Really I'd opt for the MBP 13 at any time. Its faster, the only drawback will be the flash storage that it doesnt have. Unless you are picky about that, then you should go for the MBA. Not to mention to cost difference too. For the price of the MBA (Not too sure the Malaysian price) you could probably get a pretty great spec on the MBP.

wow! thanks for your reply!

i am quite concerned with the weight of the macbook as i need to bring it to uni everyday..
is 2kg mbp that heavy for travelling?

as for mba, is the 2gb ram enough to do lots of browsing and normal stuff? no gaming.
as the mba might be used as a primary laptop. no desktop tongue.gif

The weight is subjective. I got used to walking 30-40 minutes up and down hills with ~5kg. Not necessarily comfortable for others.

If you're very conscious about weight, then opt for the MBA. A stock 'Air and stock 'Pro will be barely discernible in terms of speed, partly thanks to the Flash drive in the Air. Plus, 11" means smaller bag space required.

I have both mbp and latest MBA. For basic use the MBA even with 2 gb ram is good enough
But if I have only one choice I will buy the mbp as it has more features and a good desktop replacement. If you need to lug it around is bit heavy
One just cannot have best of both world

As the saying goes " One can never have enough of memory" and if you can afford to pay for it, why not
Increasing the memory will not help you to last your Mac .

I'd say even by next year your Mac will be out of date already

You can never keep up with technology. As long as the laptop you have serves it purpose, then I don't see why you should even consider replacing it every one or two years. I think the previous generation of macbook pro is still well to do. Regarding the lag part, I'm not sure how to technically explain it but its usually due to the old registry files etc cluttering up your hdd. Use programs like onyx to check for any errors on your disk and if it does have any, just do a quick disk fix via your startup. Wait, actually you can just do a disk check on the disk utility app. lol doh.gif

I have been a MAC user for the last 5 years. LAG issue seriously only occur in Windows O/S - that's why you can see there are at least up to 20 types of software ( free, shareware and paid ) just for you to clean up/defragmentise your hard drive to improve hard drive performance. There are too such software for Mac but is not so commonly used. Infact I never used such software, I leave it to the O/S itself to do it. Some users prefer to use such software - it is one's choice. But on Windows you definately need. Also Windows OS " attracts" viruz attacks/infections which will affect the O/S stabilioty-performance. Virus infections are rare on Macs and "touch wood" never faced such in my last 5 years since using the Mac

Apple upgrades their Macs at least once a year ( minor ) and major ( about 2 years) unlike Windows Notebooks you see the makers changing their models every 2 to 3 months !!!

Having used the Windows platform for the past 20 years ( since 1985 ) , I must say using the MAC was a completely new refreshing experience. I am so impressed by the Mac I always promote users to change and always say " Once you use a Mac , you will never want to use a Windows OS machine anymore"

same proc, same hdd, same integrated GPU = same performance. yes one is 2gb and another is 4gb, but if one doesnt utilize a lot of ram then it does matter much smile.gif

that's the good thing about macs. even if u dont do any defrag or maintenance stuff, it'll probably run fine for 2 or 3 years w/o lagging. worst case maybe ur hard drive spoil and u juz have to replace it. hard drives is pretty much the most prone to break component in a computer, no matter mac or windows, no matter desktop or laptop

here's a simple answer

macbook (the white colour one): plastic body easy to get dirty n scratches. no firewire (u probably dont need this anyway), no SD card reader, no battery charge indicator

macbook pro 13: about the same spec as macbook white but aluminium body looks nice, easier to keep clean. got SD card reader, firewire, keyboard backlight

macbook pro 15/17: apart from the obviously bigger screen, u get more powerful CPU and GPU

unibody is just a term referring to the construction of the laptop's body. all macbooks including macbook pros are 'unibody' now.

so which one should u buy? if on a budget i'd highly recommend the MBP 13. but the macbook isnt bad either smile.gif i just think the price difference is pretty much worth it
*
I would get MBP 13 too
not to say the 2GB
the body and keyboard backlight dy worth to pay for another few hundred bucks =D

If you're going for a 13", get the 13" MBA. The SSD makes it fly. If possible get, 4GB ram & 2.13 GHz. That'll smoke any 13" MacBook, Pro or not.

Or go for a 15" Macbook Pro. Get the cheapest one and upgrade the RAM and HD yourself.
