Well, the current line from Arrandale isn't really optimized in their power consumption, so not much different from the c2d + gma4500mhd setup except in idle mode.
The Q2 Arrandale perhaps would give better battery life.

As for m11x, it uses ULV + gma to reach 6 hours, doubt i5/i7 + Intel HD can reach there tongue.gif

I'm not desperate yet... Hoping Dell would upgrade the SXPS's GPU, maybe when they refresh the SXPS 13...? Anyway, i'm willing to wait until June/July, so still a long way to go smile.gif

Hey guys. I am XPS 1647 user.

Anyone of you having issues when pressing "M" button?

I feel I have to press a bit harder, or else the computer wont register me pressing that letter.

Should I complain to Dell, since I got the laptop just a week ago.

No one knows for sure when or if Dell is going to refresh their GPU line up

But if u can play the waiting game, why not? icon_rolleyes.gif

Can't comment on this.Bear in mind Dell has just only switch from HD3670 to HD4670 not too long ago

Probably expect a few more months before they do.Like i said, if it isn't urgent to buy now, then playing the waiting game is certainly better smile.gif

Hmm, if the GC upgraded i dont think the price will the same. It might go a little higher.
If you really want to go for gaming Laptop. Just get an alienware. No worries.

Wait....

Today's price is RM3799.You upgraded 3GB>4GB and 320GB>500GB which will cost RM4178 blink.gif

Or you're using the old RM3599 price hmm.gif and got a discount which then cost RM3778

yeah, i use the old price le. cause before that i already ask the quotation lor. then that fellow reply me soooooo slow. 1 day 1 msg. so finally today only manage to deal.
actually is worth to buy at RM 3599. i think is best jor with this type of sepc and brand. Compare to BenQ s57 , alot people mention is good and worth.
But now XPS 16 with RM 3599, is more worth! =D
In my opinion no point waiting for new GPU to come out, the price for sure is RM 4 k above.

Unomi....you're kinda lucky in a way since u ordered your SXPS 16 before RM3599>RM3799.I wanted to buy the RM3599 the next day but found out it had already change to RM3599 mad.gif after 12am blink.gif So i immediately sent an email to the Sales Agent telling them of my problem. She told me that i could still get the RM3599 price even though the promotion is already over sweat.gif Then she gave me the quotation form and after that, i asked for a discount and freebies brows.gif although i know chances are slim since she gave me a price when the promo is already over blush.gif She said no discount and no freebies sad.gif

Sigh...

nod.gif RM3599 is already a very good price for the Studio XPS 16.After the P8700 is phased out...most likely the i5-430M(RM4199) will stay there for some time.Just like the RM2699(T6600) and RM3299(P8700) of the Studio 15 line which now has already been replaced by the i5 series staring minimum at RM3299 for i5-430M

Btw, when's yours coming thumbup.gif

That's ram sharing, the gpu already have 1gb. Even sharing the performance won't be good.

Fantasia is just curious smile.gif

But the thing now is whether you'll be utilizing the total 8GB ram which in most cases,NO.4GB is definitely more than enough for a normal user to handle nod.gif

you sure extra RM 50? or you still got upgrade other system? Usually it depends on how much you upgrade and total up and they will give certain rate of discount only. I heard from people is based on 5% discount on the unit price which include upgrade. But what i think, usually they will give discount based on how much you upgrade ( 30-40 % discount) for upgrade price only. Doesnt include the normal package. For instant, If your total upgrade cost is RM 1500, maybe you will get a discount of RM 600. In My opinion la.

hmmm... dunno, but that time i bought my unit right, rm7000 if thru online... but they discount for me from the warranty... only rm 6400, your point should be right also~
cuz i upgrade lots... processor, rgbled screen, ram, hard disk, wi-fi card, and warranty...

but their service very good, even my screen got 1 dead pixel, they still change for me. 2nd, i told them my fan got bit sound, they change a fan and heat sink for me~

@ , @ . So what is the actual base price for the laptop? without the upgrade?
Mine sharing your spec. =D

Dell warranty is the best ma.
Yup, this major problem will only happen in the 1st year, maybe is assembling problem or manufacture issue .
But if you used for a year without problem, i guess nothing will happen in the future except you used it hardcore. Lol

wow. i bought this laptop i guess 8 months ago. i think it just launched not long ago. comes with 2.4c2d and 3670. it was damn awesome for me. guess what 2 weeks later. new BIOS supporting new 4670... pricing was getting lower and lower with better specs. just realised these are the IT stuff. =\ felt so sad. by the way, i had some lags of playing games, mine was just 3GB, i never experience any lags when i just installed the game, few weeks later there are obvious lags. i planned to upgrade the RAMs to 4GB and get a better RAM (i suspect the RAMs might malfunctioning) my friend said using 2 exact same RAM would be running on dual channel which is faster. is that true? I don't know anything about the RAM brands and types, any guidance?

Slimmer screen? It's the future of panels rclxms.gif Notice the word "concept" brows.gif

Expect around 2012/2013 once manufacturers manage to reduce the prices of OLED panels. And then, OLED will take the market by storm rclxms.gif

Its because the i-series have two cores (cpu + iGPU) now rather than one core in the c2d

thx kytz, really appreciated.

screen looks awsome. haha.

after search, I see that P-series have at most 25W TDP, Tseries 35W, compared to i5 and i7 mobile have the most 35W TDP.

so, in general, the TDP doesnt change as much. I can safely say that dell doesn't need to redesign, but If they can improve, then why not?

It means it would need max of energy to dissipate the heat....
25W vs 35 W in idle is almost the same temp
while on load, 25W will be cooler....
Though this still depends, because each chip is not built the same, if one chip is 26W, its labeled as 35W while the one is 24W, its labeled as 25W, so it doesn't realy mean 25W is much cooler than the one labeled 35W....

Hey all, how long have Studio SXPS 16 been ?

is it going to refresh anytime soon ?

what graphic card is it using ? I can't see it through the website -,-

Anyway, its quite good for performance-price ratio.

*anybody here has MacBook and SXPS ? Is the Screen almost the same? I mean the definition and the "glossyness" of the screen.

Hmmm, even it changed is GPU . Do you think the price will be the same?

Just like studio 15 , they already cancel of the intel core2duo edition which is cost RM 2699. Now a cheapest studio 15 which is cost RM 3300?
So im just wondering, will dell clear off xps 16 for its core2duo which is cost Rm 3699.

Cause last week, the price of a XPS 16 was RM 3599 and it 3 days later they rise back the price to RM 3799. Or maybe in the future XPS 16 wont be selling below 4k?

Yeah, the current XPS 16 already satisfied me. With the current Style, Price, and Spec. I would say XPS 16 is my 1st choice.
No point waiting for new GPU , i bet the price wont be the same. =D

Yup, if those with budget below RM 4k. Suggest better get it now, i think you can get from SA RM 3599. If the New GPU is out , maybe the cheapest model of XPS 16 will be RM 4k+?
Now Xps Core i5 cheapest model is already selling at RM 4199? thats like Rm500 differents. @ , @

iirc RM4199 was the price when they first launch the SXPS 16 starting with P8600 and HD3670 laugh.gif

RM3599 is quite a bargain already nod.gif My advice is, who ever wants to get it at RM3799..please do so now before the 11th of February(that's when the RM200 expires) smile.gif

Yeah kytz was right. If your budget is below Rm 4k below and you really want a dell XPS 16. Better get now, cause the price really drop and it is cheap in terms in spec ,brand and price.

the best candidate is ATi 5770. looking back from xps timeline, dell seems like to use the XT part of GPU.

xps 15 series used 8600GT, then upgrade to 3670 (M86XT) then 4670 (M96XT). the best candidate is using madison-XT chip, which is 5770 or 5750.

hmm i feel like getting the laptop now itself, don't wanna wait again despite the gpu refresh. im not a heavy gamer anyway, only play games like dragon age and rpg games, no fps or any of the sort. so the HD 4670 would be sufficient, no?

really suffice, but nowdays RPG itself have lots of games. new RPG sure is berat one. but for 2-3 years, I think its ok.

I play RTS a lot, so to speak. my 4570 is too underpowered to run anything with med settings. now have to cope with low settings. haha.

Hey guys, jz want to know about the BIOS.
I still using A10, while the driver support now release A12 already.
But i searched forum outside, many ppl complain this A12 got problem, that will makes your whole laptop need to be send to factory to fix.
Does anyone try it upgrade your BIOS b4? From A10 -> A12..???
Need to really confirm this statement before doing BIOS upgrade on my XPS 16.

Definitely can handle those games medium/high details.Get it while its cheap now at RM3799 or else you wanna fork out another RM200 unnecessarily?

Anyway,to spice things up,Studio XPS 16 can be destribed to be a "perfect" laptop - top notch build quality and design and excellent specifications(4670+P8700/i5/i7).What more could u want? sweat.gif

agree with you kytz. as long as you take care of your unit well, it will serve you well also. few OCs, heavy games wont hurt much. but if you plan to play games heavily, i would suggest a desktop.

Like mine, I plan to do a full skin cover/guard. Know any product that specifically caters this? I know InvisiShield for Handphones/smartphones.

the throttling issue, I think dell is releasing new power brick and new BIOS for that, as what I've read in outside forum. norebookreviu i think.

processor. It is that when we use the 4 cored i7, the power is not within the 90W limit the power brick support, so the processor itself will limit the power usage by tuning down the multiplier. and the result, from usual 1.6GHz dropped to 933MHz. huge loss.

to use the 130W adapter, the BIOS must be correct also, if not, the XPS motherboard just draws 90W worth of power

lol. the only customization I did was to replace the default 6 cell battery for 9cell battery, and the delivery was pushed from 6/2 to 12/2. it also depends on stock, not case of default or not.... haih~

guys, I usually used the Jack Sparrow version of Win 7 ultimate. now by deciding to opt for dell, I notice it have ori windows 7 home premium. from what I read, Remote Desktop Connection only client version only. can somebody confirm this? I really used a lot of RDP, sometimes from my desktop to my laptop, vice versa.

if cant have RDP, I might reformat the dell to install my Jack Sparrow ultimate. or anyone knows any bypass or hack?

for sxps the 3 year extension is RM577, though there's the DellCarePlus which i think includes 2 years CC is about RM289.

unless you're talking about after sales extension, the SA told me that it would cost about RM500+ a year.

DELL will refresh GPU in March, not sure about the exact date, GPU will be better compare to the current ATI 4670, according to my SA. I already cancelled my order since there is delay on my customized system - RGBLED screen part shortage. Other who is not rushing to get a new laptop, can hold your order till March. smile.gif

The power adapter issue, my SA said that there is no 130W adapter available in Malaysia, if browse to DELL US, there is no option to order 130W adapter either. She also said there will be Bios update to solve the issue. Not sure how true is that. hmm.gif

I found Dell 130W and 150W adapter, both super big size, price RM 220-250. Used item i guess, from XPS 1730M and M2120 or sumthing. Tot of gettin for my XPS 16 but dell can't deliver my order b4 Feb so I have to wait. Getting a bigger Wattage adapter won't hurt ur lappie, it's the same as getting a higher wattage PSU for ur PC, if the need to draw more current, the adapter will supply, better than having a lower wattage adapter and can't sustain the draw hence end up in smoke.

The reason dell didn't include a higher wattage could be due to cost, or the size of those adapters, it's damn big, almost like a brick. shocking.gif. Another possible reason could be their tech ppl dun wanna admit their mistake for assuming a 90w adapter is more than enough for their XPS 16 systems. doh.gif

Do note that that's if u make loads of noise, writing loads of letters, e-mails, calling up their complaints dept. to get such offers. XPS 1730M to Alienware M17X is very very very good offer. Not everyone manage to get those "upgrade" there's alot more have issues still pending and can't get their "upgrade" due to certain policies such as location, diff SA, diff customer relation officer.

cool2.gif Afterall it's Malaysia, we can't expect same "upgrade" given to everyone.

also, the installment plans have 0% interest so you can choose either 6 months installment or 12 months installment at no extra charge than the price quoted, unless you live in east malaysia or something.

Positive it'll be out in march?
*
Very positive, actually I already paid for the previous customized system which I cancel the order, now DELL holding up the payment till March for the new GPU instead of arranging a refund.

There is a forumer saying that DELL Canadian has actually once allow user to customize SXPS 16 with ATI 5730 in January, but it's a mistake for DELL Canadian to post up the system because actually they don't have any stock for ATI 5730 yet and end up this forumer downgraded the GPU to ATI 4760.

Referring to the product website: ATI 5730, looks like a promising GPU with support of DirectX 11 but with lower clock speed of 650Mhz compare with 675Mhz for ATI 4670. Newer technology which is 40nm (5730) compare to 55nm (4760), thus, power consumption is lower, 26W (5730) compare to 35W (4730). Specification can be found on notebookcheck.net.

Maybe due to power throttling issues that happening worldwide make DELL to refresh to a newer GPU with lower power consumption.

nod.gif Yea ... totally agree with you ... maybe for the leather part we have to be extra cautious ... we need to always "polish" it with leather cleaner ... But for the glossy white cover, I believe that we should not to be so worry as it will be easier to take care by just simply using a damp micro fiber cloth to clean it up ... For instance, my alpine white Dell Inspiron 1420 which I do not need much care for it and it still looks brand new for me .... hehehe biggrin.gif
Actually, the main reason why I love glossy white cover laptop is due to the finger prints prone problem which almost all the glossy black cover laptops share the same problem ... no offense laugh.gif

I dunno why, now after a good night sleep. and different lighting, the leather part doesnt look that much of a pink, but more like darker pink.

later this day, I'll post up another batch of pics. for now, I must go to Muar, a family gathering. suppose I am not following, but my sister cancel last minute (just 30 mins ago) i must go.

maybe the quality of my compact camera is not so good compared to Nikon D90 + Studio class lighting.... that is why my pics looks pinkish....

both my old Asus K50 and this new XPS is fingerprint magnet.

the flash of my compact really make the leather part look pink. and also, at night, with my stupid light(lampu kalimantang 6 years old) the bottom part look pink. lolz. under normal sunlight, it doesnt look that of a pink.

I dont care, next time I go to public place, I will dress also like Günther.

I think what I do is maybe use a sticker or any other skin to cover up the pink part. the red hot will speak for themselves.

Now currently I'm doing some partitioning. Gonna resize the partition accordingly, coz 1 big chunk is not what I like to see in my lappy.

planned to also resize the recovery partition, coz it is using 15GB size, but actual usage is only around 5GB. so gonna shrink it to 8 GB, that means 3GB headroom for whatever reason dell wanna use it. I always have drive D that is larger than my C, coz my media files is quite large.

Benchie wont be coming up soon, coz I dunno why, 3dmark06 wont start. the same installer can be use in my desktop 32bit ultimate, but this 64bit home premium wont start, files missing etc... maybe i should get the newer 3dmarkvantage.

those were the real time unboxing pics. if you want, I can go to my office studio (after CNY) and do a mock full video unboxing. coz I dont have any camera stand.

I'm still using the old acronis boot cd for all my partition creation, managing, resizing, copying, etc... still rules. hope dell doesnt have any stupid proprietary format for their hdd, or this will take up whole day....

QUOTE(xKAIZERUx @ Feb 14 2010, 08:36 AM)

*
plz send me the 3dmarkvantage download link ok icon_rolleyes.gif

Affirmative. I do agree that Dell Studio XPS 16 is good enough for doing some "harsh" works outside there ... I really love this machine but unfortunately not my time yet to change to another new laptop ... cry.gif In term of new GPU, I'm really curious with the upcoming one & I heard from other LY forumers that it might arrives at Malaysia after CNY ...

yup, that's what the SA told me, of course dell has have a return policy. most companies do. smile.gif

and yes, i believe it would be time consuming since i think you have to send the laptop back yourself which means through postage. but if it means that much to you, wouldn't be a problem.

@@, my laptop is coming on 18/2 another 3 more days.
But i dont plan to return, how much different the GPU can be?
Cause i think i bought it at a very cheap price, base on the current price in Dell web now. I already got a discount of RM 400 with a free backpack.
Which is cost RM 3778. Original cost now was RM 4178.
Good Deal i guess , if i refund it now although i get a new GPU but i already wasted $$$, and time.

Maybe to get a new XPS 16, i would need to pay Extra RM 300-400+ include penalty cost and postage.

which is why we'd never know, the gpu would probably be the ATI 5000 series, it supports DX11 and is a generally better gpu than the HD 4670. however, the HD4670 is still a great GPU and definitely not obsolete. DX11 is not in full motion support since it's rather new i believe, and unless you're a graphics whore you wouldn't really be concerned. I believe that if your laptop specs fit your necessity, there's no need to return your laptop.

in my opinion, dell studio xps is not meant for gaming.. it is for some light gaming, not hardcore gaming or long hours gaming.
even though the graphics and cpu is there, but what about the heat sink and cooling system?
smile.gif
correct me if im wrong..

studio xps gets heat up to maximum 105 degree celcius after gaming for 30 miniutes (total war). tat was my frens studio xps. it was scary >.<

it not a gaming laptop. if you want to gaming a lot, go for Alienware. Studio XPS is put under multimedia Laptop. I know it sounds weird but it is.

3 days worth of usage, I did notice the heat can rather get pretty annoying. My Asus K50 (which uses AMD) is far more cooler. Yes man. it is cooler. not the tech thingy(which you use software to check), but me as a user itself. The palm rest is hot really hot when gaming. but my asus palmrest remain cool in gaming, in fact cooler than my hand even. and if I do some browsing and chatting on the net, usually i would let my laptop rest onto my lap (hence the name laptop ) and the heat form this XPS is annoying....

the keyboard sometime gets hot too. under game. the K50 hot place is only at the top part (above the keyboard) and the bottom part. This XPS gets hot all over the place.

his gpu reach 105 and after that burnt... xD
i think his heatsink got problem.. cuz he hardcore gamer, everyday gaming for 2 - 3 hours liddat.

now his laptop screen blackout , cannot switch on edi.. mayb motherboard also sot liaw.. so moral is, don take ur laptop for hardcore gaming... really kills it ...

Added on February 15, 2010, 10:25 amyeap, if u wanna go for gaming, don just look at the gpu that the laptop can offer, go for some heat sinking technology built for the laptop.
i went for m11x cuz my budget under 4k and lookin for a gaming laptop which does not heat up like crazy T.T

i have considered studio xps once, but after seeing my fren's xps hot like hell, i scared edi.

m11x didn offer a good cpu, but its gpu is decent enough for u to last at least 1 to 1.5 years from now.

smile.gif

cpu wise, i think su7300 is not bad for that 6hours of battery life. in fact, su7300 is actually quite a good proc edi.

for me the external speaker is better compared to my Asus K50, the obvious thing is this XPS got its own subwoofer, and i can certainly feel it.

now you know how much I want to bang my head up to a wall last 2 week. 29th jan order, 12th feb got. 15 days!!!!

just realized that this xps have infrared, and also 3g/hsdpa optional. 1 extra mini pcie wwan slot, 2 more antenna wire, and also, if we remove the battery, we can see the sim card slot.

with all this feature, i think the money i spend is well worth it...

hmm.gif My Dell Inspiron 1420 also have the S.I.M card slot underneath the battery slot which I never tried before. Actually, how we can utilize this slot? We only have to slot in our S.I.M card into it and then what will happen next? Is it we can surf internet via the S.I.M card if my S.I.M card does support & includes 3G/HSDPA? rclxub.gif

nothing will happen if we just blindly insert sim card there. sweat.gif we must have the 3G/HSDPA WWAN card also properly installed and configured. there are a software that will handle all the DATA calls and modem configuration.

and also, we must also have an active 3G/HSDPA account. wink.gif

it's a thermal paste. it's used to cool ur processor down(i think can use on GPU also). u need to detach the heat sink in order to apply the paste on it.

I can safely said the thermal paste I used cooled a lot. i remember that normal working temp , which is firefox open 3 windows, about 10 tab each, 4-5 MS word, winamp, usual task, before I fired up my Adobe suite.
Attached Image

before the temp is at least 52C. so this cools the system a lot.

cool.. you give me the inspiration to change my 6935g's thermal paste too tongue.gif

well, I advise you to check first your laptop condition, see the screws and formulate the best way to do this without scratching anything, coz takut the Acer see and then viod your warranty. I used the Zalman coz after comparing the heat transfer rate. it cost almost the same as the highest Cooler Master offering but the performance is a lot more.

good luck! cool2.gif

I applied to all that come in contact to the copper. both die at CPU chip (why the hell Dell disable the intel GMA although it clearly have this?), and also at the GPU.

click the addreply button, then below the emoticon thing, got attachments place. browse for your pic there. I suggest you resize them first, I always used 1024 as the width. much better for web as it offers quite fast load while still legitable.

Yea...what are you guys using to cover the speaker holes and the battery hole(when u take out the battery). Was thinking of using wrapping paper(the ones to wrap school books tongue.gif )

And use cellophane tape? shocking.gif Or gum? shakehead.gif

And also planning to cover all the glossy areas asap...perhaps using screen protector...something thin and stick on-don't need gum or whatsoever to stick it

Yes you are one in a million rclxms.gif But i think defective also chose red right?

Edit:My right speaker is spoiled!!!Initially i thought it was just too soft so i increased the left side balance but still the same. Finally i off the right hand side(set it to 0),the sound remains the same which concludes that my right speaker is spoiled mad.gif

Any of you guys facing the same problem? cry.gif

And yeah...why doesn't HWMonitor show my GPU temp hmm.gif
