Differences b/w Desire Z and T-Mobile G2

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Some say the DHD and DZ are using essentially the same processor, but DZ's is underclocked to 800MHz. This is due to them both having identical GPUs (Adreno 205) but difference CPU clockspeed.

Here's a link to a stock 1.34.707.3 Desire Z ROM nandroid backup provided by fellow owner Dixon93
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...80&p=39627992&#

You are advised to ask permission from him to use it. Promise him that you'll not abuse his info (and mean it!).

Thanks again for your kind contributions, Dixon93!!

---------------------------------------

Custom ROMs.

- Custom ROMs are made for HTC Vision. So the same ROM are supposedly safely flash-able on both DZ and G2.

- ALWAYS MAKE A ***NANDROID BACKUP*** BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING. I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS.
It is also recommended you backup a copy of the nandroid backup onto your computer or somewhere safe.

- These ROMs usually come with a custom kernel so overclocking is enabled. You need to separately download an overclocking app (like CPUTuner ot SetCPU) though.

- Battery drain will be apparently increased after flashing a new ROM. Run a power cycle to calibrate the stats. Battery stats wipe not necessary (some say it will increase battery drain even more).

- In experimental builds (eg CM7 nightlies) expect some bugs here and there (like wifi not working, GPS not working, bad reception etc). Do report back to the respective threads on XDA for feedback.

- Follow all instructions by the chef. He ask you to wipe data and dalvik cache, you do it. If got problem after flashing new ROM, clearing data and dalvik cache and reflashing the ROM usually solves the problem.

- For flashing AOSP-Based ROMs on a Desire Z, you will need to flash the keypad fix everytime because only Sense ROMs has the keypad mappings shipping with it.

======= Custom ROMs (Pre-Rooted) =========

1) Cyanogen - CyanogenMod
CyanogenMod is a custom ROM based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It is basically a ROM built straight from the ingredients provided by Google, like how a manufacturer would. It features various optimisations.

- CyanogenMod Stable or Here

- CyanogenMod RC or Here

- CyanogenMod Nightlies or Here

- Google Apps or Here

2) RMK - Virtuous
RMK works with various other devs to port official Sense builds either from ROM dumps or from RUUs.

- Virtuous Sense or here
This build is as close a custom stock Desire Z ROM can be. Built from the latest Desire Z RUU.

- Virtuous Unity or here
This is a Sense 3.0 ROM built from porting the HTC Pyramid RUU.

- Virtuous G-Lite or here
This build is as close a custom stock G2 ROM can be. Built from the latest G2 RUU.

- Virtuous DoubleShot Port (MyTouch 4G Slide) or here
This build is a HTC DoubleShot port.

3) MIUI
MIUI is a custom ROM based on CyanogenMod that is heavily customised by a team of Chinese devs. It resembles the iOS UI in many aspects.

- by MIUI.us or Here
Official port by the MIUI team.

- by OsiMood
Optimised version by Osimood.

I've decided to only include the frequently updated ones. The rest can be found on XDA's G2/DZ Android Development Forum

======== One-time releases =========
These ROMs are one-time releases and will not be updated. They are rooted stock ROMs without modifications, ie shipped applications (bloatware) intact.

- [ROM][7/14/2011] RMK Vision Gingerbread Sense r2 :: 2.42.405.2
Rooted stock Desire Z Gingerbread build 2.42

- [ROM][02/18/11][WWE] Vision Sense 1.82.405.1 Untouched: Rooted/Deodexed
Rooted stock Desire Z Froyo Build 1.82

- [ROM][04/28/11] TMOUS G2 Gingerbread 2.13.531.5 Untouched (from TEST leak)
Rooted stock G2 Gingerbread build 2.13

========= RADIO ==========
Do ample research before attempting to flash radios.

- [RADIO] HTC VISION RADIO's (PC10IMG.zip Update Files & .img files)
- [REF] Coorelation between radio image and libhtc_ril.so
- [PATCH][4/3/11] Radio Interface Layer: Library to Radio Firmware Automatcher

========= SHIPPED ROMS =========
These flash radio, HBOOT, recovery, ROM.

- HTC Vision Shipped ROMs /RUUs

FAQ:

What is root?
http://www.androidcentral.com/rooting-it-me-some-qa

1) Phone Finder on HTCSense.com doesn't work! Anyone can get it to work?
- HTCSense.com is still considered to be 'under construction' at the moment. Please disregard its existence for the time being.

2) Hinge?
- Some say that later builds have a stiffer spring. Some say you'll get used to it. HTC says it's a design intent.

3) Cases and Screen protector?
- Read next post

4) Will this phone be getting an Android 2.3 update?
- Read
http://www.slashgear.com/htc-desire-hd-des...ear+(SlashGear)

5) What is ROM? Nandroid? Flash?
- Read
http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/60...al-rom-faq.html

6) APN?
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1473755&hl=
clear cache for messages and messagesCS if stuff dun work.

7) OMG Boot up so fast!!!
- If you power down your phone, and boot back up after some time, the boot up time is short (~10 secs). This feature is present in new HTC android phones, and is best a hibernate function found on PCs. A full reboot will take about 1-2 minutes (at most), which occurs after you remove the battery. Also if you have performed a full reboot, allow the widgets and stuff to fully load before scrolling around, or not you'll think the phone is lagging.

8) Visionary?
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/easyroot/

9) GPS broke in CM7
- guhl's original thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028405
- Use this the EFS wipe flashable zip from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044992

Known bugs/issues

Software:

1) [RANDOM] Text field move away from sight when tapped to input text and needs to be dragged back into view. (citations needed)

Solution - Drag text field back into view. No known permanent solution yet. Seems to appear on other androids too.

Hardware:

1) [RANDOM]Phone powers down when screen is sleeping and only able to wake after pulling battery. Reported in the following links:

XDA DZ/G2 Forum
Mobile01 Forum (Mandarin)

(aka 睡死 (sleep dead) on mandarin forums, or Sleeping Beauty, as I prefer tongue.gif)

Solution - Return for warranty claim ASAP, if possible request for one-to-one claim.

Additional info:
To test for this issue, just leave the phone on overnight without charging (like charge the phone fully, unplug then leave it overnight). Set an alarm if possible. Use GPS from time to time (like for GPSTest to lock coordinate then close the app).
Easier to test if you can survive with minimal phone usage (so as to maximise battery discharge duration without charging)
My situation was to leave it overnight for 2 nights. By the 2nd night usually sleeping beauty will occur, always before my alarm was supposed to ring.
Recommend observe for 2 weeks.

Update: it seems the percentage of affected units is still relatively low.

2) [GRADUAL] Hinge becomes loose(er) than initially purchased.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread...highlight=hinge

Solution - Manual spring tightening and here's a video of it, and another video of it, magnetic strip application, rubber band

You can purchase the HTC Desire Z from various sources. Below are the common ways users here obtain it:

1) Maxis.
Purchase at RRP without contract, or with one.

2) LYN Sellers @ Garage Sales
Usually sold at lower than RPP.
Sellers sell Ori, SG and AP sets. Prices vary.

3) Import from Singapore
Involves friend/cousin/acquaintance/oneself to purchase one in the city state and bring it over to Malaysia. Usually very attractively priced.

4) Shops in shopping malls
[input needed]

For the T-Mobile G2:

1) LYN Sellers @ Garage Sales
Usually cheaper than DZ. Either US Set or AP (more common). Prices vary.

2) Shops in shopping malls.
Known to offer cut-throat prices, but that was before the G2 and DZ became (more) common.

3) Buy from US.
Currently only with contract. Best method if you live in the US.

RRP for HTC Desire Z is RM2299.

Safe to say AP DZ prices are hovering around RM1.2K at the moment. (only applies to LYN sellers).

Grab the phone quick if you want because its rarity will increase due to the low market demand of the phone, causing distributors taking in less DZ stocks.

Cases and Screen Protectors

- Non-exhaustive list:
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1438160&hl=
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1707245&hl=
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1575290&hl=

- Generally, due to the low demand of the Desire Z locally, SPs and cases for the DZ are hard to come by in shops:

1) The Mines Serdang [info courtesy of qiilans87]
- HTC Official store
- Same floor with TGV
- ~ Rm35, cheaper if know the tricks brows.gif

1) Maxis.
Purchase at RRP without contract, or with one.

Hello ts, regarding the above statement, from my experience, you cant buy it without the contract, or at RRP price. when i bought mine, the maxis person at sunway told me that we cant.

i dont know for sure about other maxis center, but i think it is the same for all.
but we still need to verify this first.

the speaker is quite loud, when play angry birds or listening to mp3 via speaker at max volume, there is distortion of the sound. wish the speaker was better quality

huhu, just the grey coating over the rubber that wear out. the rubber itself is still ok(if it is rubber, felt like rubber). but now it looks like I have been using it for a long time.

tried to take picture of it, but because of the 1.3MP camera on my laptop, the wear could not be noticed. huhuh

well I guess the inner part of the pouch is not soft enough for dz, plus it is a little tight, if not maybe the coating would not wear out.

HTCSense.com is still considered 'under construction'. So for the meantime, disregard it's existence.

i did tried it... and somehow it works for me..
at first i also get phone finder disabled error, but after i sign in few times it works.. and it shows my phone location pretty accurate..
but sadly i had to be on wifi all the time for this to work... else mobile data is too expansive for me

Guys, a short review on otterbox case...

This case is sturdy and rugged. Screen protector is provided and of good quality. The phone is protected with a silicone skin internally and externally by a layer of polycarbonate outer shell. It is thicker a bit, but by a little only. Overall it feel safe as you're holding a non-slip case, sort of like a plastic feeling to it. The phone slides open and close nicely. No hazard at all. A recommended product if you wanna safe-guard your Z well smile.gif

im newbie either.. hopefully i got it correct..

rooting is gaining full user access into the system. well, u will know this well enough if u r a unix/linux user. for example, rooting can turn security off, allow flashing of 3rd party rom (unofficial rom other than htc) bcaz no security mechanism to check on the rom's checksum.

besides, by gaining to root access, u able to use some apps, such as take screenshot (using shootme), or over / underclock your cpu. u can even change kernel to change more flexible overclock range.

corerct if im wrong alright? im new.. sad.gif

Hi, I'm currently a Galaxy S user. I'm loooking for a new phone with trackpad to replace it.
I'm considering blackberry torch, blackberry bold 9780, and desire Z. I need to reply lots of e-mail, and using web-app.

Can the desire z select text in browser/e-mail, using only trackpad (without using touch screen)?

Does desire z have any LED indicator on missed call/email/sms? galaxy s has no LED indicator....i've to turn the screen on to do so........

How's the battery life on desire z with 3g turn on all the way? BB seems to have excellent battery life.....

i cant make it without touching the screen to highlight anything i wan. even with touch the Capacitive touch screen is badly performed. comparing to nail sensitive resistive touch and fingernail touch. arghh, bad. im still learning to use my thumb properly. rclxub.gif

desire z do have LED indicator. my trackpad will blink as well whenever there is notification. so its fine for me.

battery life in BB always pwn thanks to their unique BIS. i couldnt comment much on battery life, data is expensive in where im now. but my wifi is 24/7 on, with coverage throughout my campus, my G2 can hop point to point without DC. i can have my battery life from 8am to 12am.

downside of BB is lacks of application to enhance the system, plus the BIS is so expensive. major people will rather sacrifice all that on BB and get android anyway. but if your email is as important as ur business, then BB is the way i would say.

Why not give miui rom a try? I using it now and I liked it...its much faster compared to sense based rom I used previously like virtouos..but few I messed on sense incd integration and the copy and paste system.. but do worth give miui a try. Sense based rom for me is just too ram hogging.

I won't consider doing extensive typing on a mobile device.

Selecting items using only trackpad would be a bit strenuous coz you'll need to keep swiping down on the trackpad, by then your thumb would've travelled the same distance as with if you just used the screen.

Regarding LED, the stock functions are to show battery low and charging. Apparently 'LED Me Know' doesn't require root for the full function (but needed for other phones). It allows you to customise the LED for many types of notification.

Bar graph is the results of a benchmark. The benchmark is done by using an app called 'Quadrant Standard'.

If you have not rooted or anything, you have stock ROM. Can be found under About Phone -> Software Information.

AFAIK prices b/w G2 and Dz aren't that huge, is it?

Regarding spring tightening:

Not for the faint-hearted. But the spring strength doesn't really bother us (or those who have declared so previously).

LOL soli la long time didn't check price.

Anyway, I think google updated all their downloadable IMEs to the gingerbread style keyboard. So if you want some official gingerbread juice, can try the Google Korean IME or Google Pinyin IME. These 2 IMEs can input english so no worries.

Added on February 13, 2011, 1:12 amGreat news. ROM Manager supports CWM 3.0.0.5 now! Many XDA users reported that froyo ROMs work with 3.0.0.5 too. Now that 3.0.0.5 supports both 2.2 and 2.3 ROMs, I smell CM7 RC coming soon.

The hinge on my DZ unit was pretty good. But have read in other forums people complain their new unit longgar already.

When i read about it i thought these ppl just being anal. I noticed once or twice that the hinge does close when typing while on the bed (holding the phone above u), but didn't bother me that much.

just got my phone back yesterday from hospital. hehe. I'm currently trying out MIUI. Not as impressive as other put it, though it does act very iPhone-y, i.e straight to the point nothing much to tinker coz apps are all at the homescreen already. Need some getting used to, the idea of no app drawer.

When 3.0.0.5 confirm safely can fall back froyo, then I'll be flashing CM7. can't be behind trend... hehe

It seems the factory replaced something called a 'CBU' to fix my DZ's sleeping beauty problem. Do remind me to update on the condition.

DJFooo, in MIUI, you can create a folder, put every app in it, drag and drop it onto the launcher. and it will act as app drawer.

yes of course you can always resort to other launcher. im just pointing out what we can do with MIUI launcher.

what i am saying here is that MIUI is far more usable than what you are stating. explore more and you will be amazed by it.

^ so far anything I need to look out for before converting b/w 2.2 and 2.3? Like app incompatibilities and stuff. CWM 3.0.0.5 safe to switch b/w 2.2 and 2.3 ROMs already, right?

I expected too much from MIUI. Smoothness wasn't as iPhone-y as I liked. GPS was weird as GPS Test never placed me within 30 meters accuracy but Papago worked fine rclxub.gif . Flashed MIUI to proive a point to my friend and now back to familiar ground.

all apps work perfectly and also u can move all apps (option) to sd.. easy to create sd ext.. yup i have the same thing about gps accuracy wif miui.. does not thinking miui is the best rom for android.. most prefer actual android rom..

flash recovery 3.0 is not complicated.. and if u wanna change to recovery 2.x.x just flash recovery in rom manager.. and ur recovery will get back to normal..

but most of the user said they should prefer flash back to 2.x.x recovery if u wanna get back to froyo.. so u must change to 3.x.x if u wanna use gingerbread..

^hrmm new CWM 3.0.0.5 appeared in ROM Manager few days ago, and some XDA members confirmed froyo roms are compatible with it. I got time try and see.

im currently using gingervillain 1.5 with golauncher. pretty satisfied with it coming from virtuous (wanted to see what 2.3 was all about).

Like the easily accessible premade themes that come with golauncher and everything is pretty customisable too

as for quality apps, pretty impressed with google translate and google goggles so far

@qiilans87 or anyone who knows about it for that matter:

OK I just had a question:

Assuming CWM 2.5 and 3.0.0.5 are not intercompatible in terms of flashing ROMs, if a boot loop occurs when I flash CM7 and I did not flash an ENG HBOOT, What can I do if I want to flash back to CWM 2.5?

Oh and another thing, if I just flashed CWM 3 but have not flashed a 2.3 ROM, can I still boot into my old 2.2-based ROM?

Does the nandroid backup also backup the recovery image? As in, if I'm in CWM 3.0, and I restore a nandroid backup that was made in CWM 2.5. After restoring backup, my recovery image is CWM 2.5 or 3.0?

EDIT:

Got my answer already. Nandroid backup does not contain recovery image.

Only the CWM 3.0.0.5 that is downloaded from ROM Manager works in both Froyo and Gingerbread builds.

how come u get those white header in ur phone? u use gingerbread or just launcher? shakehead.gif

@DjFooo

sorry for late reply n congrate u have the solution.. for me dont afraid to try cmw3 in ur phone..
i already bricked my phone with htc boot loop.. the solution already in xda thread "rootin no adb required..."
i just push adb cmw3.img file in phone then done... both cmw3 n cmw2 img file can be push in your phone
and make sure u have root and eng hboot 1st.. otherwise i still dunno how to solve it..
some more example, if u already on cm7 rom and wanted to revert froyo rom just open up ur rom manager in
your phone.. then click "flash clockworld recovery" (make sure have internet in phone) (normal method i think)
then its done.. after u reboot into recovery the recovery will be on cmw2 version.. laugh.gif

for recovery img file push and if u r in bricked or boot loop thinggy just refer to this page..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909714 make sure u have install proper sdk platform
in order to successfully push adb file to ur phone

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847824

haha spunkberry's is a stock G2. As stock as it can be. biggrin.gif

P/S: back with CM6.1.1. Will be flashing CM7 when first stable release of it is released. Free version of TiB sucks the life out of restoring apps. Dun wanna restore the apps everytime i flash a new nightly or RC. Might consider just buying an unlock code. Haha.

If you look closely, spunk's doesn't have a frame around the front speaker, which is a better design IMO coz pulling the notifications down is a PITA with the frame in the way. Now I'm just using the back cover piece and left the screen side naked (with SP of coz).

That one is selling on amazon and ebay for few cents once. Of coz shipping not included but even with shipping is cheaper than the ones LYN sellers are selling. But the promo is over already ATM.

I call it the Vision. biggrin.gif

Seems HTC gave the DHD and Z a lifeline by not pursuing dualcores, hence rendering the DHD and Z's hardware still relevant in HTC's lineup of devices.

HORROR!!!

http://translate.google.fr/translate?js=n&...martphones-htc/

Let's hope this is just a rumor.

Sense 2.1 is the new Sense that goes on top Android 2.3. If Sense 2.1 is not coming, it'll also probably mean Android 2.3 is not coming too.

Glad I learnt to flash my own custom ROMs.

actually i dun really like htc with htc sense.. sense my phone lag.. haha more memory wasted in sense.. yeah glad we now how to flash our rom.. almost everyday i will update my phone with new build (at nightly build i mean).. now i get those RC and tweak the adw launcher.. cut off adw launcher and install with stock gingerbread launcher in nexus S..

if u want to change those launcher so risk it yourself..but its not difficult to do it.. juz flash exactly like ur flash new rom in recovery.

Actually an update from the manufacturer can help the devs a lot in terms of lingering problems. I'm sure a lot of problems in the original Desire's 2.2 custom ROMs were solved when HTC released the Android 2.2 update. The devs could crack the new ROM open and grab the needed codes.

Also meant a lot to non-AOSP chefs coz they need the 2.3 build from HTC to cook their own version (their ROMs were after all built on the RUU frm HTC). So these chefs like Virtuous and Modaco wont get to see android 2.3 until HTC updates it. or they convert to AOSP ROMs.

IMO, android should not update their firmware quickly because they still got many buggy issues with their firmware.. so thats why cyanogen exist come to help them.. so thats why custom rom always better than stock rom.. but still dont get what a waste sense with htc sense..

Nightly builds are built every night. RCs are like a development milestone that the dev thinks is reasonably safe for beta testing.

settings -> manage applications -> running -> *tap app* -> force close.

You don't really need to do it though. Apps close themselves pretty well when you click back until you return to homescreen.

Your hinge. Loose or snappy?

What build number are you on?

@spunk, time flies~

@deslim, no shortcut other than that icon you mentioned.

the stock browser will feel capable for the time being. When it starts to feel incapable, give alternative browsers a try. I recommend Dolphin Mini. You'll never go back to stock again.

If WiFi is giving you problem in the 'correct' (anti-clockwise 90 degree), try rotating clockwise 90 deg and see got difference or not. You won't be able to use the physical KB in this orientation, but it's sort of a workaround. Soon you'll just make do with the weaker wifi signals. Data still goes thru if the signal is weak so no worries.

If by loose you mean 'having slight side-to-side freedom of motion when reciprocating finger fiddling is applied', then yes.

Though I certainly won't call the freedom of motion mentioned 'loose'. Unless yours is a faulty unit.

To commorate deslim's acquisition of a DZ, I have made a public-editable spreadsheet that contains the owners list. Since I want reviews but you guys want an owners list, I hope the small survey that is included can serve as a middle ground.

LYN HTC Vision Owners List

So start adding your names! Anyone with a browser should be able to edit the spreadsheet. (GDocs FTW!)

Tell me if you guys want to add anything.

The list will go on frontpage when it hits 10 entrants.

^actually it's because the 1.72 ROM is currently unrootable.

The PSNeuter procedure functions to change the electronic tag of the 1.72 to 1.31 (or a number smaller than 1.32) so that a ROM.zip (containing build #1.32) update can be performed. The flash will go thru because the phone recognises that 1.32 is newer than 1.31 (which in fact is actually 1.72), and thus bringing the phone to a rootable state, ie a 1.32 ROM. Permaroot attempt is to be performed after this 'update' (update or downgrade depends on how you look at it).

Besides that, new rom introduce more bugs such as missed sms notifications. It annoys me too.

Been using it for 3 months but still loving it ^^ I still don't have the urge to root it. Maybe my requirement is not that high.

Lol, I think the only time I'll start to root is when htc decided not to update the rom anymore. I know trackpad wake sounds convenient, but somehow I've developed the habit of unlock phone using power button even I've off the keyguard. So yea, I don't need trackpad wake anymore laugh.gif

Hey guys I just defined loose hinge as

"For the hinge to qualify as loose, the screen portion has to dangle when the keyboard portion is held at an upside down position. A tight hinge means the screen portion does not dangle and is securely shut."

Kindly do the appropriate test and report back to the form. Thx.

As promised, I have added the link to the owners list to the front page as we can officially say we have ten users now.

A small number we might be, but boy what a sexy phone we have. brows.gif drool.gif rclxms.gif biggrin.gif

New and old users check front page from time to time to read updated information and if possible give feedback.

How do we actually use 3g anyway? I tick d mobile connections, then wat do I do? Do I have to set up d APN? What is d APN anyway, and its importance?

Another ques, can we check our data usage on our phone, or do we have to wait for the bill from our provider?

New user here, so need some guide.. thanks!

APN (access point names) refer to the name of access points which is what you need to use mobile data. It's usually automatically configured when you insert your sim card inside.

once you tick the mobile connections, it should automatically search for an available 3g connection or 2g if there is no 3g signal. You'll know you have 3g if it says 3g or H on the notification bar. it only does this when you're not connected to wifi though

So we do not need to create our own APN? Everytime I on my 3G, the APN section is empty, is it normal?

lol why torture yourself by restraining yourself from using a certain function of a phone when it's not your fault?

Got problem must change. Or not later regret.

Now after i sent to repair it didn't power down once. My phone just survived 16 hours, with the WiFi and GPS on for 10 of those hours, and at least a solid hour of Angry Birds. Hehe. But didn't have time to leave it overnight w/o charging yet.

@deslim, rooting doesn't involve wiping your phone. It's just like fliping a switch in your phone from 'access denied' to 'access granted'. Just that this switch is a SOB to flip. shakehead.gif haha

lol. In linux you also need to type in 'sudo' before doing root level operations, right? In Android, without 'rooting', typing 'su' will return an error because the system by default forbids any root level changes by the user. After 'rooting', the 'su' command goes thru.

For the APN problem, the APN list shouldn't be blank. If it is, you need to manually configure the settings yourself. Refer to this thread for details. http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1473755

About battery life, heavy user (auto sync multiple email quite frequently, occasional web browsing gaming and gps, 3g data connection always on) should expect battery life of 10 hours to 16 hours. Highly depends on your usage though.

lol now that I've rooted using adb+gfree, I'll want to root my next phone with the same method as well. ePenis aside, I feel it gives a deeper understanding to the user about what is going on in the process, or at least it's what the devs who came up with the procedure made it feel like.

I've used 2 different camera apps now, the Sense one (from the stock ROM) and the modified vanilla one (from CM6, which is closer to the G2 interface). I say the Sense one fcks up the picture by applying too much noise reduction by default. Can be rectified by playing with the sharpness settings (contradictory, but works).

The vanilla one produces better pictures, but only just slightly than the Sense one. The camera on this thing,is not that impressive, but just adequate to snap pics I guess.

yeah thats what i dislike about stock based roms. the sense camera is really quite canggih

im using gingervillain 1.5 which is based off a cm7 nightly, didn't get any problems with contact integration. maybe need to manually turn on under settings?

as for dialer, i agree the stock dialer is rclxub.gif need to get 3rd party dialer to replace. i use dialer one, not as good as sense but does the job la

I just found out what's wrong with my contact integration. Apparently vanilla dumb enough only able to integrate when your contact email is the same email my friend's facebook is, then I can link them. Otherwise, I just don't have that function to join. Not like sense that can manually link contact.

I tried dialer one, somehow a bit laggy.. argh, screw it. Shall see how can I cope while time fly..

Uhh... Sleeping beauty occurred just now, again, and I have not even put it overnight w/o charging yet. Full charged now see whether it'll die on me tmr morning.

It went one week with daily charging w/o powering down. Then just now finish charging, left it for a while then turned up dead. Occur one more time then it's back to ICU.

oh I dunno. I always have sim card in it.

The issue bothers me a lot coz I need the alarm function of the phone. Let's hope it's the breaking-in phase and is a one-off phenomenon.

I also believe this is due to gps. My battery can last for 40++ hours at minimal usage (standby time more). I use the alarm everyday to wake me up, but i do not use the gps. No sleeping beauty prob so far after 1 month of use.

hello people...

i need some help and advice from you guys...say if i buy this phone from UK which is locked to the carrier, can i get it unlocked ? something like jailbreak for iphone...

and if i unlock it once, would i need to unlock it again if i update anything with the phone ?

thanks for any feedbacks...
*
im using my tmobile g2 in usa. its locked when i got it. i unlocked it myself. and put in my DiGi simcard, it works in roaming mode tho.

and once its unlocked or s-off, its safe and permanent unless u unroot your phone. altho u need to update yourself with xda-developers, whereas there is time HTC will do some trick to the latest rom and automatically unroot your phone or somehow turn to s-off. not sure this affect lock/unlock status.

anyway, Virtuous v1.0 is out. im downloading it now.. i still prefer sense rom.. lol

GPS Test. Test your GPS.

More about apps can read the android apps thread.
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1400511

Fill in the form in the first page yo.

Yeah MKV files will lag. Not sure how to rectify it. My guess would be to overclock and use another video player.

subs usually if same file name with the video should load no problem.

Get vitalplayer and see if it plays your mkv smoothly. For the subs, use mkv sub extractor (from market too).

Well, if you don't mind converting, get Handbrake (a video converter). It converts mkv nicely with the subs intact.

Lol good if visionary worked for you. honestly gfree is dead simple to use. Especially useful if you wanna unroot, just type in -s on then you're good to go.

Regarding the error, you sure you pushed all the files? i rooted using the same method twice and both worked like a charm.

BIG PROBLEM

My home screen does not auto rotate to landscape, it only does when keyboard is slide out
The screen auto-rotates in apps, but not in home screen.

This is weird, tried restarting, pulling out battery even recalibrating the sensor, but still no success.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Recalibrate your G-Sensor, should work again after this.

P.S I don't think its actually supposed to auto-rotate in homescreen should it?

There have been reports of others having the same issue, apparently it is not supposed to rotate by sensor. Just an odd bug or something by HTC that allows rotation for the first few days.

Desire HD's one cannot be rotated, not at all. Desire Z's one is special in the way that it can actually go landscape in the first place (via sliding out the keyboard). As for auto rotate I cannot answer clearly myself.

I dont really agree, like my ipod touch everytime whenever possible i plug in, now the battery going worst and worst. Without plugging in, with wifi on can only survive like an hour +. So, for my phone now, i will only charge when is around 10% and lower.

@DjFoo, I not sure about it, i try manually change all my file name in my PC, some works but some still same sad.gif

@kelvinkou: physical kb by default dictionary is not enabled. only on-screen kb is enabled by default. U can check/verify both ur phy n on-scr knb setting by tapping EN->settings(english).

If it is already enabled, maybe can try restarting? smile.gif

what i meant by background data is background data syncing..

for the data plans to avoid being charged
menu > settings > wireless and networks > uncheck mobile network

for background data
menu > settings > accounts and syncs > uncheck background data

do note if ur wifi is turned on and there is a REMEMBERED wifi network, it will connect automatically and mobile network will not be used.
but of coz, be precautious and turn it off unless u really need to use it

Wouldn't surprise me if custom Sense ROMs enable it. IMO homescreens look weird in landscape. They get squished vertically.

Even on stock, using any launcher in Market, you can enable it to rotate by sensor detection. No biggie.

weird flashing radio was never brought up in this thread, while in DHD they talk about it like eating rice.

Here's one that was supposedly working great for many:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959488

Anyone with any experience with it? Just curious about how do I undo the flashing of a radio. Does restoring a nandroid backup undo it?

P/S: Liquid Metal port getting progress!

yup, really love the physical keyboard too. coupled with the subtle autocorrects (apostrophes etc) offered by Smart Keyboard, it really makes typing on my dz as natural as the keyboard on my computer smile.gif

downside is ofc, its practically impossible to type on the physical keyboard with one hand sad.gif

I loled at your term of like eating rice. laugh.gif

Anyways, the radio is a seperate entity from what gets backed up via nandroid. Simply put, Whatever ROM you flash, whatever you backup, whatever you do in the /data partition, your radio does not get affected.

yeah were caught in some situations where the phone loses signal. Planning to try a new radio but do not have a backup plan. Still trying to locate the stock radio image.

P/S: Liquid Metal ROM ported! Final touches before the dev releases it.

lol i saw that XDa thread too. Lurk in XDA. haha. Wasn't sure. Any will do?

the one in my phone now is

12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M

The closest match I see is
12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26

Differences are the bolded alphabets.

And I didn't flash ENG HBOOT (and don't plan to, later when need to unroot lazy do one more step), so unless someone has a PC10IMG.zip containing it, there's no backup plan for me.

Or is it as simple as creating a .zip file, throw the .img in it, and naming the zip PC10IMG?

Hi guys, I'm a first-time noob & really need some help here. Hope someone can.

I bought a Desire Z 2 weeks ago and passed it to a friend to be rooted and flashed to 2.3 with CM7. He did it and it came back fine. But now its developing some probs. Gps not working. Today, wi-fi suddenly conked. Only hsdpa works.

I'd like to unroot my phone & set it back to ori but to my horror I found out that my friend did not do a backup prior to flashing the phone. I know, dumb, but I am desperate to make it go back to factory mode, if anything so that I can backup the original Sense ROM b4 I get it flashed again.

My question: is there a version of Sense ROM out there that I can download & reinstall back to my phone? Or some other way to do it? Thanks a bunch!

You ran into any problems along the way?

Ads only appear when you're connected to the internet. Check if your WiFi is on, or you have data enabled.

If I'm on WiFi I wouldn't be bothered to find ad removal apps. Angry Birds is freaking awesome, and I don't mind funding the devs by having some ads appearing when I'm playing.

I'll be worried if I'm not on WiFi, though. Wouldn't want data sucking money out of my precious prepaid purse.

LOL i wouldn't trust a friend who doesn't do a Nandroid backup. Good practise aside, it saves your ass from these kind of situations. You'll need someone to donate their Desire Z stock nandroid backup to you, then perform the unrooting steps.

here's one fellow owner Dixon93 uploaded.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry39627992

Send him a PM and ask for permission to use it. Promise him you'll do a factory reset and won't be abusing his info.

@htcdzc, make sure the CWM recovery your friend flashed for you is compatible to flash Froyo ROMs.

I represent all HTC Desire Z owners give thanks to Dixon93 for allowing the use of his nandroid backup for emergency purposes. Linked in front page and credited accordingly.

THIS HOWEVER DOES NOT NEGATE THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING YOUR OWN NANDROID BACKUP.

Awww c'mon. You got the game for free. What's a few ads to continue the development of the game? Afterall you can disable wifi or data so that the ads dun show up.

In support of ads-supported apps for the future development of awesome apps.

Another reason why ppl shouldn't use ATK.

What apps are you closing?

Froyo manages memory very well by itself. If you use ATK wishing for battery usage to reduce, battery usage sometimes will increase because the apps have to activate themselves. Repeating the cycle, you're actually doing more work.

My explanation might not be on point, but in short there's no need for ATK. I'm fine w/o ATK and I can hit good battery life w/o needing to clear my memory for apps to run smoothly.

Hi everyone,

It's been a long time I haven't post in the old Desire Z thread, now moved to this thread already. rclxms.gif
I have a few questions, how do I find my NANDroid backup if I have done it previously? It seems that my stock ROM is having different build number from Dixon93, can I use his backup? notworthy.gif
Here is my screenshot before I use other custom ROMs.

Hi DJFoo000, thanks for the reply.

It seems that I don't have my original ROM backup in that folder. I might need to use Dixon93 backup in case of emergency. For the time being, I'm sticking with CM7. icon_rolleyes.gif

no need wipe battery stats one la. Actually calibrating battery also not that important coz the battery will eventually calibrate itself. Only when it starts to give below-par battery life then only need to calibrate.

Anyway, anyone having problems downloading stuff off the Android Market? I can't seem to get downloads to start today. Cleared data and rebooted also cannot.

EDIT:
Tried troubleshoot here: http://market.android.com/support/bin/answ...?answer=1067233
It seems I can't log into google talk (I never tried before this actually).

hey it's immediately active, well almost immediate, took one hours for the sim to deactivate before i change to new one. The system went down for maintenance (8-9pm).

Here at my home got Hsdpa signal, dunno how it is at other place. 41LY45, is the speed decreasing over time (like the popular in-the-beginning-its-fast-now-its-super-slow USB broadband service.)

I'm on CM7 now, and apparently the GPS stops working. Anyone faced this before? Should I update the radio?

it's a well documented bug in CM7 that GPS breaks for some ppl. There's a fix that involves pushing a GPS lib file or something like that from a previous nightly.

The XDA CM7 nightly thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916796

Anyone can help me with my Market problem?

there aren't any market updates that I can uninstall...

I'm on WiFi.

Surprisingly, Google replied me regarding this issue. Asked me to perform what is already stated in the troubleshoot page. Replied with a lengthy email to them. haha. Quite specific problem coz it happened after I tried to download after trying to install an app from the web market (which failed to start). I highlighted the same issue in the Market thread here.

lol i've cleared all data there is. I even factory resetted the phone. Market still stuck at 'starting downlaod...'.

GTalk doesn't connect. GMail retrieves mail flawlessly. I really dunno what went wrong there.

Pretty sure something wrong with my Google Account already...

my iPod friend said 'Apps Store didn't kena block also...'. lollll.

Google replied me, saying Market is not accessible from Malaysia at the moment. I said I know paid apps can't but free apps also can't ATM. Replied me with a list of free apps accessible country that apparently doesn't include Malaysia. lazy argue with that fella since my issue got resolved already. They really should consider putting 'try different access points' as a troubleshoot step.

^ No point in pursuing that. At the end of the day you'll tone down to conserve battery. SetCPU and CPU Tuner are the famous ones.

@illusi0nat0r, the phone comes with a cable though... So you don't have to worry about incompatibility. In theory it should work, though wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

I bought a 3rd party micro-USB charger and while charging, the screen will not response to any touch input at all, unless I unplug it.

i use setCPU, btw by default stock rom could not OC without flashing custom kernel or custom rom. For me, i still using stock ROM as so far the only ROM which everything work 100% for me lol.. and i used this kernel for OC to 1.4ghz (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847724)

follow guide from xda or google search should be ok. Be sure to follow step by step, example website i follow is this http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?titl...sire_Z:_Rooting or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843014 ...just be sure to follow all the step they give then everything will be ok.

and ya, psx4droid kinda laggy on 800mhz, overclocking to around 1.2~1.4ghz should be fine.

^would advise to do all customisation and hacking on your own, so that when there's a problem you know why it happens and how to solve it. Doing it yourself really reveals a lot about the workings of android as a system. It's not that hard, really. Reading is an essential skill, I must say.

yeap true, before i start rooting i also have 0 knowledge about rooting, like ADB, nandroid backup and all. while in the process, i get to understand more and more how the things work and all haha. Most importantly is to follow all the step given and for flashing custom rom, most importantly is to do nandroid backup. biggrin.gif

[gussing]

if you're on #1.34, pretty sure it's the 1.72 ROM. There's some reading to do regarding regaining root in 1.72.

If you're on 1.72 already, it could be 1.84. Rooting details are not clear yet but it should follow the one for 1.72, in theory.

If you're on 1.84 already, I dunno. Gingerbread isn't supposed to be here so soon.

[/guessing]

Rule of thumb is to not accept any OTA update as far as rooting is concerned.

yeah if bought new better just observe. personally never had a dropped call though. Reception low and 'death grip'? lol

Regarding warranty, don't depend on Maxis. Better find out on yourself how to get the warranty solved before it's too late, like give a call to maxis and ask them how's it done.

I'm not clear about that. I also have that experience where shootme still works fine after I enable s-on. My guess is that root permission were granted to these apps already so it matters no more. For the case of trackpad wake I think it's written as a system file so it remains there until you perform factory reset, I guess.

Not that pro also. haha

well sometimes is signal problem or phone reception... they will automatically switch the network if the signal of 3G is weak... that's y it sucks a lot of battery, i only use GSM network to get a better reception and also stable line... i tried use 3G it is kinda annoyed when you will get missed call notice or voice mail...
our malaysian 3G network sucks...

The video recording of this thing is ok, but the audio sucks man... No joke weih. Took recording of my friend's performance in a campus audition. The audio terus tak boleh guna. A lot of 'noise', like exploding like that. It's recording too much crap.

Normal phone FTW! No confusion caused or weird bug either.. rclxms.gif

Probably your phone support 3g but not supprt hsdpa lor.
Hehe, not as tho u use it also right? hmm.gif

Btw, after I upgraded radio, got a bit improvement on signal strength. But overnight with wifi on, my battery drop to 73 from 100. I never leave overnight before. Not sure was it right.

And I'm cheap bastards in usa, I bought my g2 at usd 290 and I'm proud of it. Lol

oh. Lol obviously sending back to them is the best option. But weighing between being w/o my beloved phone and living with a loose hinge, i chose the latter.

The magnetic strip thing is non-invasive and non-destructive though. Can try. Dunno where to get it only.

its something very normal when u overclock your device.

its pretty bad in 1113mhz settings, its worse when running 1.5ghz.

jz press the power button a few more times, few 1-2 seconds between each press. eventually your screen will on

^ device isnt overclocked..didnt install the oc kernel so i didnt bother..coz i'd rather save batt life for the sake of smoothness..however after that batt pull this morning, the device was very smooth..hopefully it'll stay that way..

@dj, wad happened was after exiting an app whether stock or downloaded, the white HTC screen would show meaning the sense loader is reloading..other symptoms, (random) device wouldnt wake as in screen wouldnt turn on but the buttons will light up. and like windows (really really rare) it would hang, then u'll have to lock the device and depending on luck or pure randomness it'll either work or u'll haf the screen symptom which you'll haf to do a battery pull..
