no need lah. you can have it. but since you are already in australia. your uni will be giving you their university student card. it is valid all over australia. the ISIC is not that special over there. when i was there. only ISIC purchased in australia worked. the one i registered in malaysia was not accepted. so stooopid. dunno if its still like that. and also as an international student we cant even get discount on public transport. well in victoria anyway. which sucks. only locals get the discounts
With that student card, do I still need to bring my passport around? So that just in case police ask for identification, is the student card good enough?? Anyway, I will be studying in melb, I'm now visiting perth since my sister is here. lols...thx anyway

I've never had the police stop me for identification (then again I've been sober most of the time), but for general identification a student card should suffice. My bank accepts it when I do transactions.

For proof of age through, a student card is not enough. You need either:
a) a AUSTRALIAN drivers license (note that the Malaysian drivers license does not have your DOB), or
b) your passport, or
c) a 18+ card. Different states have different 18+ cards, so if you need more information go to the International student services of your university and ask for more information. They're not free.

keep in mind when you go drinking/clubbing/the casino.

I beg to differ. I came to Perth using Royal Brunei and they gave me 10KG extra for being a student. They even let me through when me and my cousin's luaggage was overweight by 4KG. You need to tell them beforehand that your a student.

hmm...i transit from sg to melbourne with qantas airway and they offer me 30kg because i showed them that i m student
*
I stand corrected. I've never had the luck of extra 10KG with these airlines, but obviously it does happen.

Just to clarify so I can edit the front page: what do you actually do to get the extra 10KG? Show them you are a student during booking, or at the check-in counter, or both? And what documentation do you show: COE, Student visa, or what?

QUOTE(stevenchang @ Feb 5 2009, 02:28 AM)
If I join the SAM intake on March, it will just be 8 months study. An intensive one. Will it be tough? I heard my seniors saying that cramming all the subjects in 8 months is hell of a roller coaster ride. They actually had a hard time too even though they joined the Jan intake. Covering all the assignments, projects, and examinations in just 8 months. I wonder how to. I do not feel like taking STPM or A levels cause the duration of the time is too long. A levels is expensive as well and I'm planning to further my studies in Aus in the future.

Will I just managed to pass or will I pass it with flying colours if I take SAM? I'm not a genius, just an average student who had just finished his SPM.

Any opinions? Am I having the wrong perception on this matter? Can anyone tell me more?

Besides, if I do take SAM. Means I can only further my studies in universities in Southern Australia? And whats the difference between SAM and AusMat?

I'm confused.

Your help would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks.

where are u studying? and what course?
*
When I did SAM a long time ago, there were no March intakes lol... Back then we would finish the syllabus and whatever coursework/projects by August and have 2 months of chillout revision time. So practically speaking, 8 months is sufficient for you to finish your course albeit not having as much revision period as we did last time.

SAM ain't that hard, in fact it's probably one of the most easiest pre-U course you'll be able to take. Your assignments and coursework are vital as they carry approx half of your marks - nail them and you'll be OK.

Your SAM results will be converted into the TER score for university enrollment in all Australian universities, not just South Aust. AustMat is generally used in Western Aust, eg Perth while SAM is for SA eg Adelaide... Victoria uses VCE... not sure about Queensland, NSW and NT. The examinations are in a different format and marked by different boards although students probably learn similar stuff. As mentioned before, whatever examinations that you take will be converted into TER for a standardised score.

If you want to take SAM, by all means go ahead... Don't worry too much about it. There has been many examples where "average" SPM students obtain good results in SAM; while good SPM students flunked SAM because they didn't study or became parasites of cybercafes and so on. Another thing though, make sure you know what subjects are required for your desired undergraduate course. Then choose them once you enrol in SAM. For example, most if not all engineering courses require Specialist Mathematics while many medical courses don't care about Biology.

Good luck.

yeah. if you dont plan to get a aussie drivers license the 18+ card is the next best thing. i think its called keypass if im not mistaken. not sure about the name. but you can apply for it at the police station. they need your photos and to see your passport. then they can validate it. quite dangerous to be bringing your passport everywhere.

SAM and AusMat is like the same thing. Both are recognised all over Australia, and even all over the world too. Its just 2 different programmes. Its a business strategy thingie imo.

And also, yeah, SAM is probably the easiest Pre-u around. When I compared my A Level math with SAM's specialist math, w00t. Hell of a difference. Like SAM's spec math only covered half of what we covered. SAM won't kill you.

Wow. That's really a very helpful information. Thanks guys. I'm planning to do econs and finance or maybe accounts and finance for my undergrad studies. Can tell me what subjects should I take in SAM? Any tips? Cause I could see college like Taylors and INTI offering a few kind of arts package for business studies. And all of subjects are closely matched with perhaps one or two subjects differences.

Besides that, have you guys heard of twinning program? A program where you study a few years in Malaysia and the final year in Aus. Like 1+2 or 2+1? I have been doing some research on those unis website and I realized that not many offer this program. I'm thinking that twinning program would be a good one as studying in Aus for my whole degree course will seriously burn a big hole in my dad's pocket!! So, yea. I need advices and opinions from everyone on this as well.

Sorry for asking so many questions. I did do my research on the internet but I still have doubts. So, this forum would definitely serve as the best place for me to answer the questions that I have.

Anyway, thanks a lot. Appreciate that. =)

sam is based, as the name indicates, on the south australian school syllabus, and ausmat as people understand it here, ie the sunway ausmat is based on the western australia school syllabus......

each individual states in oz have significant autonomy, including education, so each state runs it's own schools and unis......eg. nsw and victoria has the hsc.....

these results from different schools, regions, states, and then collated and moderated, to come up with a national percentile TER score (called enter in vic, uac in nsw).......

and no, sam is not the easiest pre-u.......that distinction belongs to cpu.....canadian pre-u......

cheap ones approx 12-15, reaching 20... more fancy hairdressers probably around 30. You want stylish one then pay more loh... pretty much same as M'sia, just dollar-to-dollar.

It's better to get the information from whatever university that you're interested in. Different universities may have different requirements for same/similar courses so it's hard for us to provide any recommendations on subjects.

And you might find more information regarding universities/academics/administration from education institutions eg AusEd or IDP. Or just email the respective universities instead. Things change over time and some of us here (eg me who did SAM far too long ago) may accidentally provide outdated information.

Twinning programmes are pretty common nowadays as various local institutions would offer such courses. Again, it's best to consult education institutions or your college's placement centres for accurate information, plus the various education fairs that'll pop up during the year. There's usually one around mid year where universities would waive the application fees, so go for it. Furthermore during those fairs the foreign universities would frequently send their representatives to answer any inquiries directly.

Should you decide to take SAM it shouldn't be that much of a problem compared to uni life. But it's best to have a couple of desired courses and destinations in mind before choosing a pre-U.

Cheers.
