpf.gov.sg/Members/Gen-Info/C...es/ContriRa.htm

As for the complicated tax returns, i'll just provide the website so everyone can search under their own categories. http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page01.aspx?id=88

Accomodations:
HDBs everywhere! Prime and new areas should cost around SGD600 and above per room (with or without utilities). You can still find small & cramped sub-SGD400 per room in remote or rundown areas. If you can afford the luxury, apartments and condos are the way to go. SGD1000 onwards per room is the current market price. Normally comes with swimming pool and gym facilities.

Below are some useful sites:

http://singapore.roomsdb.net/
http://easyroommate.com.sg/ (looks more like a dating site )
http://www.sg-house.com/
http://www.propertyguru.com.sg/

Transportation:
No need to describe any further. Been compared and discussed too many times between SG and MY. In SG, you can be anywhere in the island just by using public transport. The all too convenient EZ link card can be used in both MRT and bus (even McD yeah!). For places out of reach, taxi is the answer. Don't worry, you won't get touted with expensive fares. They are a bunch of professionals with accurate meters. First entry onto cab is SGD2.80 or SGD3.00. The rest runs on meter plus any surcharges from tolls, airport surcharge or stopping period. If you are travelling in group of 4, taxi is the cheaper option on certain routes compared to others.

Coach: http://www.journeymalaysia.com/ptasingapore.htm
SBS bus maps: http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/iris3/nextbus.aspx
MRT maps: http://www.smrt.com.sg/trains/images/tn_networkmap_big.jpg
Directions: http://gothere.sg/maps or http://maps.google.com.sg/

Malaysians can drive in cars/bikes to work in SG. For SG PRs, you have to drive singapore registered vehicles. More info here: http://www.lta.gov.sg/motoring_matters/ind...oring_guide.htm

Expenses:
This is very subjective depending on the spending power of different individuals. But here are the basic breakdowns on rough estimates:
1. Accoms SGD600 (varies)
2. Food SGD500 (varies)
3. Transport SGD60
4. Entertainment SGD300 (strip it off if wanna save)
5. Shopping $$$

for SG car

Custom Only:  (RM16 + (S$1.2 x 2.4) ) x 22 = RM415.36 or S$173.07

estimated 70,000 cars/day so it is RM1,120,000 each day for the work of maintaining 8km highway. More than enough to buy a N35 GTR each day.
*
most of the time, if Msia increase the toll, SG will increase it to the same value as well. like the current rate.

causeway $1.20 = RM2.90
2nd link, $3.20= RM7.50

so if msia increase the rate to $6.20, i scare SG will charge the equivalent sum as well.

Hi all, I need some help from you guys.

I get the in principle approval letter in PDF format from my future employer. My future employer staff told me that i just need bring along this documents when enter to Singapore.

Is that really enough?
1)That means i just need bring my passport and this IPA enough already?
2)After that i need to go MOM get my EP? How long i can get the EP? 1 day?

Please advise what others things I need to take note/get or process.

Many Thanks
*
The ipa is just to show ur EP is approve base on ur qualifications and u got no criminal records. U still need to fill up white card when coming into sg. U also need to go through a medical check up. If u fail the medical check, u cannot get ur EP as well

Anyway i'm at HONDA.

Isn't it Riverwalk near Clarke Quay?
*
S pass and WP is at Tanjong Pagar, for EP, it will be at River Walk

if u are getting a P2 or P1 pass, sometimes u are exempted from the Medical test.
most of the time, they only check for HIV and also lungs decease. if u don't have issue on that, then shouldn't be an issue.

Time taken to prepare the pass would be like this.

u go take a medical chit (like an authorization letter) from your company, u need to go to the clinic to do the test.
results will be ready in about a week time, then u need to go to the WPSC or EPSC to do ur thumb print.
after thumb print, u will get ur EP/SP/WP card in 4 business days.

again a simple reminder... no chit chat la... later mod ban the thread again...

i agree with u, with the field i am in now, getting a job is never a problem. i got a friend call me just now say his friend is jobless also.
went for 5 interview and didn't get any reply. looks like it really depends on the industry you are working in.

my field has never been and issue to get a job, but it won't bring you to a good career or good pay.

for those staying in jb travelling everyday to singapore, with EP, do they need to pay any VEP for their malaysian vehicle?
*
VEP is applicable to all foreign vehicle. in fact, the reason VEP is implemented is to control those working in Singapore but stay in JB
to don't drive to work. to avoid the traffic congestion in SG.

QUOTE(tgrrr @ Feb 25 2012, 10:28 PM)
Great thank you for the link. Didn't think to look deeper into HDB ownership as I'm not qualified.

No, it's a personal choice and I'm staying alone. I like my privacy and space, and just am not comfortable to share with other people. You can say I'm not a social type. And I would really hate having to deal with people issues after work.

Got it. It's just there are so few ads for renting out whole units than rooms for rent that cause me to wonder...

By the way, I'm still considering the offer. I read somewhere that says Engineering role aren't as "hot" in Singapore, compared to those in finance & banking sector, which means I just won't be paid as well, plus have concern on career growth. That and the really small accommodation space is sort of a put off for me. By small I mean below 600sqft (assuming I can find the small units). So overall my first choice is not Singapore.

Added on February 25, 2012, 10:42 pmI apologize, looks like I missed 2 earlier posts.
I've considered and rejected that option. Coz I would occasionally work till very late, and I've no mind to travel through custom at midnight or at odd hours in the morning. I mean, the thought of that would made me think oh I need to go back by XXX everday, and thus put a limit on the time I have at my disposal to deal with my work. And much of my work cannot be done from home. That plus the everyday time wasted on traffic is almost as bad as asking me to share a place.

Yeah I did. But considering the small size of a studio unit (400sqft or less), I would much rather pay more for a comfortable long term stay. It's really a personal thing again, but as I'd spend most of my time at home (when I'm not working), I imagine a small space will start to feel cramp after a couple of months, and I am looking for long term stay after all. 1 or 2 rooms unit would be ideal, gives you a sense of space and still allow partitioning to different areas.
*
looking at this statement, i would say staying in JB is not that after all. you can ask some fellow forumer here. when we go out for a TCSS session,
sometimes i reach home earlier than some of them. like 1 guy stay in Bedok, we finish drinking coffee at starbucks (Orchard) around 11:45pm. he go and take his bus while i go and ride my bike home, i can reach home around 12:20am, and he is still in the bus. Another thing is i stay quite far away from the causeway. if i stay next to the causeway, I can reach home in 20-25 mins time from Orchard during non peak hours. the nightmare is only during normal office hours. for JB-SG, its from 5am-10am. SG-JB its 5:30pm-9:30pm. If your working time does not fall into that hour, it won't take u more than 1 hour traveling time even u stay in Johor Jaya (East side of JB) to Tuas Area (West coast of Singapore).

QUOTE(PepsiCo @ Feb 25 2012, 11:08 PM)
could it be any worst then Malaysia style driving?
*
from a Malaysian rider point of view, (I ride in KL and also SG), Malaysian driver are more courteous when it comes to driving style.
and Malaysian also are more alert when driving. And in Traffic Jams, Malaysian will leave a small gap to let bikers go through.
Singapore drivers don't give a damn about it. so sometimes you might encounter on certain places, Bikes need to jam together with them.
I think the main reason is also because of the riders. because in malaysia, if u block the bikers road, only 2 things will happen, either ur car side mirror got smash or they will horn u like mad. in Singapore, all the bikers are too sissy to do that. only part of the roads like BKE and SLE, the drivers will scare the motorcyclist coz they know most of them are Malaysians and they will give way to us (Like a boss smile.gif).

1 month ah? where can I check to clarify?
Cos I heard from my sister  who is already holding a PR for long time...so the info might be wrong
*
The rules for Malaysian is, For every 90 days, you can stay in Singapore for 60 days. I actually called up ICA and asked them about this.
So u can stay in Singapore for 30 days, then exit and enter again for 30 days, if u exit and want to enter again, they won't let u in until u left Singapore for a month. For my case, Coz i stay in JB, so i can in out everyday, but they will calculate how many days I have entered, so they won't give you more than 60 days for every 90 days. that's what ICA told me. For your case, its easier for them to manage.
For cases like me its a little bit hard because they need to calculate the stamps 1 by 1 and i can say most of the time they don't calculate and just let u go through.

every weekday = 5 day a week. so 1 month 22 days, 3 months also 66 days only.
slightly over the quota. like i say, some of them lazy to calculate if there are too many chop..
but if u stay in Singapore for 1 month then go out and come in, confirm u kena caught 1.

*
the answer is NO. because to withdraw epf, u need to show them a few documents, ur S&P, loan offer letter.
they will look at the location of the house you purchase as well and ask u to do the withdrawal from the nearest branch.
Like my case, i tried to withdraw from KL branch but my project is in JB. They ask me to go JB.
I ask them WHY? they say because they are not very clear with the project in JB. so need to go to the nearest branch.

Guys,

Which area would be a more "strategic" place to stay if I am not sure where my future work location is going to be?

This might not be the best idea..but I'm thinking to get a room and stay there until I find a job.
Heard from my SG friend says that 6 months is the minimum I can go with

Some people suggested me to stay in JB temporarily...just don't want to take the risk after hearing so many weird crimes going on there.  shakehead.gif  shakehead.gif
*
tell them u are the king's disciple, who dare to touch you.. tongue.gif
actually, JB is not that bad la. seriously, most of the crimes reported are related to the underworld...
if u don't get involve with them, they won't disturb you. and they will treat you nicely as well since those ppl operate business as well.
and without a WP, EP or SP, u can't legally rent a room in SG. so it won't work... situation might get worst if SG gov finds out u are
staying here illegally. If u have criminal record in SG, i would say 99% ur EP, WP or SP application will get rejected.

as long as u lock your vehicle properly, there is nothing that need to be scare. also depends on the location...

QUOTE(singaporestreet @ Mar 5 2012, 02:09 AM)
guys plzz help.. there are several questions i'd like to ask..

1 - living in jb or singapore? (which one is cheaper)
2 - if in jb, if my company is at queen street, should i live at gelang patah or jb city?
3 - motorcycles vs car commuting (do i need to pay toll at custom?)
4 - car vs motorcycles (time to destination.. is it really motorcycle faster?)
5 - i tried by bus it took around 1.5 hours to reach my office from jb sentral..

plzz..plzzz... help..sorry just noobie..
*
ok, just answer you base on my opinion because i live in both place for around a year...

1. for my case, i would say SG is cheaper, 1 thing is because i got a very cheap rent at $400 per month include pub and internet (friend's relative house). when i stay in JB, i actually brought my KL car and also a bike to commute to work. installment already eat up almost RM1k. if include the RM300 rental, RM60 for electric + water and RM140 for internet, definitely more than that $400. 1 more thing is when u stay in JB, u always feels taht spending in RM is cheap and tend to buy buy and buy more stuff coz u think its cheap, that leads u to spend more $$. that is for my case... maybe you can control your self well, then u can really safe a lot.

2. Queen street is in the town area. If i were you, i would choose to stay in JB town. Coz using the causeway, u can save a lot on toll.

3. the toll rates are like this.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

4.I only use causeway, so i can give u the rough estimation for causeway only. If ride bike, from Causeway, u need to queue average 20-30 mins at kastam. and from Kastam to queen street around 25-30 mins (my riding style). If drive car, sometimes u are lucky, kastam only takes u 10 mins. but prepare to Jam at SLE and CTE. if u are heading to town, not to forget the crazy ERP during office hours. i went to Suntec once, on bike, it cost me almost $5, so if drive car, prepare to pay double what the bikers are paying and prepare to Jam at CTE/PIE long long time. I currently works in Tampines, from JB sentral to Tampines, it took me less than 1 hour on bike. if drive car, if no traffic jam, would be around there as well. maybe 10-15 mins more. but if jam, prepare to late more than 1 hour. for your case, i think bike will be faster by 15-20 mins. (base on my experience)

5. should be around that time, but not much freedom if u take bus, cannot go home late, cannot go hang out with friends and most importantly, u cannot enjoy a better life while staying in JB. if that's the case, why not just stay in SG if u ask me. Unless u really wanna hardcore safe money, then u can go ahead, but i can confirm that u won't feel happy because u will have 0 entertainment and when ur colleagues or friends ask u out, u can't join...

never use motorcycle. I got a friend died from accident. Life is not cheap. Just an advice.  icon_idea.gif

depends on how alert is the rider, if u are experience enough, shouldn't be an issue. i ride for more than 7 years edi. never been knock by a car before, reason being i horn them when i feel they wanna change lane... need to alert others because bikers need to know that cars have blind spot, don't care whether they wanna change lane or not, horn 1st. if the driver beh song, he only can horn back. he won't knock u down purposely 1. that can safe u from a lot of accident.

QUOTE(ch_teo @ Mar 5 2012, 09:25 PM)
sweat.gif agreed.
have seen a few cases at tuas second link bridge in the early morning within 2 years...
*
last week there is a case at TPE, today another case as well. but i think is those bikers ride too fast between cars and the car suddenly change lane knock them down 1. that's why i say back to my 1st point, horn the cars when u see there is movement on their wheel. horn them as well if they stick too near to the middle lane. coz if a fight really break out, no worries, u sure win coz if the car driver really dare to come and whack u, the bikers behind u definitely go and bash them gao gao... bikers are very unite in another words doesn't car what race u are.... real 1 Malaysia spirit.....

1 day, i think more than 50k bikes entering and only that few accident. not to mention the bike that got into accident might be a Singaporean with a Singapore bike. so not a big deal as long as you are careful enough.

put it this way, i don't know the time you depart from SG, so don't know how long it takes.

cost ? Petrol around RM50-RM60 (depends on how hard i press the accelerator)
time ? between 2 hours to 2 hours 30 mins (toll to toll) if constant 140kph without much lorry blocking, 2 hours 15 mins is enough for 140.
speed ? around 140kph, sometimes i will drive till 150-170 depends on my needs.
car type ? Perodua myvi .
