Hi Guys,

Lucky I found this thread, im considering moving to SG since my company have a big centre there. Internal move.

I never been to SG before so im scared kena lelong.

So I planned to move to SG with my family (wife + 1 son + 1 daughter).

Question is:

1. Which is better for family man like me, renting house in SG or JB?
2. What is the price rate for renting apartment in SG?
3. What is comfortable salary to survive in SG plus family?

Hope all sifuu here can share their experience with me..

thanks

Your kids schooling? Getting a place in nearby school is one thing, acting like a beggar to get a seat in primary school is another.

Child Care cost is around 1k per kid without subsidy. A sg car will be better but you still can bring kids to event and park with local transport, you just Need to spend more time on road or waiting.

your wife take care of the kids and cook own meal? You need >=5k to live basic for a foreigner family.

Rental 2k+, food 1k, bills 400, misc 1k+, That's it. If your company provide housing or some allowance then the cost will be lower.

Just chipping in to give some additional info. Moving from KL to SG, you have to give up certain ... comforts. Ringgit-to-Dollar, rm2.5k/mth you can have a nice comfy gated condo with swimming pool, and drive everywhere in a local car. sgd2.5k/mth you can only get a <1000sqft hdb (i.e. public housing) flat with no facilities, and have to take public transport everywhere.

In addition, the first-month relocation & settling-in money you need to cough up can be quite an eye-opener - when moving in to my current place (rented) I had to cough up over $12k for agent fee, first month rental, 2 months security deposit and furnishing. If your company doesn't cover your relocation then you have to further factor in the costs of packing and shipping all the contents of your KL place to SG as well.

Other than housing & owning a car though, everything else is less than a sgd1:myr1 ratio. quick & dirty example, marutama ramen in MY is like rm20 a bowl; in SG it's $14. Also, just commenting on river's $5k estimation, that's about the average basic monthly expenses for myself + my fiancee without kids - and not including all those "miscellaneous" stuff that every month also sure got - things like birthdays, needing to fly back to M'sia for whatever purpose, holidays, shopping, savings, etc etc.

Gelang Patah got direct bus to Jurong East Interchange. You could basically work your timing from there

crossing the causeway is not much of a problem if you using 2nd link. The only headache is the expressway, especially AYE & PIE, always jammed on weekdays peak hours. You have to hit the expressway latest by 7am to avoid unnecessary delay.

to be frank, if ur office is at payar lebar, i think its better to travel by causeway. cheaper and also the jam is more a less focus on the causeway it self. so wen u jam at the causeway, u can enjoy ur newspaper and breakfast.
if u going by 2nd link, the PIE rush hour jam is a night mare. is comparable to KL's Cheras - midvalley highway jam. 1 word, crazy. i tried riding a bike on that, wan cilok also hard. not only that, u need to factor in the number of ERP you will be paying if using PIE. if u travel by causeway, u can use SLE>CTE>bradell>bartley road... less jam unless got accident. also no ERP or only 1 ERP at CTE if not mistaken.

Actually you will need to try it out yourself during the rush hour to determine what time is the best to leave house, etc. For example in Woodlands causeway, sometimes it will take 50min and sometime, 20min would do. So I would always estimate it to be an hour. From there to the location of your parking, well, it will depend on the road condition. So if there is an accident, it will take a bit longer. If your company work hour is rather flexible, then you can see what is the best time to go and get home.

Also, do listen to the radio daily during the peak hour and see if the strech of road you are taking will have lots of accidents or not. For me, the bottleneck is on the PIE/KJE exit and Mandai road exit. Dunno why always got accident there. Also, if it rains, maybe put another one hour to your journey?

Unless ur pay is $10k and above. If not, I would say it is almost impossible to survive if u want to stay inside sg. Renting a 2+1 room hdb cost u almost $2k nowadays. Might as well spend rm2k rent a corner lot terrace house for ur wife and child in jb and u travel daily. Actually, rm1.2-1.5k can get u a intermediate unit near kastam at jb. Just that u need to work harder wake up earlier to travel.

Also if you are going to stay in JB and drive in, make sure you have a contigency plan to factor in whatever EDL/Singapore will charge when it takes effect.

Horizon Hill? If you speak to the Sales person there, they will give you the impression that it is like a little SG there.

It's really hard to plan for such a long distance, lot's of unpredictable circumstances, especially accident and rain. Easily 50+km per trip and involved 2 expressway. Fastest route i think would be AYE --> KPE.

for 5k = 2.5k per person/mth and that can be easily more than one whole month salary of a lot of malaysians cari makan here. My landlord's wife, his sister, brother-in-law and sis-in-law, all drawing between 1.5k - 2.5k salary per month only. I saw it when they do the online tax declaration.....So, this doesnt mean this people cannot enjoy as all also having the latest iphone..... laugh.gif

Well, it's relative lor ... compared to my colleagues here in my department my rank / pay is peanuts only. My boss (young 40's) sends his kids to dunno what private international school at $3k/month for each kid rclxub.gif

Besides, compared to people in this forum I'm probably in the oldest 10% bracket, so every year makan few %'age increment also would have higher pay than the rest of you young guys biggrin.gif
