I’m trying to compile a list of Penang Food as almost every other week we have people asking for places as to where to eat in Penang. Keeping track of the Penang Thread is difficult cos it is 62 pages and 1200++ post!

A. this thread is about places to eat in Penang and not where to stay or sight-seeing.

The one in Jln Mount Erskine is very budget one and caters to students in the nearby TAR college. If have support for this western from more forummers, I'll go and find out the actual name & address.

ther's a chinese restaurant called 风味 which serves the best fried and baked pork leg
dunno the place name but i remember its near the ship restaurant

char kuay teow there's a coffee shop on Queen's Street that's a corner lot. The name is like Kedai Kopi something about Stars

very seldom i will compliment malay cooked food that follows chinese style, but this AYU MEE UDANG is something special....

Located in Teluk Kumbar, I came across this isolated location when participated in Penang Food Hunt 3 years back (I am from KL).

google "ah leng CKT" will give u alot info lo. the same goes to sin hwa. those 2 + lorong selamat one are consider the top3 to most of my penang friend la

for the pulau tikus siam laksa, search for Annathai Kitchen lo. but well, the one at tan jetty is better la

and yes, the assam laksa had move to the place you mentioned long time ago, but the name is still the same la


for the tua pui curry mee leh, best to go early at 10 AM, ahah. Coz quite dirty if u go late, since its at the road side, and well, the food was not close with anything, and all the blah will go in lol

but there got or kio jelly meh? are u saying "ai yu bing" ?

Hi ya, the one at the old Federal Cinema one ah? Err, shy la I eat there very often but currently... many of my friends and relative dun have good comment about his CKT anymore. It is more of Fried Big Prawn$ di$h f£avor with koay teow.

"ai yu bing"??? Sorry today dun have mainland China translator with me, but or kio jelly is jelly with lemonade.

Bro, it has been 4 years now since I last frequent mainland. There are many hidden forgotten gems but scare I give wrong info. Which is why I did mention help needed, so feedbacks & comments from Tai Koh are most welcome.

ya i fan of dim sum.. As i said the one that open at night in town area but not so nice, and also air itam and farlim area quite a few shop.

Tanjung tokong , Sea Pearl Restaurant - so famous for their crab and prawn. Fried Bee hoon is so home cooked style. Oh Chien is damn nice there..

and not to forget their Seng Kam Peng.. >< eat non stop ! !!

Lorong Mount Eskrine - Curry mee by the road 1.. Their chillie.. >< Beh tahan ! ! ! even thou only open for breakfast.

just like to know if anyone has any recommendations for first timers in penang where good food is concerned?

to be honest, try hawker area in pulau tikus market at night
lok lok, duck egg char koay teow & siam laksa is good there

off burma road, swatow lane hawker centre. New World Park, ice kacang is nice, cucur udang, tomyam noodle, curry mee, is good. other food there is pretty decent

good food is scatter around not centralize

KL seafood got better chef & of course better price. Many times, people come to Penang for the hawker food rather than seafood.

Yes, dim sum in Penang not as good as those in Ipoh or KL

So, I heard / read that there are 'territorial' areas at hawker centre / street food whereby you can order food from specific food from selected stalls. Is that true? Does it happen to all hawker centers?

Maxim Dim Sum makes pretty good Dim Sum, they are in Sungai Dua, Bangunan Lip Sin. If I'm not wrong they are a branch of Max Gourmet opposite Queensbay?

For Mee Goreng, I personally think that the one in Pulau Tikus market tastes better, it's in a kopitiam but I don't know the name, it's very near to the Jalan Bangkok one, just opposite it (one road away). I've heard the one near Fort Cornwallis/beside Esplanade tastes pretty damn good too but I never had the chance to try.

Gurney Drive Wan Tan Mee worths mentioning too, they're special as they're spicy (麻辣/ma lat)

Bayan Bay right?...it has moved to the road directly opposite the Sungai Dua bus terminal, sorry i forgot the road name. Means for the bus terminal, go straight at the T-junction (it's the road heading to Queensbay Mall), the food court is about 200-300 meters from the traffic light.


For vegetarians, there are many decent shops too...i think there is one which is buffet style at Irrawaddy Road, off Burmah Road, and there is another vegetarian shop at farlim, behind farlim's KFC, not bad too =)

The mee goreng sotong there is awesome, do try it out. And also there's a Chinese stall opposite which sells western food their chicken chop is nice as well.
Oh and also remember to order coconut shake to quench the thirst lol

where to get putu mayong in penang?i googled and only 1 or 2 results came out and those also really old posts liao
ooh can also recommend places for tau foo fah??

oh chien it seems Yi Garden and Lam Ah Kopitiam recommended-anyoone tried?

You can get putu mayong beside Penang times square building in the evening, not sure what it taste... never try before..
Tau foo fah are available at most of the morning marke, just go to any stall selling soya drink and dessert..

Never try oh chien in those 2 stall before, but there are few well known oh chien stall in penang.. Carnarvon street and air itam..

Putu mayong? must go early(before 9am) to Jelutong Wet market near the row of shops selling GAS, electrical goods and canned food.

Just been to Penang. Went to the Penang Famous Cendol costing RM1.90.
People will be standing by the roadside and enjoy the cendol.
But I still feel that the cendol is quite normal.
Melaka cendol is still the better one.

Different person different poison mah!

BTW which stall did you go to?

There are two stalls directly opposite each other. One got very few customers compare to the other one.

best curry is the 1 in assumption road (near chain ferry)

price a bit crazy, but still lots of customers every day

the best fried oyster (after trying so many places) is the 1 on the way to kekloksi temple, the restaurant name is keat seng or something like that...

the curry mee at the same place is also must try, not bad.....

2 years ago have but now I also dunno. Seldom visit that area liao. Actually hate to visit that area cos limited parking & jam jam jam.

Everytime I go Penang and melaka I sure will eat cendol. And to be honest I can totally understand how some will prefer Melaka over Penang cendol, cos essentially they are different 'styles.' it's like saying 'is prawn mee better than pork noodle?' they are both noodles but different style.

a good one will be malay char koay teow and chinese char koay teow

it's 2 different thing that share the same name

btw, just went to soul kitchen, not bad eh

oso cannot compare mah

hokkien mee can be:

1. northern type, soup cooked with prawns or <insert animal> ribs

2. southern type, fat noodles fried with soy sauce

i hate to call hokkien mee as prawn mee because in my entire life, i only know prawn mee = mee udang, which is something in between mee rebus and mee kuah ketam, usually malay selling.....

Geforce, yea I know , but its like Melaka and opening cendol, both share the same name as cendol Ma, which is quite diff actually

IMO when u eat something , don't bother too much on the name itself or u will limit urself too much on how it shud taste and how it shud be cooked.

Btw yes , I won't want to call Penang hokkien mee as prawn mee too , just like I wont use soccer to call football

Those restaurant have imported famous dim sum chef from Hong Kong and China. Very ho heong and ho mei! (sry my Chinese sux)
