Compact camera

to all sifu's out here, i have hard time choosing a compact camera. I am not sure whether is the canon ixus 870is is good enough for its price tag or are there similar product which is on par or better but offer a lower price tag out there. i'm new to owning a camera therefore most of the time i will be using the "auto" function rather than playing with the "scene" function.
