3. Samsung CS29Z30MQ - it's PQ is quite impressive but found out in this forum that ssung might hv problems. I think this is the latest model so i still can't find the specs. Currently priced @ RM1,730.
The latest model for Samsung Slimfit is the Z40 series where they now supports 720p/1080i in NTSC, and includes HDMI port for the widescreen model. Previously they only support hdtv res in PAL format. icon_rolleyes.gif

select the component2(vga) input.. set my pc resolution to the recommended reso in the manual.. then the tv say video mode not supported.. then i press AV button on the remote to select source again.. to my amazement.. although the vga input is called component2.. i browse further down, got another input call PC-VGA..which is the same port as component2... i change to that.. then walla.. 1280X1024 .. 1280X800.. no problem already..

try checking ur input.. thats how i solve on my phillips.. dunno bout urs though..

but damn... xbox 720P is awesome... ps2 put 480p.. some games are good.. some..JAGGIES .. tongue.gif

I was browsing at Courts Mammoth and saw this TV:

Samsung LCD HDTV 32"
Model: LA32S71B
Price: RM 4,600 ++.

Got that "GAME MODE", is it a mode to disable the Dnie chip so less lag? Anyone got the tv can give full review?

I am looking at LA32R71B instead. Looks better than the S7 and has 5000:1 contrast ratio compared to 3000:1 (S7). The R7 cost around RM4998 in leading stores and someone in LYN bulking it for RM4500.

LA32S71B

LA32R71B

Any users of R7 here can give feedback it? I'm planning to use it for xbox360 and future ps3.

Sony Bravia S Series 32" cost almost 6k and has Astro enhancement mode. Did not see how good the enhancement though. Any 1 uses sony S series here? Might giving some feedbacks.

Thanks thumbup.gif

Bear in mind the Samsung LCD sets feature DYNAMIC contrast ratio, not static. So while theoretically the set can reach 5000:1 contrast ratio, it won't be all the time. Usually it'll scale from 800 to 1200 and onwards depending on the source material. If contrast ratio truly is important to you I would suggest getting a fixed ratio monitor like the Sharp Aquos. Even at 1200:1 it's amazing.

QUOTE
Dynamic contrast ratio

It is also common to market only the dynamic contrast ratio capability of a display (when it is better than its static contrast ratio), which should not be directly compared to the static contrast ratio. A plasma display with a static 5000:1 contrast ratio will show superior contrast to an LCD display with 5000:1 dynamic and 1000:1 static contrast ratio when the input signal contains full range of brightnesses from 0 to 100% simultaneously. However they will be on par when input signal ranges only from 0 to 20% brightness.
from wikipedia.

As for Sony's Astro enhancement mode, I personally find that it doesn't really add much to the image as compared to Philips Pixel Plus technology. YMMV though so make sure you check it out properly before buying.

If you disable the dynamic contrast it SHOULD default to the lowest available contrast ratio (which can be anywhere from 500 to 1000:1)

I sort of overlook the DYNAMIC when looking at the specs. Not that I know what DYNAMIC contrast would mean. Thanks for your explanation Lord_Ashe.

What's ur opinion on Samsung 32R7 compared to Sharp Aquos with fixed contrast ratio.

eone: I think you're referring to general contrast settings on your Tv.

terencey: Well I've been hanging around Best Denki for a while comparing general image quality - and I have to say that for the money the Samsungs are a good investment. However I tend to side toward the Sharp Aquos for these reasons:

1) dual HDMI - while I am not a fan of HDCP, I guess dual HDMI out of the box will be useful

2) 6ms response time - self explanatory I think

3) general image quality

4) 1200:1 contrast ratio

Bear in mind that I can't vouch for Astro performance on it since it doesn't have a proprietary processing engine (like Philips) but switch your Astro to S-video and there should be a jump to cleaner images.

First question: Your guess is as good as mine my friend, although I suspect Sony will release the first batch just in time for the PS3. Ditto for the price - at the moment these 1080p TVs are so rare I can only guess it's gonna cost at least as much as the 42" Philips LCD with Pixel Plus 3 HD (RM 17k) and that set's ONLY 1080i capable. As for screen size, my prediction is that you'll see anything from 32" to 70" out in the market - especially to entrap the unsuspecting buyer into purchasing since at sizes below 45" I personally don't think you can tell the difference between i and p.

i = stands for interlaced, where each line is drawn on screen alternately and p = progressive where a full image is drawn each time. Due to the many flavours of 1080p available (1080p/24/60 etc) only one thing is certain: producing 1080p images takes a whole lot of processing power and when we FINALLY see a native 1080p TV (as discussed above) some previous HDTV owners may be angry to realise their sets don't actually support 1080p.

the new REGZA's (42" and 47") have native 1920 x 1080 panels.Im not sure to whether it will accept 1080p directly but it does deinterlace 1080i sources to 1080p.Sony's XBR2 and XBR3 BRAVIA sets are also arriving soon in Malaysia and asia pacific. These sets offer 1080p 24/60 inputs directly making it fully futureproof.Sony's Ruby and Pearl (due to arrive sometime this year)accept 1080p inputs,1080p60 and 1080p 24/48/60 respectively. They also deinterlace 1080i sources BEAUTIFULLY.Panasonic's 1080p VIERA sets just arrived in the states. We might see it here in 2007 Q1/Q2 though.VIERA's arent cheap even the current 42" ones are about 17-20k.This is probably because they have high contrast ratios and colours superior to others, probably in the same league as Pioneer and Hitachi.

Most people however, are not aware whether or not their sets accept 1080p directly.Toshiba's rear projection TVs with DLP's xHD4 chips have a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 but only accepts 720p/1080i inputs through its digital inputs. It however,is able to deinterlace 1080i sources.

It will be quite sometime till 1080p sets arrive here.Even when it arrives, most people might not have the money to buy it.Sony's 40" and 46" BRAVIA sets might cost about *RM13999 and *RM15999 respectively.Their VPL-VW100 Ruby projector costs RM32999 here and I estimate the VPL-VW50 Peral to cost *RM17999.

However,it may be hard to differentiate between 720p/1080i and 1080p on sets below 45".It may be slightly better though.

When the time comes.1080p might be very very useful.

*Estimates only.

Amazon does not ship electronics outside of its region, eg. Amazon.com does not ship outside continental America, the same with Amazon.co.uk and such.
