Well, I don't really bother about that. After all, we're supposed to be enjoying our new TVs..not constantly worrying about image retention. Having said that I don't never use my PY800 for Astro. Its only for my PS3 and HTPC. My Astro is paired with a Samsung LCD and the quality is appalling. My only wish is that they go HD this year.

Mine looks like a black/reddish dot at the centre. 10? That's mental man. But overall if u do a search on google they dun mention much bt dead pixels in plasma.

Welwitchia, so no worries abt the image retention eh?

wow..got ir/burn in issue so soon with pv80...
i know both are issue on plasma, but so soon with G11 panel - Should call for warranty.

anyway, i have read that, there are DVD that can repair the burn in/ir issues at the early stage of the panel live. Mostly due to the "immaturre" phosphorus gases in the cells. Read around about plasma panel breaking, especially the first 100 hours - there are DVD iso and Jpeg image that you can download via torrent - or any other method.

Basicly, there are 2 ways of doing it - play/looping the DVD for 100 hour or play the DVD in between viewing. You can read/google it for the details

After that, there is picture tweaking. Also advisable that the 1st 100 hour to limit the brightness and contrast setting - also more details can be found by googling it.

These are the tips i gather from AVS forum - a US base techy forum. Over there pv80 = pz80u, py800 = pz800u, and py850 = pz850u. Do you know that the pz850/py850, and pz800/py800 have this "THX" certified setting for colour/brightness/contrast/etc...Only that they(panny) dont label it as "THX" certified.

So, making things short, more info can be found in the AVS forum - AVS Forum
- plasma break-in period methods
- tackling IR/Burn-in issues
- picture calibration

Also, if you wanna jump straight on - here it is Plasma Tips

here is the official from Panny website - Panasonic Global FAQs

Sorry if i offended anyone. dont mean to sound like sifo or what's not. Just wanna share the info.
may be somebody care to comment. rolleyes.gif

just a general reply.. my 2 cents..

actually you all are micro analysing all these too much...
sometimes to learn how to swim you need to get into the pool.. how much you read about swimming and horrors about drowning, sucking into the deepend.. will never get you started in the 1st place.

all these burn in la.. etc.. CRT also got burn in issue, never seen anyone complain also? cos it's not a big issue! I have my plasma for over 3years, few months was viewing it at 4:3 mode astro 10-12hours a day... when switched back to 16:9. sure the part with black bars previously was not matching the brightness with the other middle section of the screen...
but after a few days viewing back at full 16"9 stretched mode, the problem went away.. it's reversible.. of coz I can't say if you leave it on for 6-12months is how la.. but 2months I did it..

last time also like that when I bought the panasonic LCD projector, on AVS also got people complain panel misalignment la, dust blob la, smoothscreen microlens not sharp la.. dead color polarizers la.. noisy fan la..
and till now still serving me dutifully..

thanks for all the info and tips guys.

yup, i dun really care coz i believe panny would have done something about it and most people would steer clear of plasmas if these problems were apparent and severe. smile.gif

back to enjoying my PV80. can't wait for my replacement unit. the dead pixel is a real eyesore wink.gif

Hi I am from Johor Bahru and most of the prices here are quoted for KL. I got a few quote and need the advise of the experts here on which to get. I know that Panasonic are well established but LG is cheaper..much cheaper.

I am torn between this 3 models :

1) Pana 50PV80 - quote at RM$5800 (HD Ready)
2) LG 50PG60UR - RM$5200 (HD Ready)
3) LG 50PG70FR - RM$6800 (Full HD)

I will like to go for 50PG70FR to future proof my purchase as I do not normally change TV, use until "kong". But how is the reliability of LG ? I am sure I will not be able to see much difference between the plasma..most of the time watch DVD and broadcast TV. Does LG plasma break down a lot? Yes I heard the service is lousy...another concern.
Your advice is appreciated.

Alright guys, BHB exchanged my PV80 to a brand new unit today. Upon powering up, I checked the Service Menu and display time was 0000:00 and manufactured dated is Dec 2008. I demonstrated to the tech who installed my PV80 for me the service menu and the guy was impressed. He now knows that there are methods of checking the display time on the PV80. All in all, my purchase with BHB not bad la. At least in the end I got a brand new unit.

I heard that the manufacturer's engineer can reset the display time on their tv. If the engineer can do it, whos to say that the the retails chains can't do it either.

These retail guys don't even know that the service menu existed. Therefore, I seriously doubt they are able to reset it. And btw, this new PV80 even has the new smell. biggrin.gif .... So, I'm content.

I think the retailers routinely pass of display models as new and how many buyers know how to check the panel time? 5% or less probably.
