somemore it really depends on the financial situation... even though u knew long run will save you alot more, but now u need dslr so badly, so badly poisoned, but only enuf money to get 60D, instead of 7D or 1d mkIV, then just go for 60D lo.. im sure u will not really regret after getting 60D. its a good camera. i get 500D but not 550D cuz i got really really limited budget that time. and i know i will be upgrading again in the future.. so, its ok lo just learn from 500D since that time i only ahve that amount of money to allow me to buy that model..

guys, don't spam.
QUOTE(Michaelbyz23 @ Oct 6 2010, 12:29 AM) i understand aspire's situation as well.. but mayb perhaps he don really need the features that 7D body offers yet? like i said previously, im sure most of us will upgrade later.. so he get this one to learn first i guess? after that few years later after he know mroe bout photography and understand his needs, he will upgrade a better one.. the 60D just fits nicely into ppl who have not owned any dslr previously in my opinion.. most people couldn't even use 500D properly to begin with. i'd rather they spend $$$ attending workshop / classes to improve rather than spending more on body and feel good but photos look the same. |

QUOTE(chinti @ Oct 6 2010, 12:27 AM) wow~ ur way of getting lens~ each lens getting more exp~ not very sure what u trying to ask here. did u mean, btw, just a question tht suddenly pop out from my mind~ its better a get only a wide angle lens or isit better 2 get a wide angle tele lens~? *nt getting it,just asking* is it better to get a wide angle lens(10-22) or is it better to get a wide angle tele lens(15-85) is that what u mean? it depends on your preference la. if it was me, i'll get 1 lens for normal outing(17-50), 1 for tele photo(55-250), 1 UWA(10-22), 1 fast aperture prime(30 f/1.4), and a flash of course that is the set up which i prefer. *reply continue from last thread |

U fellas talking bout 24-70L. Very cheap only la now. There's a guy called shadow-dweller or sumthing selling it for only rm4700 IIRC. Who cares whether 24-70L IS comes out or whatever since it's so cheap now.

yea, what goldfries say is true..
no need so rush wan get the best of the best one go. most of the people only get their pro level bodies after years of experience with lower body. like goldfries himself, he use 500d 550d also wat. now baru upgrade to 60D cuz the features this body offers appeal to his needs. as for me, i have been reading for months and i began with pns camera before i venture into dslr.. so once i got my first dslr, it doesnt seem new or alien to me anymore.. instead i can enjoy the photography itself, while learning new skills.. |

So that I can abuse the free workshops n free photography trips to the Zoo, Melaka, etc etc. Those workshops sure help a lot n get right down to the basics that so many fellas here dont even have any idea about. FOV, Compression, barrel distortion, pincushion distortion n all oso talak tau. most people couldn't even use 500D properly to begin with. i'd rather they spend $$$ attending workshop / classes to improve rather than spending more on body and feel good but photos look the same. |

Saw the Canon shop in KLCC carrying 60D. They had two demo units there too, one with the 18-55 and the other with the 18-200.
It's nice actually. Without actually spending much time with it, the only gripe I have is the lock button on the mode dial. And oh, I like its shutter sound. |

no weird sound during focus. but the focus speed seem just almsot the same as 18-55mm kit lens. image everything is sharp. OS working fine. but got sound.
The lens inside seems as if very loosely packed. when i turn around it feels like something is going to fall off. and u can hear elements inside shifting when u over turn the lens. but when i switch the camera on, the sounds gone. |

Email the company you bought from and ask them for an exchange as well as an explanation. You should then send back the lens over if there is a problem. If nothing is wrong, then I guess it I'd how sigma zooms work. This post has been edited by azrinarizz: Oct 6 2010, 08:39 AM |

The OS seems to have a little side effect though. You may be aware that the active OS/IS/VR produces a "humming" noise caused by the system which shifts the OS/IS/VR element to compensate shake. The Sigma has the strange behavior to do that in non-OS mode as well. Even more strange - the image gets "lifted" into position when switching on the camera. Obviously the OS system remains active to keep the OS element in a static position in non-OS mode. This behavior is "normal" and no defect. This unnecessary power drain may be somehow annoying but, frankly, most users will not disable the OS anyway Lepak for a while first lor... wait for someone with stabilized Sigma to post. It may be the OS.
My 70-200 f4 IS makes some noise if I shake it too. Sounds like gears moving around. |

I just got my 550D and 17-55mm lens.
Using a tripod, i tested the lens sharpness and to my surprise, i notice that switching ON the IS will consistently produce softer image than turning it OFF. Anyone has the same results with this lens? Here's the 100% crops to show what i mean, IS on: ![]() IS off: ![]() |

Michaelbyz23,
Initially I thought you were describing it as soft muffled chucking sound, which is very normal in IS lens, which has this sound increasingly in effect of its focal length. But I wasn't expecting such loud sound which sounds like glasses are in direct impact with the lens body(?). I only had Sigma 18-200mm OS that has OS and is Sigma. It does have noise when I shake, but doesn't sound like that. Similarly to my 70-200mm f4L IS, it is very loud, but does not sound worrying. ------ steven789, IS should be off when you mount on tripod, unless it is the new generation of image-stabilized telephoto lens that does work on tripod for panning. |

@mengsuan, so that means mine isnt really normal? Yea, i posted the videos at other forums and people give comments just like yours. some of them have the same lens, but their unit don produce such loud sound. It does not sound like the glass inside is moving and hitting on each other as well as the barrel.

http://www.bobatkins.com/smf/index.php/topic,769.0.html ini comfort me the most. i may not wanna send it over to exchange anymore i guess. but i will see what the dealer and sigma say about this. and what uncle Ian said is true also, got warranty 4 years. if spoil then send for warranty stil sempat. but anyway, just hope they say this is normal and it applies to all lenses with OS. then i lega edi. So far, everything seems to work fine with the lens. tested in low light situation and find that focus wasnt that fast, IQ not too good in low lights. But it doesnt really matter now as long as its fine.. tested some close up, it really performs cuz it can really go pretty close. note that i say close up, not macro.. sharpness, is excellent built quality quite sturdy n heavy.. size big enuf and offer better ergonomics. OS works fine. turn it off or on the image still not shaky. dunno y, maybe my hand too steady? so i decided not to test further anymore. i just wanna share some of the pictures i took with the lens when i run some testings on it. ini comfort me the most. i may not wanna send it over to exchange anymore i guess. but i will see what the dealer and sigma say about this. and what uncle Ian said is true also, got warranty 4 years. if spoil then send for warranty stil sempat. but anyway, just hope they say this is normal and it applies to all lenses with OS. then i lega edi. OS works fine. turn it off or on the image still not shaky. dunno y, maybe my hand too steady? so i decided not to test further anymore. i just wanna share some of the pictures i took with the lens when i run some testings on it. that one u need to wait for next week bobatkin's review. and read some reviews on the net.. i nvr really tried tamron. so i don know the performance. but from what i see at fluitie's photos, they are sharp also. but something sigma offers that appeals to canon users like me, is the direction of rotation. =x tats me, my personal preference.

QUOTE(fruitie @ Oct 6 2010, 03:52 PM) buy 10-22 if u like landscapes. shoot at between f5.6 to f8 for optimum. 3.5 is unusable imo. about the same fov as the 16-35mm on FF.imho the 70-200 f4 non IS is hard to use. usable outdoor only mostly. QUOTE(steven789 @ Oct 6 2010, 12:12 PM) I just got my 550D and 17-55mm lens. hi steven, if u r shooting on a tripod it's best to turn IS off on that lens. on some higher end lens it detects if the body is on a tripod but i always turn it off as well. since u r on a tripod if IS is turned on, the gyros are spinning inside and will try to compensate for movement which isn't there. so what you are showing in the pics is expected. Using a tripod, i tested the lens sharpness and to my surprise, i notice that switching ON the IS will consistently produce softer image than turning it OFF. Anyone has the same results with this lens? Here's the 100% crops to show what i mean, This post has been edited by crocs: Oct 6 2010, 04:12 PM |

Hi to all sifus here
I wanna to ask about the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens.....does it a good buy? It costing around RM350....my purpose to buy this lens is I want it's wide aperture which allow. Easier shoot at night and most important the bokeh produced by it It is very cheap compared to the 50mm f/1.4L which is costing around 2K and 35mm f/1.2L which is around 5K something......I wonder how it's quality |

QUOTE(A Wil @ Oct 6 2010, 04:55 PM) Hi to all sifus here definitely as a first lens. good for portraiture on 1.6 crop factor bodies. the build quality is not so good though with plastic mount but for that price nobody shud complain I wanna to ask about the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens.....does it a good buy? It costing around RM350....my purpose to buy this lens is I want it's wide aperture which allow. Feel like i dont need that kind of range. i got the lens together with my body. I bought it at RM3300 with the 550D body. But it still depends how much i can sell. So should i sell the 18-135 refund for better standard zoom lens?? This post has been edited by varickgoh: Oct 6 2010, 10:16 PM |

what do u mean still no problem? all third party has red dot, but not all designed for FF.. in this case sigma 17-50 is desgined for 1.6x crop sensor.
if attached to 5d mark II, still can work, but will have vignetting. i believe if u mount this lens on 1.3x crop sensor, u will see vignetting as well |

someone requested for the close up quality of the lens.. so i tried my best ar to shoot some flowers.. but also some other objects as well. i dunno how to do 100% crop, i just use windows paint. select the flower and crop it my own way.. sry! the first two pictures are unedited. since also got ppl wanna see OOC pictures.. hehe.. the rests are tweaked abit at lightroom cuz the WB got messed up in some of the photos =.= i was using cloudy to shoot the affected pictures. the first picture of the flower is abit unsharp. shot at f5 at 1/60.. and abit windy.. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Should go and take picture of it when they fire up the multi coloured spot lights. Yeap, it's the Niagara Falls. Can't get to the Canadian side cause I don't have the visa so it's kinda sad. I would have took pictures of the lights too but then the lights were fired up too late. Had to get on my bus back dy. Unfortunately I don't have any weather-sealed gears so I didn't dare to take photos during the Maid of the Mist. Yeah, the non-L is already sufficiently sharp. Any serious macro photography will always involve a good tripod anyway. That and at f/9 or narrower, the IS isn't going to matter anymore.

Sounds good but we can't really judge when there is only little 60D for sale. There are chances that it would be even cheaper when every sellers have the stock.

every filter company like hoya, kenko or b+w has varying type of filters.
and usually the better the quality, the higher the price. |

the lens worked superbly perfect. no problem with it so far. it is indeed designed that way.
after putting the b+w filter, the photo quality degraded.. tats all lo.. but shoot indoors not much problem i guess. the problem is when shooting outdoors. |

Yes if u compare to kit lens f5.6. With kit lens at lowlight I may have to pump iso to 1600 to get over 100 shutter speed. With this one 800 or sometimes 400 will do.Brew I'm not saying that iso 400 can have 1/100s ar.. Don misunderstood me..
That's for me and what I observe. And this os performs better than kit lens is. Again this is also my personal observation. So that's why I can use 400 or 800iso for this lens but 1600 for kit lens lo.. Better weigh and ergonomics also affect ur handshake intensity. Too light will make me shake more.. Those r my style and my personal preference ar.. Btw the Mrc filter is soo expensive. After concert to Malaysia os around 260 to 300+.. T.T can buy new nifty fifty liaw This post has been edited by Michaelbyz23: Oct 8 2010, 11:23 AM |

Do correct me if I'm wrong. right, the usm is just the motor, the IQ depends on the glass inside. it's unable to focus is because the focus point doesnt have enough contrast to focus cos it's too dark or everything is the same color in the dark This post has been edited by crocs: Oct 8 2010, 12:35 PM |

hmmm... sample of sharpness ar.. i posted most of the pictures on flickr already. quite busy cuz of studies..so i don really have time to test the sharpness.. mayb in future i will do some test to compare this lens with kit lens and nifty fifty. btw, after i use the b+w filter, one of the pictures i noticed that there is some serious chromatic aberation (red line) at bottom left if i zoom in. and also the whole picture is whitish, de-constrasted. like i said just now. sharp, trust me it is xD hehe... oh ya, i wan to clarify smth.. the OS works well despite the rattling sound, since it is designed that way. sigma technician emailed me and clarified with me liaw. the sigma lens with OS mechanism will have the sound, like for example, the 17-70 OS also.. for further explanation of why... » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

the photo you see on your dslr screen is deceptive because (i) a slightly blurry/oof shot when zoomed out to the 3" size on your dslr will look perfectly sharp; and (ii) the actual brightness you perceive on your dslr screen is relative to the brightness settings and whether you are in a dark room or bright sunshine.
for (i) you need to zoom in all the way to check sharpness; for (ii) ... learn to use histogram i guess. [edit] your PC screen is uncalibrated (i assume). so when you print the photo, what looks good on your pc screen could well turn out to be over/under on the print too This post has been edited by deodorant: Oct 8 2010, 03:22 PM |

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Hi bro(s), i didnt mean to against your opinion or spam the thread, but somehow as a newbie here, i dont find any problem to start with semi-pro canon as his/her first camera. I just feel some of the word use above a bit mean to me. I am going to buy my first DSLR soon, either 550D or 60D, after using my sony T10 for few years. I mean with my own story, when i found out my T10 cant produce the kind of photo i want, i decided to upgrade to DSLR, but it does take time for me to collect money to get a DSLR especially in my place, i can tell you even now, 550D in my place is 3200-3400 for 18-55 kit, that is same price with new 60D in KL. So when i finally collected enough money to buy my 550D (my place price i mean), i found out i can get 60D with same price in KL. So why cant i buy a 60D if i have the opportunity to go KL and get 60D as my first DSLR, i can learn using DSLR by using 60D too. Yes i am newbie, i have a lot to learn in DSLR but i think dont label us newbie like that loo... |

Yes i am newbie, i have a lot to learn in DSLR but i think dont label us newbie like that loo... Sure that whatever DSLR that you buy will produce sharper/less noisy pictures than your T10 but a 550D or a 60D or a 7D all produce the 99% similiar picture assuming that the person behind the camera is the same and using the same lens in the same condition. My personal opinion is that getting a high end camera.... could in some situations... actually be detrimental as one will spend much more time learning how to use a dslr rather than how to take pictures. Hence the general recommendation to just get the best bang for buck model (you said it yourself that the money is hard to come by) and keep the difference in the bank until you get limited by your lens and knows what lens to get next to best suit your style. |

Buy what you like and what makes you happy. You can only learn about the camera like what is the best and what it is capable of doing. In the end, you are the one who is using the camera.I was using a 1000D for 1 year+. I bought my 40D last May. 2 months later, I got a 7D. I had the chance to go FF aka 5D mark II and people even push me to get it. But I told myself, I want the king of crops because I simply need to boost more range + speed. |

How can the viewfinder prism get scratched so easily? I once used to touch it so much from outside and inside the camera also no scratches (but focussing screen was badly scratched).

Oh, then I think it is the focussing screen right above the flipping mirror? That one can get scratched by any thing. Even microfiber cloth is too rough for it.
I got mine replaced in Canon for RM15 only. |

Found a shop named Photo VW, they sell 550D 18 - 135mm @ RM 3500 with 8GB SD Tripod and Bag... can this shop be trusted? i mean it's relatively cheap compared to other shops and they say: price can be further discussed. i scared there's something fishy about this shop... and another thing... which brand of filter do you guys recommend? i don't mean UV ones tho. and where to get them cheap? going to buy camera this sunday... excited weh |

Hello everyone.
I am in a dilemma, and I need some opinions. I am debating between a 500D and 550D, but not sure which one to get. I'm going to use the camera for semi-casual macro shots. Food, flower, jewelry, smallest objects maybe around 8mm. Not so hardcore to go shoot small insects like ants. I know about the extension method with 50mm f1.8 lens. But I just don't know which camera is better, 500D or 550D. I am kind of on a budget as well, which is what making me think twice about the 550D. I'm just wondering if 550D is really needed/necessary for semi-casual macro shooting. |

It doesn't fail just that... if you're picky theres noise ... oh yeah... anyone here have been sending to canon for sensor cleaning? it seems that my curious little niece accidently touch the inside of the camera while changing lense and smile at me...somehow it is the revenge of not giving her attention

When someone touches the inside of camera while changing lens, the sensor is still being protected. What is exposed is just the mirror which does not affect anything.

The crowd will almost completely dissapear. Try setting up ur cam on a tripod, 30 sec exposure. Then, take the pic and walk briskly infront of your cam. Same concept

I read from Digital Photo Magazine July 2010 edition, i bought from Pasar Malam. It teach this kind of technique.
1. Set high aperture, like f/22 2. Set ISO 100 or 200 3. Need 5 seconds or more 4. Manual focus and ND filter Oh ya this is for daytime shotting. I never try it so no picture. Maybe wait til i got my DSLR |

It's like upgrading from a Kelisa to a Myvi.chinkw, you should try getting better lenses....are you still using the 1855 kitlens?

The umbrella probably absorbed some of the impact though ^^; |

I noticed that my shots are not sharp enough, regardless on any lens. Could be I boost up the contrast too much.
Gotta change my settings again. Don't want to ruin my shots in Langkawi. Lastly, 17mm is not wide enough. Captured a group photo the other day, had to move backward a bit to make sure everyone is in frame. |

fruitie - if you're using UWA, you'll be snapping at 17 to 22 range anyway. going towards 10 produces distortion that's bad enough to ruin group photos.

I think they r trying to point out what's the significant difference between L and normal lens. So one of the points would be sharpness I guess? Yea there r many other ways to achieve great sharpness too. Maybe spending all your money can at least help compensate the "not so good" skills and in the same one produce sharp image? That's just my point of view. If compare kit Lena to like Tamron or sigma, indeed there r big differences in term of sharpness, built quality, image contrast and et etera. That's why u see canon 17-55 is more than ten times te price of 18-55. Why would people still buy it? Besides sharpness, people also look for speed of the lens. And many over qualities, depending on personal preference. As for me, I demand for high speed, sharpness and large dof. Maybe I don knownphotography as much as u do, yet, that's why I spend so much buying lens that has almost identical focal length.. Oh well, let image and picture quality justify whether it is necessary to spend ten times more money on similar identical lens.. That's my point of view. Peace<

And to me, as long as I have enough money to get third party lens with the same specs as canon lens, i would be more than satisfied already

my pov,
well everyone had their own preference... he/she love to deploy tripod, jacking aperture to F8 @ ISO100 does not mean other's would do that. Ask those fast pace event photog or wedding photog and see if they would show you the middle finger or not. Just who the hell gonna wait for you to take ya sweet time to deploy the tripod ? you miss means you miss lol ade betul kar ?? or perhaps ask the groom n bride to had another wedding dinner/ church session again just because your godly tripod condemn during the event and you cant shot without it... got logic kar ini macam? btw i dont even need a tripod to get sharp pic while doing macro over 1:1 magnification @ F14-F18 at iso100 |

QUOTE(ifer @ Oct 9 2010, 11:40 PM) erm, to be honest i have to use tripod everytime i take my photos coz my film's iso is only 100 and i don't use flash and my aperture is usually at around 8 to 11. can share more skill?but to be honest with you, getting sharp images involve other kind of factors beside buying the sharpest lens in the world. but then again, what do members on this forum know about photography? I much prefer a stellar composition than a tack-sharp photo which fails to draw any sort of interest to it. So long the photo is in focus and isn't shaky it's good enough for me.
According to the way ifer is putting it, sounds like he knows much more about getting a sharp photo than us all. So please grace and enlighten us with your vast and profound photographic knowledge. And it's Voigtlander. Cosina-Voigtlander. |

Thats why even now for most of the "moment shots" or money shot in hollywood they would prefer film over digital Eh? Unless you mean medium format (even this I doubt) or large format, I doubt people still use 35mm film over digital for "money shot(s)" in Hollywood. Knowing how much post-processing photos of that caliber have to go through to make it, I honestly doubt they still utilize 35mm film. It's more of Phase One/Hasselblad here, not Canon/Nikon...
