Hi, I had booked a contractor to do the grille for the whole house and they told me the package will include grille for all the ceiling manholes. My dilemma is, is it necessary to have grille at the ceiling manholes even though we already had alarm install to them? I had looked at their show house and didn’t like the look of grilles at the ceiling plus I’m worried it will be hindering when we wanna install walk-in-wardrobe below it.

Another problem is my bathroom has a window shaped like an upside down ‘L’ and it starts at waist level height. It’s near the shower area, about 1.3m distance facing the shower tap. The contractor told me they’ll install grille from the inside instead of outside, as the window is open outward type. Will the grille rust easily with this proximity from the shower tap? I did ask the contractor about my concerns but of course he’ll say no problem, no rust etc. Are there any other options?

BTW, we ordered for 6mm thickness normal grille, not powder coated nor galvanized.

If your alarm coverage include the ceiling, then the ceiling manholes would be secured by the alarm. If the burglar really want to enter your house, they could just easily break the ceiling. No need to locate your ceiling manhole.
But since your contractor is giving them FOC to you, why not take it. Additional protection.
But, bear in mind that having the grille at the ceiling manhole will not look nice, in my opinion.

Grille is the bathroom are subjected to moisture from the shower. Especially if you use the hot water frequently. Since you need the protection, why don't you get the contractor to put additional coating onto the grille before installing.
Get them to put a good primer before putting the finishing paint. Primer is important.

Equally important to ensure that all the gaps at the joints are fully seal up. This is to prevent the moisture from entering into the inside of the hollow sections, thus forming rust from within.

Thanks Kelvyn. I agree it looks ugly too so decided to ask the guy not to install the ceiling grille. But I think I'll keep the irons since already paid for it. Iron price is hiking up.

I'll ask the contractor about the additional coating.
