what is wrong with VISTA actually?
i am very frustrated here;

i wan copy a 500mb file into a pendrive and it took 20mins still havent finish. I tried it in WinXp and it was 5x faster....5 mins only. It seems to be scanning something? 'calculating time remaining'.

This is causing by Vista and security software such as Norton Internet Security and Mcafee Security Center. Do you have any security software running?

hey vista users.

have a question here.

i'm planning to install a dual-booting vista+xp.

the question(s) that i have:

1. Which one will be considered as the main OS?
2. Can i just run the programs that i have ALREADY installed in the XP partition in Vista? ( eg. games, image processing etc etc)
3. If i can, how?
4. Does vista has any performance caveats? Lag, memory hog etc etc.

Going to hoard the drivers before attempting to install Vista. Also gonna wait the V-Sifu ( lol?) in LY.net to answer my questions first too.

thx

for those who said Vista is using too much memory:

basically, it is a good thing because Vista is utilizing all the memory without wasting it.

Agreed. As for windows XP, if the memory been used to its full, we will see the effect of its.....PC become S.L.O.W

Who say Windows XP memory been used to its full!?
I been using Windows XP for many year till I change to Windows Vista and Windows XP consume less memory than Windows Vista.
You need to experience yourself before making the assumptions.
Your PC slow because you didn't do a well maintainance on it. smile.gif

XP does not fully utilise all of it's memory, while Vista does. That's why you see that it looks as if Vista is using a lot more memory. It's a better management system than XP

1. When you boot your PC, the boot manager will ask you to select which OS you want to boot (XP / Vista). If you do nothing, Vista will be automatically selected.

2. Nope. I've tried that, it won't work. You need to install it again on Vista.

4. I noticed that on Vista, my memory usage is around 700MB - 800MB. Running apps are Yahoo Messenger, Firefox, Windows Media Player 11, anti-virus & firewall running at background. Running the same apps on XP took much lesser RAM. Probably Vista consume higher amount because Vista's Super Fetch is doing its work. I didn't notice any lag / slowdown though.

vista makes use of its priorities in background and foreground tasks. I remember back in XP, if i were to add in MSN, YM, utorrent, Norton, etc in the startup program list, I ll have to wait all of them completely loaded into the system tray then only i can start using, else, the pc will become sluggish.

But in vista, while waiting for the antivirus, MSN, YM loading to the system tray, you still can start another program at relatively faster speed, and have a much more responsive system compare to XP.

plus everytime i wan move files to recycle bin, install tiny puny programs in VISTA...a confirmation screen will come out.

I have just install it few minutes ago, and guess what, the driver really sux, i can say it's almost the same as the BETA driver+some interface changes while installing? Can't believe my eyes that this is what they call released driver with no software working, EAX settings are not available, no EQ settings as well, what the hell are they doing? This will be my last creative card as their driver really sux like hell vmad.gif

sigh, Vista seems to have taken a feature away from foobar where you can directly drop zip files into foobar and play directly... I wonder if there is a fix for this =\

Just to add more info on vista setups.
installed vista ultimate in one of my rigs recently.

Spec
AMD X2 3800+
Asus M2NPV-VM
1Gb (512x2) DDR667

1st glance

Was just curious on vista and wanna mess with it a little and decided to upgrade. The installation took a much longer time compared to xp. The first thing i realised before anything is the increased speed of startup in vista, much faster compared to my xp(which i thought just because its a fresh format and yes, its still faster than XP after i installed all of my usual applications). The new looks on the themes and sounds themes, is very refreshing and i really love all the vista fade outs.

Setting up

The control panel gets a little messy for me, and its quite different to xp, not alot, but takes a few moment of browsing before getting used to it. I disabled the UAC , it gets pretty annoying at times, especially after a fresh format where we would usually start installing stuff. It took quite some time for me to get the desktop the way i want it to be, but by the time im done with it, the whole control panel is a breeze as well, it isnt as complicated as it appears, quite similar to XP. Did lots of google getting more info on vista.

Installation of basic driver is a breeze, it came with driver support for most of the hardware and i dont really have to separately install drivers for the devices except for the nvidia graphic drivers and my Phillips Aurillium which unfortunately, the sound agent 2 doesnt support vista, so id have to stick with the USB generic driver for that. they even have driver for my "cheapo" vimicro webcam.

Performance

Its very obvious that vista startup with lots of system resourse used, mine start up with 400-500Mb on startup, and i was expecting my system to slow down alot due to hearing many forumers here saying that 1Gb is not good enough for vista etc etc. And even with that amount of memory used up... everything run unexpectedly, perfectly smooth, too smooth for nearly 50% of system resource used up, if its on my ol Xp, when my ram usage is about 50%+ system slowdown would be noticeable. I also notice a significant speed increase in the windows explorer.

As for graphics, im still using my 6150 onboard graphics (1680x1050), also, hearing from forumers regarding the need of good GC to run vista... i was astounded by what the onboard graphics can do. There isnt noteable lag and everything is smooth of course, aero is used and all shadowing/transparency effect is enabled. I can even run some light games (frozen throne/audition/CS/emulations) with quite good fps under low to medium settings. My usual programs running are msn, utorrent, winamp, rklauncher,DAP and avast. No problems running other apps or even games even with my memory usage is up to 7-800Mb.

Overall, im loving the new vista and hasnt encoutered any problems... yet. Just a little disappointed that i cant install the Phillips Sound Agent 2, but the Sound Agent 2 features are easily available.

Just sharing my new vista experience here.

Repost:

New Vista User Log. From a XP user

Purchased a note book with VISTA Premium, 2 Weeks ago.

Preliminary Outlook.

Damn, Loading up VISTA is damn slow, and this is supposed to be a newer machine even with 1gb ram. Apart from that the VISTA interface looks good. AERO and all the smooth graphics need some time of getting used to. Transferring from a XP to VISTA for general computing is not at all hard. Everything seems same to XP. biggrin.gif

Transferring data

Being a office notebook, transferring data from old to new computer is inevitable. The setting up to the office network which most computer either at XP or 98 is ok. Net work compatibility if fine. Locating computer from the network and transferring files is as what is suppose to do. biggrin.gif

First hurdle. The driver for communal Printer is not vista ready. Looking form the website, there is a driver for vista but not official release. Need to manual install and set up. For normal printer is fine but network printer/fax/scanner all in one is a bit risky business. Finally got the printer installed manually from the manufactut rer technician on the phone. The driver used is not official, temporary measure taken until official vista driver is out which is supposed to take a few more month. hmm.gif

Next testing and installing all the normal everyday software normally used.

1) Outlook. -OK
2) ANTIVIRUS -OK
3) MS OFFICE -OK
4) Custom dos based program which uses full screen on DOS. -NOT OK sad.gif
5) Networked program -OK
6) 3party utility program -NOT OK sad.gif
7) Firefox. -Problematic when installing plug in

Some comment here. Some programs that had been quoted vista compactable is have bugs. Huge Bugs. Next. Upon uninstalling. Traces of the program still left in start menu and program files folder. And the program in this folder cannot be deleted. Funny. vmad.gif

Finally decided, decided to try out all the program that Microsoft can offer instead of the alternative. mad.gif

>>>>>>> doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif <<<<<<< fEELIGN NOW??

Update:

Disable the UAC ( user account control ) most program run better
I think microsoft use the UAC to disable non microsoft programs,,,,

People... pleas disable UAC icon_idea.gif

Microsoft DID NOT introduced UAC for disabling program. Open Office ran fine, Opera ran fine. UAC even tho it's a bit b****y, protects you from malicious software that wants to install programs without you knowing it (kinda like your mum when she says never do drugs). Thus I found your statement stupid

allright,,, UAC dosen't allow firefox to install plugin. dosent allow primo pft to write file. etc......

maybe not purposely, but do make life hard for not so computer literate users.......

i still keep with my statement

" Stupid UAC "

i think it would not pose too much of a danger to normal user, if he wants to disable UAC. As long as he has updated AV, Windows Defender, firewall, that should do the job quite well in safeguarding the pc

but dont use IE7 when u turn off UAC, no UAC = unprotected IE7
