My Personal Review on my Speed Black C702 Cybershot handphone

10 reasons why I choose this phone after my last phone W810i fusion white walkman phone.
1. It's time to upgrade my mobile contract and Starhub(Singapore ISP) give me $100 voucher to buy new phone.

2. New release from Sony Ericsson regarding the new C-Series Cybershot mobile phone and I think it's the cut over from K-series to C-series.

3. This phone got Large Screen (2.2inches) which bigger than C902(2.0inches), Water & Dust Resistance, aGPS which usually only available in smart phone, photo geo-tagging, finger print resistant case, face detection and face autofocus.

4. I like the design of this phone, feel very solid and rough (is like drop from 2 floor to 1 floor also won't spoilt). Light weight which only 105g and the dimension of the phone is not very wide or too long. It's just nice 106 x 48 x 15.5 mm dimension.

5. No joy stick and it is D-pad which won't easily got problem. I like the key-pad number design.

6. The place to insert memory card (M2) re-design to become better than W810i one which will poke out after you use for some time.

7. 3.2 megapixel camera with cover protected and dual LED brighter light.

8. Megabass and Stereo widening function for media player and support up to 8Gb for M2 memory card.

9. Been finding high & low for the Sony Ericsson phone which have good camera function and also nice music from the phone and this is consider the best combination to me already. Because it have 3.2 megapixel camera with some cybershot function and also the Megabass function from W-series plus this phone is a mid-range phone so it won't cause you as much as C902 which cost you roughly about RM1.6k($700sgd) and above.

10. Starhub(which is like Maxis, Digi or Celcom in Malaysia) give me 6 months free subscription fee and unlimited 3G HSPD online service plus this new C702 is free $0sgd after I use the $100sgd voucher given by them during the 2 years re-contract.


So far the Cons(bad) of this phone is:
1. The dial/answer and end call key is quite difficult to press as it's a bit small and you will easily accidently press on the "shortcut" key and other button around the call and end call key.

2. There is a shortcut key allow you directly go to media file which located on top of the call/answer key BUT when you want to minimize the media player you need to select from the option and go to "minimize" function then only can minimize it unlike walkman phone which allow you directly stop it or minimize it (I know it's a bit over lah because it's not a Walkman phone mah... but Cybershot) but I already used to the walkman easy music function mah... =.=

3. The original earphone you can put inside your phone box and keep in storeroom cause the quality of sound is really bad if compare to the walkman original earphone HPM-70. Luckily my ex-phone is walkman series so I use back my old earphone which last me 1year and 9 months already. Listen to music same like using walkman phone with the HPM-70 on my new C702. Really advice and suggest you at least buy a HPM-70 earphone if you don't have because it's for you to make use of the Megabass function else by using the original earphone come along with your C702 is really spoilt the megabass function.

4. Feel a bit slow and delay in the function and response time for the phone to react on what you pressing maybe due to the effect of the theme and also the fade effect.

5. The + and - button for you to adjust volume and view phone status on the side is quite hard to press. Maybe due to the dust and water resistance function therefore the button is make in a different design and pattern.

6. As usual for most of the Sony Ericsson phone, the battery cover is bloody damn hard to open... I give up cause really don't wish to use screw driver or hammer to knock it out... =.="

So far.. this is what I found from this phone after use it for since last friday till now.

7. Quite a number of users complaint that their phone will autorestart when launching or using some application. Autorestart problem and it's able to reduce the frequent of autorestart by reset your phone to factory default and update to the latest firmware.

Sometimes, a 3.2MP camera is much better than a 5MP camera.

Yaloh to me 5megapixel or 3.2megapixel make no differences because 3.2 with autofocus and face detection feature is good enough already.

i agree. somehow ppl would want the higher mega pixel, without realizing the quality. i do believe, even 2 megapixel if the quality is so great, ppl will buy it. take SE K750i as example.

the pictures look abit too noisy. not sure if it is on par with k810 or not.

if take it as an upgrade, i guess c702 fares quite well.

glare, any settings you did or u took all the pics in auto? does it has ISO mode?

I took all the photo with the all "Auto" setting using C702. Don't have ISO to set for this model. Yeah I think photo quite noisy is the cons of this phone and I read from other review they also claimed that the photo is quite noisy.



But if compare to some of the photo I took using my old W810i 2megapixel with AF, some photo I feel that it's better than my existing C702 3.2megapixel camera.

For example this photo which I took with my W810i with Auto Focus during my visit to Singapore Zoo... but don't know why will took this photo instead of the animal in Zoo =.="

last time i oso use w810..n base on comparison, w810 (stock mode) take nicer pics in certain aspect/area than current my p1i \
n ive seen in other forum, their modded w810 really can very nice pics
nway, regarding ur c702 pics, it might be due to FW also, perhaps next update might improve its pics a little bit

Haven't officially launch in Malaysia yet. It will definitely launch together with C902 don't worry.

For the aGPS it's actually using Google Maps which is pre-installed in this phone. So you need to use GPRS or 3G to online and get the connection to the Internet then only you will be able to view where is your location. So it's not that inside got Malaysia or Singapore map but whenever you are if you are able to connect to Internet using your mobile phone then aGPS will be able to detect where is your location.

Although I know that there are those offline view map application available out there but using Google Maps it's able to track down where is your current location and show you in map view or the Google Earth real view.

I tried out last week using the aGPS and once you on it and connected to Internet after you launch the Google map it will show you where is your location. So if you want to travel to another location B just press the "search" and enter the address after that it will be able to trace down the location you are heading to if the address is correct and available.

The Google map will show your current location as a color dot and when you moving the color dot on the map will move too. Quite interesting and useful for those who drive. But I think this service very depend on your mobile line speed if the signal is very week therefore your map will take longer time to refresh and detect your location.

googlemap, as i suspected. how sad. googlemap's detailedness is not too good, last time i tried with d810 and n95.

but since its not smartphone, cant say much. i wan garmin....

So, the conclusion is .... We wont be able to use softwares like Garmin Mobile XT on the C702 with ONLY GPS (Not aGPS) like the Nokia N82 or N95.
The C702 can only suppport Google Maps which to me is not accurate and incomplete. I've tried Google Maps on my P1 and I find it really crappy if you were to run Malaysian Maps. Anyone can clarify this?

C702 is using aGPS. The Google map is not so accurate most of the time but I think it's better than the waynavigator.... I totally don't want to use that software after register it for the first time. Not user friendly and don't know how to use also.

how much time the gps signals lock taken from cold start? 3 mins? after the cold start the google maps should work very smooth & accurate isn't it?

Erm... less than half minute. After started the google map... the signal will refresh after few seconds. And will detect your current location. I think sometimes is depends on your 3G speed from subscriber. Quite ok only not very smooth but still acceptable and the accuracy is depend on whehter you are on move with vehicle or by walking. I try to walk all the way to another destination and during the process I can see my signal dot on the map follow exactly my path while i'm walking. But try before when take cab the signal will stuck at your current location but when the cab move for few seconds later til certain distance then only your position will be refresh and according to the signal tower if i'm not wrong. Cause it is not the exact location where the cab driving toward.

its better than nothing on GPS part, can't expect very good performance on it as the signal receiver not as strong enough like garmin gps

So... Can you use just GPS only (means depending on GPS navigator in the phone ....like the N82 or N85 without the support of network provider? Does it support Garmin Mobile ?
The maps on google is not accurate yet complete rite? Especially the Malaysian Map.

I think the aGPS system(Google map) cannot function without the mobile network. Maybe you can try to find out other application except Garmin which most probably for smart phone only. C702 is NOT a smartphone. Just that Sony Ericsson add in one smartphone feature in this Cybershot phone nia.

For the camera to use zoom don't expect too much for the zooming feature. And for C702 it's only allow you to zoom for 2x only and it's ONLY available when you select to VGA camera instead of the 3 or 2 or 1 megapixel when you take photo. But I do choose the VGA mode and try the zooming function before it's really better than 2.0megapixel W810i zooming which can reach 4x. This zooming function really acceptable in the sense of the result and quality of the photo unlike W810i after you make 1X zooming you can see the picture really unacceptable not to say zoom til 4x... it's totally a white elephant only.

Just now purposely go and view the price of C702 and confirm that the current market price in Singapore offer by Starhub is $525sgd which around RM1207.5 when times 2.3 the currency exchange rate. Although now is already reach til 1sgd=RM2.402!!!!! Oh my god... highest ever than I saw before. Ops...out of topic already

SE purposely lower down the camera zoom function to avoid direct compete with C902?

normal if SE do that. Even though it is camera line but it is mid tier ones. usually mid tier doesnt sport digital zoom in full res (except some other brands.)

yeah cause you are using Google Map so it require you to online or connect to the Internet from your phone in order for you to use the GPS function.

I've read some AGPS about W760i's, the article mentioned the Fast Port as the GPS reception antenna should not covered it for better signal received..is that true to your C702 as well?

I think depends on what you want. The hardcore camera 5.0megapixel is with C902. G900 is smartphone already. Different category. For G900 I think you got screen touch function. You can refer to my first entry on the first phone on the 10 reasons why I choose to buy this phone. Maybe you will know the goodie for this phone C702.

For the photo quality i feel that not much different. Maybe the function a bit changes and for the color I suggest you choose speed black although cool cyan is a rare color but the actual phone with that cyan color looks not so nice as the one you see in brochure.

And another thing to worry is not sure whether cyan color will turn to yellowish or not after you used it for a long time.

well, thats wat i meant abt "cheap all in 1". If only G900 comes with C702 casing....
i would hav to decide on these 2 fones.... as g900 dun hav lens cover.... but have smartfone feature

btw, based on review, it states that C702 camera focus time is fast....
so, since u hav the fone,
1. how long does it take to safe a pic
2. how much difference in focus time from my good old trusty w800
3. does pic become blurry due to slight hand shake (my old w800 has fast shutter speed, it lessen the chances of blurry pic, but lack of fine details...)
4. how is the night shot? hopeless as there is no xenon?

IMO since SE push C702 together with C902, they will not allow the picture processing better than C902, the most same par with C902

The small round hole is actually to make the design not easily slip out from your hand and the material to make the back is similar like the small square carpet that you put your phone, key or thing on car so that it won't easily fall down one. I think the hole won't make the phone to become very ugly to me it's fine. But different people got different view what.

Added on July 9, 2008, 9:35 pmFor the C702 camera, after been using this phone for about 3 weeks I realised that the camera is pretty good when you take your photo during day time. But it's very poor in quality during night time. Maybe it's due to the lack of xenon flash. By the way if you want to take a short distance photo for your friend or family, the double LED light is bright enough to see their face. Just that if you want to take a shot on far object during night time then it will be very dark and almost the photo is in black color.

But during day time especially when the sun shine is very bright then the photo you took will be sharp, colorful, clear and nice if compare to the nighttime. Cause if it's too bright the camera will auto adjust the brightness of the photo.

Luckily, you can still use the "Fix Pic" function for your photo which lack of brightness or its too bright. This function can solve it quite well.
