Want to ask you guys whether my PC is powerful enough to support Windows Vista with Aero & Flip3D.

My system spec:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ AM2
1 GB DDR800 RAM
GeForce 6150 Intergrated GPU (16MB shared from system's RAM, but can set up to 256MB).

I think the weakest link here is the GPU. Can I run Vista (with Aero & Flip3D) with acceptable performance (programming, web-surfing, watching movies) or should I get a discrete GPU? unsure.gif

Tried installing Vista just now, no Aero for me, it's disabled in the menu. Don't really care, but what's disappointing is that I can't use any resolution higher than 1280x1024. I'm using 19" Samsung Widescreen LCD, native resolution is 1440x900. Using lower resolution will just cause the image to be streched to fill the screen and it's just doh.gif

I've made some search, and it's seems that nVidia's Vista driver currently doesn't support that resolution. It's not because I'm using integrated GPU, I've read that 8800GTX users is also facing the same problem. doh.gif

lol...it is because Vista RC2 and RTM is a beta..and not a full release...i'm using 8800GTS..and i've got no problem with that....tongue.gif..and vista not support some drivers and software....2 bad...but i like the visual....pretty cool hah?...dont you think?...smile.gif
*
Yup, pretty cool, and the performance on my PC is better than what I expected. Too bad I can't run it on my LCD's native resolution. I guess I'll for nVidia's driver support.

Oops. Didn't try that yesterday, connection was pretty bad because of the international link problem. Will try that later.

QUOTE(insane_people06 @ Dec 28 2006, 11:41 AM)
try 2 update your driver dude!...nVidia 8 series actually can suppot Vista.... unsure.gif

From what I read at nVidia's forum, some 8800 users are having the same problem.

Just installed 97.52 Forceware driver and now I can select 1440x900 resolution. rclxms.gif

I wonder why Nvidia doesn't have this driver at their site. I have to download it from Guru3D website.

When I first installed Vista, I can't play any video file. I got "not enough memory" error. After I increased the GPU's shared memory from 16MB to 128MB, I no longer get that error. I can now use Aero too. thumbup.gif

This is my laptop specs :
512MB DDR2 533MHZ
ATI X300 64MB
1.6MHZ

I don have a 1gb ram nor a 128mb graphic card is this the reason i cant find the aero glass effect? is there anyway to enable it?
*
I don't think so. I'm using GeForce 6150, and was only sharing 16MB of memory into the GPU. I can't enable Aero effect, it's not in the selection. After I increased the shared memory to 128MB, then only I can select Aero.

That's what I've been saying. You need 128MB of VRAM to use Aero.

Is it possible to change Vista's taskbar color? I'm using Aero and I can't find any setting to change the taskbar's color.

Anybody here using Windows Vista & Sony Ericsson's phone, can you get the Sony Ericsson PC Suite to work?

I've tried Vista RTM version before, and can't get the PC Suite to install. IIRC, it prompt an error that I need Windows XP to install the program. I've tried running the installer in XP Compatibility mode, but it still won't work.

Since Vista final version has been released (and Sony Ericsson probably has updated the PC Suite to support Vista), anybody can get the PC Suite to work now? I checked at Sony Ericsson's site and it mention that the OS requirements are Windows 2000 SP3/SP4, XP SP1/SP2 (Professional and Home). It didn't mention Vista at all. sad.gif

SE is currently working on next version of pc suite that will be vista compatible, and is due to release in 2nd half of 2007

2nd Half of 2007? doh.gif

I just got my copy of Vista. Microsoft is launching Windows Vista at my campus (MMU Cyberjaya) today and tomorrow. Every staff & student is eligible for a copy of Vista Business Edition thumbup.gif

I want to install it, but I know that I can't use SE's PC Suite if I install Vista. Is it possible to dual-boot XP & Vista if I have only 1 HDD? My roommate said that I need at least 2 HDD to dual-boot. sweat.gif

Yes, you can dual boot in a same HDD but for installing vista you need a clean hard disk(empty).

Empty HDD? I have a 160GB HDD with 2 partition, C & D. So this means that only the C partition have to be empty or both of em?

Which one should I install first? XP or Vista?

yeah mmu students have free full copy of vista business premium, same as those u can download online, only diff is they burn for us in a dvd

Not to mention that you get legal CD-Key. thumbup.gif

QUOTE(wsho71 @ Feb 27 2007, 05:00 PM)
You means you get the Vista Business Edition for free?
*
Yup, full version. I'm not sure whether it's retail or OEM version. They're not giving Vistas in Retail boxes for sure. To get the Vista, we must bring your Student ID and a piece of blank DVD. Each student will be given unique cd-key. According to the MS rep, the cd-key is valid till 2012.

The process to get the Vista is tedious. You have to queue up at any booth, complete a task (answer some questions, watch their demo, etc), and they'll give you 1 stamp. There are 7 booths, but you only need to collect 5 stamps, and then you can claim your copy of Vista.

I queued for 3 1/2 hours before I got mine. sweat.gif

Must both partition be empty? Currently I have 2 partitions, 1 which I use to install XP, and the 2nd partition is where I store all my songs/movie/pictures/assignments. Can I install Vista in the 2nd partition without reformatting the partition itself?

one of them must empty. and it is recommanded to have not less than 40GB for the particular partition.

mzaidi,
Not necessary both of partition empty. Previously, I already have install winxp in drive C:, and some file and folder in drive D:. I have no problem installing vista in the drive D:, and all files and folder previously in drive D: is intact.
*
Another question. If I install my XP at partition C, and then install Vista on partition D, will all my program shortcuts on XP's Start menu automatically be imported to Vista Start's menu?

Vista Enterprise will only be available through Microsoft Software Assurance. It will not be available through retail or OEM.

I never heard of Vista Pro before, and I'm sure that it didn't exist.

I have 2 HDD partition on my PC, C & D. I installed Windows XP on partition C, and Windows Vista on partition D.

After using Vista for a week and testing all my favorite apps to make sure they work on Vista, I want to uninstall XP and use Vista solely, but I can't find any option to uninstall Vista (either from Vista itself or from XP). The only solution I can think of is to delete the Vista's folder in partition D, tried that, and it won't work. I can't delete that folder at all. I was prompted with this error:

user posted image

Tried deleting the folder in Safe mode and even using Unlocker and I got the same error.

Is there any way I can uninstall Vista / delete Vista folder without reformatting partition D? I have lots of other files in that partition and there's no easy way for me to backup them other than burning them all in DVDs which will cost me lots of time & money.

I can't use my Thumb drive for Ready Boost. I got an error message that the thumb drive's performance is not enough for Ready Boost.

I did some reading online, and found out that I need a thumb drive with at least 2.5MB/s read & write. I benchmarked my thumb drive using HD Tach, and found that it's average speed 7.3MB/s and burst speed is 7.7MB/s is which is above the minimum read / write requirement.

It's a 1GB Pen Drive thumb drive with around 902MB free space.

How can I enable ReadyBoost?

edit:

I may know why. My thumb drive is in FAT format. I just read that ReadyBoost need FAT32 / NTFS formated drive. doh.gif

QUOTE(seaotter @ Mar 11 2007, 06:29 AM)
the question(s) that i have:

1. Which one will be considered as the main OS?
2. Can i just run the programs that i have ALREADY installed in the XP partition in Vista? ( eg. games, image processing etc etc)
3. If i can, how?
4. Does vista has any performance caveats? Lag, memory hog etc etc.

Going to hoard the drivers before attempting to install Vista. Also gonna wait the V-Sifu ( lol?) in LY.net to answer my questions first too.

thx
*
1. When you boot your PC, the boot manager will ask you to select which OS you want to boot (XP / Vista). If you do nothing, Vista will be automatically selected.

2. Nope. I've tried that, it won't work. You need to install it again on Vista.

4. I noticed that on Vista, my memory usage is around 700MB - 800MB. Running apps are Yahoo Messenger, Firefox, Windows Media Player 11, anti-virus & firewall running at background. Running the same apps on XP took much lesser RAM. Probably Vista consume higher amount because Vista's Super Fetch is doing its work. I didn't notice any lag / slowdown though.

Anyone with a similar specs as my PC can tell how is the Vista experience ? How much hard disk space does Vista takes for you all ?

After fresh installation, the Windows Folder takes about 7GB. Now it's 8.12GB (probably because of Windows Update / System Restore / Shadow Copy).
