I’m trying to compile a list of Penang Food as almost every other week we have people asking for places as to where to eat in Penang. Keeping track of the Penang Thread is difficult cos it is 62 pages and 1200++ post!
Please note
A. this thread is about places to eat in Penang and not where to stay or sight-seeing.
B. the list is not 100% accurate as such I’ll need your help in keeping it relevant and up-to-date. So feedbacks & comments are most welcome and also do remember TASTE is very personal hor..

Here's the work-in-progress list:
Penang Recommended/ Famous Food
Green denotes outlet run by Muslim
CHAR KOAY TEOW
Siam Road (towards Anson Road) Fried using Charcoal!
Song River Cafe, Gurney Drive
Pulau tikus night market (Stall on the pavement nearer to Cantonment Road, be prepare to wait long) (I think this one is overrated. Personally I think it is not tasty enough)
Coffeeshop, Lorong Selamat (notorious for being arrogant, ignores your special requests and you even have to queue up for her Char Koay Teow (self service).)
Khoon Hiang Cafe, Ah Leng Premium CKT N5 24.779 E100 19.171
CHAR KOAY TEOW
Alma Char Koay Teow, Jalan Rozhan, Bukit Mertajam( http://wikimapia.org/#lat=5.3317296&lon=10...=18&l=0&m=s&v=9 )
Ismal Char Koay Teow, Jalan Bunga Raya, Bukit Mertajam
ASSAM LAKSA
Taman Emas kopitiam, Jalan Gottlieb (facing Penang Chinese Girls’ High School)
Kheng Pin coffeeshop, Jalan Sri Bahari/Penang Road junction
Kek Seng Cafe, Penang Road
Coffeeshop, Lorong Selamat
Padang Brown, Johor Road/Dato Kramat Road junction
Air Itam wet market (on the way to Kek Lok Si Temple) (this one failed. soup is not as thick as before, i'd give it 65%)
Air Itam roundabout (to Penang Hill Train) (street foodstalls at memorial statue) (only open after 2pm) (too sweet for kl kaki like me. I prefer asam laksa to be sour and rich with asam flavour. i'd give it 80%)
SIAM LAKSA
Coffeeshop which is located beside the market & at the 'T' junction of Tun Sardon Road/Balik Pulau Road. Opening hours: 11 am – 4 pm. Closed on Wednesday
Kheng Pin coffeeshop, Jalan Sri Bahari/Penang Road junction
Coffeeshop at Lorong Selamat
HOKKIEN MEE
Swee Kong coffeeshop, opposite Jalan Burma police station (went to swee kong, cant find it)
CURRY MEE
Bee Hooi, Jalan Burma/Lorong Pulau Tikus junction (went to bee hooi, cant find it either. is it hokkien prawn mee?)
FISH HEAD BEEHOON
Sky Cafe, Chulia Street (NOT THERE ANYMORE. However, char siew rice and duck rice served there is one of the best. HIGHLY recommended. Only opens after 11am)
NASI KANDAR
Raffee nearby Swee kong is not bad. I like the taste when I mix all kuah together.
SAR HOR FUN
Sky Cafe, Chulia Street (as above, not there anymore)
CENDOL
Kweng Kwee Street/Penang Road - 2 stalls, look for the one on your left or with the most customers crowding it
(4 stars!)
