Was just curious on vista and wanna mess with it a little and decided to upgrade. The installation took a much longer time compared to xp. The first thing i realised before anything is the increased speed of startup in vista, much faster compared to my xp(which i thought just because its a fresh format and yes, its still faster than XP after i installed all of my usual applications). The new looks on the themes and sounds themes, is very refreshing and i really love all the vista fade outs.
Setting up
The control panel gets a little messy for me, and its quite different to xp, not alot, but takes a few moment of browsing before getting used to it. I disabled the UAC , it gets pretty annoying at times, especially after a fresh format where we would usually start installing stuff. It took quite some time for me to get the desktop the way i want it to be, but by the time im done with it, the whole control panel is a breeze as well, it isnt as complicated as it appears, quite similar to XP. Did lots of google getting more info on vista.
Installation of basic driver is a breeze, it came with driver support for most of the hardware and i dont really have to separately install drivers for the devices except for the nvidia graphic drivers and my Phillips Aurillium which unfortunately, the sound agent 2 doesnt support vista, so id have to stick with the USB generic driver for that. they even have driver for my "cheapo" vimicro webcam.
Performance
Its very obvious that vista startup with lots of system resourse used, mine start up with 400-500Mb on startup, and i was expecting my system to slow down alot due to hearing many forumers here saying that 1Gb is not good enough for vista etc etc. And even with that amount of memory used up... everything run unexpectedly, perfectly smooth, too smooth for nearly 50% of system resource used up, if its on my ol Xp, when my ram usage is about 50%+ system slowdown would be noticeable. I also notice a significant speed increase in the windows explorer.
As for graphics, im still using my 6150 onboard graphics (1680x1050), also, hearing from forumers regarding the need of good GC to run vista... i was astounded by what the onboard graphics can do. There isnt noteable lag and everything is smooth of course, aero is used and all shadowing/transparency effect is enabled. I can even run some light games (frozen throne/audition/CS/emulations) with quite good fps under low to medium settings. My usual programs running are msn, utorrent, winamp, rklauncher,DAP and avast. No problems running other apps or even games even with my memory usage is up to 7-800Mb.
Overall, im loving the new vista and hasnt encoutered any problems... yet. Just a little disappointed that i cant install the Phillips Sound Agent 2, but the Sound Agent 2 features are easily available.
Just sharing my new vista experience here.
