i have problem interpreting the 4 notes that are arranged vertically.... play which note first or how is their rhythm... someone pls help!

the common way of playing 3~4 notes chord is to strike on the bottom 2 notes then aim for the higher 2 notes, as quick as you can (or comfortable).

however, notice that only the highest note is 3 count, so you only need to hold the top note after playing the chord.

as for how to do it nicely, it need to be demostrated. best is to search the title of the song you're playing on youtube, you'll get a lot of references and start from there.

so is it necessary to follow the rhythm represented by the notes itself, like the bottom 3 notes (crochets) and the last note 3 (beats)

playing notes...read the score and play...
playing music.... read the score, understand the song and play with suitable touch.... many definitions.  hmm.gif

don't have to care much about those definitions first... just play the violin well is more than enough for lower grade students. all the philosophies should come when you got into Grade 7,8  or diploma.

I couldn't help but I have to disagree with that...

Even if you were grade 5 and that doesn't mean you should play a song with a few or even NO expressions etc etc as long as you finished it smoothly.

Let's say your teacher gave you a cantando piece but you just... played it like you were in a battlefield, very very serious. Too serious.

If you don't express dynamics, feelings and so on you wouldn't care what the piece is about. Then you wouldn't care the phrasings, colors of the music...

playing violin well includes expressing dynamics and lil bit of expressions of course. What I meant by philosophy goes beyond of what one understands about the piece normally. E.g: knowing the background of the music, for what reasons the composer jot down the piece, how one should express the music like the composer intended to... These are what I meant by philosophies behind the score, again....many names behind it.

Ohh...
I shall say only musicians with passion towards music will search for these philosophies. It doesn't matter any grade right? And of course age matters. Young children wouldn't give a damn for these laugh.gif .
