QUOTE(wreckens15 @ May 19 2008, 01:32 PM) is violin an expensive instrument? for a beginner? Kapok guitars are totally sick if you really play and feel it.imean if guitar u can start with cheap kapok if violin? is there such thing as "cheap"? The cheapest violin I ever saw is RM200, a China made and the build quality are worst (you will see a few wood are not stick properly and a lot more). More over, violin is a sensitive instrument thus on a cheap violin will make your world go upside down. I have a few good cheap beginner violins for sale at RM399 new with case, rosin and bow. |

hi ppl!
i've been sometime since the last time i checked this thread! woowee ... it's still alive and kicking and i like it i've temporarily stopped the lesson due to hectic work schedules... i guess that's the pain of working full time ... erm with a dog still trying to bring myself to inform the music center that i'm quitting... just told them i'm halting the lessons for few months... how? will try to go there and inform personally soon .. and take the deposit back. so now i'm practicing at least a few times a week until i broke the g string yesterday?! aaaAAaa i never changed string before ... 1. should i attempt to change it myself or? i read and watched some instructions online but still... 2. should i just change the string that broke or change all the string (one after the other of course...) cos i don wanna change the string and broke it again and, yes, how much does a tuner with and without metronome costs? and which type/brand will u ppl recommend... i seriously must learn how to tune the violin... previously the teacher always tune for me and he doesnt say much on how to tune e.g. like the correct way to twist the peg, when to use the fine tuner etc... hear from u ppl soon QUOTE(Cello @ Apr 21 2008, 02:15 PM) ![]() yours? QUOTE(dancing_violin @ Apr 28 2008, 09:52 PM) spending such amount dosn't scare me off, but this is my reasoning; what can i achieve in such a short duration( 4 classes in 1 month ) i was still playing open strings in 1 month... or is it me - slow?? hmmm ... QUOTE(jikolo @ May 19 2008, 10:07 PM) i'm using eurostring. so far ok ... well at least for me... my ears are not that greatly tuned to violin yet... but imo, beginner's violin no need to be too expensive as you can upgrade later... |

QUOTE(jikolo @ May 19 2008, 10:07 PM) Ahhh...good question. Yes, they are acceptable for beginners. All the China made except Eurostring.QUOTE(storm04 @ May 24 2008, 06:00 AM) #1 still trying to bring myself to inform the music center that i'm quitting... just told them i'm halting the lessons for few months... how? #1, You can halt your lessons anytime but not more than 2 months (that is what music school follows). If it is over 2 months, you can resume it by paying the registration fees again.#2 1. should i attempt to change it myself or? i read and watched some instructions online but still... #3 2. should i just change the string that broke or change all the string (one after the other of course...) #4 how much does a tuner with and without metronome costs? and which type/brand will u ppl recommend #5 woowee ... the bow looks nice... carbon fibre bow? (or am i talking nonsense?) yours? #6 i was still playing open strings in 1 month... or is it me - slow?? hmmm ... #2, It is not advisable to change it yourself as violin is a sensitive instrument. Come to my shop and I will change it and teach you how to change it. #3, You should change the G/4th string as your violin is new. #4, There is less digital tuners for violin in the market. But I sell pitch pipe at my shop, also I will teach you how to tune. #5, Yes, it is a carbon fiber bow. Fact: Carbon fiber bows are the worst. #6, To be frank, yes. Normally my students will move on to finger playing after the first class. By the way, franstormer is my student now. He is already started playing a song on the violin after a first class with me. |

I'm currently on eurostring. and the bridge is really collapsing xD well, the string is 'eating' the bridge. making a hole =.= I've been practicing my vibrato, still dunno wrist or hand vibrato suits me. oh well =D my friend told me to audition for the philharmonic orchestra at my place, but i doubt my skills T.T

QUOTE(icypetals @ May 25 2008, 09:56 PM) if you used to electronic tuner/PC, you'll won't be able to tune during performance.first, pianist and violinist enter the hall, then 3rd people who's stage crew carrying a laptop, then the violinist tune and looking at the laptop, then the crew go back with the laptop... or, every violinist bring out a small device which is electronic tuner, so everyone start to tune, but the tuner is capturing everyone's sound so the tuner indicator jumping up and down, then everyone start to scream "stfu i'm tuning"... ... |

Basically to get a good instrument, you should go for those Italian hand made. Musicians do not care much about brand, the important fact is how the instrument was it made and wood age and quality. I can introduce you some Italian hand made if you want. For the bridge part, it is actually normal that the strings "eat" it. You can always replace a new nice bridge. Most string players does that. Go for the audition, at least you try. QUOTE(icypetals @ May 25 2008, 09:56 PM) Sorry, I only use tuning fork. I do not rely on digital pitch. |

im thinking of put some mark at my violin birdge. should i do that? the wiki say that is normal for beginner to mark the bridge mith something so they can remember the position easier. i dunno what is my problem, but i always end up going to the second position for my middle and ring finger. only my index finger can grab the position. perhaps is bcoz im used to the fret at my guitar?
