guys n gals, i have a BIG problem...

it seems that the sg company hired me is exploiting foreigners, knowing we need a job, suddenly during confirmation ask me to sign a new contract... very strange terms that requires a person to work on wkends n if no work on wkends the hrs not clocked will be 'owed' to the company... its not my 1st job so nvr heard of such thing.... no epf paid n no transport claimable even though travel to work for the extra hrs... end up if u resign they can easily make u stay for another 1 mth or so due to the 'hrs' u 'owe' them... it has happened to others.... n i hav been warned by my colleagues

BIG Question is, if i resign now, will i lose my EP n get deported back to Msia? If so, then mayb i should jz put my head down n sign the agreement after that quietly look for another job?

wat would u do? negotiated for hrs edi but the boss insist the terms...

My advice, dun sign it. Just resign, u will get 30 days stay, and from there u can extend another month. So in total, u got 2 months stay, and within tat 2 months, i am sure u can get a better job.

Eh, ask you guys, where is best place to buy electronics and electrical appliances (for house)?

Specifically, I need to buy a TV (looking at 40" size), vacuum cleaner, rice cooker, blender, juicer, espresso machine (maybe), iron. Don't have a car here but I can get my gf to drive over for the weekend if it's more convenient. Any suggestions? Courts or Harvey Norman?

For white goods, I usually go to Carrefour. If you have POSB's Everyday mastercard, you get 5% rebate to spend on your next purchase. And every other month or so, they will have a 10% weekend promotion for the card. 10% and the hypermarket prices to begin with, is pretty cheap.

Otherwise, I usually go to Courts or Fairprice Xtra (hypermart), namely because they're in AMK. Harvey Norman's okay as well but not convenient for me. Just a while back, I picked up a 42" LG plasma tv display set for $499 from Courts (in Orchard though).

How does it work? Get a quote, order and then they deliver?

I usually stick to the hypermarts because of the no questions asked return policy if you return it within a week or two. Just bring it back to Carrefour or Xtra and they'll give you a replacement or a refund immediately. Electricals these days are cheap enough to buy & throw. If it works in the first 2 weeks, it'll probably work the next couple of years. After that, if it breaks, just replace it.

For heavier stuff like white goods, warranties are almost useless in Singapore without an on-site warranty. It's simply too big/heavy to transport or too cheap to warrant the transport costs to/from the service center. Courts will come back to pick up the defective item within 2 weeks (or at least that's what they told me for the TV).

Parisilk might be good for small stuff like handphones, laptops and accessories though.

My family+relatives who have been using them for the past 20 odd years. Like you mentioned, get quote and they will deliver. The older generation in my family would just give them a call and ask them to deliver what they (Parisilk) think is best. Most of us call to compare prices of certain and they have so far never failed to beat the price we saw elsewhere.

As far as I could remember, my family have never purchased small items like handphones, laptops (usually change upon renewal of contract) or camera from them. Mostly TVs and other home appliances. The most recent purchase was a Sharp smart tv, about $100 cheaper than the cheapest that I have surveyed, free delivery and I have the option to just pass them a cheque, easy.

I would recommend them to anyone and Nee Soon branch is the one that I deal with.

Both.

As is the risk exposure.

Property is to fight inflation. Capital gain on top of that is a bonus. FD is standard yield. It's to balance risk. Shares is 5-8% dividend yield mostly. Capital gain on top of that is a bonus.

I think the risk will be zero if you invest in a good company.
Wow, I think property in Sg overpriced?
If you have S$1 million, better retire while doing stock trading or still working in S$3k salary?

Tell that to investors in Lehman Brothers, Enron, Citibank, AIG, Fanny & Freddy, employees of Arthur Anderson. Those names were as blue as a blue chip could get.

In relation to the property markets you have access to, which one is not 'overpriced' vs inflation and the value of holding cash? It's a matter of which asset do you believe will best protect the current value of your existing wealth in the future.

Working for a $3K salary because you need it to put food on the table, and working for a S$3K salary because you are bored - have a different set of considerations. Don't try to answer the question before you have accumulated S$1MM.
