I did asked for the wrought iron grilles, but their pricing were on the high side. At the end, I engaged Ivy from Three Kim for my gate and grilles. smile.gif
*
You asked 3 Kim install wrought iron grilles for your full house? Did they included any charges like installation, or transportation fees? How much did they charged you per sf ft on door & window grille, pls share ya rclxms.gif

I had ask on Delux per sq ft charges, expensive for me, with condition condominium surcharge RM300 , and if order below RM2,500.00 surcharge RM 250.00. Anyway, their design really nice, and make me dilemma whether wanna extra pay or not.

No installation charge or transportation fee. I opted for powder coated mild steel as my husband didn't like the flowery wrought iron. Quoted RM11.50 per sf for window and RM12.50 psf for sliding door, using flat bar.

I know a number of people got taken in by the special offer of 19rm/sq ' in home exhibitions to install polycarbonate skylight for their homes. The job was so badly done. Structure so flimsy had to be taken down. Few months later it was already rusting. Another friend of mine decided not to install after seeing the poor workmanship and she opted for the company to landscape her garden instead because she could not get a refund on her deposit. So beware! Don't put downpayment unless you really know what you are getting.

What it the price difference between hollow and solid WI and MS grille? Seldom I get people quating the solid one why?

Anyone mind to share pictures of WI and MS because I can't tell but just have to take it when the quoter say this is WI or MS. Can it tell by appearance?

Thank you  thumbup.gif

Wrought Iron is a common name for mild steel that looks like wrought iron.
Real wrought iron are those that you see in Buckingham palace and some very old bridges in London.
So essentially there is no such thing as wrought iron.
It is just mild steel bar, flat or round hammered into certain patterns to make it look like wrought iron.
Real wrought iron is resistant to rusting and need not be painted over.
That's why the WI you get needs to be painted with antique looking paint.
Most people cannot master the technique of painting it to look like its antique
And instead you get this horrible scribble of gold and black mix of paint.
Because they call it WI instead of mild steel they charge much higher.

bro...u got that right. there's no 'real' wrought iron in malaysia. even if there was it'll be too expensive to manufacture esp when grilles are very price sensitive products.

wrought iron in malaysia is derived from mild steel material which will be hammered to get that antique look. but bro you're mistaken when u say just because they call it 'wrought iron instead of mild steel they charge much higher'.

1st : there's extra cost of material (though not so much)
2nd :workmanship will be higher compared to MS cos more work in bending and welding the flowers
3rd : painting is more tedious process (normally 3 steps more than gloss paint) e.g. black base, antique color + clear coat

Rule of thumb is the choose more reputable companies ie Delux, Deskylight, CSA, etc during these exhibitions. Smaller companies might not be able to cope with in flux of sales, therefore bad installation as every job is 'touch and go'..

Your friends should complain to the vendor, the skylight should still be within the warranty period.

For Delux, it is giving me a 10 years warranty on the skylight, so I have no worries.. Next question: Will Delux still be around for the next 10 years? Yes, I think so..

Encountered 2 grille suppliers today.

I was looking for window grille.

Basically they say there are 2 types.

The Square 1/2 inch hollow steel tube , mainly basic cell like "square pegs design"
RM 8-9 per square feet

and

The "Wrought Iron" type, flowery design like those grass stem thingy.
RM 18 - 24 per square feet

Want to powder coat, add RM 3 per square feet.

What do you guys think of these price ???? hmm.gif

The hollow MS grill should be around RM 8 -9/ft2. This was the rate given to me by 3 contractors.
As for the wrought iron type, I don't have any info as I did not go for this.

I've just completed renovation works a few months ago and already moved in to my new house at seksyen 32, shah alam. But I'm not quite satisfied with the grille works by the contractor that i've hired

I'm planning to do some modifications to the existing grille e.g
1. add reinforcement tightening (maybe with bolts) because currently the grille is just placed with screws to the wall..i think not quite safe.

2. additional bars to existing grille at bathroom window and also rear wet-kitchen area (because there's an open space underneath the awning)

can anyone suggest me good grille suppliers? I'm tired of dealing with the previous supplier because they are very rude and always delay from schedule.

Hi, I had booked a contractor to do the grille for the whole house and they told me the package will include grille for all the ceiling manholes. My dilemma is, is it necessary to have grille at the ceiling manholes even though we already had alarm install to them? I had looked at their show house and didn’t like the look of grilles at the ceiling plus I’m worried it will be hindering when we wanna install walk-in-wardrobe below it.

Another problem is my bathroom has a window shaped like an upside down ‘L’ and it starts at waist level height. It’s near the shower area, about 1.3m distance facing the shower tap. The contractor told me they’ll install grille from the inside instead of outside, as the window is open outward type. Will the grille rust easily with this proximity from the shower tap? I did ask the contractor about my concerns but of course he’ll say no problem, no rust etc. Are there any other options?

BTW, we ordered for 6mm thickness normal grille, not powder coated nor galvanized.

If your alarm coverage include the ceiling, then the ceiling manholes would be secured by the alarm. If the burglar really want to enter your house, they could just easily break the ceiling. No need to locate your ceiling manhole.
But since your contractor is giving them FOC to you, why not take it. Additional protection.
But, bear in mind that having the grille at the ceiling manhole will not look nice, in my opinion.

Grille is the bathroom are subjected to moisture from the shower. Especially if you use the hot water frequently. Since you need the protection, why don't you get the contractor to put additional coating onto the grille before installing.
Get them to put a good primer before putting the finishing paint. Primer is important.

Equally important to ensure that all the gaps at the joints are fully seal up. This is to prevent the moisture from entering into the inside of the hollow sections, thus forming rust from within.

Thanks Kelvyn. I agree it looks ugly too so decided to ask the guy not to install the ceiling grille. But I think I'll keep the irons since already paid for it. Iron price is hiking up.

I'll ask the contractor about the additional coating.

Why do you want to keep those additional ceiling manhole grille?
Might as well ask for discount. If cannot, maybe get him to put additional coating on those bathroom grilles.

You need space to keep the manhole grille biggrin.gif

Grilles for a door and two windows will be replaced here (I'm in Penang). Quote I received is RM480 for the door grille and then RM980 for 2 windows. Will be using mild steel only. Thickness is 19mm x 19mm per sq. pipe.

weikee,
1. The mild steel swing gate is not powder coated or galvanised? It's about RM130 psf, so if it's powder coated, then it's a good deal.

2. Mild steel fencing - no comment, as I didn't do it

3. Mild steel door grille wt powder coated @ RM14 psft - I got mine at RM13.50 psf, using THK1.2 19mm

4 and 5 - no comment

6. Mild steel window grille wt powder coated and angle frame @ RM11 psf - Mine is RM11.50 psf, using THK1.2 19mm.

So, your pricing is not too bad.

Is it normal custom that the grille installer just suddenly call you and said they're outside your house and wanted to install the grille? When I booked for it, I told them I wanted the rectification of my new house done first, before starting the grille everything but now he keep on calling and calling and wanted to install them even without my presence. I wanted to be there to make sure the grille pattern and color is the right one before letting them install.
