QUOTE(pigcat @ Feb 12 2008, 01:04 PM) Thanks for adding me to the list! Nope I'm not audio engineer, I'm a full time (also free lance) music arranger now. I have a friend who's MPO player, a Romanian, and his skill is like... then I look at my playing... i dont need to look at MPO, my friend in MPYO oready makes my lausy playing skills look even more like crap xD But he's a violinist =D but listening to perlman play viola makes me feel bad too T.T I need serious training... even i doubt my way of holding my bow and vibrato T.T

still finding the right way to vibrato, its been quite a problem for me these says, it seems unnatural and it shakes my viola when i'm doing it, disrupting the flow of the bow.

yeah, basically i'm trying to learn from basics again, trying to find the source of problem. Hmm, learning wrist and hand vibrato at the same time, I quite dont get it, how come there are 2 types? Do we use both? or one only?

yup very very important, i'm more comfortable with wrist vibrato , i've been using tat since i somehow "learn" vibrato, I'm practising both though, wrist and hand, and looking into the mirror as i play, ensure 90 degree on my hand, and stuff like tat >< what are the basics? i mean what does it include?

haha i'm overseas now studying, so cant ask my teacher >< need to wait. Its ok, thanks cello, I'll look up for some more info on basics and see which part i'm doing it wrong or somewhat xD I find hand vibrato quite comfortable but wrist is ok too. So yeah, but first, back to basics =)

QUOTE(little ice @ Apr 15 2008, 01:46 PM) mind post a video of you playing? i'm curious how LTCL level plays. did you choose zigeunerweisen as one of your pieces? yeah i wanna see too. zigeunerweisen is crazy, i only played the accompaniment in viola, and my 16 year old friend is playing the solo =.= gosh, he's damn good.

any brands of viola for intermediate? I wanna save up some money to get one. I'm currently on eurostring. and the bridge is really collapsing xD well, the string is 'eating' the bridge. making a hole =.= I've been practicing my vibrato, still dunno wrist or hand vibrato suits me. oh well =D my friend told me to audition for the philharmonic orchestra at my place, but i doubt my skills T.T

QUOTE(Cello @ May 26 2008, 12:20 AM) Violins, violas and cellos.. these instruments are not like market "hot selling" instrument. Basically to get a good instrument, you should go for those Italian hand made. Musicians do not care much about brand, the important fact is how the instrument was it made and wood age and quality. I can introduce you some Italian hand made if you want.
For the bridge part, it is actually normal that the strings "eat" it. You can always replace a new nice bridge. Most string players does that.
Go for the audition, at least you try. Sorry, I only use tuning fork. I do not rely on digital pitch. Thanks, I'll prolly just replace the bridge for now, but its quite expensive to ask other to carve the bridge >< anyway i'll try to uh go for the audition then T.T try... I'm not a pro though, and no grade basically xD just started 1.5 years ago =D found that I like viola, its very unique n i love the sound. =) QUOTE(little ice @ May 26 2008, 01:53 PM) by the way the initial question was asking for a step up from Euro String violas. for violas, i've heard a china viola cost around RM4k'ish sounds very good - probably because of the player though. i'd say play as much instruments as you can before giving out the money to the cashier - be it from shops or from other players. then you'll know which price range you'll appreciate. Ah~ well, dunno much of china violin, but I heard that the sound quality aint tat good? don know much of italy violins but i know they are super expensive XD German ones aint bad though. hmm... I'm looking for a rm1k ++ step up, I prefer mild sound rather than a sharp and loud type. =/ hmm~ no idea =D

I've got a whole section on staccato in passacaglia that I can barely play well. To do staccato which part of the bow should i use? End of bow or starting of bow? or mid of bow? ><
