After another session on head banging on how to setup the WRT54GL to work with the UniFi, I've come to a conclusion that a pre native support for VLAN with the manufacture firmware is needed before hand (Meaning VLAN support out of the box, this is also my assumption only. I don't have any networking background to start with lol...).

This will give a better margin of error for the DD-WRT firmware to work well with the device with VLAN configurations.

Or if you're good with OpenWRT commands then you can try to get the WRT54GL to be able to work with it VLAN support.

As this post now, I have taken the liberty to flash my DIR-615 to DD-WRT.

Will post again if I manage to get the IPTV working lol...

Just wonder if DIR-615 can work with Linksys WAG120N, according to D-link website, DIR-615 is able to work with ADSL/ADSL2+ wireless modem router.

When the WAG120N is acting as the ADSL2 bridge, then the DIR-615 can work with it. When the DIR-615 is the bridge, only other IP based routers with PPPoE support can work with it smile.gif

Tagged VLAN support is based on a kernel module, so I don't think the hardware (or switch chip) has to support VLANs for it to work :3

Does that green dustbin thingy mean that Unifi is available already, or is it just the normal streamyx line?

I think I get what you meant, I will use DIR-615 as primary/master and WAG120N as secondary/slave or bridge. Thx

Correct if I am wrong, the green TM 'dustbin' is located where your residential telecommunication infra is via underground telephone manhole; if overhead, there is white TM junction box mounted on the telephone overhead pole usually located at backlane.

You can't use the WAG120N with Unifi because its an ADSL2 router. Its WAN port is an RJ11 jack meant for a phone line. You could install dd-wrt on it (if it supports it) and use one of the LAN ports as a WAN port but you'll get IPTV + random WAN traffic being flooded into your local LAN so I don't recommend that.

Hmm, I am thinking of the following connection scheme, if it works?

BTU <-> RJ45 ethernet cable(WAN port) <-> DIR-615 <->RJ45 ethernet cable (LAN port) <-> WAG120N <->wireless<-> PC/MAC

DIR-615 will be located at living room next to TV and my future iPTV, WAG120N also will be next to DIR-65 (I prefer to use WAG120N's wireless than DIR-615)

That will work but your WAG120N will only be acting as a wireless AP, not a router.. and you'll have to disable its DHCP server biggrin.gif

Yeah, I plan to upgrade from Streamyx Combo to UNIFI by end of the month, trying to scratch my head to maintain my WAG120N which just bought less than 6 months biggrin.gif

I have a Buffalo WHR-HP-300n wifi router, now with DD-WRT firmware, followed rizvanrp guide, and the internet works, minus IPTV ofcos. Its been working for 30mins, keeping my fingers cross that this setup will be stable. speedtest 4.6Mbps, VIP5. At least i have a working unifi access while waiting for TM to replace the dlink.

I have a broken d-link as well and thinking of buying the Buffalo WHR-HP-300n. Where did you buy it and for how much? Also, the dd-wrt firmware comes together bundled in the router right, as in you don't have to flash it first? Thanks for any replies. =)

Got it from All IT, less than 200. It doesn't come with dd-wrt, download from web, link from ddwrt.com router list. You got to change what version is availalble for the version of buffalo router. The original buffalo firmware gave me problem with wireless disconnecting. thought of getting rid of it, but now find a good use for it. i must say the dd-wrt firmware is awesome, the features are great.

Buying a cheap router which is dd-wrt compatible is a good temporary solution but remember, all dd-wrt routers do not perform the same way. Each firmware, model and hardware revision have their own bugs which you need to sort out yourself so I don't think anyone is ever going to find a permanent solution for dd-wrt with IPTV + Internet support. Even if they do, it will only be for a specific router model and routers get phased out/reach their final sales cycle within a couple of years.

I think the best solution in the end if you want a permanent replacement for the DIR-615 (if its failing) is to get a VLAN capable switch. This will handle IPTV + Internet fine and you'll be able to use any IP router regardless of whether is has dd-wrt installed or VLAN support itself.

Thanks for the advice! Which VLAN capable switch and IP router would you recommend? And the setup you mentioned above is using the IP router as a VLAN bridge right, with the switch connecting to the RJ11 and subsequently to the wall? (Sorry very noobie). =p

Right now, most people are using the VLAN bridging method which basically does this :

BTU <--> DIR-615 <--> Custom router + STB

The DIR-615 is completely unaware of the internet connection and only acts as a switch. If your DIR-615 is not damaged/bugged (like much of the new router stock is), this is the best method for you.

However, should your DIR-615 ever get damaged.. you can buy an actual VLAN switch to replace that DIR-615. Right now, you're basically exploiting the stock firmware to make the DIR-615 bridge a VLAN to a physical port.. but you can also buy a VLAN switch which is meant to do this. Some people have done this with the Cisco RVS4000 (which is actually meant to be a router and is quite expensive) but I'm very sure it can also be done with something cheaper like a Mikrotik RB250GS.

BTU <--> RVS4000 or RB250GS <--> Custom router + STB

Same thing, different hardware smile.gif
