D90 is a newer cam, but with additional functions that only adds fun IMO... Newer processors bla bla bla some of these are just marketing.
If you already have a budget limit, then D80+Flash will be much better than D90 without flash.

What about a D90 with HD video over a D80 without HD video recording capabilities? icon_idea.gif

...But I don't take videos very often anyways doh.gif

With your budget you can get an entry level DSLR or a superb prosumer.

If you're willing to start off into the DSLR world, get a Canon EOS 1000D or a Nikon D60.

If you want an all-rounder prosumer, get the Panasonic Lumix LX3. RM1.7k (around there).

If you want a superzoom camera, get the Panasonic Lumix FZ28.

If you ask me, I'll go for the LX3 as it is the best prosumer camera you can get and you can learn lots from its superb image quality. Once you get the hang of it then get a DSLR and move on - then the LX3 can become your secondary camera.

I'd recommend you to buy the D60 and keep the extra money for upgrading later on. If you will consider Canon the EOS 1000D would do you good too.

hi there,

well.. i currently own a compact, which i fully utilize it.. and i find there is lotsa limitation to it, and i plan to venture into DSLR. but i was stuck with d90, really attracted to this cam, but the price is over my budget.

well, i would rate my self of knowing the basic of DSLR photography, just that i wanted some other opinion to get the right camera, i am afraid i might choose the wrong camera.

at first i plan to get the 1000D, but after plaing with my frens one, i found out the white balance in low lighting is really bad, (correct me if i am wrong) i am not sure.. maybe there is some settings that i did not know of.

hope you guys can help me in choosing the right camera.

thanks in advance.

i wouldn't say the White balance is bad
the only time you see it being too warm is in tungsten lighting (not all low light)
actually all canon cameras are like that. you can set it to tungsten to get better WB but then some times i think the yellow cast adds to the mood

WB can be adjusted. Every camera can do that. It will be the same on a D60 too if you do not know how to meddle around.

Anyway the 1000D is a good choice, but since you're weighed onto Nikon side (D90) then you can get the D60 so later on you can choose to upgrade the body only.

Compact camera

Budget : 1300 (preferably lower tongue.gif )

Brand : canon, nikon & panasonic

Screen : 3" LCD

Battery Type : Non AA battery type

to all sifu's out here, i have hard time choosing a compact camera. I am not sure whether is the canon ixus 870is is good enough for its price tag or are there similar product which is on par or better but offer a lower price tag out there such as the new nikon s230? i'm new to owning a camera therefore most of the time i will be using the "auto" function rather than playing with the "scene" function. Thanks! smile.gif

hi there,

thanks for the advice.. actually, my preference is towards canon, since like waht you says it can be meddle around.. i felt much comfortable with that.. by the way, between 1000D and 450D which one will you prefer? interms of quality? and functionnality, i know that 450d have 2more Af points compare to 1000D. i wanted to get a good cam that can last me some time... and that i can use it for a long time... and at the same time fullfils my 3k budget. mind give me your personal opinion?

There's no denying that the 450D is a better camera than the 1000D. But only just.
And the fact that it is that little bit better than the 1000D is justified by its extra retail price.
The question boils down on whether you need those extra features or not. Take me for example, I more or less only use the center AF point, so an extra 2 AF points wont do nuts for me. rolleyes.gif
For that extra cost, the 450D has a eye proximity sensor that turns the LCD off when you bring your face close to the camera. For me, I don't need that. The default setting in the camera is to turn the LCD off when the shutter button is pressed halfway. smile.gif
Quality-wise, I would say both cameras are on par with each other. Sure, the 450D might capture just that little more detail as it has 2 extra megapixels. But I doubt it's noticable unless you pixel peep and scrutinize every last inch of the picture sad.gif
At the end, if you feel like going for the 450D, by all means go for it, and vice versa. icon_idea.gif

Should - unless you can find a cheaper body + lens combo. In my opinion, bargain it down a bit more (if it's used of course) or if it is new go for it.

I personally would go for the D90 over the D80 as it's newer and while I'm not sure of the details I do know that there are some significant improvments over the 80, one being HD video recording.

new.. of course.. haha dont want my first dslr to be a used unit.. hehe ..

Don't greed for the tripod ad cleaning kit. I think they will most probably give you China cleaning kit and Digieye, and these two are not worth getting.

In terms of built quality these 2 are on par. i would even say they are exactly the same as 1000D body is almost the same as 450D. they even use the same battery grip.

Eye proximity sensor, 2 extra AF point, IR receiver to me is not that important.
the only thing extra is spot metering. but 1000D has partial metering which is close to spot and manually adjust exposure if still not good enough

the additional RM 600 to me is alot. with that money can almost get a 55-250 IS lens already
