Introduction

Announced at Nokia's Remix event in London, at the beginning of

October 2008, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a mid-range, music focused

phone, running S60 5th Edition on Symbian OS 9.4, with a 3.2 megapixel

camera, integrated GPS, WiFi and HSDPA connectivity, and a 3.2 inch

touch screen. It's the last item on this feature list which draws

attention to what would otherwise be a fairly standard mid range phone.

For the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is one of Nokia's most widely talked

about (and leaked) phones of recent memory. There's no doubt that it is

going to garner attention, coming in the wake of the recent spate of

touch phones, including, of course, the Apple iPhone. While it's not

Nokia's first touch phone (Nokia 7700/7110) or its first recent touch

device (Nokia N810), it is the first S60 touch enabled phone and is a

significant landmark in Nokia's mobile device story. However, it is

worth noting from the start that it is not "Nokia's touch phone",

instead it is the first in a portfolio of touch enabled phones from

Nokia. This is an important distinction because, while the 5800 can

tell us much about Nokia's touch platform generally, it can only be

fairly assessed in the context of its own market positioning (music

focused, cost of 279 Euro before taxes and subsidies).

General Design and Hardware

The 5800, at 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, is a reasonably small

package. It is similar in size to the N78 (113 x 49 x 15.1 mm), but

slightly heavier at 109g versus 102g. Volume wise, the 5800 is bigger

at 83 cc compared to the N78 at 76.5 cc; it does feel bigger in the

hand, mainly due to the greater taper on its edges. While the 5800 is

significantly bigger than the typical mid-range phone and would do well

to be thinner, it compares favourably to other smartphones and does not

feel over sized.

Thanks to its relatively narrow width it is, proportionally, closer to

the traditional candy bar shape (long rectangle) than most touch screen

based phones (short rectangle). If you think of your typical candybar

smartphone, remove the keypad and lengthen the screen and you'll get

pretty close to the feel of the 5800. The key advantage of this shape

is that, for most people, it will be possible to use the device with

just one hand; even those with smaller fingers should be able to reach

all points on the screen.

user posted image

The 3.2 megapixel camera focuses well and takes great pictures

in daylight -- indoors is likely a different story, as with most

cameraphones, but there's a rather powerful dual LED flash to help out

with that.

user posted image

All of this -- in addition to things like GPS, WiFi and a side

-loading microSD slot (there's a free 8GB card included) -- are wrapped

up into an elongated, chubby package, hence the Tube moniker. We'd hate

to have something of its shape and thickness in a tight jeans front

pocket on a regular basis, but we must admit that it's very comfortable

to hold and use with a single hand, something that can't be said for

all touchscreen phones.

Software

It's S60, so if you were hoping for something else you'll be

sorely disappointed. Nokia's done "just enough" to turn the traditional

interface into a touchable one with version 5.0, sizing up icons,

adding finger-friendly buttons in lieu of traditional menu items and so

forth. What Nokia hasn't quite figured out is consistency, requiring

double taps in some places, single taps in others. Scrolling through

most lists requires dragging a scroll bar, pulling down as the list

flies up, but the browser has touch and drag scrolling. Nothing's too

frustrating or unreasonable, but this is no seamless experience.

user posted image

What's new is a touch-sensitive button above the screen that

drops down the Media Bar for access to music, movies, photos, the

browser and sharing. Not life changing, but quite convenient. There's

also a new home screen with a "Fav Four" of sorts across the top and

little else. Tap that friend, and you can get a quick look at recent

calls, messages and even related RSS feeds. Pretty neat if you're a

loner, but there's no way to add more than four friends, or view

similar info for your regular contacts that don't make the cut.

Luckily, the traditional S60 home screen is also available.

user posted image

For text input you have four options: handwriting, mini QWERTY

keyboard, full screen QWERTY and alphanumeric keypad. The first two are

stylus-based (that mini QWERTY is truly mini), while the other two are

only available in landscape and portrait modes, respectively. Like we

said in the hardware end of things, the resistive touch means using the

tips of your fingers instead of the pads, which we find a tad

frustrating, but the keyboard in landscape mode is truly gargantuan,

and after an hour or two of learning we're guessing you could rattle

off some pretty lengthly emails or Great American Novels. Luckily, if

you're a T9 fan there's nothing stopping you from keeping the phone in

portrait mode and rattling off text messages with the touchable

alphanumeric keypad, and the phone is frankly too narrow to work well

with QWERTY in portrait. The handwriting recognition looks good enough,

but we revert to a 2nd grade writing level whenever we pick up a pen,

so that stylus is staying firmly in its holster.

We're not convinced the touchable browser is a step up over existing

WebKit implementations on Nokia's other handsets, since the tap to zoom

function is slow and unreliable -- and no, you can't select text from

web pages to copy and paste. Panning around the page is also jittery,

perhaps a tad worse than the G1 -- nobody has managed to pull off

iPhone smooth yet in this department. We were using a slightly early

software build, so some of these problems might be fixed in the final

version, but it wasn't encouraging. Still, there's no denying the

advantages of viewing the web on a 640 x 360 LCD.

user posted image

We tested out an accelerometer-based driving game, but it was

overly sensitive and no-fun-at-all -- though we're guessing that

wouldn't be a hard fix. The graphics looked pretty good, though. Movies

are potentially this phone's killer app, but you'll have to do the

conversion just right to get smooth playback at full resolution. We did

see some video shot with the phone (that Sea World shot in the gallery)

and it looked pretty good.

Conclusion

If you haven't picked it up by now, Nokia isn't going after the

power users here. The phone will be marketed under Nokia's "Live"

banner, and really concentrates on the most basic communications --

calling and texting -- with a whole bunch of multimedia piled on top.

Nokia's Comes With Music helps on that end of things, and the screen

certainly helps with video, but this is no iPhone when it comes to to

solid media integration or full-featured media player apps. On the

communication side, we're sad to see Nokia almost burying some of its

S60 advantages. Everything's still there, but Nokia didn't put the

gruntwork in necessary to really take advantage a next-gen interface as

it relates to keeping track of emails, social networking, IM and the

correspondences of more than four people. All that said, Nokia isn't

claiming that the 5800 is the be all end all, is releasing it with a

very aggressive price point (€279 unlocked), and promises more where

this came from.

Official Retail Price: RM1499
(Original Distributor: Zitron, Avaxx, Sapura, i-Mobile)
Bargain and sourcing around, you might get a better price, approx RM13XX.

For screen protector:
According to forumer gaigene:
"Got it for RM18 and its the "Skool" brand. The SP got pre-cut lubangs for the earpiece, light and proximity sensors and the 3 keys at the bottom front of the phone. Glossy type. So far so good."

Some known problems which may occur on your Nokia 5800 (which happened randomly on the phone)

Quoted from the owners:

QUOTE
my 5800 screen suddenly has a permanent vertical line from top to bottom that doesnt go away. another problem is when on call.. its very hard to hear the other person talking... sometimes loud... sometimes super soft til kenot hear.
You may DIY and fix it. (Do it at your own risk)
Source 1 | Source 2 (Or you may refer Post #6.)

Alternatively, send in for warranty claim.

On 5/1/09 - We have forumer sent it to Nokia Care Centre, located at plaza berjaya.. 1st floor. it took about 1-2 hours to fix.
So according to him, the speaker is fixed! and no more volume fluctuation!

QUOTE
Why prompted a "Certificate Expired" error message when I was trying to install an app?"

Give it a soft reset by key in *#7370#
Lock code: 12345
Its equivalent to a factory reset to default settings. All programs will be lost. Backup here means using either built-in backup utility or PC Suite backup to backup all your messages, contacts, calendar, to-dos, meetings, and necessary phone settings. Content in micro-SD card is unaffected but applications installed in it will be re-detected by the phone and re-installed automatically. It works like a charm.

QUOTE
Some said bcoz of the poor finishing of the cover then some sort like lighting leakage from the right top corner...does it happen on any 5800xm here ???

Don't worry about the light leakage. Its typical to see it and am very sure any phones/products made in plastic will see such imperfections.

On 5/1/09, a forumer sent a letter to Nokia about the speaker poroblem, apparently Nokia isn't aware of this issue yet.
Here's the reply from them:

8/1/09 - Here's the POLL result created by forumer chezzball. About the user statistic of Nokia 5800 defect / working perfectly.

Courtesy from forumer Eiraku: Okay, here's the Tut I promised you guys... Do take into account, I haven't tried experimenting with the encoding settings yet, so while I get a sharp, smooth Video MP4 for the 5800XM, the file will be SLIGHTLY LARGER then the SOURCE AVI file (in my case, 232MB AVI --> 256MB MP4).

Where to get Handbrake? Uncle Google is your best friend.

Oh, another thing... If you're running Handbrake in Vista, MAKE SURE its running WITH Administrator Rights (Run as Admin).

So now, to the Tut!

In all actuality, converting MKV/OGM/DVDs aren't much different from the above, only with the addition of Choosing Title/Chapters (skip to the movie part, not the titles, or a specific part in the movie - it's in the Source part) for DVD; Choosing Audio Streams (again from the Audio part of the above) for MKV/OGM/DVDs; and Choosing Subtitles (see the audio part) for MKV/OGM/DVDs.

DIY FIX: Speaker volume problem.

(Do it at your own risk. If you can't handle it, send it back to Nokia Care Centre and let the professionals do it for you)

=====================================================

Articles & Photos courtesy of Snake from mynokia.su & our LYN forumer jye'n.

Before you start, there's a suggestion by the Snake.

**Attention! All the action is desirable to carry out in the bathroom, because there is no dust because of the humidity.

1) Use the plectrum, open the top cover/lid starting from the camera button.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

You should remove only the plastic 'frame' which locks the screen to the phone's body. It is detachable on its own (no screen, no metal parts).

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Oh hey, you look lost!!!
No worries, here's a Youtube LIVE demo about the DIY steps!!

2) This is how it looks like when the earpiece is in place:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Next, use a flat-head ('-' type precision tool or any small screw driver.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

3) Removing the earpiece will reveal the two contact points on the mainboard for the earpiece.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

4) Here's the default appearance of the earpiece (bottom):

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

To make sure the pins can touch the contact points (highlighted above) properly, I bended the earpiece pins 'upwards'. (Be very careful here not to break the pins. You may want to hold points A and B while bending.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Now, you're done with bending. Next, put back the earpiece. Here's the tricky part, as you may have forgotten which is the correct position to put in. No worry, the part is keyed, meaning, it can only go in one way. Try the other way if the 1st trial fails. DO NOT force it in, it should go in smoothly.

5) Put back the the cover and the plastic 'frame'. Now you're done
and can forget about the earpiece problem forever smile.gif

pana, happy birthday!

Worried about data charges when you use Nokia Maps and it constantly downloads maps as you move around?

Learn how to pre-load the entire country's map here.

Some pictures of a semi-hard two-piece snap-together casing. Clicky the thumbnailies for a bigger piccie.

2nd - bought 5800 a few week ago. but last night a friend want me to check out a youtube site. so, i just click to 'internet' and search (btw, i am using maxis 3G). and guess what, wow, so impress. can find that youtube and everyone of us watch it using this 5800. impressive (but later dont how much my phone bill will be coz using 3G data...sad face hahaha)...so, conclusion, 5800 deserve to be nicknamed a 'TUBE'...coz it really works.
3rd - despite my gripes earlier on sound problem...sometimes hv sometimes dont hv...hmmm...well, nothing is perfect
4th - sorry noob question...mine is still v10.0.010 i think HK set. any benefit to upgrade to latest v11?

thanks again. long live 5800

cons :
1. camera function not as good as n73/ 5610(same 3.2MP) ,especially night capture
2. battery usage high due to large screen
3. less application/games support coz the s60v5 still new (especially touch screen support)
4. tends to be problematic like earpiece problem, light leakage

but ... the pros are more wub.gif

1. I think the camera is better than 5610. I compare with my friend phone and yes, the camera takes better picture than the average 3.2MP phone.
2. Yup battery usage is high. Needs to charge almost once daily.
3. More applications will be available soon. Not to worry about this.

but someone did the test comparing those phone, seem like 5800 not as good as 5610.
They said the main reason is due to its firmware still new but 5610 using a stable s40 platform

ic, looks like all the problems can be solved anyways... good stuffs.

1 more question though, can i identify the ear piece problem the moment b4 i buy the phone? as in, ask the dealer to turn in on, make some calls, n do some testing to see if it was a defect or not? coz its annoying to go back to the shop to rectify it, i mean, cant we just do it at 1 go?

as i read in previous post, u can do some hard pressing at the back of the phone to see if the volume gets softer as the 2 connectors are at inward positions...

also, is the color myth, a fact? so called 'red-team' has lesser issues comparing to the 'blue-team'..hehe

that's a reasonable price. if you bargain a little, you might get a little discount.

so far the cheapest oso around RM1300 (avaxx set)

and yo, thanks again for the birthday wishes, love you guys  rclxm9.gif

anyways for the existing owners, might as well list out the location n price bought for the unit though, and TS can update them along with owner list, could help others to get theirs without having to kena con or whatever.

just a suggestion though wink.gif

price changes from time to time
it's not practical to compare the current price or the past price as we wouldn't know whether the price will stay or increase
handphone price usually drops over time but considering the demand for this phone now, the price i think will stay until CNY if not can be even higher

thanks again. long live 5800

You can check back the first sticky page cause I think Pana has posted a list of improvements for v11 firmware. The same list is available on the internet too. You can google for it. In short, the v11 provides a lot of bug fixes and some small improvements for the phone. I highly recommend v11.

QUOTE(freeman1314 @ Jan 10 2009, 12:36 PM)
Wanna ask something here.If we flash the firmware will it void the warranty?
*
I don't think it will void the warranty as long as you are using Nokia Software Updater. Phoenix also lets you flash the phone but it is only meant for service center usage, not consumer. I don't know if Nokia can tell if you have flashed but if you are using AP, it doesn't matter anyway. If you brick it, they will definitely charge money.

QUOTE(guest321 @ Jan 10 2009, 12:36 PM)
2. Yup battery usage is high. Needs to charge almost once daily.
*
I think battery usage is high now because we have all just got the phone so excitement is still high. We keep on playing with the phone thats why usage will be high. But on average, the phone can last 3 days ++ Pretty good in my opinion. The battery is just slightly smaller than the one used on E71 and that battery is considered to be pretty large.

QUOTE(Krovaxq @ Jan 10 2009, 12:44 PM)
ic, looks like all the problems can be solved anyways... good stuffs.

*
Well I can be sure that the problem affects both red and blue Nokia 5800, nothing special about it. Unfortunately we can't identify the faulty ones during purchase as 'contact issue' is generally intermittent issues. They come and they go unless you fix it. The problem affects the entire product line and every single phone will have a possibility of experiencing that problem sooner or later.

The answer lies on the product code and serial numbers. But it will be useless to us because we don't have the database ain't it? So it doesn't matter lar. Hehehe...

But iPhone 3G isn't business phone mah. Should get E71 or the old E90. I have the E71 and I love the keyboard but my interest is in user interface like Nokia N85, 5800, etc.

Anyway if you are interested with E71, you can PM me. brows.gif

anyways for the existing owners, might as well list out the location n price bought for the unit though, and TS can update them along with owner list, could help others to get theirs without having to kena con or whatever.

just a suggestion though wink.gif

good suggestion, however phone prices changes every time.
basically this phone cost around RM13xx or so. anything above it is a ripped off. (i think everyone knows it now)

therefore, i will skip this idea.
thanks for contributing anyway!

Well these cases are so far only available in Hong Kong, probably have to wait awhile before they show up here. I've check around Lowyat, no one is selling the cases yet. The HD silicone case looks like a good product but the one shown here looks better. It gives it a different look. You know those Fluke digital meters with thick rubber protection cases? Thats what I mean.

What can I say, v11 firmware has sort of improve the camera quality than when its on v10. Taking macro shots looks better now! icon_idea.gif But low light quality is still so so. Video shooting is still the same.

What can I say, v11 firmware has sort of improve the camera quality than when its on v10. Taking macro shots looks better now!  icon_idea.gif But low light quality is still so so. Video shooting is still the same.

those photos are taken at outdoor. so i'd say quality is fine.

attaching one of the original size photo for reference.

Here's my example before and after a picture edit..not so good with photoshop..but a friend showed me by moving sliders here and there..results turn out better

*
oh
but that 1 shown b4 is not transparent rite?
i wan some protection but still able to see things inside through it
HD silicone case is my choice^^

No actually an experiment was done to use high frequency sound to avoid teenagers from "lepaking" in a certain area. I remember seeing it somewhere on TV, a supermarket used it to get rid of teens who likes to linger around the outside area of the supermarket. After a few weeks no teenagers come to the store, and people around the age of 30+ can't hear a thing. biggrin.gif

I'll try it in a phone, see what happens, laugh.gif Useful as a ringtone I think. laugh.gif Won't annoy the adults around you, but you can hear it.

Those AP sets were brought in to take advantage of the market where availability of original units are zero (before launching). So there are costs involved to bring in and also to profit from the demand from initial buyers. Then the originals are launched and OOPS, at a very attractive price even lower than AP sets. What happen to them? Burn finger lor...

They can't reduce anymore, because they paid the launch price in Hong Kong which after all the foreign exchange is just slightly cheaper than original's price here. Add in the cost of bringing them in, paying people to bring it in, your margin isn't that big after all.

it's different from individuals to individuals
some can't get used to it cos they prefer to get a feel of the keypad hence why people sell off this phone
messaging is fast, various method to input your text, but you can no longer type without looking at the screen. tongue.gif

I went to one local retailer here asking about 5800 price. She quote RM1470 for ori set (forget to ask which one). So, I ask what the price for AP set. She said last time the price was RM1700 but now they don't have stock.

Ha..ha.. never heard about that.

I think it more Avax/Zitron to gain market than Nokia. Because Ap and ori still from Nokia.

Actually Nokia didn't do anything to these people, Nokia already announced from the start that the product is an ultra cheap one. When it was launched in Europe, Rusia, etc the price has already show where this product stands. Its cheap because Nokia wants to compete with Apple. Remember Comes With Music service?

Those AP companies missed all the signs. They basically risked it all. Now this is going to be the way of life. Availability of AP will be lower and lower. Last time our AP sets used to come from neighboring countries. Now I see sets from different countries further away, something which used to be 'water goods' before AP came into the market.

The price of phones is going to be same over the world now or at least on par. This the way to fight/discourage parallel importers because they destroy market share and cause havoc on your international price structure.

All sets whether AP or Original should have all the accessories included. Unless some AP are cheating and taking things out of the package. But guitar pick isn't that expensive lar...

But RM1999 for Zitron set is a little high, don't you think?

well zitron set is selling at RM1499 now. Pre order can get you a nokia stereo headset.
not sure about AP set but if you check the unboxing videos in you tube, you will notice that all the package at other countries seem to be the same.

All sets whether AP or Original should have all the accessories included. Unless some AP are cheating and taking things out of the package. But guitar pick isn't that expensive lar...

But RM1999 for Zitron set is a little high, don't you think?

Have to jaga hati orang mah. Hahaha! I know its too high. But at least it is original. Many people think that going Zitron is 'more' original than other authorized dealers. Its a myth. An A is A because it is an alphabet. Nothing more nothing less.

the actual redemption card is stated 1000 songs on it?
The 100 songs is invalid. No problem even if scratched already. Go back to dealer to get your 1000 songs.

in realplayer, go to options, settings and proxy then turn it off! dunno where it got those ip in the first place. Never set it before.

Added on January 10, 2009, 6:39 pmbtw..i noticed something. This only happens when u use shortcuts on your main screen (the 4 shortcut menus) .

do you notice a horizontal line after the 4 icons? very thin one...at first i thought it might be dead pixels...but when i changed to default or contacts shortcut, that line doesn't show!

I couldn't really cope with this fast-moving thread 2 days ago. As a result of it, I missed hundreds of posts.

It seems it's a very popular phone among LYN users. How about ppl from other states? I bet many ppl would be asking about it mainly because of the price nokia set on it.

I'll be getting a new phone when I get back to Malaysia. And tubey is now on top of my list.

Video

The video application, as well as Real Player are not so much interesting to the user in terms of video clips playback on the big wide-screen display with 3.2” diagonal. Besides, the 10.0.004 firmware, which we used during tests lacks many codecs, thus we left our hopes to enjoy numerous clips and films with 640x360 resolution.

But we are more interesting not in the video playback, as it is, but in the reasons, that make Rapidoyawe 1.13 used in the 5800 XM provide better picture with 30 frames per second refresh rate, while the same processor installed in the N85 fails to cope with this task.

It is funny, but the reason may is that the 369 mHz CPU ARM 11 utilized in the 5800 is not the main video decompressor, as OMAP deals with it. Yes, it is exactly OMAP, unlike that one used in the N82. It has DM500 coprocessor providing a high-quality compression of the video stream, when recording, as well as its quick displaying. It is that component, which some articles call 3D Image Engine, though it is more correctly to call it an accelerator.
Some crazy Russians from eng.mobiset.ru found that the 5800XM has a Video Acceleration Co-Processor? Interesting... No wonder my converted vids are a bit TOO smooth IMHO for the 300++ Proc alone... brows.gif

Shame it can only do DIVX/XVID/MPEG4... biggrin.gif

More data on the OMAP-DM500 Co-Proc taken from http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbu...contentId=50020 for other techgeeks like me... biggrin.gif

OMAP-DM500 and OMAP-DM299 coprocessors

The highly integrated and OMAP-DM299 multimedia coprocessors combines low-power hardware and programmable image processing capability to provide high still image and video quality for low-cost camera phones. Using the coprocessor, manufacturers can gain increased performance with little redesign in systems based on existing platforms in order to improve camera and video quality.  The OMAP-DM500 coprocessor has the added advantage of stacked memory, resulting in reduced board space.

The OMAP-DM500 and OMAP-DM299 multimedia coprocessors feature an ARM7 processor and TI’s most advanced Image Signal Processor (ISP) technology, including a dedicated imaging/video accelerator. Flexible interfaces support various types of CMOS sensor interfaces, signal conditioning circuits, power management, mobile DDR-SDRAM, shutter, iris and auto-focus motor controls. The devices also offer a seamless interface via SPI, I2C and parallel interfaces to application and baseband processors.

The OMAP-DM500 and OMAP-DM299 multimedia coprocessors come ready-to-use with software, enabling coprocessor enhancement to new and existing systems with minimal investment in development. Software management for the device’s programmable and dedicated image processing functions and peripherals is performed through the high-level operating system on the host processor. As part of the product, TI provides the framework and codecs that make up the baseline software. In addition, advanced still imaging and video features and applications are available from third parties, including face detection and tracking, smile detection, blink detection, red eye removal, backlight compensation, advanced image and video stabilization, as well as photo and video editing capabilities.
OMAP-DM500 and OMAP-DM299 Multimedia Coprocessors Features:

    * Simplifies design of camera phones with up to 5-megapixel sensors
    * TI’s latest image signal processor (ISP) technology with capability of JPEG compression up to 80 megapixels per second
    * Supports up to 30-fps MPEG4 (VGA), H.264 (CIF) encode and decode
    * Full support of multiple image sensors utilizing various interfaces to maximize compatibility
    * Support for advanced still image stabilization and noise filtering to enhance low light performance
    * High-quality video capture supported by utilizing video stabilization along with high-resolution advanced video codecs
    * Seamless interface to OMAP™ application processors and other baseband and application processors
    * Ready to use without coprocessor programming, minimizing risk and saving development time
    * Includes TI baseline imaging and video processing software, with additional advanced still imaging and video features available from third parties
    * Low power consumption extends battery operation
    * Stacked memory (OMAP-DM500 coprocessor) and small form factor packaging aid mobility

Leverages TI expertise in both digital still cameras and wireless technologies.

Zitron currently has Blue stocks only but I heard they will be getting Red stocks soon.

On another point, I went to Nokia Care Centre at Plaza Berjaya today at around 11.30 am to get the earpiece problem resolved. They wanted me to leave the phone there for 2 days and I insisted that Nokia staff had told me that it should be a "quick" job. So I managed to get it replaced and by 2.00pm the phone was ready. So far so good, loud and clear. For those going to that particular Nokia Care Centre, please note that they open only on Sat and are closed on SUn. On Sat they open up to 3pm so if anyone wants to fix anything, go early. They're open at 10 am, else go on weekdays.

I dun really prefer to leave the phone behind especially for 2 days. Seriously. Since we know the earpiece prob is a 2 hour job

Exactly. So please insist for them to repair by 2 hrs. Don't leave it there unless absolutely necessary, By the way on the jobsheet they put they replaced the whole earpiece and not repair it, cannot verify though. Oh and also, nothing can be done about the ill fitting casing that causes light leakage or so they tell me, seems the 5800 is prone to this problem.

too much work, i skip that.

tubians normally reported in by saying what color they bought. too hassle to go thru 100++ users and re-ask again.

Is the light leakage really that serious? Its pure aesthetics, innit? Mine has a little here and there but i dont find it annoying at all. Not like i look at the edges of my phone every day. Slap one one of those silicone casings and tadah!

Speaking of silicone casings, kindly report any sightings of them if you happen to stumble upon any, please?

Eh eh eh, the leakage you guys mean is from the edge of the screen (as in, when your eyes are almost on the same plane of the screen) or from the enclosure itself? If enclosure then no problem ler.. Just abit of backlight leakage at the top and the side.

Hey ppl,

So is anybody having any problems with their 5800 other than the earpiece volume matter?

Checked out the price at Pyramid recently. They're selling the Avaxx set for RM1320. Bundled with the 8gb card but forgot to ask about the 1000 free songs. Lol.

Then I asked the Nokia shop about the earpiece prob and he said the units selling now are alright. Nokia is selling it for RM1499 tho.

So I'm wondering whether to get the RM1320 and risk having the earpiece problem because it might be from the first batch, or just get the RM1499.

say only mar, he cant guarantee it.

the max he can offer is, got problem, bring back for warranty lor.

so doesnt matter to get from shop, or from nokia - i'd go for whichever offer the cheapest (of course, no AP)

If you are willing to send it to the service centre, then get the cheaper priced one. Thats what i'd do. No guarantees that the ones Nokia has are problem free anyway. Salesmen can promise you the sky when they are trying to close a deal. In the end, if any issues arise, you would still have to send it in to Nokia Care. Not like you'd get royal treatment cuz you paid a premium anyway..

GUYS! Just came back from Johore!

Add me, I am an official Tubey now! Blue!!!

Many shops in Sutera are selling for RM1470, I managed to get an Avaxx set RM1380. That's the best I could get.

And AP has dropped to RM1350. Avaxx has increased their price dramatically.

My phone is charging now. Next thing to do is to get the SP.

Yeah, just started working in Singapore few months ago.

I suggest you guys go buy now, grab it if it's between RM1300-1400. I believe they will either increase the price (I was quoted RM1508) or refuse to give discount.

I went to this shop in Today's, and there was this seller even dekcuf me by telling me that I wouldn't get RM1300 or get it from China. I regreted that I didn't kcuf him back.

So you are suggesting that the main processor used on the Nokia 5800 isn't just the 369MHz Freescale MCX300 but another co-processor/accelerator from TI OMAP? I wonder it has PowerVR cores inside? Hehehe...

that's because of your screen protector.
try making a hole at the sensor area there like this:

the function is to save battery during calls...
you pick up the phone and place it near your ear, the light sensor sense it so the screen will go off.
another reason is sometimes people will stick their face to the screen and maybe will miss press some buttons, so by making the screen go blank, you can't press any button.

Its not surprising because a phone has power constraints as it relies on battery power and while the laptop obviously has a larger power source. Also the antenna on the phone is smaller due to size constraints while the laptop can accommodate a larger antenna. You can't adjust the power of the emitter as you don't have access to the firmware coding. Also you can burnt the emitter if power drain is too much. Just some of the implications of increasing emitter power output.

Lol, yea, mine is still intact, after 1 week owning this phone. Already placed order for 3x SP on ebay. Sigh...went to LYP today to hunt for cheap SP, but cheapest I found is RM10/pcs w/o bargain yet vmad.gif . In the end, didn't buy any. The mirror finishing one looks good, but i didn't went for in the end after second thought, as I'm afraid it may affect the viewable angle.

You mean by soldering the speaker terminals to the contact pads? Ya, that should be permanent but it's going to be difficult due to space constraints. That speaker is inserted like putting the last piece of the puzzle. You can solder the contacts facing outward of the phone but the one facing inside.

Can't remember. Not even stated in the receipt. I can only remember it's located very deep inside on 1st Floor. In fact, i saw a few other shops selling the same make/model.

It should work because V-cool like other tints works by blocking the heat spectrum of sun light. And most the sun's heat originates in the infra-red range. So V-cool blocks most of the IR by filtering these specific ranges. You must be concern because you've heard word of mouths that SmartTag doesn't work with V-cool. Thats because SmartTag uses IR.

GPS like satellite communication uses microwaves and that is not blocked by tinting films like V-cool.

when you apply wallpaper, did it cover the entire screen???
why mine can't cover the top part???

I'm using 360 X 640 images so the size should not be a problem.

Yes, it should be permanent provided you could solder it. But I implemented another alternative and that is to put some spacers (in the form of foam) so to put pressure onto the speaker. That pressure will keep the speaker in its space and not move and loose contact.

QUOTE(davidmak @ Jan 10 2009, 11:38 PM)
It should work because V-cool like other tints works by blocking the heat spectrum of sun light. And most the sun's heat originates in the infra-red range. So V-cool blocks most of the IR by filtering these specific ranges. You must be concern because you've heard word of mouths that SmartTag doesn't work with V-cool. Thats because SmartTag uses IR.

GPS like satellite communication uses microwaves and that is not blocked by tinting films like V-cool.

try putting the installation file into your memory card and install from there.
no need use cable, just the memory card will do.
