Hello everyone.

I am in a dilemma, and I need some opinions. I am debating between a 500D and 550D, but not sure which one to get.

I'm going to use the camera for semi-casual macro shots. Food, flower, jewelry, smallest objects maybe around 8mm. Not so hardcore to go shoot small insects like ants.

I know about the extension method with 50mm f1.8 lens. But I just don't know which camera is better, 500D or 550D. I am kind of on a budget as well, which is what making me think twice about the 550D. I'm just wondering if 550D is really needed/necessary for semi-casual macro shooting.

If your budget can spare for 550D, go for it. Otherwise buy 500D and better lens and also lighting set up. In macro photography, it is your set up and skills bring more important than minor difference in camera capability.

Would you say this is good? Macro shot of earrings with point and shoot.
I'm getting a DSLR because my point and shoot's battery cover broke, and now held close with cello tape. And it sometimes 'hang' also and will need to take out battery to reset. Quite annoying to open and tape back cello tape. Fix will be over RM200... might as well invest in DSLR.

So shooting-quality wise they are both almost the same la? But I heard that 550D do better in low lighting right? How low can a 500D go until it fail to capture things clearly?

When someone touches the inside of camera while changing lens, the sensor is still being protected. What is exposed is just the mirror which does not affect anything.

The photo is decent but isn't impressive. While many compacts offer super-macro kind of feature, DSLR usually require macro lens do shoot closely with high magnification. You will need to allocate some budget on macro lens or at least, close up filters or some sort of things.

I assume your macro photography are done in controlled environment. Why do you need a camera with better low-light performance? You will probably be having lights illuminating your subject very well.

But since you're considering deeply into 550D, I believe you do have the budget to spare. Get the 550D and you might find it useful for other usage as well.

Ahaha thanks, I'm not a hardcore photographer la smile.gif

It's not really a controlled environment, I rely on natural lighting and sometimes when it rains it can get a bit difficult.
