So, have you upgraded your stock PS3 HDD yet?

Fatty model

Slimlines

Since I see in so many places people moaning about PS3's game instal (most of the moaners dont even have a PS3), just to check if you guys have issues on this.

Thanks! rclxms.gif

QUOTE(geekster129 @ Dec 13 2009, 10:46 AM)
Just upgraded mine to 320GB yesterday (WD 2.5" SATA 320GB 5400RPM 8MB)

Tips:

1. Make sure you have an external HDD ready (formatted in FAT32)
2. Prepare proper screwdrivers (sharper the better). Those screws are machine-tight!
3. Prepare the latest PS3 firmware file (PS3UPDAT.PUP) because you'll need it for the first installation. Put it into a USB thumb drive or external HDD. Again, must be FAT32!
4. Backup using the Data Backup utility to the external HDD.
5. Replace the HDD
6. After replacing, plug in the USB disk or HDD that contains the firmware and press SELECT+START
7. Then, hold START for 5 seconds to confirm formatting the new drive.
8. Run the data restore utility to restore all the settings, game data, game saves (some games cannot be backed-up) that you have backed-up earlier.
9. Done. Enjoy your gaming on the new HDD. smile.gif
10. If you have any games downloaded from the Playstation Network, you need to reactivate them again. (No need to redownload and install). Go to your Download History under the Account Management settings in your PSN menu, select the game that you have downloaded earlier, press DOWNLOAD. You will see the screen which says "Activating, please wait...". Once this is done, the download screen will pop up. In this step, you can just skip it because all you want to do is to activate the game. If you don't activate the game after restoring them from the backup drive, you will receive an error saying that the "Copy-protection information is invalid"

QUOTE(SSJBen @ Jan 2 2010, 12:14 PM)
I've said it before and I'll say it again, 7200rpm drives won't hurt the PS3 or the drive itself.
Even so, theoritically 7200rpm drives are hotter and obviously spins faster as well, and common sense would tell you that means it'll also fail faster.

In real-life conditions, that's not the way it is.
There are many other considerations to take note of. Like how the HDD is built, how many platter design, how the actuator head parks... and so on.

But all that said and done, 7200rpm drives are quite a bit more expensive than their 5400rpm counterparts.
So it definitely isn't worth the extra money for a mere 2-5 seconds of loading time decreament (considering the game installs data on the HDD that is).
*
This is my advice, if you wish to keep your VITAL details intact.(provided you dont have a big ass USB storage)

You will need a USB storage with the latest PS3 firmware in ROOT/PS3/UPDATE , at least 8bg. (if that you dont have, stop playing ps3 and buy a DS)

1. Synch all of the trophies. All accounts. You need to be online to do this.

2. Back up all your Photos, music and movies, either batch by batch to your PC OR delete them all.

3. Delete the game utilities instals.

4. Delete the PSN games.

5. Now you should have very minimal data, go to System Settings

6. Go to Utilities -- backup utilities

7. Insert your FAT32 formatted USB storage.

8. Choose BACKUP ALL DATA (or something like that)

9. Wait for it to finish. Once finished, take out the HDD and put the new one.

10.Once powered up, the PS3 will prompt you to format the HDD or not. If you choose NO, GTFO.

11.The after that, PS3 will ask you to put the USB storage with the latest firmare, so slam the sucker in the slot.

12.Firmware updating, and for God's sake, please wait for it to be finished.

13.After the process, the system will restart.

14.Go to Utilies, restore, and select restore. RESTORE ALL DATA.

15.Then the PS3 will have all the save data with the multiple accounts inside.

16.Redownload back the patches and the updates as well as the PSN games. Trophies? Synch them back to reobtain them.

This is MY GUIDE, and its working well for me. You guys may take this as a refference.

Gamers with big ass HDD USB storage can skip step 2 to 4 and step 16.

You can backup your HDD contents to an external device (USB external HDD), and then restore it back to the new HDD.

Stock 60GB. Left less than 2GB of free space. Deleted some demo few weeks ago because of GTA IV hdd install. Definitely need bigger hdd upgrade in future (wonder if MGS 4 requires mandatory hdd install? sweat.gif).

Swapped the HDD and restored the backup. But, seems like you can only restore savedata from other PS3, not the game utility data.

Have to redownload again GT5P update. tongue.gif Demn.

No need to install any software. Just plug it in, and booting up your PS3 will prompt you to format the HDD, and you're done.

if you
1. store movies
2. store a hell of mp3s
3. store pics
4. lazy to delete old demos

then its a yes. My ps3 is the family's entertainment center, and it needs a big gut to qualify for such titles nod.gif

theres only a 2 sec difference in loading speed between 5400rpm and 7200rpm.. too much technical stuff to mention.. google it, bro tongue.gif

upgrading 40g to 160g soon.

and here is my noob question. can you backup your data into an Ipod instead of any external hdd?

coz I've read somewhere that you can only backup into an external hdd with FAT32 format. icon_question.gif

Yup, u can only into a FAT32 formatted drive and not NTFS. Not sure bout EXT3 tho. Just make sure your iPod is detectable and space is big enough. wink.gif

Hi, r u a girl gamer? brows.gif

OK let me explain, HDD for PS3 is important because:
1) Some games need installation like the PCs do.
2) To store downloadable games from PSN.
3) To store downloadable demos from PSN.
4) To store videos (prefered HD videos/movies).
5) To store music (mp3s).
6) To store photos.
7) To store save files (no need memory card)
8) ... many other things

PSN is PlayStation Network. Its like a place to do shopping for games and addons.
PS3 is using wireless/wired. Up to you.
Have you done your homework regarding PS3? Please do if you don't want to get conned. Read the Beginners FAQ topic.

is there a way to move over the Other OS to a new HDD without reinstalling?

I spend sleepless nights getting the wifi and updates to work and don't want to start from square one again

Just take out the old HDD, replace with the new HDD, turn on the PS3, it tells you press OK to format, wait...then finish. No Problem thumbup.gif

Guys... for those who are upgrading their hard disks, make sure you guys BACKUP before pulling out the hard disk. If you pull out the hard disk, there is no turning back.

After you reformat, you can restore your stuffs by choosing System Settings -> Backup -> Restore (if I'm not mistaken). icon_idea.gif

My fellow PS-three-er,

Don't be too obsessed with having "ADDITIONAL Hard disk space" when you still haven't fully utilising it!!! Yeah... you need to download demos, but guys, it's demo!!! you like it, you buy the whole thing. You dun like it, delete it!!!

HDD is getting cheaper each day, and when you go uut and buy one u dun need, it's really waste of money...

Situation 1
All this while u use 40GB of ur HDD space..and one day the HDD full with ur all favorite games and medal ,movie and blabla bla..
How are u gonna backup 40GB of backup to your new HDD..
OKlah FAT file format can support up to 40GB but what about 80GB...do u want to tranfer 80GB backup save/install games
and u can't just plug the PS3 HDD to a PC..for backup

I rather waste some money then wasting my time..cause with time i can make money biggrin.gif

For ppl like me I value my save game very much..call me crazy but i still kept my FF7 save games files. laugh.gif laugh.gif

upgrade from 40gb to 160gb. bought 160gb for RM168 and better hdd casing for RM45 in muar here. planning to upgrade to 250gb but the stock finish already. so, extra money bought better hdd casing. my 40gb ps3 are filled with installed game data and save games. i kept my installed game data for collection cos most the games i played are rented from ooj brows.gif only bought 3 games only, folklore, heavenly sword and mgs4. usually i managed to complete around 2 to 3 games per month but right now quite busy with pixeljunk eden becos of the trophies (damn, addicting lar, these trophies), so, my mgs4 stuck at shadow mosses and still not open my rented bourne conspiracy...

if you are purely gaming, then 40gb should be enough. I thought so too myself, but because of PS3s multimedia capabilities, can you fight the urge? brows.gif

Am on 160gb myself, the hd movies, mp3s, pictures, games..too many, and still 30gbs free. Ah, welcome to PS3's community, where were game extremely hard as no pirated crap here.

You're in luck mate, i had the same problem before and this method works flawlessly: rclxms.gif

For Windows 2000 and XP:
Right click on My Computer.
Choose Manage (This will open the Computer Management window).
Go to the Storage category and select Disk Management
Right click the new drive (usually listed as Hard Disk 1) and "initialize"
You now have the option to partition and format the drive.
The default settings of Primary Partition and NTFS- Quick Format are recommended for most users.
But can use Fat32 to use it with PS3

Please tell me the result...cheers icon_rolleyes.gif

I bought a casing but my olf 40 gb is not even in the Disk Management.

I tried the hdd with ps3..no problem. I tried the casing with other hdd, no problem..

I tried other casing with my hdd, it cannot read..doesnt even appear in the usb device list...but its working flawlessly in ps3.. sleep.gif

entahlah..until now the 40gb doing nothing..

If u bought GT5P from PSN, then u can play it direct from the hdd, but MGS4 still need the disc to play it. nod.gif
BTW, PS3 will "reserve" 12% of your hdd space without any specific reasons... shakehead.gif

if your HDD undetectable you need to reformat with disk management. create partition.
normal format is NTFS, you need to reformat it into FAT32, ( apparently no larger then 32gb)
once its reformatted to FAT32 , ps3 will read your external HDD

thats what i did for mine for back up saves files in ps3.

Actually your windows XP will not detect the ps3 HDD because it in a Sony proprietary format. Windows XP only reads NTFS and FAT32. To format it you will need to use some Hard Disk management software like Norton Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director.

That is correct and that is why you need a3rd party software like partition magic to see other disk management utilities. I had the same problem untill i used partition magic and then reformatted it.

upgrading is nessescary for those who always download contents and plan to not delete it for a long period of time.

Viewnet's main branch is in 3rd floor. Just go through the lane in between C-Zone and Cycom(PC Zone is next to Cycom), go all the way straight to the back and turn left. You'll see Viewnet then.

My 40GB only lasted a few months. If you intend to download a lot of demos and install lots of games, 40GB will be gone before you know it. I use 512 line....1gb takes about 3-4 hours also.

Hi everyone, i m planning to get an external HDD enclosure for my 60GB 2.5" SATA hard disk for use with PS3. Besides formating the external hard drive into FAT32 format, i heard that some external enclosure/casing for the HDD is not compatible with the PS3 (especially those that includes Y cable type). Any suggestions on which brand of casing is compatible with the PS3? Izit because the USB port of PS3 doesn't supply enough power to certain brand of external enclosure? Thanks alot.

Think I may need to upgrade my HDD laa lepas raya...

With several PSN games pasing the 1 GB mark and Burnout 3.5 GB plus several games got installation and add-on...I'm now left with 4-5 GB....

And this doesn't include any the videos as I usually don't save any videos...and only several MP3 albuls to play with Wipeout....

guys, just wondering, any of u experience some occasional squeaks after upgrading ur hard drive?

no, its NOT the clicking/grinding u hear when ur hard drive is dying, just like a soft mouse/monkey squeak (like..."eek!" for almost a second), but in a quiet room it IS noticable, even when some sound is actively coming from the speaker, other things etc. in case ur wondering, squeaks are randomly spaced apart(5 seconds to 1-3 minutes ...erghh) and soooooo irritating (since it was never there before the upgrade - 40g ps3)

thought the drive is failing (weird since its a new one, seagate, 5400rpm, sata, 160GB), but finally isolated the problem when i turned off the background downloads, no more squeaks....meaning that the occasional squeak comes when it's WRITING data to the HDD. weird ey? no probs when reading from the drive...

googled the net, found a similar guy with a (high pitched) small squeaky sound on the net, but dont know if its a similar problem....and no solution too. will probably try to switch back the old hard drive later to see if the sound disappears

opinions much appreciated wink.gif

UPDATE: did the HDD swap, no squeak from the old drive. which leaves a few questions....new HDD problematic, or is it just some typical seagate 2.5" hdd "characteristic"? aiyaaa...so much time spent redownloading....(the backup option didnt werk for me)

1st : Connect the controller using the usb cable and then press the PS button

(after pressing the PS button)

2nd : the system software cannot run correctly.press the ps button to restart the system

if the system cannot be restarted , the system partition of the hard disk must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software
Insert storage media that contains update of a version 2.42 or later (in my case 2.52 or later)[I] , then press the start and select button
at the same time.

For information on how to obtain update data , refer to the website of your region.

which PUP do you put in the usb drive? 2.52 or 2.53?

2.53 = 5b0e9d62ff6e9edc796db9a2916824f0
2.52 = e9cd7c268667ee695a708bf00c6853d8

Here's a link on how to verify the md5

Follow the instructions and compare the result with the one vorchiel has given.

Is it this screen that u were having?

user posted image

Usual instructions:
1. Download the latest Firmware form the playstation website
2. Create the following folder structure on a (FAT32 formatted) USB stick:
- PS3\UPDATE
3. Copy the Firmware file (PS3UPDAT.PUP) into the UPDATE folder
4. Insert the USB stick into the PS3 and follow the on screen instructions (Press the START and SELECT at the same time)

since ps3 cant detect update file... redownload firmware again...and also try another usb stick

4. Insert the USB stick into the PS3 and follow the on screen instructions (Press the START and SELECT at the same time)

since ps3 cant detect update file... redownload firmware again...and also try another usb stick

strange...
*
yesszaa..thats the one..thats the prob...

& nope..still the same prob..its wont work which is strange rite ? did it many times already wif that solution :-(

try plugging the ps3 controller to the usb cable... i read somewhere abt it

From some forum in US...
I recently updated my 40GB PS3 to an 80GB hard drive. I had a similar problem in that the screen would stay connect a usb cable to the controller and press the PS button. I did that and the controller would just flash so I resetted the controller. A message popped up saying that "the system can't be restarted so the hard drive must be reformatted", so I downloaded the latest update to my flash drive and made a folder and put the update in it. I restarted the PS3by pressing start and select and plugged the flash drive in and it reformatted the hard drive and updated the firmware update.

Changing hd on your ps3 does not void the warranty.

The thing about upgrading ps3 hdd is that you want to do it early on while theres not much content on it otherwise you will need a larger backup hdd if you want to keep all your downloaded stuff. smile.gif

There is no Malaysian PS3 with 160GB. Either the shop is lying or they replaced the stock hdd with a new hdd.Or its a PS3 from a different warranty.

The only 160GB SKU available now is in the US, and thats the Uncharted Bundle.

Malaysia only has 80GB.

I'm assuming they have ugpraded the HDD to 160GB beforehand though. There are a few shops in Sunway doing that as well. Either way it isn't such a good deal. You can get an 80GB now for RM1550, a 320GB HDD costs only another RM210. You do the math....

hey.. to upgrade the hdd.. all i need to do is this rite ?

1. backup by running backup function to somewhere else
2. shut down ps3, unplug cable, take screw driver and unscrew it*
3. follow the instructions on the web..
4. restart the machine and the machine will auto format the new hdd no matter what is the size.
5. restore data back to PS3 and everything shud run fine ?

you use a 3rd hdd is it? one which is formatted using fat32? is it possible for me to use a hdd that is already formatted using ntsf and partition it to say 20gb of fat32 and plug that in into the ps3?

i'm guessing actually, for online purchased contents, it has to belong to something and in this case i guess it'd be your PSN account.

now i'm a little confused.
can someone answer this?

if i've purchase a game via online store, will i be able to play it if i log into the same account on a different PS3?

or do the purchased games register to your PS3 and you can only play on that particular one PS3? (nakata101 i think the backup for upgrade stores and restores EVERYTHING from your original HDD to your new HDD)

We can upgrade it without losing anything example like Psn game which we bought from PSN store...  right??
*
yes, provided that you backed up to an external drive using the ps3 backup utility. the backed up data contains all music/video/installeddata/accounts/saves/dlcs and can only be restored on the same ps3.

Hi all,

read a respond somewhere in this thread that PS3 can play MKV files. Is this true? PS3 site does not confirm this.

Can anyone confirm this?

PS3 can't play MKV files natively, but you can stream/transcode from your PC to your PS3 very easily using software. Most people talk about Tversity but that piece of sh*t was a nightmare to configure and was buggy as all hell. I've since started using PS3 Media Server (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/). Literally install, and everything just about works. Unlike Tversity, this program didn't need any additional codecs to decode MKV files.

Mostly its wisest to go for the best gigabyte-per-dollar ratio when buying a HDD.
Which means, currently, Western Digital's 320GB(WD3200VE-SATA) is the best choice at the moment, its going for about RM200 right now.

I think the last time I did it, you need as much hard disk space as your PS3 is using. Lets say your 60GB is used until 40GB, then you need 40GB. IINM. smile.gif

But they are the usual manufacturers from Segate, WD, Samsung, Hitachi, etc.

Price? Expect it to be close to 1k.

Yup you can actually...if you use the back up utility...It backs up all of the items in your HDD...even the copy protected save file...

p/s: Just upgraded mine last two weeks (320 GB only)...all is fine except for one day after upgrading when it gave me a msg saying that my hdd data is corrupted and asked me to restart. After restarting, it ran a check..and after that it's all okay...and no more problem.

So anyone verified yet about the heating issues of 7200rpm hdd?

otherwise i might just stick with getting the 5000rpm one instead.

last week am upgraded 60GB to 500GB ... throw old 60GB to dustbin ... so far no problem with new 500GB smile.gif

make sure you choose quick format NOT full format ... 500GB full format takes you around 28 hours rclxub.gif

next time you want to backup 500GB data ... am believe it will take more than 1 day to backup cry.gif

last time when i backup my 22gb data from the original 80gb it took 28 minutes. Transfer back into the 500gb also took same time.

if the 500gb is full it might took around 6 hours!

What issue? Never was an issue to begin with.

The heat produced from a 7200RPM HDD is hardly enough to cause the PS3 troubles. I've been running on a 250GB 7200RPM HDD on my PS3 for half a year now, never cause me a problem and it should not.

The heat increase in from a 5400RPM HDD to 7200RPM is barely noticeable, at the very most 1-3c difference.

I assume when you guys say upgrade, you mean you buy the HDD from Lowyat and manually upgrade this yourself.

Does this void warranty?
Which type of HDD does it use? Laptop's or desktop's?
What's the biggest capacity supported? 1TB?

1) it doesnt void any warranty
2) notebook-sized hdd (2.5" sata)
3) no known limit yet. upgraded mine to 500gb last week

Amazing, thanks for sharing the knowledge. I supposed this is DIY and not supported / endorsed by Sony Style, even when it doesnt void any warranty?

unfortunately you are wrong sad.gif

the hdd upgrade instruction is clearly described in the ps3 manual, and easy hdd upgrading ps3 is marketed by sony officials as a bullet point against other consoles.

if they really want to restrict ppl from going diy, they would have released 'official' ps3 hdd pack, with custom proprietary restriction to keep ppl from using any 3rd party unendorsed hdd.

I see, thanks a lot for the advise. I am tempted to get one but only for Final Fantasy games, others like MGS4 and more popular titles. PS3 games are still too expensive for me. Out of my league.

Thanks again! smile.gif

Yeap exactly.
No point in getting a SATA extension either as well since a 1TB 3.5" is miles cheaper.

This isn't for the PS3.

Although 2 platters of 500GB in a 2.5" is going to be even more expensive than this.

@SWATwolf,

Nope.Basically its cuz your files and all that are saved into your hdd itself. So,naturally if u remove that hdd and put in a new one, there wont be anything in it. You can connect your ps3 to a portable device or a computer and transfer the files from there. As to exactly how,im sorry but i cant answer that. Mr.Google will definitely get you sorted rclxms.gif

backup your games saves file separately......just incase something went wrong......sometimes the game saves unable to backup....it will cause error once you going to load the backup into new hdd.....thats what im experience before.....

Not OS....
Users created are stored in the PS3's flash memory.

Previously (the 20, 60, 80 with ps2 emu, 40GB versions) the flash memory contains your firmware details as well. Now however, the firmware is on your HDD. So make sure to update your firmware as well if you are using the newer version of PS3s.

have a question here..if i want to saved my game data that is the saved game file or game data on an external device such as memory card or pendrive or anything. is it possible?...if possible, what kind of device should i use and how should i saved this data?..and when i want to play the game, start from where i last saved. can i just plug in the external device and select the saved data from it..what im trying to say is making ps3 like ps2.use the 8mg card to saved then plug it again to play from it..please need conformation on this one..

Save data must be on the PS3 if you want to use it.

Though its not like save files are a few hundred megabytes, so whats wrong with just keeping it at the PS3's HDD?
Now if you want to bring your save data over to your friend's place or something, you just need to copy it onto your USB thumbdrive. Go to his PS3 then copy it over. Simple as that.

However, quite a number of games are locked so you cannot copy them to your thumbdrive and use it on another person's PS3.

sad.gif i have successfully updated my hdd to 320gb
but i need to go deactivate every account and reactivate it.
that's no big deal really... but the real prob is once i reactivate it, all the save data and trophy all gone. sad.gif

p/s: yes i do back up all the possible transfered save file and sync my trophy before i change my hdd. sad.gif

any idea?

you dont have to deactivate & reactivate at all since it is the same ps3.
in past firmware, playing a trophy-enabled game will re-populate the trophy list, and you can re-sync with trophy server after that. save files (restored from the backup) all work fine.

i dont know, but deactivation step for all accounts arent necessary. if i were you, i'll just login to each of the sharing accounts and redownload a shared content from psn store for each account to reactivate them back.
